What’s new at Logistix Solutions

Our users told us they liked the features we covered in our last New Features and Users in the News … so much so that they asked us to expand on the features that save time and money and to talk about the solutions and the algorithms that provide answers no other design software can match.

That’s what gives each of our users an edge against their competitors whether they are consultants, service providers or commercial enterprises. They all compete for a slice of the business and the better their solution, the more business they win.

This month’s issue highlights some of the internal capabilities that make Logix the supply chain tool to use when the bottom line matters and finding the best solution, even if it’s finding a needle in a haystack, really matters. Sure it’s “technical” but it’s these behind the scenes algorithms that give our users the winning edge.

USERS IN THE NEWS LOGISTIX SOLUTIONS SOLVES PROBLEMS THAT RANGE FROM SIMPLE “NEED AN ANSWER BY TOMORROW” TO MUCH MORE COMPLEX WITH MILLIONS OF DOLLARS RIDING ON THE ANSWER. ITS NOT UNCOMMON FOR LOGIX TO SHOW SOLUTIONS THAT OTHER SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS CAN NOT PROVIDE. THAT CAN MEAN LOOKING AT THE INBOUND (SUPPLIER) AND THE OUTBOUND (DELIVERY) FREIGHT MOVEMENTS AND COSTS SIMULTANEOUSLY OR CALCULATING HOW MANY DISTRIBUTION SITES YOU NEED AND WHERE TO ACHIEVE A CERTAIN SERVICE LEVEL AT THE LOWEST COST. WE OFTEN HEAR THAT LOGIX HAS UNEARTHED IMMEDIATE SAVINGS (IN THE MILLIONS) THAT OTHER SOLUTIONS IGNORED. ITS NOT FROM LONGER RUN TIMES. ITS FROM USING A COMBINATION OF ALGORITMS THAT THE USER CAN CONTROL THAT ARE BETTER ABLE TO FIND ANSWERS TO UNRULY PROBLEMS.

Using Logix When the Bottom Line Really Counts in Beating the Competition

Logix was designed to find answers to Supply Chain problems that are complex, multi-faceted and even unruly. But, what does that mean when Supply Chain applications all sell themselves as “optimizing” tools? How can you get a better answer than optimum? First of all, complex problems don’t all lend themselves to strict optimization. Even the most frequently used mathematical tool, known as Integer Linear Programming or ILP, solves generally linear problems … like, minimum distance or costs that are largely based on distance. Throw into the mix variable warehousing rates, discounted LTL and truckload rates for different traffic lanes or Greenfield solutions and solutions that rely on ILP can fail to find the “optimum” solution. Close enough, whether that’s 97% or 99% is not good enough.

Logix starts with ILP and also incorporates other Non-Linear Programming algorithms (NLP) to find that elusive best solution. What that means to you is that the final solution is as close to optimum as technically feasible in as little time as possible. Whether you are competing for business or saving your business money, what you want to know is that there’s not a better answer your competitors are going to find or that’s going to lose you a shot at winning new business or new clients.

So, what are some of these technical features and how do they work? That may be a bit too technical or require a bit too much explanation, but here are a few ways to tweak Logix in order to provide the best solutions that you’re looking for:

Optimization Confidence Level lets you choose the degree of optimization and the time it takes to solve a problem from quick to optimum.

Transportation Costing Algorithms let you choose LTL (prorated), Full Truckload (non-prorated) or Consolidated Truckload computation,

Freight rates, distance tables, warehousing and labor rates and tariffs enhance supply chain models for greater accuracy and flexibility.

Optimization Options like “Optimize both Inbound and Outbound Simultaneously”, “Supplier Direct” or “Cross Dock” find the best overall solution.

Proximity Analysis shows you just how far off you are from the best solution or location.

Powerful Optimization Algorithms and Unique

“Radar View” Shows Alternative Results

Logix 7.0 - Finding the Best Solutions For Our Users

Optimization Confidence Level – Choose how fast an “optimization” runs for Confidence Levels from 80% to

100% and the range of possible cost results for each solution. The Default is 99.9% which is often “optimum” or a solution down to 80% for a Quick and Dirty analysis.

Transportation Cost. Choose LTL (Prorated) to prorate transport cost as a percentage of the “Ship Unit”. So, if you are shipping 5,000 lbs with a ship unit of 40,000 lb, the prorated amount will be 1/8. Use FTL (Nonprorated) to round up quantities to the Ship Unit level. So, a quantity of 70,000 lbs with a ship unit of 40,000 lbs is 2 shipments. Use Consolidated Cost when using LTL/TL Freight Rates and weight breaks with customer demand in pounds and number of shipments or orders.

Freight Rate and Distance Tables. Logix incorporates extensive LTL/TL, point-to-point, region-to-region, zone and mileage band freight rate and distance table structures in order to greatly enhance the accuracy of its solutions. Combined with Logix’ Probability based simulation capabilities, users can peer into the future to determine what might happen under different growth and inflation scenarios.

Optimization Options. Network Optimization options allow you to manipulate the results you are looking for. Select “Optimize Inbound and Outbound Simultaneously” or “Inbound and Outbound Proximity Analysis” and see how the results can change, even dramatically, as you balance inbound and outbound costs during the optimization process or focus on the outbound (delivery) cost first and determine the inbound costs afterward.

Proximity Analysis. Whether you run this analysis with your existing or candidate distribution sites or in Greenfield mode, Logix shows you how much it’s costing you NOT to be located at the optimum location or in which direction transportation costs increase or decrease and by how much . Set a Proximity Limit of 50 or 100 miles if the Proximity Solution shows an optimum that is very far removed from its base location.

Can you tell which solution saves over $1 million?
