On behalf of the College, I wish to thank the host families and staff members, who agreed to host the students and staff for the duration of their stay. It certainly is a big commitment to agree to ‘host’ and we have been given feedback that everyone absolutely enjoyed the experience. Thank you especially to Mr Turnbull, Ms Beattie and Ms Theoharis who contributed heavily to the organisation of the exchange through the week. Thank you also to Mr Hilmi for hosting Mr Nakae and Ms Beattie and Ms Theoharis for hosting Ms Inami. I was also very proud of our students in the way in which they welcomed our International visitors throughout their stay. It was a great pleasure to have Councillor Roz Blades, Mayor of the City of Greater Dandenong, attend our special assembly on Monday 29th July, to welcome our guests. Thanks are also extended to Ann De Kretser, Director of the Monash Japanese Language Education Centre (also an ex-student), and Peter Behm, President of Noble Park Rotary Club, who also participated in our ‘Welcome Assembly’ with very inspiring and thought provoking speeches. Congratulations are also extended to our student leaders who were very proud Masters of Ceremonies, conducting the proceedings of the assembly with confidence and enthusiasm. Customs and Cultural Concert – Thursday 1st August The celebrations continued throughout the week with two very successful performances of the Customs and Culture Concert. The matinee performance included visitors from our local feeder Primary Schools, with approximately 260 Grade 4 and Grade 5 students very appreciative of our student’s talent, celebrating the diversity of culture and customs that our College so richly embraces every day.The evening performance was a wonderful success as well, with some surprise sta performances intermingled with the student talent, under the bright lights on the stage! It was a full house with organisers having to reach for more seating to cater for the extended audience. It was a great team eort, but a special mention and thank you are extended to Ms Jennelle Little and Ms Lynda Chapman, who co-ordinated the event. Again our student leaders, Laiba, Kevin and Rezwan, were amazing at compering the concert, engaging the audience and keeping the program on track. It was a fabulous eort and we should all be so proud of this rich experience!!

2019 Parent Opinion SurveyOur College is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey oered by the Department of Education and Training. It is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of a parent’s perceptions of school climate, student behaviour and student engagement. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies. The survey will be conducted online, and only takes 10-15 minutes to complete. It can be accessed at any convenient time on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smart phones. The online survey will also be available in a range of languages other than English. The survey results will be reported back to the school at the end of September, and these are posted on our noticeboard at our entrance, discussed at School Council and will be available on our website. Randomly selected Parents/Guardians will receive letters from Tuesday 6th August onwards, with more detailed information. Please do not hesitate to contact me (Pam Dyson – Principal) on 9546 9066 if you require any further information.

Planning for 2020It is at this time of the year that our College starts planning for 2020 subject choices. Within this newsletter there is more detailed information relating to this planning. I wish to emphasise the importance of both Parents/Guardians and Year 10 (2019) → Year 11 (2020) students attending the Senior Information evening on Tuesday 13th August. We look forward to your attendance at this important event.

A reminder that all students should be on site at school by 8.40am, ready to go to their lockers and collect books so that they are at their period one class at 8.50am. Any students who have a valid reason for being late are asked to have a written note or communication from Parents/Guardians to the General Oice or Year Level Coordinator.

Reminder re Uniform Expectations A reminder that all students are expected to be in full winter uniform during Term 3. This includes the compulsory wearing of a tie.If, for any reason, a student is temporarily unable to wear an item of the school uniform, Parents/Guardians are asked to communicate in writing or though telephone to their Year Level Coordinator. Your continued support regarding the wearing of correct uniform is greatly appreciated.

Mobile Phone Policy update

On Wednesday 26 June 2019 the Minister for Education, the Hon James Merlino MP, announced a new schools Mobile Phone Policy which will come into eect from Term 1, 2020. The new policy will require all students at Victorian state primary and secondary schools to switch o their mobile phones and store them securely from the start of the school day until the final bell.

Schools will be supported by the Department of Education and Training to engage their communities in conversations about the new policy, and how to best implement it within their school.

Detailed materials and resources regarding the new policy will be issued by the Department in time for the beginning of Term 4, 2019, to give schools a full term to work with their communities ahead of the policy coming into eect.

ACHIEVING GENDER EQUALITY: EMPOWERING WOMEN AND GIRLS Hampton Park Secondary College – Wednesday 31 July 2019

A Model United Nations is a simulation of the UN General Assembly. The Model UN Assembly runs according to the UN protocols and procedures followed by the UN General Assembly. As an assembly delegate, you have the opportunity to step into the shoes of a country ambassador to the UN to discuss global issues on the UN’s current agenda and find ways of addressing these issues.Having participated in the Model UN at Hampton Park, as a student, I have enhanced my ability to work with others. I have also gained more knowledge and awareness of global issues. It was such an honour to be part of the program and I am grateful for it.

Song

The Model UN conference is a great opportunity to meet like-minded people who have a similar vision and goal as a global community. I have been attending Model UN Conferences for a number of years and each year is a new learning experience. I would definitely recommend attending to anyone who wants to work on their public speaking skills or enjoys debating. We are given the chance to represent a country and debate over a common issue and this year’s issue was Gender Equality. My favourite part is the caucus where everyone is given the opportunity to negotiate, and to express their countries views and opinions. Overall, it was a fun & informative event

When students are late to school, they should go straight to the General Oice Reception to sign in through the attendance ki-osk. This generates a docket for them to use as a pass to get into class. If they do not have an acceptable parent note explaining this late arrival, they will be given detention the following day a¯er school. All students have been informed of this process.

If students do not sign in through the attendance kiosk, an automated message is generated and parents will receive an SMS message informing them that the student is absent. Please ensure your child is aware of the sign in procedure

Shinminato Exchange Visit

Kevin KokYear 12

This was my second time hosting a Japanese student and I can safely say that it always turns out to be a very memorable experience. It is a really rewarding cultural exchange as I got to experience Japanese culture, learn some of their language and pick up on some slang. The memories made will definitely stay with me. They are all incredible people and I would definitely do this again if given the chance. It is unfortunate that I am unable to go to Japan as I will be gone next year. So I would highly encourage everybody to take this chance and visit Japan as it will be without a doubt the most memorable experience of your high school years.

Year 12 students and our school doctors took part in a program called The P.A.R.T.Y. program - The Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth. This program proved to be a dynamic and interactive injury awareness and prevention program. P.A.R.T.Y. used vivid clinical reality to show the consequences that can occur when engaging in risk-taking behaviour. This was a one-day program that ran within The Alfred. Students were provided with information that will enable them to recognise potential injury-producing situations, make prevention oriented choices, and adopt behaviours that minimise unnecessary risk. Students engaged with emergency services professionals, doctors, nurses, allied health practitioners, and people who have experienced trauma and survived - o¯en with significant disabilities. The working hospital environment provided our students with an authentic experience. This allowed insight into the many consequences that patients, families and health professionals are faced with as a result of risk-related trauma. We are grateful that Noble Park students were given this amazing opportunity.

Sports report

Mr SweatmanInter School Sports Coordinator

On Monday 29th July, the College was represented at the Intermediate Sport District championships with a Boys and Girls Futsal team and a Boys and Girls Basketball team.

All teams had a great day with all teams making the top 4 in their competition. The Girls Futsal was mainly Year 9 so playing some Year 10 teams was a challenge, but one they took well and had some convincing wins. They were 4th on the day.The Girls Basketball had to play 6 games which made a long day, but they persisted and broke even with wins and losses. They also had a draw to come 4th on the day.The boys Futsal team had two huge wins to start the day, but they were beaten in an extremely close semi-final, only to see another team they had beaten win the other semi to make the final. Unlucky boys but well done on 3rd place. The Boys Basketball dominated their pool games, and found the semi and final much tougher. A¯er a solid win in the semi-final they unfortunately met a better team in the final, losing 27-19. A great day with a 2nd place out of the 8 teams. Thanks to Mr Green, Mr Dickson, Ms Bajrektarevic and Ms Roshiah for their help on the day.
