Waterways was stated in 1983 consolidating the previous professional expe-rience dated from 1972, including both design and technical assistance to con-struction. Waterways has gained a wide experience in the field of civil works, in particu-lar for dams and power station, water supply and sanitation, irrigation and agricultural development plans, water resources, risk and emergency interven-tions, road and railways trasports and road safety projects, in Italy and abroad.

Waterways performed several technical assistance services for United Nations, to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to the Italian Presidence of Ministries’ Board, to EuropeAid. Waterways assisted major Italian and French Contractors during bid prepara-tion, for design analysis, search of alternatives, construction methods, price analyses, as well as assisting them during construction.

Environmental process modelling

Waterways gained very high competence and qualification in the field of WWTP and integrated urban wastewater systems modelling.

The division is managed by Dr. Lorenzo Benedetti, a leading expert in the field.

Studied dams and reservoirs are set to various purposes, hydroelectric, fresh water, irrigation, flood protection, navigation purposes.

The service performed varies from full design to assistance during bidding or construction, validation of design, environmental impact assessment. Safety assessment and procedures for management was performed for 25 dams in Italy, under appointment of the Servizio Dighe.

Emergency and international cooperation

Waterways was involved in technical assistance for international bodies in projects of emergency relief and reconstruction.

In Libia and in Afganistan was performed for the UN the technical assistance and the support to work supervision for two hospitals.

In Albania Waterways cooperated with UN for the assistance to local administration to re-construct public buildings, mange solid waste collection, roads, drainage, irrigation, after the 1997 crisis.

In Darfur Waterways performed the design and the work supervision in a program of sahelian roads, seed shelters, agriculture, water storages and water wells, sanitation, educational development and gender equality programs. The activity was performed for Montedil in the frame of a wide

program financed by Italian mMinistry of Foreign affairs and managed by UN.

In China (Hetian, Pimo Project) we cooperated for the validation of agricultural and irrigation supplies, financed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Khair Khana Hospital, Kabul

In Somaliland Waterways cooperated to the supervision of works, performed by Montedil, during the execution of rehabilitation works for the cane plantation and sugar cane plant in Johar (Duca degli Abbruzzi village on Wadi Shebeli).

In Tanzania it was provided design and execution supervision for a main dairy farm in Kitulo, Mbeya, including roads, buildings, wells, pastures, supplies.

Environmental impact assessment

Waterways performed several environmental impact assessments, baseline evaluations, recovery and impact mitigation of negative impacts produced by major civil works as roads or dams, improvement of positive impacts, limitation of negative effects on natural and human environment or on the ones produced by nature on works and human environment (risks and disasters).

Waterways’ technical manager was professor of environmental impact analysis for mayor civil works in Urbino University, EnvironmeSciences Faculty, and he is Secretary of the working group « environmental Impact » for the Italian section of ICOLD (International Committee of Large Dams).

Waterways owns competences and experience in Hydrological studies, modelling of land, rivers and cartificial water conveyance systems, Geology and hydrogeology.

Master Plans and alert systems have been developed in Algeria to prevent disasters. Plans includes the study of catchment basin and rivers, analysis of hystorical data, forecast of inundable lands and correlation with risk analyses, monitoring and alert system, procedures and training of personnel.

In Saudi Arabia Waterways cooperated to design and execution of two dams for flood routing.

Roads and Railways, Road Safety

Waterways studied and designed several roads and railways (civil works) also included as a part of dam design or as component of development projects, as in Darfur where the road component included 360 km of sahelian road between El Fasher and Geneina.

In Cyprus, for the European Commission, Waterways revised the road network and master plan, improving a system of risk and safety control, including design for remedia-tion of black spots, training of personnel of police department, training of technicians of appointed entities, establishing an audit sys-tem for the improvement of safety in design and costruction of roads.

Sanitary engineering and Irrigation

Waterways designed several hydraulic projects in the field of fresh water collection, treatment and distribution, sanitary engineering, sea outfalls, irrigation and land reclamation.

MiaMilia watsan treatment plant in Cyprus,

Aqueducts were designed in Genoa, in Marsica Region, on the coast north of Rome (Fiora aqueduct), for the capital of Nigeria (aqueducts of Abujia). In Cyprus, for UN it was designed and supervised the construction of a waste water treatment plant and sewer ducts. In Genoa Waterways designed and supervised the construction of sea outfalls from waste treatment plants in Val Polcevera, Pegli and Sestri.

Public and industrial Buildings

Waterways is appointed for the seismic verification and rehabilitation of public buildings owned by the Italian army (Marina Militare).

Kampala, Nile Hotel Cnference Centre, construction management

Waterways supervised the construction of two hospitals in Libya and in Afghanistan, designed and supervised the works of rehabilitation of the Nile Hotel and Conference Center in Kampala, managed the impact assessment and remediation works during the construction of 13 major railway stations in Italy.

More buildings were designed in the frame of hydraulic projects, as service buildings for dams and power stations, frequently built underground.
