LECTURE

The Consulate General of France in Toronto, in partnership with the Association « Ecritures Vagabondes », the Toronto French School, the University of Toronto, the Alliance Française,

the Tarragon Theatre, the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, the International Festival of Authors of Harbourfront, and the Salon du Livre de Toronto,

organize a residency of dramatic authors of french speaking communities from October 10th to October 30th

An Evening of Literature and Theatre with Écritures vagabondes authors, followed by an opportunity to meet Enzo Cormann

Écritures vagabondes is an association that brings together dramatic writers and directors face to face with the challenges posed by sensitive areas of the world and by minority or threatened cultures. Each year it organizes writing trips and writing workplaces in Sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa and the Middle East – and now in Toronto (October 10-30). These workplaces enable authors from different horizons to work together around a common theme and to participate in dramatic writing workshops for training young authors in the host countries. Mohamed Kacimi is the chair of Écritures vagabondes; the following members of this literary association will be at the Alliance Française: Ousmane Aledji (Benin), Elie Karam (Lebanon), Joséphine Serre (France), Marie Henry (Belgium) and Amr Sawah (Syria). These authors will read from their works. Enzo Cormann writes for the theatre and has a large number of plays to his credit, including Credo, Diktat and Toujours l'orage, published in France primarily by Éditions de Minuit, Théâtrales and Actes Sud. His works have been translated into some ten languages. A witty vocalist, he records on a regular basis and performs on stage with various jazz groups.

Enzo Cormann is associated with a number of theatres and, since 2000, has headed the department of dramatic writing at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Technique du Spectacle (ENSATT).

The ONF and the Consulate General of France in Toronto present « Ciné-jeunesse »

The National Film Board of Canada Mediatheque, in partnership with the Consulate General of France in Toronto, proudly introduces Ciné-jeunesse, an educational program offering private daytime screenings of contemporary French-language films. Specially selected for Francophone and French-language secondary school students, but appealing to diverse audiences, these critically-acclaimed films offer an important window on French culture. As all films are presented in French with English subtitles, the series also allows intermediate learners to improve language comprehension while being entertained.

‘These thoughtfully-selected films explore a range of issues and experiences relevant to young audiences,’ said Peggy Fothergill, NFB Mediatheque Manager. ‘The Ciné-jeunesse program nicely complements our established media literacy and film education programming, which has continually demonstrated the importance of the cinematic experience to students’ development.’

‘Ciné-jeunesse offers educators an innovative way to engage their students to deepen their knowledge of our French culture and language,’ said Madeleine Meilleur, Minister of Culture and Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs. ‘This project demonstrates the National Film Board of Canada’s dedication to distinctive, innovative programming in both official languages.’

The program includes a choice of eight compelling films, including Nicolas Philibert’s touching documentary Être et avoir (a César Award winner) and Christophe Barratier’s Oscar-nominated feature Les Choristes. « Le malade imaginaire » One of the world's greatest comedies by one of the world's greatest playwrights! Alceste is at odds with mankind for its lack of loyalty and the hypocrisies inherent in social conventions. Despite this, he is in love with Célimène, a flighty, shallow and heartless coquette, but fails to understand why she would refuse to follow him far from this mundane world, and live happily somewhere in isolation. «In a society where social order continues to require compromise, Molière’s work remains relevant. While, since its creation, much has changed, human behaviour almost certainly has not.» GUY MIGNAULT.
