Presently, F&H Construction is in the middle of managing the construction of a new 27,000 square foot, 30-bed deten- tion facility to house juvenile offenders for the County of Tuolumne. The project that is located in beautiful Sonora is constructed of concrete and steel on close to 2.48 acres. The facility will include one housing unit with 18 sleep- ing rooms, classrooms, dayroom, medical examination room, an enclosed/secure outdoor exercise area, central control room, juvenile processing, holding cells, vehicu- lar sallyport, administration/staff area, laundry room, kitchen and maintenance area including other ancillary spaces plus site work, irrigation, utilities, security elec- tronics, fencing, landscaping and parking. This project is supervised by our team members Project Manager Tim O’Brien and Project Engineer Brendan Corbett. They agree that their favorite part is, “The location! So- nora is a pleasant place to work. It is scenic and a nice community.” They also like “working through issues with plans and keeping the project moving forward.” Tim O’Brien, Project Manager, is currently working on, “Building the concrete masonry building, which requires a lot of coordination with the mechanical and electrical contractors. The site work is completed through underground utilities with paving and site appurtenances to be completed at a later date.” When questioning Brendan Corbett about daily operations he is involved with his response is “Besides construction of the building, documentation of all the people onsite, meetings, change orders, RFIs (Request for Information) and submittals happens on a daily basis.” F&H recognizes that subcontractors are key facets to successful projects. This project is supervised by our team members Project Manager Tim O’Brien and Project Engineer Brendan Corbett. They agree that their favorite part is, “The location! So-nora is a pleasant place to work. It is scenic and a nice community.” They also like “working through issues with plans and keeping the project moving forward.”

Tim O’Brien, Project Manager, is currently working on, “Building the concrete masonry building, which requires a lot of coordination with the mechanical and electrical contractors. The site work is completed through underground utilities with paving and site appurtenances to be completed at a later date.”

When questioning Brendan Corbett about daily operations he is involved with his response is “Besides construction of the building, documentation of all the people onsite, meetings, change orders, RFIs (Request for Information) and submittals happens on a daily basis.”

which make up the majority of the walls. What he likes the most about this project is the scenery from the scaffolding. When asked about what he has learned from this project he answers, “Even though I have practically seen it all, the teamwork goes a long way and F&H Construction’s leadership on this project is top notch.”

Ricky Batterton with Con J. Franke Electric mounts all sites and build-ing electrical conduits, A/V system, fire alarm and generator systems. Some of his daily operations are “Laying out and installing wall boxes, site lighting and all finish electrical work.”

“Since there are no exposed conduits permitted, all conduits will be hidden in the walls and ceilings, making the layout especially critical on this job,” answers Ricky Batterton when asked what he likes most about this project and when questioned what he has learned, he states that, “Since this is a specialty type detention facility we have gained a lot of experience running conduits in CMU and the extensive access control system, which will make future jobs easier.” Con J. Franke Electric is also pleased with “The F&H team who has per-formed great in keeping the project running smoothly.” Our construction team is looking forward to the completion of this project in late September, 2016.

WEEKLY ECONOMIC UPDATE

WEEKLY QUOTE“The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance, the wise man grows it under his feet.” - James Oppenheim WEEKLY TIP In your fifties, make sure to check up on your retirement goals. Does it appear you have viable financial paths to achieve them? Test out different financial scenarios (with professional input) to see if your retirement strategy may need adjusting.

WEEKLY RIDDLE I descend softly, fade away gently, change the color of the ground, but I never go up the way I come down. What am I?

Last week’s riddle:It is a word in the English language, written using only two letters of the alphabet. You can say this word merely by using one letter of the alphabet, and that letter is a vowel. What word is this?

Last week’s answer:Eye.

TWO HOUSING INDICATORS HIT MULTIYEAR HIGHS While monthly real estate indicators are often later revised, the latest numbers for new home buying and pending home sales are impressive, indeed. The Census Bureau reported a 16.6% jump in new home sales in April, putting them at an 8-year peak. Housing contract activity surged 5.1% last month, according to the National Association of Realtors, reaching a level unseen since February 2006. The Wall Street Journal had forecast just an 0.7% April gain for the NAR’s pending home sales index.1

Q1 GDP REVISED UP; DURABLE GOODS ORDERS UP 3.4% How much did the economy grow in the first quarter? In the second estimate of the Bureau of Economic Analysis, 0.8%. (The BEA originally estimated 0.5% growth.) Minus transportation orders, the Department of Commerce still found hard goods orders advancing 0.4% in April.2

HOUSEHOLD SENTIMENT INDEX RISES IN MAY The University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index lost 1.1 points from its preliminary May reading to post a final May mark of 94.7. Still, that was far better than its final April reading of 89.0.2,3

BULLS RUN FREELY Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen’s Friday remark that an interest rate hike could be appropriate in the coming months took very little momentum out of the market last week. From May 23-27, the Dow rose 2.13% to 17,873.22; the S&P 500, 2.28% to 2,099.06; and the Nasdaq, 3.44% to 4,933.50 (the Nasdaq had its best week in more than three months). Oil ended the trading week at $49.33; gold, at $1,216.70.3

THIS WEEK: Monday is Memorial Day, so U.S. financial markets will be closed. Tuesday offers the April personal spending report, the April core PCE price index, the March S&P/Case-Shiller home price index, and earnings from TiVo. On Wednesday, the latest manufacturing PMIs from China and the European Union appear, plus the May manufacturing PMI from the Institute for Supply Management and a new Beige Book from the Federal Reserve; earnings news will come from Cracker Barrel, Land’s End, and Michael Kors. Earnings from Broadcom, Five Below, Hovnanian, and Navistar are out Thursday, plus a new initial claims report. In addition to the Department of Labor’s May employment report, Friday also presents the May ISM service sector PMI, the May factory orders report and earnings from Sears Hometown.

The potential for fire is present in any workplace. But, if you’re aware of the causes and conditions, if you’re prepared, and if you think before you act, the risk of a workplace fire and its damaging effects – on you, your co-workers or your company – can be minimized.

Following good housekeeping practices is crucial to fire prevention. That means keep heating and electrical equip-ment clean, clear, and in good repair; regularly clean ducts and fume hood filters; keep ovens and ranges clean and free of spilled fats, sugar, sauces, etc.; keep paper prod-ucts, aerosols, and other flammable materials away from heating elements; and store flammable liquids away from heat sources, exits or escape routes. To avoid electrically-caused fires, check, replace or have professionally fixed any appliance with frayed or loose cords and wires or cords that get hot during use. Avoid running cords or wires under rugs and carpets or near a heat source; and keep them out of doorways where they can become worn.

Ensure that fire protection equipment (i.e., sprinklers, smoke/heat detectors, alarms, fire hoses, fire extinguishers, and fire blankets) are maintained, available for use, and not impaired or concealed. Make sure fire extinguishers correspond to the potential risk. Know where they’re located and how to use them.

Besides training in fire prevention and protection, make sure you understand company emergency communication and evacuation procedures. Know the location of fire alarms and the telephone numbers for emergency response personnel. Report a fire, even if it seems minor. Fire fighters would rather arrive and find nothing to do than be called after it’s too late to save individuals or property. Keep in mind that all workers are responsible for preventing fires, but not everyone is expected to fight major fires. Fire fighting is best handled by trained professionals.
