ABSTRACT: Like other scientists, psychologists con-struct knowledge. To sensory data we attribute mean-ing in theoretically guided inventions of facts.' A tdifferent times and places, facts invented in onetheory become different facts in another. In eachgeneration, psychologists have pet variables that serveloyally within the theoretical boundaries of the sci-entific wisdom o f that time. I argue that pet variablescan blind us to other theories and other variablesthat could compete for our affections. I examinewhat makes theories and facts plausible and proposea continuum of persuasion, determined by the con-texts of the theorists. score. Although the proximal results promised somepayoff for children's intellectual outcomes, a moredistal variable undercut that model.Perhaps this result is peculiar to IQ. Let uslook at the children's communication skills, deter-mined by scores from the Ca in-Levine Social Com-petence Scale (Cain, Levine, ElZey, 1963) tha twas answered by the mothers. Again, the mother'spositive control and discipline techniques at Time 1predict the child's communication skills at Time 2,as shown in Figure 4. If only all mothers wouldmanage their children in more positive ways, theirchildren would be better able to carry messages,remember instructions, answer the telephone, andtell stories.But again, the importance of these proximalpredictors pales in comparison to the mother's vo-cabulary score, as shown in Figures 4 and 5. Childrenwith good communication scores have mothers withhigh WAIS vocabulary scores. Any importance o fmaternal management techniques is mediated bymaternal IQ. Mothers who are smarter behave inmore benign ways toward their children, and theirchildren have better verbal skills. Improving mothers'

discipline and control techniques will not dramati-cally improve children's language skills, even thoughthe proximal results seemed to offer this hope.
