The government is now implementing
hydropower projects by effectively utilizing
water resources.
One of them is Khabaung Hydropower
Project being implemented on Khabaung
Creek, about 15 miles west of Ottwin. So far,
the intake structure, conduit of the sluice
gate, and outfall channel of the project have
been completed. And the power station is
under construction and steel pipelines are
being laid.
Overall, 84 per cent of the whole project
has been completed up to now. Upon comple-
tion, it will be able to generate about 120
million kilowatt hours a year through 30-
megawatt generation capacity machinery.
Pathi Hydropower Project near Pathi
Creek, about 10 miles northeast of Toungoo,
has been completed nearly 40 per cent up to
now. On completion, the project will be able
to produce about eight million kilowatt hours

Poll shows most Americansback Iraq pullout timetable
WASHINGTON, 10 May — Six out of 10 Ameri-cans support setting a timetable for pulling UStroops out of Iraq, even though a clear majoritypredict civil war there if US forces withdraw nextyear, according to a poll published on Wednesday.
The USA Today/Gallup poll also found a major-ity of Americans expect terrorist attacks on the UnitedStates regardless of whether US forces pull out in2008.
The poll results “underscore the limited tractionthe Bush Administration’s arguments have gotten asWhite House officials and congressional Democratsnegotiate an interim bill to finance the war,” USAToday said.
Last week, President George W Bush vetoed a124-billion-US-dollar war funding bill because itcalled for a phased withdrawal of combat troopsstarting no later than 1 October.
“Six in 10 support setting a timetable for with-drawal and sticking to it regardless of what’s happen-ing in Iraq,” USA Today said. Thirty-six per cent saidUS troops should stay until the situation in Iraqimproved.
Only 22 per cent of those polled agreed with theadministration argument that US forces in Iraq arepreventing new terrorist attacks on the United States, the paper said.
Seventeen per cent said the US deployment madea terrorist attack more likely, and 58 per cent said ithad no effect either way, it said.
“If US troops withdraw next year, 68 per centpredict a civil war in Iraq, 66 per cent the use of Iraqas an al-Qaeda base and 55 per cent new terror attackson the United States,” USA Today said.—MNA/Reuters

booths. Besides, the town got electricity
only from 6 pm to 9 pm every day. As the
capacity of the generator was not enough
for the town’s power consumption, the
light of a 50-watt bulb was so dim. Up to
1988, the whole Shan State consumed
only about 24 megawatts.
During the time of the Tatmadaw
government, power consumption of Shan
State has risen to 12 times. Up to 1988,
the state used 24.285 million units, and
up to 2007, it used 301.46 million units.
Thanks to Zawgyi Hydelpower Plant,
power can be supplied to Loilem round
the clock. In addition to large Zawgyi 1
and Zawgyi 2 hydelpower plants, Tatgyi
and Kunhing hydelpower stations and
Tigit coal-fired power station are also
generating electricity. Now, Loilem is
sparkling with bright electricity lights at
night.
Yadanasi Sayadaw (Loilem)
The Tatmadaw government has been
building more and more power plants in
the whole nation. Head of State Senior
General Than Shwe inspected Shweli 1
Hydroelectric Power Project on 18 April
2007. The project is being implemented
on Shweli River 17 miles south-west of
Namhkam in northern Shan State.
The project will generate 600
megawatts and over 51 per cent of work
has been completed. Two more
hydropower projects on the river -- the
Shweli 2, with 460-megawatt generation
capacity, in Moemeik Township, and the
Shweli 3, with 360-megawatt generation
capacity -- will also be implemented.
The 54-megawatt Kengtawng
hydropower plant project near
Kengtawng Falls in Loilem District, Shan
State (South) and the 7110-megawatt
Tarhsan hydropower plant project on
Thanlwin River in Mongpang Township
will also supply electricity to the nation
in the future.
Apart from power projects to supply
electricity to the whole country, the
Tatmadaw government is also developing
the education sector. The number of basic
education students in Shan State has
increased nearly 200 per cent, school
enrollment rate, 289.18 per cent, and adult
literacy rate, 216.85 per cent when
compared with 1988.
Up to 1988, Shan State did not have an
arts and science university. The Tatmadaw
government has established two arts and
science universities and one degree college,
at which over 20,000 students are pursuing
higher education. Four special
development zones have been set up in
Shan State for its development. Taunggyi
special development zone in southern
Shan State and Panglong special
development zone now have a
Technological University and a Computer
University each. According to the list
collected in 2005, the two universities
had 6598 students.
Thanks to the efforts and goodwill
of the Ministry of Information, Myanmar

the aim of raising the entire people's
education and intellectual level, widening
their scope of knowledge, enhancing their
thinking power and the power to control
their mind and nurturing them to have
correct concepts, and enabling them to
lead a stable life and to differentiate
between right and wrong. Up to 55,717
self-reliant rural libraries had been opened
in Myanmar on 31 March 2007 thanks to
the combined efforts of the government,
the local people and the donors.
A grand ceremony to mark the
opening of rural libraries in Shan State
(South) was held in Taunggyi on 2-4-
2007. At the ceremony, a trust fund was

LONDON, 10 May — Chelsea and ManchesterUnited, league champions old and new, produced astrictly mid-table performance on Wednesday in agoalless showdown that came a month too late.
The game, which should have been one of thehighlights of the season, was downgraded to deadrubber status when United secured the title on Sundayby virtue of Chelsea only drawing 1-1 at Arsenal.
It would have been very different if the fixture hadbeen played when originally scheduled for FA Cupsemifinal weekend in April, when United were justthree points ahead, but with the teams due to meetagain in the Cup final on May 19 it became a more ofa damage-limitation exercise.
Alex Ferguson put out a virtual second-stringteam. China forward Fangzhuo Dong donned the redshirt competitively for the first time more than threeyears after joining the club, full back Kieran Leemade his first league appearance and Chris Eagles hisfirst start. Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinandand Michael Carrick were on the bench and CristianoRonaldo not involved at all.
Chelsea were much more recognizable, thoughthey too gave a first start to 18-year-old forward ScottSinclair in the continuing absence of 31-goal strikerDidier Drogba and for once were without FrankLampard, missing for only the second time in 62games. — MNA/Reuters

Saudi Arabia holds USresponsible for violent
Iraqi situationCAIRO, 10 May —
Saudi Arabia held the USresponsible for the currentviolent situation in Iraq andinsists its opposition tomilitary solution to the issueof the war-torn country, aSaudi Arabia diplomat toldXinhua here on Wednesday.
"The US should hold100-per-cent responsibilityfor what is going on in Iraq, our policy is still the sameas before, that is for politicalsolution, against militarysolution," said Mutlaq Saudal-Mutiri, Press attache ofthe Saudi Arabian Embassyin Cairo.
On the US plan to send35,000 extra troops to Iraqlater this year, Mutiri saidthe US decision was meantto show that extra troopsare needed to prove itssuccess in Iraq, terming theissue of troops withdrawalfrom Iraq as a pureAmerican affair.
“We must admit thereis an ethnic war in Iraq now,
and the violence there willnot be reduced until the endof this ethnic war," heasserted, calling for morefocus on the reality of thestate itself, rather than thedivision between the religiongroups of Sunnis and Shiites.
On the internationalconferences on Iraq held inEgypt's Red Sea resort ofSharm el-Sheikh, Mutirisaid that the meetings aimedto probe ways how toreduce the violence in Iraq, and the bilateral meetingsand contacts between theUS and Syria and Iranindicated the USwillingness to give thesetwo countries a role in Iraq.
