Brothers and Sisters,

Brothers and Sisters, We have come to the end of the year 2020. What a year it has been. We can only hope and pray that the year 2021 will bring us safer and brighter days. I hope that by the time you are reading this message, a system-atic procedure is in place to distribute vacci-

nations to this awful Covid-19 Virus. As our Holiday season draws to a close, first lady

Susan and I wish each of you and your families a very happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year. A year that will be much better for all of us than this past year. Traditionally, New Year’s is a time to reflect on good fortunes for the forth com-ing year.

Our year at Brumidi Lodge was not a total loss. We, as a lodge, were able to run almost everything we wanted to run/host after taking into considerations the Federal, State, and Local restrictions that were put upon us. I am proud to an-nounce that we ran successful events under these restrictions while keeping the safety and health of the guest/member up-most in our planning and execution. This enabled us to fund-raise, entertain, and be fraternal.

I would like to thank our Brumidi catering staff for a fabulous menu at our annual Officers Christmas Party. Al-though we had to be separated and wear masks when not eat-ing/drinking, we still enjoyed each other’s company in the spirit of the Christmas Season. I thank the Officers and Trus-tees for their very generous and unnecessary Christmas Gift. Believe me, it will be put to good use. To the members that are not aware, I am coming to the end of my second term as your Lodge President. My first year, 2018, was at that time, a 1-year term. We then applied to the Grand Lodge to have two-year terms and it was approved. My second and third year as your president fulfilled my sec-ond term. Therefore, this March will be the end of my presi-dency. I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the past 3 years because this issue of the LaVoce is actually being printed and mailed and there is no guarantee that this will con-tinue with the financial unknowns. In January 2018, I was unexpectedly asked to step up to the plate and become your lodge president. Although I have held various positions as an officer and director, I did not move up the chairs in the normal order. One might question if that would happen again with any officer. However, with some hesitation, I decided to step up to the plate for the lodge. No sooner was I sworn in as your president, I was in the middle of medical issues. While at work one day, I had a severe ringing in my right ear which led me to have multiple tests and ultimately biopsy surgery that revealed I had cancer of the nasopharynx. I was not impacted physically at this time, but human emotions had an effect. As time progressed, I had two major 8 hour surgical operations and now I would be both physical and emotionally affected. With your prayers and support, I continued and rode the highs and lows of this medical wave. One moment I will always remember is when I dragged myself into the 2018 Fashion

Show with 60 staples in my head. As I walked into the lobby, you all gave me a standing ovation. That was worth the trip and the physical effort. With the support of the officers and directors, I was able to be somewhat affective as your lodge president and you all gave me the fuel to continue. 2019 brought another 3 operations that would open my breathing. I was then married to a seven-inch tube in my left nostril. Feel-ing very abnormal in public, you, the members made me feel as comfortable as the situation would allow. I thank you for that. After getting used to the breathing tube, the paralysis on the right side of my face, and the consistent weakened physical state, another monkey wrench was thrown into my presidency. The pandemic of 2020 consumed my final year as president. Now I had both the challenge of worrying about my self as well as all the well-being of the members. With the help and cooperation of the directors and the operating procedures of our building, we were able to schedule events as stated earlier in my article in a safe manner. It is unfortunate that I did not have one year in office with either no medical issues or no national pandemic, but those are the cards I was dealt and I think, I came up with the best hand possible, thanks to you. We accomplished many things together, changes for the better. Lodge 50th Anniversary festivities, history display cabinet in the lobby, Constantino Brumidi lapel pins, new membership cards, member photo frame and automobile de-cals are among the many things we did. The two, I am most proud of, are the Member of the Month Program and the in-creased exposure of our lodge in the local papers and the Golden Lion. A wise man once said there is no “I” in the word “Team” and this was proven with all your help and support. Lastly, I ask that you support Sabrina Savino as she looks to move up into the position of Lodge President. Give her the same, if not more support that you gave me. Her heart is in the right place for our lodge. Remember to continue to promote your lodge through our website, facebook and our award win-ning newsletter, the LaVoce. It is bitter sweet that I leave this position; but, it is time to take a little rest. With teary eyes I thank each and every one of you for all your work and dedica-tion in helping us maintain and promote our Italian traditions. I love you all. Remember, Keep the Faith!

In the early sixties new lodges were forming on Long Island. Mario Mesisco summoned personal friends to help recruit, organize and establish a lodge in the Deer Park—North Babylon area. Together, with prospective members the name of Constantino Brumidi was chosen. Brumidi, known as the “Michelangelo of the U.S. Capitol” is famous for his work in the canopy of the Rotunda and many frescos covering 5,000 square feet, painted in 16 months while he lay on his back 180 feet above the floor. The “Brumidi Corridors” are located on the first floor of the Senate wing. Born of Italian and Greek parents, his goal in life was to become an American citizen, which was granted in 1852, taking up residence in New York City. After spending more than twenty-five years painting inside the Capitol, he fell from scaffolding, died from his injuries in 1880 and is buried in an unmarked grave. It was this 28th day of February, 1969, that The Supreme Council of the Supreme Lodge of the Order Sons of Italy in America, with approval of the Grand Executive Council of the State of New York awarded full consent and authority to Mario Mesisco, Angelo Zeoli and Joseph Daino to constitute a regular subordinate lodge in Suffolk County, N.Y. under the title and name of CONSTANTINO BRUMIDI LODGE NO. 2211.
