Puerto Rico’s Knowledge Economy is greatly suffering from a brain drain of top-notch,younghumancapital. Whilemanyoftheprofessionalsindiasporaareeagerto identify ways to engage with professionals back home and contribute to theIsland’s social and economic development, Puerto Rico lacks well-establishedinfrastructures with capacity to receive and disseminateknowledge and resources
transferred from its diaspora. Furthermore, Puerto Rico’s professional networksrarely offer spaces for engagement and collaboration between Puerto RicoprofessionalsontheIslandandabroad.

Despite Puerto Rico’s high unemployment rate, local employersstruggle to find talentedworkers with the skills needed tocompete and succeed intoday’s job market and 21stcentury economy. At thesame time, “Opportunity Youth” often have a difficult timefindingaccessandexposuretodeveloptheseneededskillsandtalents, duetothelackofmentoring, internship, andhiringprogramsthatprovidepipelinesto trainandmatch themwith the right opportunities. A meager 24.5% of Puerto Rico’s youth ages 16 – 24
participate in its labor force. This “Opportunity Divide” not only hinders private sectorgrowth potential and long-termeconomic competitiveness, it also presents a social andeconomicinjusticeagainstouryouth.

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have historically been at the forefront ofinnovation and enterprise. Yet, in recent years, they have received increasedpressure to innovate and think entrepreneurially about how to maximize theirimpactand providestudentsandsociety at-large with theskills and knowledgethat allow them to come up with innovate solutions to today’s social andeconomic challenges. In order to assume their historical role as engines ofchange, our HEIs must take advantage of the full spectrum of institutionalresourcesattheirdisposaltoleveragethetoolsandbenefitsofsocialinnovationandsocialentrepreneurshiptothebenefitofPuertoRicansociety.
