Adventurous Fulfillment

Season Review

Page 2: Conor Daly 2011 Season Review

What a season. Itʼs a little unusual to have a team owner say that a driver was remarkable, amazing and/or did a fantastic job. They were the words used by Carlin team owner, Trevor Carlin, at the conclusion of the 2011 GP3 season in Monza, Italy.

During the course of the sixteen race season, Conor went from the back of the grid in Turkey in race one, to lead the last race of the year in Monza, Italy. Along the way he became known as “the best passer in GP3”, set fastest race laps in Silverstone and Monza, set a race pace 10 seconds faster than the winner in Silverstone and never made a mistake that took him out of a race.

In the Firestone Indy Lights championship, Conorʼs five race program was nothing short of remarkable. He proved to be the fastest driver in the series during his first three races and after winning Long Beach in April, he led the championship points table, but then left for Europe - no championship leader has ever left before when leading the points table.

When he returned at the end of the season he again showed his speed by qualifying on the front row in Trois Rivieres, Canada and on the pole in Baltimore, MD.

At 19 years of age, Conor has a broad foundation built with American and now European experiences. He has begun to influence European teams who have recognized him as “a person of interest”. Despite its difficulty, he is committed to the European route for the coming years and looks forward to repaying the faith that so many have had in him for many years.

Thank you sincerely for your support.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED WITH A DALY DOUBLE

“Daly is the best passer in GP3” – Will Buxton, Eurosport & Speed TV

“Conor Daly was a bit of a star coming from the back and setting fastest laps like that" Ian Titchmarsh, British commentator, Silverstone, England.

“Conor did a fantastic job today...he can still be extremely proud of his race. His numerous overtaking moves were perfect and he provided the highlights of the race.” Racing Director Trevor Carlin

Seldom does a driver ever attempt dual racing programs with the Atlantic ocean splitting the two series. Conor Daly did just that this year and again displayed a unique ability to learn and perform under pressure - while racking up the frequent flyer miles. After more transatlantic crossings in eight months

than most people complete in 20 years, Conor used his season well to establish his credentials in Europe and continued to confirm to the American audience that he possesses that X Factor ability in a race car.

Formula Oneʼs support series, GP3 was Conorʼs focus with a secondary program being a limited schedule in the North American Firestone Indy Lights Championship. GP3 would take him to eight different countries during the European races of the Formula One season and Indy Lights would take him to the high profile events in support of the IZOD Indycar series. It proved to be a fascinating season that has laid the foundation for the most significant steps of Conorʼs young career.

After four concentrated days of testing in Sebring, Barber, Alabama, Homestead & Palm Beach Motorsports Park, Conor proved to be the fastest Sam Schmidt Motorsports team driver in just about every session at The Firestone Indy Lights Championship in St Petersburg, Florida. In the race morning warm up he was fastest and he also set fastest race lap while coming from 4th place to 2nd in a charging drive.

A t t h e s t a r t h e attempted to use 2nd g e a r f o r a n acceleration “jump” but immediately hit the rev limiter. That momentary hesitation caused him to be swamped into the brake zone at turn one. In the ensuing s c r a m b l e , h e emerged in 4th place behind race leader Peter Dempsey, Josef N e w g a r d e n a n d Argentinian Esteban Guerrieri (who won 6 races in the 2010 W o r l d S e r i e s b y Renault European championship). Josef & Esteban passed Dempsey when he made a mistake and by the time Conor passed him six laps later (with 2 daring lunges in the turn one brake zone - the first of which did not quite succeed) - the leaders were already three seconds in front.

Conor then set about his charge towards the front setting fastest lap of the race on lap 31 of 45. With 8 laps to go there was a full course yellow. On the re-start Conor forced his way past Guerrieri in the brake zone at turn one and then ran out of time to challenge Newgarden. The weekend was an impressive display of unmatched speed for Conor before he boarded a plane to England for three days of GP3 testing in Silverstone England.

Page 7: Conor Daly 2011 Season Review

Long BeachIn Long Beach the television announcer might have said it best when Conor rolled into victory circle at the Long Beach Grand Prix – “It was only a matter of time until Conor Daly stood on the top step of the podium”. He was aware that Conor had been the fastest Indy Lights driver in all three races this season and justice was finally served when Conor scored the biggest win of his career at the famed Long Beach Grand Prix.

It was a display of speed (fastest race lap), precision and discipline as he worked his way from his fourth place starting position to the front on what is regarded as one of the most difficult circuits on which to pass. He applied relentless pressure to the leaders and watched mistakes being made between the unforgiving concrete walls. His opportunistic pass into turn one on a restart, to move into second place, was a prime example of forcing the issue when only half an opportunity is presented.

This all happened even though he missed Fridayʼs practice as he was traveling back from three days of GP3 testing in Barcelona, Spain. Few drivers would consider such a grueling travel schedule. In a ten day

span, between April 8th – 17th, Conor was in a race car nine of those 10 days on two different continents in three different time zones . He reckoned tha t adrenaline was more valuable than sleep.

Daly “Star of the Show” in VALENCIA

Conor Dalyʼs seventh place finish did not do his drive

justiceMAZDASPEED driver Conor Daly, put in the drive of the race to move from his 12th starting position to finish in 7th place at the checkered flag. It was how he got there however, that was impressive. On a

circuit where it is notoriously difficult to pass, Daly provided the highlights of the race by relentlessly pursuing the leaders until he began to pick them off.

Daly would start race two from the 12th starting position in round six of the 16 race championship. After a good start he was 10th at the end of the first lap. He moved to 9th on lap five after passing British driver,

Nick Yelloly. Two laps later he caught the leading group of eight cars and passed Saturdayʼs race winner, Andian Quaife-Hobbs in a difficult outside move in the brake zone. Next up was Saturdayʼs pole sitter and Red Bull development driver, Lewis Williamson. With three laps to go, Daly was able to execute the same perfect outside move in the same brake zone on Williamson. At this stage Daly had become the feature of the race on the European television broadcast, as he was the only driver in the race making real progress through the field.

“The car was really good the whole race.  I had lots of pace and was able to work my way past people one by one.  I felt like I made some good moves; I was able to brake really late which helped

me. I didnʼt realize I was in the points in the final few corners, and I saw a gap for what I thought was sixth and I just went for it. Itʼs a shame that it didnʼt work out but weʼve shown today that weʼve got great pace and I know the points will come” said Daly.

R a c i n g D i r e c t o r Trevor Carlin added, “ C o n o r d i d a f a n t a s t i c j o b today.  Itʼs a pity that his efforts weren ʼt rewarded with a point, but he can still be extremely proud of his race.  His numerous over tak ing moves were perfect and he p r o v i d e d t h e highlights of the race.”

D a l y ʼ s b e s t GP3 weekend yet at SpaIt was never going to be easy because Conor had never raced there before b u t i t w o u l d b e o n arguably the best Grand P r i x c i r c u i t o n t h e

c a l e n d a r . S p a , Francorchamps in the Ardennes Forest of Belgium, is considered to be the true test of a driver because of its fast spectacular corners that can become treacherous in the rain. Spa is also notorious for its weather changes where it can be raining on one half of the circuit, yet have sunshine on the other half. This past weekend was no different.

Race one on Saturday afternoon was again held in typical Spa weather; wet, overcast and cold. After starting 6th, he passed British driver, Nick Yelolly around the outside at Les Coombs at the end of the long straight on the first lap. Yelolly did not want to yield the position and the two cars touched breaking Yelollyʼs suspension. The contact rubbed the Pirelli logo off Conorʼs right rear tire.

After five laps, the focus of the race became Conor and British driver (and championship leader), Alexander Sims. Sims attempted for three laps to make his move to pass Conor. On lap seven Conor caused his team owner Trevor Carlin, to jump from his seat as the television cameras caught Conor almost losing control through the flat out 145 MPH Blanchemont corner when his car slid sideways over the outside curbs with Conor fighting to keep control. Sims did not believe Conor could control the car and backed off to “watch the accident”. It never happened as Conor maintained control but Sims thought that that would be his overtaking point on the next lap. Next time by he lined up Conor for the attempt and made a lunge for the inside line. Just before the apex and in the wet conditions he lost control however, spinning off and hitting Conorʼs left rear wheel at close to 145 MPH. Sims apologized after the race for the contact. Conor finished a season high 5th place.

Hectic travel 1 - Would you do this?Within 60 minutes of the finish of the Indy Lights race in Barber, Alabama, Conor was on a plane to Barcelona, Spain for three days of testing. He arrived on Monday, tested Tuesday - Thursday and then boarded a 14 hour flight to Long Beach, California. He missed Fridayʼs practice sessions and went on to win Sundayʼs race at the back end of his most hectic travel schedule to date.

Hectic travel 2 - Would you do this?At the end of the season Conor did a stretch where he visited 11 countries; England, Germany, Hungary, Belgium, Canada, America, Belgium, England, America, England, America, in 10 consecutive weekends. Thatʼs four different continents and nine different time zones. Think about the frequent flyer miles.

Do you like my Mazda?

How cool is my Mazda? Mazda England provided Conor with a very cool Mazda 3 Diesel turbo to wind his way through Europe with during the season. Graeme Fudge arranged it all through a request from John Doonan of Mazda America. Conor drove it everywhere including to the Goodwood Speed Festival and to the Nurburgring. He even took it for a lap of the famous 14 mile Nordshleife track that sits adjacent to the new modern Grand Prix circuit.

How many team mates would you like?Usually a driver would have two team mates during the season. This year Conor had three as Frenchman, Tom Dillman left after the first race and was replaced by Canadian, Daniel Morad. Morad lasted until Silverstone in July when he took his tent and went home leaving Conorʼs driving coach, Brit, Callum McLeod, to drive the car for the rest of the season.

Silverstone10 seconds faster race pace than winnerSilverstone was a watershed moment for Conor because of his sheer race pace. His race pace was 10 seconds faster than the winners pace. So what happened?

It began to rain just before the start and half the field (including Conor) gambled that the rain would not last. It was the wrong gamble and Conor pitted for wet tires at the end of the final warm up lap. By the time he got serviced, he was 22 seconds behind the leader at the start. He proceeded to set multiple fastest race laps on his way to a 15th place finish. The amazing thing about his drive was that his race pace from start to finish was 10 seconds faster than the winner. On Sunday he finished in seventh position having caught and passed Saturdayʼs race winner, Nico Muller.

DALY DOMINATES IN BALTIMORE UNTIL BRUSH WITH WALL  What a race; it had everything. The eventual winner, Gustavo Yacaman, hit Peter Dempsey before the start, hit Conor twice during the pace lap, overshot the hairpin twice, spun at the hairpin, yet came home the winner. However the race was dominated and controlled by MAZDASPEED driver Conor Daly. He was the class of the Firestone Indy LIghts field again on the streets of Baltimore this afternoon but a brush with the wall with 14 laps of the the 35 left to run eventually put him out.

Daly got the jump at the start from his pole starting position but got passed by Colombian, Gustavo Yacaman into the hairpin on the first lap. Yacaman overshot the corner and Daly re-took

Page 16: Conor Daly 2011 Season Review
Page 17: Conor Daly 2011 Season Review

the lead. He then began to inch away building a 1.5 second lead when a full course yellow caution flag was brought out for a spin by Irishman, Peter Dempsey.

At the restart, Daly again took control and built a lead of almost two seconds over t e a m m a t e , E s t e b a n Guerrieri, when he brushed the wall  somewhere around lap 21. The contact bent the right rear toe link and Daly's braking became unstable causing him to lose the lead on Lap 23. Two laps later the rear toe link snapped at 100MPH immediately turning the car to the right and into the wall. Daly retired on the spot.

“That hurt. It's a shame because I had complete control of the race up until that point" said, Daly. I don't remember hitting the wall. There was no impact that I could feel. After lap 21 I could feel the car getting

more and more unstable in the brake zones and right handers but I was not sure what was wrong”.

Big D and the Dalyʼs - 34 years apartDerek McMahon who is better known as Big D, is a long time motor sports lover from Donegal, Ireland. He was Conorʼs Dadʼs mentor from 1977 and took him into Formula One in 1978. Big D is larger than life and much in evidence during the Silverstone weekend. Have a look at the two photos that were taken 34 years apart - Big D talking to two generations of Dalyʼs, and probably giving the same advice..

2012What does 2012 hold in store for Conor? The plan will be to return to GP3 and reap the benefits of spending the 2011 season gaining the knowledge and experience to challenge for race wins and for the championship. By staying in the Formula One paddock there is more of an opportunity to impress the Formula One teams.

No other driver improved as consistently during the season as Conor. Within 16 races he went from the back of the grid at the first race in Turkey to leading the final race of the season in Monza, Italy.

Along the way he also established himself as the “best passer in GP3” according to television commentator, Will Buxton. Despite being one of the more aggressive drivers of the season, he never made a single mistake that took him out of a race.

The 2011 season was made possible by a group of dedicated supporters; Doug Mockett, Gary Eyler (The College Network), Sunny Smith (Callcap), Mazdaspeed, Barry McMahon (Aspin Group), William Mann (Modspace), Rod Campbell and Phil Gumpert (Tom Lange Company) with additional support from, Alpinestars, St. Vincent Sports Performance Center and Arai helmets.

MAZDASPEED & CONOR DALY 2011 PLANS CONFIRMED

-- Mazda Road to Indy Balanced With European GP3 --

February 17, 2011 (Irvine, Calif). Conor Daly has spent the past three years racing with Mazda, winning two championships along the way. For 2011 Conor will showcase his talents as a part of both the newly created Mazda Road to Indy with Sam Schmidt Motorsports, and in the European GP3 series with the British based Carlin team.

“The past two-and-a-half years has presented enormous business challenges for drivers,

manufacturers, and race series. Conor has done an outstanding job of delivering the goods both on-track, and off-track to his business supporters. As we transition into the Mazda Road to Indy beginning with the 2011 season we needed to make sure that Conor could take a step up in his career, while meeting everyone’s business objectives. Thanks to Mazda, the people at INDYCAR, Sam Schmidt Motorsports, and Carlin, Conor should have an outstanding year,” noted John Doonan, MAZDASPEED Motorsports Team Development Manager.

Conor enthused, "I'm extremely pleased to have all the plans worked out for 2011. It's taken a lot

of work and I'm extremely thankful to everyone at Mazda who spent a great deal of time making sure my program was in order. It really shows how dedicated Mazda is to their ladder drivers. With the significant changes to the ladder system in 2010, Mazda still stayed devoted to supporting their champions. I'm honored to have the support of Mazda for the 2011 season and beyond."

Conor will race the entire GP3 season with Carlin, and non-conflicting road-course dates in the

Firestone Indy Lights Championship with Sam Schmidt Motorsports. GP3 is a Formula One support series that races only at European Formula One venues. Carlin is one of ten teams who compete with three cars per team. Conor will be based in England during the racing season.

03/22/11 Daly’s transatlantic race program starts with St Petersburg

Conor DalyThis weekend, Mazdaspeed driver Conor Daly will have his bags packed again for two different continents. Within hours of the finish of the opening round of the Firestone Indy Lights race in St, Petersburg, Florida, March 25th – 27th, Daly will be on a plane to England for three days of GP3 testing on the Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit, starting March, 29th. The hectic travel schedule forms part of a unique learning opportunity for Daly by racing with top class teams on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.Sam Schmidt Motorsports has been coaching Daly through the unique requirements of the Indy Lights car at three recent Florida test sessions in Sebring, Homestead & Palm Beach International raceway. “The test days have been a great experience for me because I quickly realized that the driving style needed was very different to anything I have become accustomed to in the past. Sam Schmidt Motorsports has a wealth of knowledge and I’m trying to soak up as much information as possible.” said Daly.

Daly will return to the scene of fond 2010 season memories because St Petersburg started a remarkable run of four consecutive race wins in the Star Mazda championship, when he dominated the Road to Indy support series race from the pole and also set fastest race lap. “I love street racing”, said Daly. “Last year was a dream weekend and I’m sure that some of the things I learned can be used again this coming weekend. St Pete is a mega IndyCar weekend and a driver like me wants to impress the IndyCar team owners”, said Daly.

Daly won’t get to enjoy the IndyCar race however, as within hours of the end of his race, he will board a plane in Tampa bound for London, England.

Daly will form part of a four-car Sam Schmidt Motorsports team with America’s Josef Newgarden, Argentina’s Esteban Guerrieri and Brazilian Victor Carbone. Daly is the 2010 Formula Star Mazda champion having set records for number of race wins (7), number of pole positions, (9), number of podium finishes, (12), number of laps led and largest winning points margin ever. In 2008, he won the Walter Hayes Formula Ford Trophy in England for Team USA scholarship, the Ontario Formula Ford Rookie of the Year title and the Mazda Skip Barber National championship.

06/26/11 American Conor Daly shows first signs of real success in GP3 MAZDASPEED driver Conor Daly, second-generation formula car racer, put in the drive of the race to move from his 12th starting position to finish in 7th place at the checkered flag. It was how he got there however, that was impressive. On a circuit where it is notoriously difficult to pass, Daly provided the highlights of the race by relentlessly pursuing the leaders until he began to pick them off.Having moved from 25th on the grid to finish 12th in race one on Saturday, Daly would start race two from the 12th starting position in round six of the 16 race championship. After a good start he was 10th at the end of the first lap. He moved to 9th on lap five after passing British driver, Nick Yelloly. Two laps later he caught the leading group of eight cars and passed Saturday’s race winner, Adrian Quaife-Hobbs in a difficult outside move in the brake zone. Next up was Saturday’s pole sitter and Red Bull development driver, Lewis Williamson. With three laps to go, Daly was able to execute the same perfect outside move in the same brake zone on Williamson. At this stage Daly had become the feature of the race on the European television broadcast, as he was the only driver in the race making real progress through the field.

After British driver, Dean Stoneman was handed a drive through penalty for ignoring waver yellow flags, Daly was now running 6th, the last points paying position. The notoriously difficult to pass Colombian, Gabby Chaves in 5th place was next on his list and Daly caught him starting the final lap. His only chance to pass came at the final corner of the last lap when he made a last gasp effort to pass him only to be forced off the track by Chaves in a desperate move not to be passed. Both drivers missed the apex turn in point and by the time they sorted themselves out, Williamson slipped by to take 6th place (and the final championship point) from Daly by a mere eight hundredths of a second.

“The car was really good the whole race. I had lots of pace and was able to work my way past people one by one. I felt like I made some good moves; I was able to brake really late which helped me. I didn’t realize I was in the points in the final few corners, and I saw a gap for what I thought was sixth and I just went for it. It’s a shame that it didn’t work out but we’ve shown today that we’ve got great pace and I know the points will come,” said Daly.

Racing Director Trevor Carlin added, “Conor did a fantastic job today. It’s a pity that his efforts weren’t rewarded with a point, but he can still be extremely proud of his race. His numerous overtaking moves were perfect and he provided the highlights of the race.”

Daly now moves on to Silverstone, England, July 9th – 10th, for the next races of the championship to be held in support of the British Grand Prix.

Globetrotting Daly back on home soil MAZDASPEED driver Conor Daly, an American teenager on a mission, plans to continue his march at the front of the Firestone Indy Lights field this weekend in Baltimore, MD. Just five days ago he enjoyed his best European results of his rookie season at the ultra fast Spa Francorchamps Circuit in Belgium. For the globe-trotting teenager the Grand Prix of Baltimore is part of a nine country swing over an eight week period. By far the most travelled young American driver, Daly is running a five race limited Indy Lights schedule in support of his European racing effort. This season Daly has chosen what is perhaps the most difficult path possible, combining a full European schedule with a limited Firestone Indy Lights program of five races. Incredibly, after the first three Indy Lights races of the season, Daly left the series as the championship leader after winning on the streets of Long Beach in April.“The travel has been crazy, but I don’t mind it at all. It has become part of how I live and race,” comments Daly. “I am very happy to be back home and heading back to Indy Lights with Sam Schmidt Motorsports. I am especially excited to be coming back to Baltimore and a street course. Street racing is very difficult and the streets of Baltimore will be no different, especially when it’s the first ever event. I let one slip away at Trois Rivieres and I owe the team one for sure.”

The past weekend at Spa was near magical for the 19-year-old who has become known in the GP3 paddock as a prolific passer. Daly qualified his best ever by setting the sixth fastest time. In race one held on Saturday afternoon, Daly took fifth, his best finish so far this season in GP3 action. That slotted Daly into the fourth spot on the grid for the start of race two held on Sunday morning. A spin on lap one cost him some spots, but Daly recovered to finish seventh.

“Spa was amazing and now my focus is back to Indy Lights. No one has ever done what I am trying to do so there is no manual to follow,” smiles Daly. “I was able to jump back in the Indy Lights car in Three Rivers and run at the front. I really like the idea hitting another street circuit between two really fast tracks like Spa and Monza.”

Immediately following this weekend’s action in Baltimore, Daly will return to Europe, heading to Monza, Italy, for the final two rounds of the GP3 Series.
