VEMCON TOOLMANAGEMENT: THE PERFECT TOOL USED AT ALL TIMES Vemcon tool management Connectivity to maximise machine utilization Master complexity with tool management A single excavator’s tool has to be changed up to 100 times a day. It is easy to lose track of the right tool, optimal use and wear and tear. The increasing number and variety of machines multiples the challenge faced. Particularly in mixed fleets, this leads to a complexity of machines, attachments and tools that only a few skilled workers and contractors can handle. This results in inadequate machine utilisation and in the worst case to machine downtime. Vemcon’s cloud-based tool management lets operators steer their machine and allows contractors to control the entire fleet. They can avoid downtime and maximise machine utilisation as tool management can answer important questions: Which tool do I require for which step in the work process? Which machines in my fleet are currently using the tool? Where can I get the tool the fastest? What condition is the tool in? Tool management is universally applicable – regardless of tool, machine and use. Even the basic version provides information about the tool’s entire life cycle and allows remote maintenance: Information about geometrics, name, manufacturer, year, ID, mode of operation (e.g. required pressure) is stored in the ToolTracker – digital type plate Recording of hours of operation and operation cycles, evaluation and recognition of work processes GPS position of the tool and time stamp - when and where the tool was taken and how it was used

Connectivity to maximise machine utilization

Master complexity with tool managementA single excavator’s tool has to be changed up to 100 times a day. It is easy to lose track of the right tool, optimal use and wear and tear. The increasing number and variety of machines multiples the challenge faced. Particularly in mixed eets, this leads to a complexity of machines, attachments and tools that only a few skilled workers and contractors can handle. This results in inadequate machine utilisation and in the worst case to machine downtime.

Vemcon’s cloud-based tool management lets operators steer their machine and allows contractors to control the entire eet. They can avoid downtime and maximise machine utilisation as tool management can answer important questions:

Which tool do I require for which step in the work process?

Which machines in my eet are currently using the tool?

Where can I get the tool the fastest?

What condition is the tool in?

Tool management is universally applicable – regardless of tool, machine and use. Even the basic version provides information about the tool’s entire life cycle and allows remote maintenance:

Information about geometrics, name, manufacturer, year, ID, mode of operation (e.g. required pressure) is stored in the ToolTracker – digital type plate

Recording of hours of operation and operation cycles, evaluation and recognition of work processes

GPS position of the tool and time stamp - when and where the tool was taken and how it was used

Reliable connectivity and data exchange

The tool management system consists of the Vemcon ToolTracker on the tool as well as connecting it with a terminal and/or in the cloud. The ToolTracker measures vibrations and positions on the tool. The basic version has the ToolTracker communicate its data directly to the cloud via LTE, and so independent of the machine. From there, the data can be read using any terminal device, so no terminal in the machine is necessary. The advanced version includes a terminal in the cabin. Data is sent from the ToolTracker to the terminal via Bluetooth. From here, the data is transmitted to the cloud, also via LTE. The type, frequency and transmission release of exchanged data can be individually adjusted.

Additional bene ts from networking with the terminal in the advanced version:

The ToolTracker is especially energy-e cient and durable.

The terminal inside the machine lets operators safely operate the quick coupler and is functionally safe developed. In addition, the terminal interacts with the operator via various tool displays.

Operators and contractors can take advantage of additional functions in the terminal, such as more information about the tool and the entire work ow, as well as providing operators with assistance and automation.

Simple expansion thanks to technology platform – cost-e cient and future-proof

Tool management takes full advantage of the Vemcon technology platform. Quick coupler control can be implemented cost-e ectively. Modular assembly of all the necessary hardware and software components ensures interface compatibility and also seamless communication between machines, tools, attachments and the cloud. Hardware modules required in the future are also available with the basic version in the terminal. External expansion modules available as hardware with supporting apps, e.g.: tiltrotator CAN module, excavator hydraulics control, drive unit, shield, boom sensors, measurement of tool stress or overload (e.g. temperature), stick. Interfaces to common navigation systems can be easily extended via software.

The machine‘s terminal features exceptionally high processing power to enable all automation tasks. It can be upgraded at any time with apps for operator assistance and connectivity. Apps for operator assistance include Vemcon CoPilot functions ranging from the simple display of machine information to complete excavator automation. Depending on the ver-sion of tool management, connectivity apps provide online tool data such as pressure during the drilling process, the tool’s GPS position and even entire work cycles.

All this lets machine contractors receive a cost-e cient, easily upgradable and thus future-proof tool management.

Service providers deliver productivity-enhancing digital solutions and valuable data from the current work process – ranging from quality control over tool management to excavator automation.
