February Is American Heart Month. A newsletter for Orange Regional Medical Center employees, physicians and volunteers February 2016 From The President & CEO We have accomplished great things over the past several years and we have many more successes ahead. We have been able to grow our organization and raise the bar on the standard of care we provide because we have worked together as a team, sharing the same mission and strategy while working hard at shifting our culture. There is always room for improvement no matter how high we reach. The year ahead will be just as exhilarating as past years. It will require all of us to continue putting our patients and their families first while working hard at accomplishing our goals in 2016. We will complete construction on our new Cancer Center and Physician Office Building this year. We anticipate relocation of employees and services in late September. The Medical Group will continue to expand by adding additional Primary Care providers and specialists while continuing to focus on developing processes and procedures, enhancing customer services and increasing overall patient volume in 2016. Our Magnet designation is anticipated this year. Our nursing department has worked hard, with the support of the entire organization, to bring us to the point of survey. If attained, we will have earned the highest recognition level for nursing care in the nation. Additionally, we will be surveyed by the Joint Commission this year. Being survey ready must be a daily occurrence. We will work toward achieving Stage 7 Level designation with EPIC, our electronic health record system. Stage 7 hospitals deliver patient care without the use of paper charts; share patient information electronically with other care providers; use a vast database of clinical information to drive enhanced care delivery performance, patient safety clinical decision support, and outcomes using business intelligence solutions; and are best-practice examples of how to implement sophisticated EHR systems. In the coming year, the Foundation will continue fundraising for The Future Is Orange capital campaign to fund our expansion. Your support is greatly appreciated. Additionally, we will increase our telemetry services to include 2 West and to a portion of the ED, complete the system-wide rollout of the Strata system used for budgeting, implement valet parking for patients and visitors, and add an Internal Residency to our Graduate Medical Education offerings. We are continuing the development of strategic plans for key product lines including the Emergency Room to enhance staffing and improve clinical outcomes. We have committed to 24/7 Trauma surgeon coverage and we are working towards a Level II Trauma designation with the anticipation of an American College of Surgeons (ACS) site visit in March 2017. As always, it’s necessary to keep a close eye on expenses and to be actively engaged in delivering a positive patient experience with each and every encounter. These are just a few of the goals for 2016. Thank you for all you’ve done to bring us to this point and for your dedication and commitment moving forward. From The President & CEOWe have accomplished great things over the past several years and we have many more successes ahead.

The Medical Group will continue to expand by adding

additional Primary Care providers and specialists while continuing to focus on developing processes and procedures, enhancing customer services and increasing overall patient volume in 2016.

Influenza Mandate The New York State Department of Health Commissioner has declared influenza to be prevalent in New York State for the current 2015-16 season. As a healthcare facility, it is required that any personnel not vaccinated against influenza for the current season wear a surgical procedure mask while in patient areas. This remains in effect until the Health Commissioner declares that influenza is no longer prevalent in New York State. Please be sure to notify your supervisor if you have any questions or concerns.

It’s not too late to get vaccinated. For more information, contact Director of Occupational Health & Wellness, Chris Costello, at 845-333-2070 or [email protected].

300 Applicants Interviewed for 27 Medical Residency Positions

Orange Regional’s Medical Residency Program continues to expand by leaps and bounds. This year, we received 600 applications for our programs and interviewed 300 for 27 available spots.

The relationship cultivated by Orange Regional and Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine has yielded positive results in attracting medical students to the area and availing them to the residencies that Orange Regional offers.

Our proximity to Touro College makes us the closest Academic Teaching Center for Osteopathic students in this area. Our location facilitates a relationship with the college that behooves our residents by having Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine lectures accessible to them at the college every month. Orange Regional also has access to their library resources and their cadaver labs and simulation labs.

Touro opened its Middletown campus in 2014 at the former Horton Hospital building, and admits nearly 300 students each year. The college also offers a program in interdisciplinary biological and physical sciences.

In addition to our medical student programs, Orange Regional inaugurated its first residency in Family Medicine in 2014 as well, welcoming its first two residents – one from Chester and the other from Long Island – who began their three-year residency.

A medical residency is a stage of graduate medical training or education. A resident is a physician who practices medicine usually in a hospital or clinic under the direct or indirect supervision of an attending physician.

Four additional residencies have been added including Emergency Medicine, Psychology, a traditional rotating internship (1 year) and Internal Medicine.

Orange Regional strives to be unlike every other residency program. We remain open to new ideas and new ways of doing things. The Graduate Medical Education at Orange Regional should not be separated by specialties at all times. For example, all residents can attend any lecture in any program that they wish to. This sets us apart from some residency programs that like to keep their programs separate.

While our residency programs are compartmental, it is our practice to encourage all our residents to interact with one another. For more information about the Residency Program, please contact Administrative Director of Medical Education, Jenny Vosganian-Clancy, at 333-1138 or [email protected].

Quilt Donation to NICU

Connections February 2016

Local resident Rose Trinka has been donating handmade quilts to our NICU since this summer. She do-nated over 50 quilts in September and 20 quilts with little stockings around the holidays. Rose attaches a nice card and tag to each hand-made quilt. Thank you so much for your kind donations, Rose! For more information on how to make a donation to Orange Regional Medical Center or Orange Regional Medical Center Foundation’s The Future is Orange Capital Campaign, call the Foundation at 333-2223 or visit www.ormc.org/foundation.

ThankYou
