WINTER 2012 – 2013

f rom the president

As this message is being written, the City is still reeling from the storm. Lights are out in half of Manhattan, most of the boroughs and Long Island. People are without running water and telephone service. The subways are just beginning to run and there are long lines for busses for those who can manage to get to one.

Many people have lost their homes through flood or downed trees. Some people have lost loved ones. Losses are inestimable.

Our thoughts are with all those who have suffered loss, and in particular our members who are so dear to us.

During the storm, we tried, as best we could, to care for our members. As soon as our executive staff could get to the Club, and as soon as our Internet was functioning, we canceled events, notified those who were planning to attend and started to reschedule. We emailed all our members to let them know what services we had available and that we were there for them.

We offered hot showers and hot meals. We filled up the overnight accommodations with members and continued to offer meals in the Grill for those members who were staying at the Club or who could make it to the clubhouse. We are grateful for the dedication of Jennifer Shaw , our Executive Director, in keeping the Club afloat during this crisis. We also are grateful for the help provided by Larry Hines and his staff.

The Columbia Club of New York, your club, continues to function as your home away from home, an extension of your businesses, a place to find a warm welcome on a cold day, a place to bring your family and your clients. We are here to serve you.

I want to assure all of you that your membership is important to us, and we will continue to do everything we can to provide the benefits you deserve.

Warmest regards from midtown,

Mark Lemle Amsterdam ’66 CC, ’69 LawPresidentColumbia University Club of New York

Increasingly, parents are able to protect their unborn children from potential life-threatening diseases, or give birth to children that are chosen for specific genetic qualities. Infertilitytreatments are pushing back the ageat which women can give birth, andnovel surrogacy arrangements havegiven some women (and men) the opportunity to have others beartheir children. how will private firmsrespond to the market opportunitiesthat reproductive science now offers?and how will firms deal with theregulatory and moral challenges thatwill undoubtedly accompany thescientific advance?
