Give your children opportunities to practice

counting as you combine math, movement and

music. Play music that has a bouncy steady beat

and encourage the children to march to the beat

of the music as you call out directions. Try: “Pat

your head 5 times”, Jog in place 10 times”, “Tap

count out loud with you as they follow your direc-

The Amazing Infant Brain-

Infants are born wired to use all of their senses. The experiences they have in early infancy and throughout their childhood help to develop these senses. Here are some amazing facts about infants’ senses. Because touch is so crucial the brain can process tactile sensations by the fourth month of gestation. At birth, this sense is so developed that the infant will have a prefer-ence of soft over rough textures. Sight is the slowest sense to develop. At first the world is fuzzy. By 3 months though, an infant can follow moving objects. Babies have an acute sense of taste that first develops around seven weeks’ gestation. The specific tastes that the child likes are influenced by what the mother eats during pregnancy. By 28 weeks gestation, a baby can perceive loud noises. Newborns prefer their mothers’ voices and they have the ability to perceive every pho-neme in every language. This ability is lost within the first year. The sense of smell also appears to develop in the womb. Babies will show a preference for their mothers’ scents over others.

Babies’ brains are amazing! Think about how you can help with making those neural connections with the babies in your care.

Diaper Changing The diaper changing surface is one of the most contaminated surfaces in a childcare classroom. It is comparable to a toilet in the bathroom. Proper diaper changing procedures and disinfecting are ex-tremely important on this highly contaminated surface. There should be a designated area for diaper changing that has a hand sink either next to it or close by. The hand sink should be used for washing caregiver hands and/or children’s hands that are in-volved with the diaper changing process. Bottles, cups, and dishes should never be placed in this sink. The diapering surface must be smooth and intact with a non-absorbent surface. Don’t store anything on the diaper changing surface. That means no boxes of wipes, gloves, diapers or toys. It may not be used as a work surface. The only items allowed are the supplies you need at the time you are go-ing to change a child. The diaper changing surface should be cleaned first, with soapy water, wiped dry and then disin-fected with bleach water. (1 tablespoon bleach/quart of water) Make sure the bottle is labeled and stored out of reach of children. Proper diaper changing procedures: 1. Gather supplies before placing child on diapering surface. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. 2. Remove child’s clothing and put on gloves. If clothing is soiled put gloves on first. Place any soiled clothing in a plastic bag. 3. Unfasten the diaper and leave soiled diaper under the child. Lift the child’s legs and clean from front to back using a disposable wipe. 4. Place the used wipe in the dirty diaper. Remove soiled diaper by folding it inward and place it in a covered, foot operated, plastic lined trash can. Remove gloves. 5. Wipe your hands with a disposable wipe and then wipe the child’s hands with a fresh wipe. 6. Slide a clean diaper under child. Apply any ointments provided by parents upon their written request. 7. Fasten diaper and redress child. 8. Wash child’s hands at the sink with soap and water. If the baby is unable to support their head, clean the child’s hands with a disposable wipe. Return child to a supervised area. 9. Spray entire diapering surface with soapy water and wipe clean, using disposable paper towels. 10. Spray entire surface with an approved disinfecting solution and allow to remain on surface for a minimum of two minutes to air dry. 11. Wash your hands following proper hand washing procedures even if disposable gloves are used. Make sure that there are diaper changing posters and hand washing signs posted at the diaper changing area. If you need any posters or signs please contact Joyce Reynolds RN, BSN @ 918-831-7245

Cambiando los Paneles

La mesa donde cambiar pañales es una de las superficies más contaminadas en una clase de cui-dado de niños. Es comparable a un inodoro en el baño. Helping Your Child Cope with an Emergency

World events are always a concern for parents. Here are some tips on how you can help your chil-

dren cope with such emotions:

Maintain your routine. Routines are very important to children. Keeping a regular schedule espe-

cially when the world around them seems confusing or unpredictable, gives them a sense of reas-

surance that they are safe. Make sure children get appropriate sleep, exercise, and nutrition. Chil-

dren may find it difficult to accept routines and limits but continue by being firm, calm, and suppor-

tive.

Avoid overexposure to media. Make sure children are not overexposed to news media. Media can

be graphic and if children are watching television they are more likely to feel afraid and confused

with the images. Children also don’t have the understanding of time and space yet and may assume

that what they are seeing on the television is close to home and may become scared that a disaster

will hit in their neighborhood.

Answer their questions. Children fear most when they don’t understand what is happening around

them. Make sure when you are answering your children’s questions you are calm and respond at

their developmental level. Preschooler’s thinking is concrete and egocentric so keep the answers

simple and only to what they need to know. School-age children can be given a more scientific ap-

proach such as explaining to them how tsunamis are formed.

Get children involved in the effort. Let your child participate in a charitable function or initiative.

This will show children how people around the world are working together to the relief of to those in

need. Ask the children what they would like to do. They can send clothes, food or even write letters

or email to those in need. There are several charities that they could donate to such as the Global

Updating Your Child Care Program…

After the tornadoes in Moore, the R&R office of OKC called the providers there to see if

they were ok, damaged or clear out of business. They then arranged to have Save the

Children help get the providers up and running again, or to temporarily house children

displaced by the storms in other facilities. Without current off-site contact information,

this would not have been possible.

“I don't have any changes” “ I don't need any children” “I’m too busy”. Perhaps you have

had these thoughts? Child Care Resource Center fully understands your busy life and the

many demands you have on your time. When it is time to update your program, we first

contact you via email to try to reduce the impact on your day. Then we will try to contact

you via fax or phone.

We need to update your program at least every six months, whether you have had

changes, or need children. Often we can let you know of upcoming trainings, or help you

with resources you may not have. We are always ready to help you with whatever you

need. If our hours do not suit your needs, that also can be worked around, just give us a

Do you like "free" Trainings from CCRC?

We like to provide them to you as well! However, just as your time is valuable to you,

so is the time of our CCRC staff. Our trainers spend many hours developing, prepar-

ing and making materials for each of the "free" trainings that CCRC offers. Due to an

increase in people cancelling at short notice and "no shows" and in an effort to con-

tinue to offer free trainings through the Child Care Resource Center, we are estab-

lishing some rules for our "free" trainings:

1. You may no longer sign-up on the day of the training

2. Drop-ins will not be accepted at trainings

3. You must call immediately to cancel as soon as you know that you will not be at-

tending

4. If less than ten people sign up for a training, the class will be cancelled, you will

be notified.

5. You will receive a reminder call the week of the training. Please confirm your at-

tendance or your name will be removed.

We hope that in the future we will not have to start charging for our trainings. We ap-

preciate your consideration of our trainers' time and our ability to offer

free trainings to the communities that we serve.

El Asombroso Cerebro Infantil

Los bebés nacen con la capacidad para utilizar todos de

sus sentidos. Las experiencias que tienen en la infancia

temprana ayudan a los desarrollan. Aquí están algunos

hechos sorprendentes sobre los sentidos de los bebés.

Porque es tan crucial, el cerebro puede procesar sen-

Fun with Food? Let’s get real. There are a million and two recipes for “Fun with food” toddler style, the cute sand-wiches cut into shapes, pictures made with food artfully arranged on plates to tempt Little palates to eat, but as you are caring for those toddlers, who has time to do all that? Some suggestions instead would be perhaps things the children WILL eat that they can feed themselves and don’t take a full time chef to prepare! Why not try some of these ideas?

Meatloaf portioned into mini-muffin tins. It cooks faster and kids can pop it a bite at a time. Quiche also in these same mini-muffins tins, same idea. Push a Popsicle stick into the top of a yogurt cup, freeze and voila! Frozen yogurt on a stick Prepared pie dough can make easy empanadas. Cut dough into 4 inch circles, place a spoonful

of your favorite filling, fold and bake. A great snack is apple slices with a dab of nut butter; if peanut allergies are a problem; other but-

ters are available, cashew or almond for example.

Try some of these ideas and have fun in the kitchen!

Hay recetas 1,000002 millones para "Diversión con comida" estilo del niño lindos sándwiches cortadas en for-mas, cuadros hechos con alimentos ingen-iosamente dispuestos en placas para tentar a los paladares poco para comer, pero como usted está cuidando a los niños, ¿quién tiene tiempo para hacer todo eso? Algunas sugerencias en cambio sería tal vez los niños comerán que pueden alimen-tarse por sí mismos y no tomar un cocinero de tiempo completo para preparar las co-sas! ¿Por qué no probar algunas de estas ideas?
