Golf News & UpdatesNovember 11 • Veterans Day TournamentTournament will benefit the Arkansas State Veterans Home in Fayetteville. Last year we raised over $7,700. Help us to meet this year’s goal of $9,000+. Country Club & Kingswood golf courses • Format: The Lone Soldier (designation rotates throughout round). Entry Fee: $240 per team ($60 per player) plus applicable green/cart fees. Included in entry fee - Team Emergency Ration Package. Package includes: 1 Per Player – One Mulligan; Automatic one putt once you are on the green; Move up one tee box; and an automatic relief from hazards, bunker or water. Flighting will be determined following play.
Frost Delays: (Daily info is available at 7am • (479) 855-5123)5 Things Every Golfer Should KnowWhile much of the U.S. deals with winter’s brunt, golfers in the Sun Belt and other mild parts of the country are still playing. However, cool, crisp mornings bring the risk of frost delays. At some golf courses frost delays are rare, while at others they may be a regular occurrence. How often your morning round is affected by frost depends on the weather and a variety of other factors. Here are five things every golfer should know about frost delays:
1. Crunchy grass is vulnerable to damage.Golf course turf is normally resilient to traffic, but when ice crystals form inside the plants, they become brittle and vulnerable to damage. Walking or driving over frost-covered grass may rupture plant cells, leading to dead turf. Or the plants may be weakened without immediately showing the effects. It can take grass more than a month to recover from this damage.
2. When it comes to frost delays, location is everything.Many of us have looked out our windows at home and seen no signs of frost, only to find a frost delay when we reach the golf course. This is because frost can linger in colder microclimates long after other areas have thawed. North-facing slopes, low-lying areas and areas sheltered from the wind are especially likely to remain covered with frost. If you are worried about a potential frost delay it is best to call the golf shop to check on conditions at the course before leaving home.
3. Closely mowed turf is at high risk.Frost damage can occur on any part of the golf course, but it poses the greatest risk to closely mown turf. Putting greens are particularly vulnerable because they experience the most concentrated traffic. A foursome typically takes 300 steps or more on each putting green; if there is frost present, all those steps could cause serious damage.
4. A little frost can cause big delays.No signs of frost on the first tee? That doesn’t mean you will get the “all clear” sign. If frost remains in areas that are unavoidable early in the round, the course must remain closed. It is also important to remember that once the frost is totally clear, the maintenance staff will need time to catch up on course preparations before play can begin.
5. More light goes a long way.Shade extends frost delays by preventing sunlight from melting the frost. Pruning or removing trees that shade primary playing surfaces can improve the course’s overall health and reduce the duration of frost delays. This is especially true on holes played early in the round. The shade from a few trees can keep an entire course closed.

New home owners and renters in the past 6-9 months are invited to join us. This will be an opportunity for you to introduce yourselves and to meet other new residents of Bella Vista and learn about the amenities. Sporting News & UpdatesBasic Pistol ClassThis course is designed with beginners in mind and will teach the fundamental skills and knowledge necessary for responsibly owning and operating a pistol. Participants will learn about gun safety, pistol parts and operation, ammunition types and will lay the foundations for safe and accurate shooting. Concealed Carry ClassConcealed carry courses are four hours of classroom time followed immediately by a live fire qualification at the pistol range. The course is designed for those who have experience with firearms and focuses on the laws and procedures one needs to know to apply for a concealed carry permit for the state of Arkansas. This course also meets the requirements for persons that need to renew a permit with the state or transfer a permit from another state. Arkansas Enhanced Concealed Carry ClassReintroduces students to the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for owning and using a handgun for personal protection. Address the responsibilities of carrying a handgun in populated and volatile areas. Students will learn how to correctly and responsibly interact with law enforcement and the general public. This course will also teach what to do when confronted with an active shooting situation and Arkansas Laws pertaining to carrying a concealed handgun. Lake Ann DrawdownThe drawdown is still scheduled to begin on November 11 and run to March 2, 2020. The lake will be lowered by 6 feet and will likely take until December 1 to complete. Lake users should see no effect. Any questions should be directed to Rick Echols, [email protected] or (479) 855-5068.
Fall Fish SamplingThe fisheries staff will be conducting fall fish sampling using electrofishing, gill nets and hoop nets during the day and night over the next month. Our fall sampling gives us a look at survival of spring spawned fish and allows us to see fish that are difficult to find in the spring. Residents should not be alarmed by bright lights and the sound of a generator at night. Boaters should look for buoys marked “Bella Vista POA” and stay to the center of the lake to avoid getting nets caught in the prop.
Lake Brittany Trout FishingCooler weather and better fishing are just around the corner. Largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, and channel catfish fishing should all show improvement over the next month. Additionally, don’t forget about trout fishing on Lake Brittany. The first stocking will take place in early to mid-November when water temperatures are consistently below about 65°F.

Recreation News & UpdatesChristmas Bazaar – Riordan Hall November 9 The annual Christmas Bazaar at Riordan Hall, scheduled on Saturday, November 9 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. This bazaar is the perfect venue to find that special gift for someone on your list or maybe yourself! Just some of items available include: artwork, homemade soaps and scrubs, homemade fudge, wood crafts, cutting boards, crosses, bird houses, oil paintings, Christmas ornaments, jewelry, doll house furniture, doll clothes, homemade breads, stain glass art, leather items, essential oils, crocheted and knitted items, greeting cards and signed books written by local authors. Tai Chi 6-week Session Tai Chi Form – Advanced – Monday at 6:30 p.m., November 4 through December 9 at Metfield Clubhouse. Tai Chi Form – Advanced is open to all with previous martial arts experience. The level is moderate to difficult. Register at Metfield Clubhouse, 3 Euston Rd., or call (479) 855-8165. Tai Chi Balance – Wednesday at 4:00 p.m., November 6 through December 18 (no class Nov. 27) at Branchwood Recreation Center. Tai Chi Balance is open to all levels and appropriate for seniors with no pressure to memorize form. Tai chi poses and movements for better balance and health will be introduced and practiced. Register at Branchwood, 222 Glasgow Rd., or call (479) 855-8181. A maximum of 32 students will be accepted for either of the above class sessions, while a minimum of 8 students is required. Cost to POA members is $54 and guests $65 per 6-week class session. These classes are brought to you by Erik Hardin, L. Winter Hours for Kingsdale Tennis Pro Shop Effective November – February, the Kingsdale Tennis Pro Shop will be open daily from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. unless inclement weather.
Thanksgiving Hours at the REC CentersBranchwood, Metfield and Riordan Hall will be open from 7 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. We will resume normal hours on Friday, November 29.
Kingsdale Tennis Pro Shop: Closed on Thanksgiving Day. Courts open for drop-in play.
