Message from Rabbi Stephen Slater

VIEWING SYNAGOGUE AS SACRED COMMUNITY In the second half of Exodus we experience a dramatic shift from the Exodus out of Egypt to a series of detailed commandments. This shift is very important for understanding what Torah is all about. In parashat Mishpatim (Ex 21:1-24:18), we read an extraordinary scope of laws, ranging from damages, to private property, to the calendar. The implication of this sudden shift of genres from the narrative of the Exodus to legal case law is that the Torah’s task is to combine story and law. The vast majority of the laws are about damages. Why are damages so important to the Torah? Because damage is an inevitable by-product of human community, and knowing how to restore relationship is the key to establishing and sustaining human community.

As if by way of illustration, shortly after the Ten Commandments are given, the people worship false gods. Moses throws down the tablets holding the Divine word and they are broken. God has to commission a replacement set of tablets. Rabbinic tradition teaches if you want to be righteous, study the loss of damages, and so the three tractates of the Talmud (Bava Kamma, Bava Metziah, and Bava Batra) that deal with damages are collectively known (along with other literature) as Sefer Ge’ulah the “tractates of Redemption.” Implicit here is the idea that the laws detailing correct conduct towards others will bring redemption - or at least some of it - right into this world.

The Mishkan, or tabernacle, is at the center of three of the last Parashiyot of Exodus: Terumah (Ex 25:1-27:19), Tetzavah (Ex 27:20-30:10) and Vayakhel (35:1-40:38). They go into detail about the implements of the Tabernacle, its precise architecture, and the exact qualities of those who will build it. Wisdom lies in the nitty-gritty. Holiness is in the details. That is why the Mishkan takes up so much space in the Torah. The Mishkan is the center of the Jewish community. Just as the preceding laws detailing how we are to treat each other are about community; the Mishkan is also about community. Explaining the purpose of the tabernacle, God says, “I will meet you there.” And explaining the purpose of the Exodus, God says, “I brought them out of Egypt in order that I might dwell among them.” (Exodus 29:43, 46)

The message of the Exodus is that God wants to be your neighbor. And it turns out that living in God’s neighborhood has some serious requirements. Among them are personal character, piety and precise conduct. Living in community with God does not require perfect action, but rather the ability to repair damages and take others into account, as well as a deep commitment to staying together. Moses demonstrates this when he refuses to allow God to destroy his people and make another one from Moses’ descendants. And God demonstrates this when he expresses his innermost characteristics as being patient, kind and forgiving, and does not allow the pain of being snubbed for an idol keep him from forgiving the people. In this time of politics of anger, driven by the need to see one’s preferred vision realized immediately in the political sphere (even at the cost of humiliating one’s enemies), we need now, more than ever, to practice these godly traits.

Community is not so much about being right as it is about getting right with those around us. And the Torah is not so much about politics as it is about community. There's never been a better time to recommit ourselves to the priorities of Torah by investing ourselves in our communities. May we have the wisdom to dedicate ourselves to community. May we have the faith in God that it takes to be patient. May we have the kindness to forgive those who do harm. God bless this community.

—Rabbi Stephen

WE MEAN IT: FAMILY FRIENDLY MEANS KIDS ARE WELCOME! Over the past few months we have taken several steps to help make our synagogue family friendly—a place where kids are welcome and parents feel supported in raising their children Jewishly.

Kimerling Chapel and Sanctuary Quiet Play Spaces: TBE has recently made a place for infants and tod-dlers and their parents to sit in both the Kimerling Chapel and the main sanctuary. We have buckets of toys and books to engage their attention, stuffed Torahs for joining the Torah procession and, best of all, loving parents and grandparents, uncles and aunties who will welcome the joyful noise of chil-dren in the services. So come to Shul Tots every single shabbas.

We also continue to have a fun Tot Shabbat every month, where kids and parents enjoy Torah sto-ries, singing, special holiday and “yoga” experiences. Sarah Metzger , Shira Goldberg and Bethany Slater sing, dance and tell stories to our toddlers starting at 11 am. Check out the Tot Shabbat Monthly Special schedule found at the TBE entryway tables for upcoming monthly themes.

Every Shabbat morning starting at 9:30 am there is a safe place to leave an infant to play or nap while parents enjoy some adult time. TBE has a fabulous playroom for infants and toddlers on the ground level staffed by an experienced childcare work, Shahana Salam. It is great to be able to drop off the little ones and find a few minutes of quiet in prayer on Saturday.

We have more in the works to continue making Temple Beth-El a learning space for your children. Whether you are a parent, a grandparent or an adult who simply loves our kids, we all benefit when families are welcome in our synagogue.

SOCK AND UNDERWEAR DRIVE CONCLUDES THIS MONTH

UPCOMING IN APRIL: POVERTY SIMULATION April 7 at Temple Beth-El (Time to be determined)

This event is open to the whole community. We’ll be joined by Temple Emanu-El’s Religious School students ages 13 and up. The simulation will last roughly 3.5 hours. Contact Dani Kahn-Krell with questions at [email protected].

Here is a little about the program, as described by Greater Birmingham Ministries on www.gbm.org: “Human dignity and raising awareness about people living in poverty can be more fully explored as Greater Birmingham Ministries offers ‘Trading Places: A Poverty Simulation.’ Aimed at helping the community dive more deeply into understanding the experience of living in poverty, this simulation takes participants through unique exercises and tasks to provide food, shelter and other basic necessities during the course of a simulated month. It can help break down stereotypes and can leave a lasting impression as participants step into the real-life shoes of families living in poverty.”

THANK YOU! I thought to myself, I need to send each and every person who participated in this year’s Men’s Club Super Bowl Fundraiser a thank you note and then … it came to me! I will use this month’s Men’s Club article as a platform and create the largest Thank You Note POSSIBLE!

February 3 was an EPIC day for Men's Club! At the World Wide Wrap, we gave all of our fifth-graders their t’fillin from Israel and we were able to watch students and their families enjoy a special moment together. Then we had the Super Bowl Breakfast following that presentation. We held the Super Bowl Watch Party later that evening. We had such a SUCCESSFUL FUNDRAISER, with so many people participating and Men’s Club was able to give $1,000 in vouchers to be spent ONLY at our Temple toward the Sisterhood Gift Shop, Sisterhood Bake Sale or Shabbat Ruach dinners. It REALLY was one of the most special days for Men’s Club in my four years as President of Men’s Club!

I would like to give a special thanks to Steve Altmann and his committee for being my partners in crime, and Howard Kaplan for bringing this idea to our Men’s Club and helping guide us through such a successful fundraiser. It really would not have been possible without you guys and the support from our WONDERFUL Temple staff, Lindsey, Haley and Pam. Also, wanted to thank Mary and David Kimerling for hosting a memorable Super Bowl Watch Party! THANK YOU, all!

Lastly, March is our March Madness Membership Drive. So, PLEASE be looking out for emails or just go to the Temple’s website and find the link to JOIN MEN'S CLUB. It is only $36! We have a BLAST and do a lot of great things for our Temple, our Religious School and our community!

NEW PARENTS AS JEWISH TEACHERS PROGRAM UNVEILED Dear Families, I am so happy to share with you a special program designed to help your student prepare for a meaningful bar or bat mitzvah. The “Parents as Jewish Teachers” program is being supported throughout our Birmingham Jewish community by the Birmingham Jewish Foundation and is open to everyone, regardless of affiliation or membership. After years of tutoring students in preparation for their bar and bat mitzvah, I have found that the key ingredients are challenging material, 1:1 time with a tutor, and 1:1 preparation time with a parent. In order to help all this happen for your children, I am inviting your family to participate in the “Parents as Jewish Teachers” program over the next 18 months. The concept is simple: Parents are an integral part of the preparation process for every bar and bat mitzvah student. No matter how much we Jewish leaders do, we cannot replace the importance of a parent in the development of a child’s Jewish learning. I know that many parents don’t feel personally capable of bringing high quality Judaic and Hebrew instruction to their own students. The materials I am suggesting are also not cheap, around $100 for a set of three books. That’s why I went to the Birmingham Jewish Foundation, in order to help you with the selection of material and support of your in-home instruction. What you need to do is just:

a) see that your child does the Hebrew homework, 3 times/week. b) together with your child, read and discuss either the JPS Children’s Bible or the You Be the Judge. We will be sending you regular emails in order to suggest teaching questions and prompting you

to keep moving through the material. The only thing that you need to do in order to get these materials for free is commit to using them with your child each week. Please visit the Temple Beth-El website, www.templebeth-el.net, to sign up. “Parents as Jewish Teachers” is listed under the “Education” tab on the website. If you are not sure that you can commit, no problem. You can purchase these materials from our Temple. But please leave the subsidized materials for the families who commit to using them every week with their children. Yours, Rabbi Stephen

Time sure flies when you are having fun. It seems like last week, instead of last June, that I became your Temple president. Suffice to say, we definitely have had an eventful nine months.

We are now three months away from our annual congregational meeting, slated for June 2. With that looming ahead, I tapped VPs Ronald Levitt and Naomi Ivker to co-chair the bylaws committee. By late April, the six-member committee should have some recommendations for us to consider. The last time we amended our bylaws was June 2014.

Like other nonprofits, TBE relies on willing, enthusiastic volunteers to get important work done. It truly does take a village to run our Temple. As always, we look to all of you for new ideas, energy, commitment and help. The bylaws empowers immediate past president Jacob Halpern to chair the Nominating Committee. By the time you received your March 2019 TBE bulletin, he and I will have appointed a diverse group of congregants to this committee.

If you know an active TBE congregant who would make a great addition to our Board of Directors, please email suggestions to [email protected] or text me at 205-383-9579.

In other news, the LJCC is rescheduling its Jewish Food Festival and Kosher BBQ contest. While the new date is not yet settled upon, we know it is no longer on Sunday, May 5. Knowing what this event means to the LJCC and our broader Jewish community, we at TBE will continue to promote and support it.

In the meantime, save the weekend of May 17-18 on your planning calendars. That weekend, we at TBE will honor volunteers who have made a difference in our community. We are fortunate that many of you give your time generously in the name of tikkun olam.

In closing, I again thank you for supporting our spiritual home, Temple Beth-El. You’re welcome to call me during normal business hours or email me at [email protected] if you have a shul-related question or comment.

BOARD UPDATES AND MORE

‘HANNAH ARENDT AND THE BANALITY OF EVIL’ STUDY ON MARCH 2 1-1:45 pm, March 2, Temple Beth-El

Study presented by TBE congregant, Dr. Lidia Romero-Sánchez. We will discuss the more

controversial aspects of Arendt’s philosophy from “The Origins of Totalitarianism” and “Eichmann in

Jerusalem”. Arendt is one of the most relevant political philosophers of the twentieth century.

She studied the process of hatred against the European Jewish population and how totalitarianism

was formed, of which she herself experienced.

Thanks! We look forward to you joining us!

—Lidia Romero-Sánchez, Ph.D.
