by Megan MonteroIn Feng Shui, my concern is

how a persons environment affects their health, prosperity and relation-ships. I look for things that can be changed to initiate the balance my clients are looking for. Often I find that to much clutter is the main issue disrupting their harmony. Other Feng Shui adjustments will be minimally effective until the space is decluttered and organized. Years of seeing the positive life-changing results of clear-ing clutter, inspired me to become a Home Organizer so I could better help my clients. Although my previous ap-proach was effective, I’m finding that using the KonMari Method, developed by Marie Kondo, has taken the results to a whole new level.

One of the hallmarks of the KonMari method is to focus on what you want to keep, instead of what you want to let go of. The criteria for what to keep is holding each object and asking the question, “does this spark joy?”, then letting go of what doesn’t. Another crucial difference is decluttering one category at a time by taking everything in that category out of it’s various storage places and going through all of it at once. Even if you don’t have an overwhelming amount of stuff, you can still benefit.

When I did this myself, I dis-covered that two of my ”wear at home” sweaters, that had previously made

the decluttering cut many times, did not actually spark joy. One of them I really liked many years ago but now it was worn out and I noticed I felt down when I wore it. The other sweater was very nice and in great shape but I realized I never liked how it looked on me but had kept it because it was a “nice” sweater and still functional for warmth. I now discovered that when I wore it, it lowered my energy instead of uplifting it-the opposite of “spark-ing joy”. Another sweater that sparks a lot of joy, I almost never wore because I was too busy wearing the other two! Now every morning in the winter I wear the sweater that sparks joy and I feel cozy, happy and warm.

A positive side effect of this method is that intensively going through this process of asking if our belongings spark joy, builds our deci-sion making muscle. I find it easier to make decisions about other things and have noticed a clearer doorway to my heart voice. I have a better sense of what sparks joy and what doesn’t in other areas of my life. When you ap-ply this method to your whole house, you radically change your mindset in a positive way, which is one reason it is so effective.

You can learn more about this method in Marie Kondo’s best-selling book, The Life-Changing Magic of Ti-dying Up. If you want help taking the plunge, I would be happy to guide you

through this transformative process of discovering more joy in your life. For Feng Shui and Organizing advice tailored to your specific situation contact Megan at (831) 588-5424 or [email protected]. How worried should drug com-panies be about supplements eating into their monopoly

pro ts? A lot—as this story will show. Please share it with anyone you know who is suffering from Alzheimer’s or is worried about it.

Of course, just about everyone worries about Alzheimer’s. It currently

af icts 5.2 million people in the US and is the seventh leading cause of death. The cost of treating it is esti-mated at $148 billion.

Mary Newport, MD, has been medical director of the neonatal intensive care unit at Spring Hill Regional Hospital in Florida since it opened in 2003. About the same time

the unit opened, her husband Steve, then 53, began showing signs of pro-gressive dementia, later diagnosed as Alzheimer’s Disease. “Many days, often for several days in a row, he was in a fog; couldn’t nd a spoon or remember how to get water out of the refrigerator,” she said.

They started him on Alzheimer’s drugs—Aricept, Namenda, Exelon—but, his disease worsened steadily. (It should be noted that the latest research shows that the various Alzheimer’s drugs, like Aricept, have proven dis-appointing, with little real bene t and often distressing side effects.) When Dr. Newport couldn’t get her husband into a drug trial for a new Alzheimer’s medication, she started researching the mechanism behind Alzheimer’s.

She discovered that with Al-zheimer’s disease, certain brain cells may have dif culty utilizing glucose (made from the carbohydrates we eat), the brain’s principal source of energy. Without fuel, these precious neurons may begin to die. There is an alterna-tive energy source for brain cells—fats known as ketones. If deprived of car-bohydrates, the body produces ketones naturally.

But, this is the hard way to do it—who wants to cut carbohydrates out of the diet completely? Another way to

produce ketones is by consuming oils that have medium-chain triglycerides. When MCT oil is digested, the liver converts it into ketones. In the rst few weeks of life, ketones provide about 25 percent of the energy newborn babies need to survive.

Dr. Newport learned that the ingredient in the drug trial which was showing so much promise was simply MCT oil derived from coconut oil or palm kernel oil, and that a dose of 20 grams (about 20 ml or 4 teaspoons) was used to produce these results. When MCT oil is metabolized, the ketones which the body creates may, according to the latest research, not only protect against the incidence of Alzheimer’s, but may actually reverse it. Moreover, this is also a potential treatment for Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, multiple scle-rosis and amyotrophic lateral sclero-sis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease), drug-resistant epilepsy, brittle type I diabetes, and type II (insulin-resistant) diabetes.

So Mr. Newport, not being able to get into the drug trial, started tak-ing the coconut oil twice a day. At this point, he could barely remember how to draw a clock. Two weeks after add-ing coconut oil to his diet, his drawing improved. After 37 days, Steve’s draw-ing gained even more clarity. The oil seemed to “lift the fog,” and in the rst sixty days, Dr. Newport saw remark-able changes in him: every morning he was alert and happy, talkative, making jokes. His gait was “still a little weird,” but his tremor was no longer very noticeable. He was able to concentrate on things that he wanted to do around the house and in the yard and stay on task, whereas before coconut oil, he was easily distractible and rarely accomplished anything unless he was directly supervised.

Over the next year, the dementia continued to reverse itself: he is able to run again, his reading comprehen-sion has improved dramatically, and his short-term memory is improv-

ing—he often brings up events that happened days to weeks earlier and relays telephone conversations with accurate detail. A recent MRI shows that the brain atrophy has been com-pletely halted.

Let’s take a moment to con-sider what actually happened here. Synthetic (patentable) Alzheimer’s drugs have failed. A drug company reluctantly decides to put a non-patent-able natural substance (medium-chain triglycerides derived from coconut or palm) through an FDA trial. It works. But, darn it, a smart doctor gures out that a natural food can be substituted for the super-expensive drug. Not only that, the ketones from natural coconut oil last in the body longer than the drug version—eight hours instead of three hours. This is enough to make a drug company start worrying about its future. What if this natural health idea really catches on? Goodbye to monopoly pro ts!

Coconut oil can be found in many health food stores and even some grocery stores. One large chain sells a non-hydrogenated (no trans-fat) brand of coconut oil in a one-liter size (nearly 32 ounces) for about $7. It can be purchased in quantities as small as a pint and up to ve gallons online. It is important to use coconut oil that is non-hydrogenated and contains no trans-fat. We would also strongly encourage the use of virgin oil (chemicals used to extract non-virgin oil are potentially dangerous, and better still, virgin organic, still quite reasonably priced.)

Sadly, you will not nd any infor-mation on ketones, or the use of coco-nut oil or MCT oil, on the Alzheimer’s Association website.

Coconut oil is not the only natural product that has the potential to turn Alzheimer’s around. We will cover some other ones, and drug industry efforts to steal some of them, in a future issue.

Kim Tunilla, B.S., C.D.C. • (831) [email protected]

She walked out of that doctor’s of ce and never went back. “Everything changed from that mo-ment,” she recalls. “I slowly decreased all the other diabetes medicines I was on. I lowered my blood cholesterol without drugs. I lowered my blood pressure without drugs. I corrected my hormonal problems without drugs. Many diabetics go blind, but I reversed the nerve damage in my eyes. And that infection in my leg? It completely healed. The arthritis in my feet? It went away.”

Today, Natala Constantine has lost almost 200 pounds, is medicine-free, and continues to make great strides toward her ideal weight. Her diabetes is in complete remission. I’ve met her and I can attest that she is one of the happiest and most radiant people you could hope to meet. A concert violinist, she exudes joy.

And her husband, Matt? While Natala was dealing with diabetes, he was not only obese but also suffered

from severe food allergies. Eating a few tomatoes would send him to the emergency room. His food aller-gies dominated his life. And now? His improvement, on a 100-percent healthy plant-strong diet, is almost as miraculous as his wife’s. A concert pianist, he has lost 90 pounds, is now a healthy weight, and his food allergies are entirely behind him.

It’s quite a world we live in it, isn’t it? On the one hand, we have the Heart Attack Grill, whose 570-pound spokesman died this month at the age of 29. On the other, we have people like Natala and Matt Constantine, who have taken a different path.

We live in a society that tends to cruelly stigmatize the obese. The Heart Attack Grill represents one form of response. It can feel empowering to turn shame into de ance. When society points its nger at you, blaming you and denying its own illness, there is a natural urge to send a message back to society with your middle nger.

But is there a healthier alterna-tive? Is it possible to make a com-mitment to greater wellbeing and happiness? What about refusing to in-ternalize society’s negative messages, and instead building a healthy life of joy, con dence, and beauty?

Cutting back on heavily sweet-ened beverages like sodas and juice-like drinks is a good place to start. Eating less processed foods and more whole foods is another good step. Getting exercise helps a lot. And the more of your nutrients you can get from plant sources, the better.

Eat a healthy plant-strong diet, and your body will thank you for the rest of your life.

poor vision. There’s a real feeling of anxiety and insecurity around batteries running down and the logistics of changing them.” The Grippa allows for easy pick-up of batteries us-ing either a simple tweezer action or a magnet—whichever works best for you—and you can store up to 4 spare batter-ies securely in the handle. So no more fumbling with your

hearing aid and no more worry about running down your battery, just carry The Grippa in a purse or a pocket.

With a growing list of easy-to-use gadgets in his workshop, Bert decided to go into production. “I don’t see anything else like The Grippa on the market and it can help so many people,” he says. All of his products are made in the USA, and he tries to use local vendors wherever pos-sible. His company, Specialty International, has recently opened an online store at Smoolis and is now working on marketing The Grippa and his other products to a wider audience. He has plans to sell on Amazon and possibly EBay in the near future. Retirement? “No way!” chuckles Bert, “I’m having too much fun—I like to stay busy.”

From High Tech to Low TechLocally owned company, Specialty International, focuses on what matters to Seniors: convenience, security and peace of mind.

Ex-Silicon Valley engineer and Soquel resident, Bert Wagner, spent 50 years solving problems in the failure analysis electronic industry before turning his attention to solving everyday life inconveniences. His inspiration? Those closest to him, and in particular, his wife Nina. The problem-solver in Bert just could not help but notice how many daily tasks were difficult for seniors—everything from peeling back the foil seal on a medication bottle to chang-ing the tiny batteries of a hearing aid. Bert felt strongly that maintaining independence in these basic everyday actions was important to a general sense of control and well being in life. And so Bert built a machine shop at his home and began designing basic tools to help Nina with tasks that were frustrating her.

First came “The Helping Hand”, an adjustable, rotat-ing stand for Nina to use when hand-painting ceramics. “The plates she was painting were heavy and Nina’s wrists would get fatigued from constantly turning them,” says Bert. The Helping Hand allows her to turn the plate around with ease and to tilt it to a comfortable angle. Now painting for Nina is what it used to be — a complete pleasure. The Helping Hand is designed for artists, craftsmen, and restorers work-ing on heavy objects.

Hard on the heels of The Helping Hand, came “That’s a Wrap”, a designed-for-the-home sturdy aluminum-built dispenser for plastic wrap. “Those cardboard boxes that you buy at the store fall apart and the wrap gets caught and torn. They’re a mess!” laughs Bert. “I designed That’s a Wrap to last forever, to be easy to use, to cut cleanly and easily every time, and to look pretty on your counter in the kitchen! I use mine every day.”

Bert’s latest invention is called “The Grippa”. “It’s a must-have tool for those with hearing aids,” explains Bert, “Changing batteries can be so difficult and frustrating because they are so tiny and hard to hold on to, especially if you suffer from arthritis, mild Parkinson’s Disease, or

Bert Wagner’s wife, Nina, struggled with fatigue in her wrists from constantly turning the ceramic

plates she loves to paint. Bert designed and manufactured The Helping Hand, a heavy-duty, adjustable, rotating stand, which allows her to

continue her work without discomfort.

(Meyers Cocktail ~ A wonderful IV of Vit C, Vit B’s, Magnesium & Calcium)

Dr. Baker, please tell us something about your practice and back-ground:

I am a holistic Family Physi-cian. I grew up in the Chicago area. I was fascinated by biology and earned a degree in Biology from Stanford University. I attended the University of Michigan School of Medicine, where I also completed my residency in Family Practice. After completing my medical training, I could have moved anywhere and chose the Santa Cruz area as the ideal place to settle.

I started my practice, the Pacific Center for Integral Health in Soquel in 1988. I then completed a four year postgraduate program at the Hahne-mann College of Homeopathy. I am a founding diplomate of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medi-cine.Do you have a particular focus in your practice?

As a Family doctor I am quali-fied to treat everyone from newborns to the elderly, but I seem to attract people who are chronically ill and have been to many other doctors who either can not find the cause of their problems or can find the problem but don’t have effective treatments to offer. I thus see many patients with problems, like chronic fatigue, chronic pain, food and

chemical sensitivities, gastrointestinal disorders and autoimmune conditions. But I also see many people who are in good general health, who are inter-ested in maintaining optimal health and preventing disease.

Of course it is easier to prevent illness than wait until one is ill and then treat. What modalities do you utilize?

I utilize virtually every healing modality to various degrees, but there is a method to how I use them. When I work with patients I focus on three main areas.

The first, is identifying the underlying causes of illness. These causes are many and varied, but basi-cally all health problems are caused by the interplay of stress and our genetics. Stress includes both emotional stress and physiological stressors. Com-mon physiological stressors include environmental toxins (heavy metals, molds, pesticides etc.), microbes and electromagnetic fields.

While removing such stressors as much as possible is essential to health, it is also necessary to provide the body with optimal nutrition via diet and supplements. The tricky part is that one person may need a lot more of a given nutrient than another person, so it is important to determine individual

needs. Also, it is important to give nu-trients that each individual can digest, absorb and transport to the parts of our bodies that need them.

Even if one removes stressors and provides optimal nutrition, people often will not heal from chronic prob-lems unless the energetic component of health is addressed. Our bodies are not just physical and chemical mechanisms; there is a flow of energy that moves throughout our bodies. In chronic health problems that energy flow is disrupted.

Modalities that balance body energetics such as homeopathy, Chi-nese medicine or Ayurvedic medicine are usually essential parts of a com-

prehensive healing process. Within the realm of Energy Medicine, I specialize in Classical Homeopathy, which is my favorite of all healing modalities. I have seen homeopathy cure many conditions considered incurable by conventional medicine.

When all of these aspects are addressed, even the most intractable and serious health problems can be healed (though it should also be noted that sometimes no matter what we do, some conditions will not be healed; I believe fate/karma is also a significant factor in our lives and health).Have you found any conditions to be especially prevalent in the Santa Cruz area?

Chronic Lyme disease with co-infections like Babesia and Bartonella is very common in our community. It can cause almost any set of symptoms, but the most common symptoms are fatigue, aches and pains that move around and a variety of neurological symptoms like poor memory and concentration, as well as, anxiety and depression. Most who have it do not know it, as most doctors do not know how to recognize and diagnose it.

Another common issue is symptoms related to mold exposure, which can again manifest with a wide variety of symptoms and, again, many with mold toxicity are unaware they have been exposed. How is a visit with you different, than a visit with a conventional doctor?

One of the main differences is the amount of time I spend. The aver-age medical visit in the U.S. is 10-20 minutes. I generally spend an hour with patients and up to 3 hours with new patients. I try to get to know my patients in depth, educate them about

health and involve them in treatment decisions. I do offer conventional pharmaceutical treatment when ap-propriate but prefer to use herbs, nutritional supplements, homeopathy and mind-body techniques, as well as diet and lifestyle changes. By trying to understand my patients issues in depth and addressing the underlying causes of their problems. I do my best to help them to heal rather than treat symptoms superficially. You are known in some circles for being Jerry Garcia’s doc-tor. Can you tell us about that?

I was a huge fan of the Grateful Dead and like many, was very con-cerned about Jerry’s health, so it was a dream come true when I met Jerry through mutual friends and became his family doctor in early 1990. I did my very best to help him and we had some great successes, particularly in the summer of 1992 when I helped him

to stop using drugs and stop smoking, and through diet and exercise he lost 60 pounds. Unfortunately, when he resumed touring he fell back into some unhealthy habits. While I wish he was still with us, I’m happy that at the time he died, Jerry was making a sincere effort to become healthy again. The website HealthTap has named you Top Holistic Medical Practitioner in the Nation. Tell us about that.

That is a great honor but prob-ably sounds more impressive than it is. HealthTap is a website where doctors volunteer their time to answer medical questions submitted from people all over the world. Over 75,000 doctors participate. I enjoy helping the patients who submit questions, but other doc-tors can see and comment upon the an-swers. Part of the reason I participate there so much, is to share knowledge with my fellow physicians.

I have been voted Top Holistic Medical Practitioner 7 of the 8 times it has been awarded (the other time I came in second), but this competition is only amongst the doctors who par-ticipate on Health Tap, and there are many superb Holistic Doctors who are not on HealthTap.

I am more honored that my fel-low HealthTap physicians have voted me as the leading expert amongst them in the nation on Lyme Disease, Supplements, Vitamin Deficiency, Vitamins D, C and B12, Vegetarian Diet and Herbal Supplements and as the 2nd leading expert in Homeopathy. Anyone can search for my profile on HealthTap to see the thousands of answers I have authored.Tell us about the other practitioners at your center.

I have had the privilege of

working with Cynthia Quattro, a talented Acupuncturist/Doctor of Chinese Medicine as well as Physician Assistant for over 20 years. Cindy is one of the few acupuncturists in our area who specializes in Japanese-style acupuncture, which can be more subtle and refined than the Chinese style.

We also have two skilled RN’s, Caroline Stepovich and Catherine

Harms who administer intra-venous vitamins, minerals and other nutrients such as glutathione. Many patients experience dramatic benefits from IV nutrients.

We also have 2 superb massage thera-pists, Serena Fennell and

Susan Greeninger. A talented Marriage and Family Therapist, Anna Dasbach, also works at our center.

I am very excited that we are on the verge of offering Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, another modality that often yields dramatic benefits. We understand you recently suffered a personal tragedy.

Yes, my dear wife Jody Can-tor, a home school teacher beloved by many in our community, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest caused by an arrhythmia in June of 2013. She was resuscitated after a half hour but suf-fered severe brain damage due to lack of oxygen. She was in a coma for several weeks and never fully recov-ered. She required 24/7 care, which we did mostly at home, but despite the efforts of many fine healers she developed complications and died this past June.

It is hard to explain how incred-ibly difficult and stressful this ordeal was. My family is extremely grateful for the tremendous financial and moral support by a great many people in our community that helped us to care for Jody at home. I am also grateful for the tolerance and understanding of my patients, as my hours were quite limited for those 2 years and I was often quite exhausted.

Being a single parent to my 12 and 15 year-old daughters, while maintaining my practice, is still very challenging, but I now have much more time and energy to devote to caring for my patients. How can people learn more about you and your practice?

I enjoy sharing information on health with as many people as possible. For several years, I wrote a regular column for The Connection (and I hope to resume this). Those old columns can be found at www.drrandy.org, a website that needs some updat-ing but still has useful information. I have a blog with more recent essays at www.drrandybaker.com.

REPLACING LOST TEETH IMMEDIATELYby David L. Biles, D.D.S., M.A.

Once patients decide to re-move unhealthy teeth, the next concern often becomes

what to replace the teeth with, and, I generally give the same answer. We can ultimately replace the teeth with devices that are removable or xed, depending on their preferences and budget, but in the very beginning, I tell my patients that we are going to replace their teeth with a ipper. That’s right, a device we in the profession refer to as a “ ipper” or an immedi-ate temporary partial denture. The name ipper comes presumably from the ease the appliance can be ipped out of the mouth by the tongue when necessary. It has no relationship to the dolphin television star of the 60’s.

So what is a ipper? Gen-erally speaking, a ipper is a removable oral appliance with 1-3 teeth attached to a custom made hard pink acrylic plate that form- ts to the palate or lower dental arch utilizing the contours of the teeth and the arch for retention and stability. Some dentists have them made with metal clasps for retention, though I have managed to locate a small lab that does cus-tom work for me and provides metal free services. Since many of my patients present with signs of metal allergies, having a metal free removable option is paramount in my practice. I am blessed to have such a skilled laboratory technician to service my patients. His name is Stan; he’s an artist and has a wonderful grounded sense of humor. I can always count on Stan; he is, Stan the Man.

Back to the topic—a ipper is usually inserted immediately upon ex-traction of teeth for multiple purposes. It serves as an immediate band-aid by placing direct pressure over the surgi-cal wound site, aiding in healing by stopping the ow of blood, much like what is done in a rst aid situation: direct pressure to the wound. The form of the ipper also helps create and guide the nal tissue contour which helps to assure a nice functional and esthetic bony foundation for later pos-sibilities. Moreover, its presence limits food and other forces from disturbing the healing wound, making healing less disruptive. I particularly like the design that Stan creates for my patients because his meticulous attention to detail enables my patients to securely wear their ippers for weeks without adding dental pastes and adhesives for retention. It takes a little more extra time and plaster to make the ipper retain without pastes, but it is well

worth the bene t in hygiene, healing, and hassle.

One of the biggest concerns many patients have is how their ap-pearance will be altered immediately following the surgery. I tell them to relax; they will never leave the of ce without their smile after their surgical appointment. Moreover, we have spent

years creating pretty smiles with our ippers, and truly do work with an art-ist, Stan, who truly cares about people, which is reflected in his work and timeliness when emergency ippers are needed to quickly help a traumatic situation. Supporting people and labs like Stan’s is why we work with small laboratories: we have the relationship to ask for favors when necessary.

I believe that a well-designed esthetic ipper should provide patients with a con dent smile after the surgery is complete, and that’s what we con-sistently provide. In my of ce, that means that the smile is eye-catching, but does not draw critical scrutiny. In many cases, the smile we provide following surgery is a significant improvement over the one the patient presented with at the beginning of the dental journey.

Speech is generally affected initially, but within 48 hours of use, people adapt and speech returns to nor-mal, though the continual awareness of the appliance with the tongue per-sists awhile longer. Occasionally, the ipper can be thinned to create more

tongue space, but thinning weakens the plate, and should be minimized. Since the ipper may be necessary for an indeterminate amount of time, it is best to take good care of it. My recommendation is that patients put up with the thickness for a week before thinning the support, and then only if intolerable. Keeping ippers wet and cleaning them with a toothbrush and soap and water also helps assure long-term use. If one chooses to not wear it for awhile, I recommend placing the ipper in water with some 3% hy-drogen peroxide. A word to the wise: cover and place the ipper away from pets, as cats and dogs have been known to chew up dental appliances.

Flippers are generally worn a minimum of approximately 10-12

weeks before treatment to pro-vide a more permanent restor-ative option can begin. It takes that long before soft tissue and bone mature enough before it is possible or wise to resume treatment. Flippers can, by the way, last for a long time, given the situation and the care the patient affords the appliance. I have patients who have worn these for years. Plus, I have had patients who wore nothing but ippers for decades as it t best into their lifestyle, budget, and health concerns.

The pink material in most removable appliances is acrylic and is colored by the heavy metal, cadmium. Cadmium free acrylics are available, and our

choice of materials for our patients. Teeth are acrylic and porcelain, though porcelain teeth are a bit more costly. Setting and adjusting porcelain teeth is more challenging and time consuming, with little esthetic gain, so I generally stay with the acrylic teeth. Besides, the acrylic teeth bond to the plate, whereas the porcelain ones must be mechani-cally retained. In a situation where I need to thin the tooth for clearance by opposing teeth, porcelain teeth can fracture. Stick with the acrylic teeth.

I hope that by knowing more about ippers, the journey beyond ex-traction becomes less threatening, less fearful. Remember, you can have your smile the day your teeth are extracted. How much better can it get, given the circumstances? Happy trails….

BECAUSE IT IS...by David L. Biles, D.D.S., M.A.

Inever thought that I would con-tinue to learn as much as I do after so many years in practice as

a dentist. As a matter of fact, one of my early concerns was that dentistry wouldn’t offer as much stimulation as I thought I might need to be suf- ciently interested in my daily toils, decades into my career. I could not have been more surprised as time has unfolded. Treating the trusting and grateful patients I do enables me to better understand how this oral system operates in health and disease and still keeps my daily interest. Each day I hear tales that astound me, challenging my understanding of the mechanisms of disease and dysfunction. I routinely hear from patients of brain fog clearing, whole body pain di-minishing, and energy increas-ing. Sometimes the reports are even more remarkable.

Recently, for example, a woman returned with her sister for a second opinion and examination, determined to help her sibling with her health concerns, touching all of the bases on possible solutions to helping her heal from a myriad of symptoms, dif cult to label medically. As has been my custom, I thoroughly evaluated her mouth on multiple levels, examin-ing her gums, TMJ, teeth, existing dental restorations, tongue posture, soft tissue, dental materials, and level of oral hygiene, utilizing digital x-rays, photographs, a laser cavity detector, and illuminated high mag-ni cation. My goal is to identify as many potential stressors in the oral cavity as possible, believing that the nature, magnitude, and duration of the stressors’ existence impact the immune system in, at the very least, diverting the attention of the immune system from other maladies.

During the course of the exami-nation, the former patient revealed to me that although she still had the antibodies for Systemic Lupus Erythematosis, SLE, she had not experienced any symptoms since completing treatment in my of ce seven years ago. That was why she had brought her sister in for an ex-amination and consultation with me. She wondered if a similar approach to dental care might be bene cial for her sister. Healthy mouth, healthy body, the American Dental Association says, so… of course I agree, being the good supportive dentist I am, applauding the ADA for some of the good work it does.

Another case history? Last week a gentleman suffering from high blood pressure, obesity, and shortness of breath informed my staff that he felt better than he had in years fol-

lowing several hours of full mouth periodontal debridement with our skilled registered dental hygienists. Even though he was still slightly numb, he said, later that evening his energy was signi cantly improved, as well as his mental clarity, includ-ing a reduction of whole body pain. All of this from just having his teeth thoroughly cleaned, because he, like 70-90% of Americans suffer from un-diagnosed gum disease. This was the third or fourth time I had heard such a revelation from a patient, leading me

to believe that rapidly lowering the total amount of bacteria in the head can have a signi cant effect on our health. Quickly.

The previous hypothetical link came to me when a physician called to acknowledge that her patient was now responding to her therapy fol-lowing a similar protocol. Prior to thoroughly cleaning her mouth and eliminating two cavities, this patient had been non-responsive to all of the physician’s efforts to stimulate her immune system and heal. She was now thrilled to see the patient’s prog-ress and called to understand why this was happening. We concluded that the reduction in bacteria was enabling her immune system to nally direct its attention to other priorities in the body rather than deal with an appar-ent chronic low grade sub-clinical infection in the head, localized to the mouth, primarily between and around the teeth. With this awareness came other implications, however.

The common denominator? A systematic approach to achieving a healthy mouth on multiple lev-els, attending to all of the possible stressors on and in the oral system, understanding that there are multiple types of stressors and each one exerts its in uence in a unique way. The stressors? Bacteria, number and type, from decay, gum disease, bad oral hygiene, poorly contoured, rough dental restorations that promote bac-terial accumulation and proliferation, inaccessible concave surfaces, plus the energetic effects of mixed metals, including the out gassing of mercury from silver colored llings, facilitated by the presence of gold. All of these physical in uences are impacting our

immune systems. Our symptoms we experience and report to health care practitioners are the logical result of this oral pollution. Unless the under-lying dental issues are strategically, safely, and effectively reduced or better yet, eliminated, then the medi-cal treatment regime we are engaged in will be little more than slightly effective symptom management. Ar-guably… the mouth comes rst.

This concept does not support the current perceived hierarchy in health care, however, as dentists do

not intentionally do medically related dental care due to the restrictions placed on both professions, not to mention the lack of communication and common understanding between the medical and den-tal professions. Nonetheless, the few dentists that do treat the whole mouth systemically oftentimes see healing of ap-parently unrelated symptoms. There are many reasons for this, including the somewhat obvious economic reasons,

where patients are more likely to seek care for a single tooth rather than a whole mouth. Plus, it takes much more skill to restore a whole mouth that one can only acquire after years of dedicated post-graduate work.

Detoxifying an entire mouth and rebuilding it better are tech-niques that are not taught in dental schools, necessitating specialized training, instrumentation, and travel. It has taken me over 15 years of soul searching and analysis, coupled with revelations from my patients over that time frame to become comfort-able with knowing that when patients unify their dentistry, health bene ts will occur. What those bene ts will speci cally be depends on the issues the patient possesses along with other factors, including the willingness to make lifestyle changes, if they have not also been examined and instituted already.

Don’t you think it is time we reconnected the mouth for dentistry and medicine? I welcome patients who are willing to invest in their health and educate themselves when it comes to understanding the particular stressors in their mouths. Likewise, I welcome the testimonials that only serve to validate a legitimate direction for the dental and medical professions to embark. We are here to heal, are we not?

by David L. Biles, DDS, MA

I happened to pick up a copy of the January 22 issue of the San Jose Mercury News to peruse during a lunch break when voila’… a new editorial,

“Vaccine Law Shows It’s Work-ing”, extolling the efficacy of the new fast tracked forced vaccination law, SB277, signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown, nearly immediately after passage through the California Legis-lature. I could only wonder on that day, January 22, why was it that, out of the apparent blue, recognition was being rendered to this topic, again. I then wondered when the same or similar editorial would appear in the Santa Cruz Sentinel. It wasn’t long, 5 days later, January 27, as a matter of fact, until a similar editorial did, indeed, appear in the Sentinel, “California’s Vaccination Rates Show New Law Working”. I like my title better… “Informed, Rational, Concerned Santa Cruz County Parents Reject Forced Vaccinations Mandated by Draconian California Political Machine”.

Both editorials said essentially the same thing, with a few different nuances. Ironically, located directly under the vaccine editorial in the Mer-cury News, there was another editorial position urging swift action to protect the dwindling bee colony populations, now attributed to a class of insecticides known as neonicotinoids, evidently the most widely used type in the world. While some may question the ironic association, I don’t, but find it tragic that, on the one hand the editors call for a worldwide ban on neonicotinoids to preserve bees, while simultane-ously ramping up the inoculation of unwilling innocent children raised by resistant parents. How sad.

Bees are clearly vital to our survival, as are humans who are vac-cine free, if for no other purpose than to serve as control group members, in a very large population study on vaccine efficacy and safety. The control group clearly being small and self selected. The children of the Amish, on some level, do represent that control group, but others should be welcomed, rather than excoriated by media and banned from public and private educational opportunities, because some fanatic, with financial ties with Big Pharma, has the skill set and resources to ma-nipulate popular thought in a political body.

SB277, as we should all forever

remember, was introduced into the California Legislature by Senators Richard Pan and Ben Allen. Senator Pan, a pediatrician by trade and a recipient of huge campaign contribu-tions from Big Pharma, fast tracked this legislation through the legislative pro-cess. The Bay Area News Group, responsible for the edi-torial position, lauded Dr. Pan’s efforts for shepherding SB277 to passage. I can only imagine his actions being cheered on in Big Pharma boardrooms across the country as massive profits could be anticipated for an essentially unregulated product. Legal liability, as one may recall, has been removed for vaccine makers under the auspices of the wonderful Patriot Act. Once California fell, as some would see it, it is only inevitable that the rest of the country will follow suit, and the dealmakers can spend the rest of their days counting their money.

Santa Cruz county residents should take pride, quite frankly, in standing up for personal beliefs, as should the residents of the other 19 counties who fall far below the goals set. Santa Cruz County reported that only 87.5% of kindergarteners were vaccinated, while Trinity, Nevada, and Tuolumne counties reported compliance below 77%. Sad marks, according to the editorial.

If we can believe what the fear mongers are saying, 20 of the 58 coun-ties in California are at grave risk for some massive childhood disease out-break, so perhaps those unvaccinated should take emergency steps to stay healthier. Studies by the Center for Disease Control, a private corporation, show, according to the editorial, that a 90% compliance rate is necessary to keep disease such as measles and whooping cough from spreading. One must ponder that we have been on the verge of impending epidemics forever. What a frightening thought to harbor. Ignorance is bliss, after all. We should thank Big Pharma, Senators Pan and Allen, plus Governor Brown and all the others for helping us learn of our errors and the thoughtfully crafted laws to protect us from our own self-destructive ways.

So, why the brouhaha about vaccines again? Evidently, the Coun-cil for Vaccine Safety, a non-profit founded by a Ms. Brandy Vaughan, a former pharmaceutical rep for Merck, has placed a number of billboard ads, some near schools, claiming that vac-

cinations pose serious health threats. An editorial appearing today, February 8, in the Sentinel slams the “Anti-vaccine Hogwash” and concludes that since there are few billboards in

the county, residents won’t have to exposed to the “fear mongering”. Fear mon-gering? Fear mongering?

FEAR MONGERING? Give us all a break.

Last week, the History Chan-nel aired a two-hour special on the Jonestown Massacre, an event that occurred on November 18, 1978 in Guyana, a small country on the north-east cost of South America, when 913 people died of cyanide laced Kool-Aid, given to them by their religious leader Jim Jones. Only 167 managed to escape to share the tale. Evidently, a rehearsal of the Kool-Aid ritual had occurred previously, used by founder Jim Jones as a conditioning exercise. The exercise worked quite well. Only 167 resisted.

See any parallels here with forced vaccinations? With no legal liabilities to rein in vaccine drug mak-ing activity, and 300 vaccines now under research review by Big Pharma, one should worry that we have lost, or are currently seeing the loss of self- determination, when it comes to personal decision-making on matters of health.

One must now consider the upcoming Presidential election and the implications. With only one candidate running for President willing to defend a parent’s right to make choices on immunizations for their offspring, Donald Trump, will we/could we see forced vaccinations as the ‘make or break issue’? Could be.

As for me, I am grateful that Brandy Vaughan and the Council for Vaccine Safety: www.CouncilForVaccineSafety.org, continues to keep this issue very public. Hand Analysis is the modern, scientific based form of the ancient art of palm-istry. Whereas palm-

istry is defined as foretelling the future from the lines of your palm, hand analysis seeks to further self-understanding through the examination of the entirety of your hands. To have your hands read is to stare deep into the truth mirror, to stand revealed before your very eyes. A hand reading shows you who you are today and who you can be at your best.

The hand analyst examines the overall

More than a set of goals, beyond right livelihood, your Life Purpose is your Right Life, an ongoing connection to a personal directive. It is your highest potential expressing itself naturally and powerfully in all you do, always seeking expression. To know

cance of past events and current circumstances unfolding.

Life Lesson: the biggest challenge, the part of you that needs the most practice and patience to master. It is your least evolved skill on a spiri-tual and practical level. Turns out there’s one food that can eat away at your brain—literally. Scien-

tists at Charité University Medical Centre in Berlin have found eating large amounts of sugar or carbohydrates is linked to a smaller hippocampus, the area of the brain in-volved in memory. This could explain why they also discovered that high levels of blood glucose are associated with impaired memory and could potentially lead to dementia. Thus, sugar can harm both brain structure and function.

Diabetes, a condition characterized by chronically elevated blood sugar, is linked to a higher risk of dementia and reduced hippocam-pus size. In view of these facts, the study sought to determine the effects of sugar on people who don’t have the illness. Researchers monitored the long- and short-term glucose levels of 141 non-diabetic adults as well as imaged their brain with an MRI scan and tested their memory. They found higher levels of glucose were linked to shrinkage of the hippocampus and impaired memory. The results suggest sugar can alter brain structure and harm memory even in people who don’t have diabetes.Earlier Research Shows Sugar, High Fructose Corn Syrup and Refined Carbs Hinder Brain Function

Excluding cancers of the skin, breast cancer is the most frequently diag-nosed cancer in women and the sec-ond leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.

One out of eight American women who live to be 85 years of age will develop breast cancer. It is the most common cancer in women under the age of 50 and breast cancers in younger women tend to be more aggressive and have poorer survival rates.

The key to breast cancer survival rests upon its earliest possible detection. If discovered in its earliest stages, 95% cure rates are possible. Yes, 95%! The majority of breast cancers are actually detected from women doing their own self breast exams. If you are unsure of how to do your own breast exam or don’t know what exactly to look for, be sure to ask your doctor.

In this day and age, especially here in California, where women are actively involved in making educated, informed choices about their health care, Breast Thermography is an extremely valuable tool in early breast cancer detection and can offer women a sensitive, non-invasive addition to their regular breast exams and check-ups.

Breast Thermography is a procedure that has the ability to warn women up to 10 years before any other procedure that a cancer may be forming, and a positive thermographic image represents the highest known risk factor for the future development of breast cancer.

We are most familiar with a mammo-gram, so how does Breast Thermography dif-fer? The answer is that both are screening tests that do not specifically diagnose breast cancer, but screen for changes in local tissues due to various causes. Both are superior to clinical or self-examination for detecting early pathologi-cal changes. Mammography detects anatomical changes and is more precise than thermography in identifying the exact location of a lesion, while thermography detects physiological changes that occur much earlier than anatomical changes.

However, whereas mammograms emit radiation into the breast and cause pain by compression, both of which are damaging to the breast tis-sue, Thermography is non-invasive, painless and harmless. Images of the breast are taken using an ultra-sensitive medical infrared imag-ing camera. Sophisticated computer programs then allow the Doctor to isolate temperature

differentials, analyze vasculature and obtain other important data to determine the health of the breast tissue.

One of the pow-erful benefits of Breast Thermography is that it has the ability to give a warning signal in ad-vance of invasive tumor growth. However, con-ventionally, breast ther-mography is not meant

to replace a mammogram, although, upon a suspicious finding on a thermography, a woman will choose to skip a mammogram in favor of the next step (often an ultrasound and/or biopsy).

Studies show that the earliest detection is realized when a multiple testing approach to screening is taken. This multimodal approach includes breast self-examinations, physical breast exams by a doctor, mammography, and thermography.

A lot of aches and pains just go away. The body has an innate capacity to heal, often taking care of itself without needing the at-tention of our conscious mind. If

the body cannot heal to its original state, the body will then heal in a “compensated” way, also doing so in the background without bothering us.

But what if the “owie” does not go away? Or what if the original owie goes away, but then the compensated area starts to mysteriously hurt? What if you try various things to fix the owie, but nothing seems to work, or nothing works for long?

Problems range from an outright “owie,” (as in an injured ankle or a kinked neck), to other troubles such as chronic low energy, mood issues, sleep problems, digestive distress, or brain problems. They can all be looked at the same way. Difficult, unresponsive issues usually have one of two things going on. Either, the body needs one exact remedy, and that one exact remedy has not yet been tried. Or more frequently, there are a number of prongs to the issue, and all prongs must be addressed before the progress can really take hold.

If a practitioner looks at every complaint as a potential multi-pronged issue, then the practitioner is more likely to be successful in finding a solution for the patient, no matter how simple or complicated the problem is. This comprehensive or “holistic” approach also gives the patient an opportunity to see how their lifestyle impacts their health, and to make proactive changes for their future.

Here is an example of a multi-pronged problem I have seen (keep in mind, the same complaint in another person may have different prongs, thus different solutions)…. A busy wom-an in her late 30’s twisted her ankle and it just wouldn’t fully heal. She was prone to retwisting her ankle, even in mild stress environments. The

resolution in this case was: adre-nal nutritional support—I used Drenamin by Standard Pro-cess (because weak adrenals are associated with ligament laxity); dietary manganese sup-port (manganese being the min-eral that feeds the ligaments); kinesio-taping the ankle (because the weak ligaments needed the neurological stimulation and the support); and cranio-sacral

technique (to dissipate the cellular trauma in the joints).

Another example was chronic low back pain in a man in his early 60’s. Al-though I addressed this as a multi-pronged solution, applying chiropractic to his

back, asking him about situ-ational stressors, and query-ing him about his diet, this man’s low back pain had a single source cause, and that was a dietary dairy allergy. Once the dairy was elimi-nated, the back pain was gone to stay. If I had been fixated on the structural solution (no pun intended), I

would have missed his real solution. What can you do? Sleuth out your prob-

lems. Look at your diet, your stress levels, and your repeated motions activities and rest positions. Make journals to see patterns that may contribute to your issue. Consult a practitioner for things you cannot do yourself.Sylvia Skefich is a Doctor of Chiropractic with a holistic approach and non-force specialties. During the Nat ional Va c c i n e Advisory Commit-

tee’s (NVAC) February meeting, American adults were put on notice by Big Brother that non-compli-ance with federal vaccine recommendations

have unveiled a new plan to launch a massive nationwide vaccination promotion campaign involving private business and non-profit organizations to pressure all adults to comply with the adult vaccination schedule approved by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

NVAC has authored the National Adult Immunization Plan (NAIP)the plan will be turned over to the Interagency Adult Immunization Task Force (AIFT) to create an implementation plan. Notably, this task force is composed of “vested interest” stakeholders and no consumer representation for those groups concerned with vaccine safety and informed consent.

NVIC has submitted our p u b l i c c o m -ments and rec-ommendations for the NVAC’s draft National Adult Immu-nization Plan.2 Your opportu-nity to submit

your comments and concerns about this plan has been extended to March 23rd. We encourage all of our readers to participate in the public comment process and submit comments to the NVAC on the NAIP. Please forward this article to family and friends and encourage them to submit public comments, too.

“OKAY, BOYS, HERE’S what we do. We’ve got this old virus called Zika. It’s been around for 60

years that we know of. It never caused anything serious. A real dud. But we’ve got to explain all these babies born with small heads and brain damage. We’ve got to protect some important people and shield them from heavy blame. So let’s bring back Zika. Even though very few mothers who give birth to babies with defects have the dud-virus, we can finesse that. People are idiots. So let’s build up Zika into a terrifying killer. Get our PR folks moving. Spread some money around. You know, the usual. And we make out on the back-end with a Zika vaccine.”

This is the third article in my series on the Zika Freakout. In my previous piece, I listed six top candidates for causing smaller heads and brain damage in Brazilian babies.

None of those candidates is the Zika virus, which has a history of creating only minor illness, at worst. My top six may, indeed, be working together to bring about disastrous consequences.

In this article, I’ll focus on one candidate, the genetically-engineered (GE) mosquitoes which have already been released in Brazil, with the aim of decimating the population of mosquitoes that carry dengue fever, Zika, yellow fever, and chikungunya.

First of all, and ominously, the GE mosquitoes were released in the same area of Brazil (Juazeiro) where now most of the birth defects are being reported. This is called a clue. But who is deeply investigating it? No one in official circles.

This is akin to saying, “Well, we just toured the war-torn city. Of course, last week we bombed it, but that couldn’t possibly account for the destruction.”

The company releasing the GE mosquitoes, Oxitec, has grants for their experiments from Bill Gates—never a good sign.

Oxitec is owned by Intrexon, which is owned by billionaire Randal J Kirk. The Hoovers profile of Intrexon, offers this:

“One man’s frankenfood is another man’s solution to world hunger. Intrexon is developing technology that uses synthetic biology, or biological engineering, to make advances in everything from pharmaceuticals to genetically modified plants and animals. The company has development agreements with AquaBounty (genetically modified salmon…”

Genetically modified animals. Just what we need. What could go wrong? And the highly controversial GE salmon is under attack for the usual reason: the omission of actual science that proves this fish is safe for consumption and won’t wreak havoc in the aqua-environment.

Intrexon employs the famous Dr. Sam Broder as its Senior Vice-President, Health Sector. For six years, Broder was the Director of the US National Cancer Institute. He was instrumental in bringing the AIDS drug, AZT, to market. This previously failed chemotherapy drug was taken off the shelf and subjected to

a scandal-ridden clinical trial, which resulted in FDA approval. AZT is extremely toxic. It prevents human cells from replicating. It suppresses the immune system—the very system AIDS is supposed to be attacking. Other than that, no problem.

On November 28, 2011, Intrexon Chairman Randal Kirk welcomed two new executives to the company’s board of directors: Robert B. Shapiro and Jeffrey B. Kindler. Shapiro was the former CEO of Monsanto and NutraSweet (aspartame). Kindler was the former CEO of drug giant Pfizer and Executive VP and General Counsel of McDonald’s. If those boys don’t inspire trust, who could? Cancer-causing Roundup, brain-attacking aspartame, Bextra ($2.3 billion fine paid out),

and check-your-colon-at-the-door Big Macs. If they release a genetically-engineered mosquito, you know it’s safe—and delicious, too.

Intrexon’s GE male-mosquito “triumph” is based on the following: the male will mate with female mosquitoes that carry Zika; the females will give birth, but their offspring won’t advance past the larval stage. Thus, the Zika-carrying insect population will decline drastically. However, no long-term safety studies have been done. This is a grand insect and human experiment.

“Let’s try it and see what happens. What possible problems could develop? How could a genetically-engineered mosquito possibly affect humans in an adverse way? Nonsense. Everything’s fine.”

Is it? In her excellent Activist Post article (1/28), “Zika Outbreak Epicenter…”, Claire Bernish probes deeper into the “science.” She uncovers a little-known antibiotic connection and rips a gaping hole in the bland assurance

that all is well. I strongly recommend reading her piece. I’ll cobble together an excerpt:

“Those genetically-modified mosquitoes work to control wild, potentially disease-carrying populations in a very specific manner. Only the male [GE] modified Aedes mosquitoes are supposed to be released into the wild — as they will mate with their unaltered female counterparts. Once offspring are produced, the [GE] modified, scientific facet is supposed to ‘kick in’ and kill that larvae before it reaches breeding age — if tetracycline [antibiotic] is not present during [the larvae’s] development. But there is a problem.” (emphasis added)

“According to an unclassified document from the Trade and Agriculture Directorate

Committee for Agriculture dated February 2015, Brazil is the third largest in ‘global antimicrobial consumption in food animal production’ — meaning, Brazil is third in the world for its use of tetracycline [antibiotics] in its food animals. As a study by the American Society of Agronomy, et. al., explained, ‘It is estimated that approximately 75% of antibiotics are not absorbed by animals and are excreted in waste.’ One of the antibiotics (or antimicrobials) specifically named in that report for its environmental persistence is tetracycline.”

“In fact, as a confidential internal Oxitec document divulged in 2012, that survival rate [of offspring] could be as high as 15% — even with low levels of tetracycline present. ‘Even small amounts of tetracycline can repress’ the engineered lethality. Indeed, that 15% survival rate was described by Oxitec…”

The bottom line? The excreted tetracycline-laden waste of farm animals makes it way to the mosquito breeding grounds. The GE male mosquito mates with the female, and far more offspring survive than were planned — because the offspring, in their larvae stage, are feeding on tetracycline-tainted food and water. What qualities do these survivors carry? They are the children of a natural insect and a GE insect. They bite humans. They are unknowns. In the history of the planet, they’ve never existed before. Of course, we’re told there is no problem. We’re told that scientists have everything under

control. If you buy that on face value, I have condos for sale on Jupiter.

And again, there is this nagging factor: the surge in horrendous birth defects in Brazil is happening in the same area where the GE mosquitoes were released, and thus where some of their natural-GE-hybrid offspring may have survived.

Don’t worry, be happy. They’re just tinkering with genes. They didn’t need to do safety studies. They have a theory. The theory must be correct. And it’s only mosquitoes, after all. Little things. They bite a person’s neck, the person swats them with his hand. End of story.

Unless it isn’t.Thank you, Oxitec. Thank you, Bill

Gates. Thank you, Intrexon. Thank you, Randal Kirk. Thank you, Sam Broder.

Thus far in this article, I haven’t mentioned the word conspiracy once. But if you want to go there, what about this? Who can say, with authority, what these male genetically-engineered mosquitoes are equipped to carry? Who can say with assurance he knows all the qualities and factors and substances in the bodies of these insects?

It’s very much like looking at the faint trail of a very high-flying, high-tech, up-to-the-minute military jet. Do you know everything that’s on board? Do you know, beyond listed specs, what that plane is actually designed to be capable of?

Oh, and by the way, researchers are now “rushing” to develop a vaccine for Zika. You know, Zika, the virus that doesn’t cause anything.

Perfecto.Jon Rappoport

IMAGINE YOU WERE able to have a dialogue with your own thoughts. It’d be something like

the two angels on your shoulders talking back and forth. Let’s call the angel on your right shoulder “Posi-tive Thoughts” and the angle on your left shoulder “Negative Thoughts.”

Now, think of a time when you were feeling pretty down, d e p r e s s e d , hopeless, irri-tated, tearful or sad. Try to remember where were you and who were you with (maybe alone?) and

what were you doing (maybe try to fall asleep and couldn’t?)

Now try to remember some of the thoughts that were going through your mind at that time, maybe even going through your mind right now as you are thinking of that moment.

See if you can jot down some of your thoughts.

For example, let’s assume the following thoughts:

1. I blew it;2. They wont want to see me

again;3. Everyone will think I am a

fool;4. I can’t believe I could not

pull it off;5. I am just too slow, too stupid,

or too “something”; 6. It’s now over, I will not be

able to redeem myself again.

Now, let’s say that the positive thoughts (right shoulder angel) come from a place where you are accept-

ing yourself with all your flaws and all your perfections and whatever in between. No judgment; all loving and comfortable with what and who you are. And let’s imagine the negative thoughts (left shoulder angel) come from a place where you are highly self-critical, punitive, unkind, and a hard to please person. Now imagine this conversation between the two angels:

Left Angel: “You blew it, they won’t want to see you again, and you are just too slow and too stupid.”

Right angel: “You are right, I did seem to be slower than some of the other people, but also a bit faster than a few other ones too. And yes, it might just be true that these people may choose to not see me again and instead choose to invite those people faster than me. And, yes it might even be true that my level of smarts is only so much, and I am sure there are smarter people than me in this world, and some who are less smart than me. But I love myself the way I am. I re-fuse to make myself feel bad, ashamed and be critical of myself over qualities that actually describe me.

So, while it might have been nice to be wittier, it sure is nice to be what I am. I am fine, and I will be OK, no matter who invites to see me.”

Next time you find yourself torn with sad and depressed feelings, iden-tify what the angels on each shoulder are saying. Then use “Acceptance” as a technique to reduce those depressed feelings. And, unexpectedly, you might notice a welcomed sigh of relief from those awful negative feelings.

How Can Acceptance and Commitment Lift Depression?

KARMA IS NOT only real, it shows in our astrology. The Great Holdup predicts our

struggles and distress through the pattern of our birth planets. Karma is not cast in stone! With insight and coaching, men and women learn to surpass their karma.

Paramahansa Yogananda, the great yogi and Guru, said: “Walk with cour-age. Go forward from day-to-day with calm, inner faith. Eventually, you will pass beyond every shadow of bad karma, beyond all tests and difficulties and will behold—at last—the dawn of divine fulfillment. In that highest of all states of Consciousness will come freedom from every last, trailing vapor of misfortune.”

Reality is highly flex-ible and subject to change. Karmic misunderstanding, hatreds and resentments can dissipate in a day. The Berlin Wall no longer stands. Decades after the Viet Nam war, American tourists vacation there. Cuba is open for business again. First and last, karma is always about the past: yesterday, or the ingrained experiences and emotions of a past life.

Often mistaken for fate, karma seems powerful, mysterious and inac-cessible. Karma needs our buy-in and cooperation to maintain its grip on

our imagination and actions. My own Guru points out the human mind is made of uni-versal Consciousness. This means our minds come pre-

loaded with more than karma—all minds have the power to quickly cast aside the limitations of karma.

Freedom from karma can take lifetimes

of struggle, or come with surprising speed. Just as a flashlight illuminates a dark room, astrology

makes our karma visible—a thing to discuss, understand and even chuckle over. Yogananda’s master practiced astrology and knew it to be a boon to human understanding, a tool of spiri-tual insight and emotional freedom.

In addition to the Great Holdup in your astrology, you have one or more ‘Great Gift’ patterns. Every chart displays natural talents, even genius. The first step is to know what each pattern says. Clarity is key. The Great Holdup’s distress and confu-sion heal quickly as we redirect our energy and attention from conflict to opportunity. The Great Gifts may be the foundation of your personal and professional life, or not. It is easy to lose track of them in the fray of life.

Ready to learn more about your Great Holdup? There are two free ways to proceed: your chart by email, or group journaling class. Your emailed birth chart will have

the Great Holdup clearly marked along with my comments. The class is at Center for Health in Santa Cruz on Tuesday evening February 16th, 06:30 PM to 8:00 PM.

For either the emailed gift chart or the free class, kindly email your name, plus date, time and town of birth to: Rob Ryan—Master Astrolo-ger, [email protected]. The class is limited to 7 persons and must be confirmed by email in advance. Call with questions to 831.726.9609

Relief from the pain and confusion of divorce—and other trials of the spir-it—are central themes in Rob Ryan’s 30-year private practice. Coaching with astrological insights is his princi-pal tool (RyanCoaching.com). Togeth-er with his wife Carol, Rob founded the Center for Health in 1992. Still going strong today, their CFH in Santa Cruz has grown from 3 to 30 associates (CenterForHealthsc.com).

The Sleeping Bodyby Evelyn von Nottbeck, RMT

We spend a good part of a 24 hour day in our bed. In an average lifetime we spend approxi-mately 227,000 hours lying down. Given these numbers, it’s important to address the subject of sleeping positions.

For many people, sleeping on their side seems to be most comfortable. If this is the case for you, it is recommended to use specific pil-lows supporting the neutral position of the body from head to toe. Neutral means the spine is in alignment. Ideally, the head is neither raised too high nor low and the neck is supported. Finding the right pillow is crucial. Furthermore, when sleeping on your side, hugging a body pillow will allow your spine, arms, and legs to be in a supported position. With a pillow in between the arms, the shoulders are not strained forward,

which would create tension in the upper and mid-back region. In like manner, the low back will not be stressed, and the hip joint will not be torqued with the pillow in between the legs. Finally, sleeping on the left side of your body can be beneficial for circulation of the heart, aiding digestion, and improving lymphatic drainage.

Sleeping on the back is most comfortable for many, but also poses a problem to those with sleep apnea. When lying on the back, a small pillow supporting the natural curve of the neck is recommended. To avoid hyper-extension of the knees, placing a small pillow underneath them is helpful. However, lying on the back may exacerbate the tendency for people to snore, because the airways may be more constricted in this position. If sleep apnea is a factor then back

sleeping is not recommended. Stomach sleeping is the most difficult

position on the body. This position may feel com-fortable, however, the neck and spinal curves are compromised. With the neck in a twisted positon, the vertebrae are unnaturally positioned for long periods of time. This can cause muscle soreness and stiffness upon awakening. If the mattress is not firm, the lumbar spine will be swayed and over the long term can lead to lower back pain. Some people find it difficult to wean out of this position. Investing in a body pillow can really help the transition to a side lying posture.

The final sleeping pose to discuss is the fetal position. A high percentage of people do prefer this position. It tends to be hard on the joints of the spine, especially with any arthritic

type conditions. To be curled in one position for long periods of time may lead to stiffness and soreness in the body. If this is a preferred pose for you, try uncurling a little and hugging a pillow. Be sure to have your head supported correctly.

The positioning for a healthy night’s rest is worthy of our attention because many hours are spent in our beds. Additionally, choosing the correct mattress and pillows for our bodies will ensure a better sleep. Evelyn von Nottbeck is a Registered Massage Therapist. Yoga

by Rubén VásquezPeople often people ask me how to start

practicing Yoga. Here are 10 ideas to keep in mind after you decide to start doing Yoga:

1. Find a Yoga class at a convenient time and location.

It is perfectly fine to try different studios and teachers. Sometimes it may take a couple of classes to find a class that is right for you. If the class is out of the way or at an inconvenient time, it might be difficult to find the time to go to class.

2. Take beginning level classes. The beginning level classes allow you to

build a strong foundation. Many studios offer introductory yoga workshops and classes. This is essential, even if you are in good shape, because the beginning classes give you the opportunity to learn the basic vocabulary of Yoga and to be-come acquainted with sound guiding principles for your practice.

3. Be patient.Allow your learning to unfold at its own

pace. Sometimes we want to see quick results for our efforts. Bringing this mindset to Yoga may prompt you to go beyond your level of ability. Instead, remember that you have the rest of your life to practice Yoga. Work at a pace that is perfect for you.4. Do not compete with yourself

or with others in the class. In the U.S., we live in a very competitive

and achievement-oriented society. To please our ego, sometimes we try to compete with ourselves or with others in class. This competitiveness can result in injuries as we try to do more than we can. Yoga is about self knowledge, so there is no room for competition. Actually, competing with ourselves, or with others, interferes with our capacity to be fully present in the practice.

5. Enjoy being a beginnerPeople who have practiced yoga before

may assume that they know the pose, which can result in a mechanical practice. Being new to Yoga gives you great advantages: First, you have no preconceived notions about the practice, which makes it easy to be open and pay atten-tion to what is happening. Second, you have not developed bad habits. Moreover, in the book Anatomy of Hatha Yoga, David Coulter argues that the quality of our attention within the body determines if our practice is advanced Yoga or

beginning Yoga. Thus, focus your attention on the practice and let the practice grow with your ability to focus.

6. Do not go into painYoga is not about pain. As we said before

Yoga is about integrating breath, body and mind. Always pay attention to how you feel before performing a pose, as you move into the pose and after the pose. At the first sign of resistance (mental, physical, respiratory), stop, back off a bit, normalize your breath and observe what is happening. As you become more comfortable in the pose you might be able to explore the source of resistance. Whatever you do, do not go into pain.

7. Breathe continuously. The breath is the main axis for Yoga

practice. Because the breath exists only in the present moment, attention to the breath brings your awareness to the practice. Use the breath as a

focusing device by checking that you are breathing through your nose with smooth and even breath throughout the whole practice. This might be more challenging that you expect!8. Take a break whenever

you need to.It is perfectly fine to stop when

we need to stop. Remember that be-ing present includes resting when we need to. A good pose to take a break is child’s pose. Besides, we have the rest of our life to practice Yoga!

9. Be responsible.Awareness is a key compo-

nent of Yoga practice. Remember that you are responsible for your actions. So, it is up to you to determine if the activities offered by the teacher are appropriate for you. By doing this, you are preparing for developing your personal practice.

10. Notice the effects.Throughout the day, notice the effects of

your Yoga practice, enjoy how you feel. If you feel better after practicing Yoga, use this feeling as a strong motivation to practice again.

I hpe these ideas are helpful to you as you decide to start practicing Yoga.

Next time, we’ll have an example of a simple 5 minute practice.

Namaste.I’m Rubén Vásquez. In 1996 I started practicing Yoga to improve my physical health, and almost immediately found that something deep within me agreed wholeheartedly with Yoga. Since then, Yoga has nurtured my body, mind and spirit and still motivates me to live more consciously. As a result, I continue becoming aware of many of my shortcomings, merits, challenges and the many things I’ve yet to understand. I find in Yoga an endless source of inspiration, nourishment, sup-port and learning to move towards balance. You can find more information about me, my classes, workshops and retreats on www.ruben-vasquez.com. Fitness & Sports

by Jordan Oliver, CMT & Santa Cruz CORE correspondent and Beau Jansen Pro Elite Trainer at Santa Cruz CORE.

Chiropractic care can change your life. Some c o n c e r n s o f Western cultures is that our ability

to move around is now limited with our unnatural habit of having to sit all day at work. Not only does this make for little outdoor time, but it also wreaks havoc on the spine and posture. For many of us who sit at school, at home, or behind a desk with this, ‘forward head posture,’ start to feel pain in our low back or neck. Stud-ies show that for every extra inch the head protrudes from a true center of gravity, the neck bears an extra ten pounds of stress.

Sports Chirotherapy is a revo-lutionary modality that Santa Cruz CORE Fitness + Rehab offers with Dr. Walton and Dr. Slaughter. The differ-ences show up in the results the clients achieve. With Sports Chirotherapy the entire body is evaluated, with range of motion and muscle length testing, then

Hanson Muscle Technique (a trigger point therapy) is utilized to release the tension and trigger points in the body. With the tissues relaxed the body can receive an adjustment as appropriate and the specific corrective exercises

that are prescribed help keep the body in the corrected position to create long lasting effects. Sports Chirotherapy yields amazing results, but is just one pillar in creating a foundation of optimal health. Coupling chiropractic care with one or more of these three modalities yields true holistic indi-vidualized care.

Exercise Exercise brings blood flow to

your muscles, which will increase the

ease of the adjustment and decrease post adjustment soreness. Some people wait until after an adjustment to get their sweat on, but if you work out prior, the blood flow will have increased, making your body easier

to work with, and you’ll feel great! You can take your exercise to the next level by doing corrective movements that will help the body hold the adjustment. This can be done before or after your session as well. Just be sure to dry off your sweat so you don’t offend your chiropractor with any serious body odor.

MassageNot only will a massage

make you feel wonderful and relaxed but the decrease in muscle ten-sion is going to make the adjustment a lot more effective and easier for both you and the chiropractor. Moreover, the adjustment will last longer. Dr Rhodes and Dr Walton will work in collaboration with multiple massage therapists or administer muscle release therapy themselves.

NutritionGetting blood and saliva work

done and checking for toxicity and nu-tritional deficiencies can be instrumen-tal in enhancing your body’s ability to heal properly. With toxicity or without the right nutritional building blocks, the body cannot effectively absorb and respond to the chiropractic treat-ment. A good nutritionist can analyze your blood and saliva test results and help you correct any lack of essential nutrients or buildup of toxic elements in your body. With an integrative wellness team, CORE also offers award win-ning Corrective Exercise, Massage and Nutrition practitioners. Now that you know what modalities to incorporate to maximize the effectiveness of your chiropractic visit, remember that after you will also want to get a good night’s rest and drink plenty of water. The next day you will be feeling rejuvenated and refreshed with increased strength, function and endurance! Call to set up a complimentary chiropractic assess-ment today. At Santa Cruz CORE Fitness + Rehab they not only treat clients but offer continuing education to practitioners, in order create a progressive learning community. As leaders in the industry Santa Cruz CORE offers an integrative approach in which the practitioners of massage, chiropractic, personal train-ing and rehab, as well as acupuncture, work as a team to get each person to their optimal health goal. BARRY & JOYCE VISSELL ~ Masters at Relationship

Hav ing done many coup les workshops over the last 24 years, I found my last one with the Vissells to be one of my favorites. The intimacy and trust between couples was so strong from the outset. With the support of Joyce and Barry’s loving insights and processes, my husband and I were able to reconnect on a deeper level again. Other couples worked through tough issues such as infidelity. I found their many years of marriage inspiring and helpful in gaining perspective around creating longevity in my own marriage. The Vissells are Masters at Relationship.

Megan was incredible in helping me organize and de-clutter my home. She encouraged me when I needed it and held me accountable, enabling me to eliminate many items that I do not miss. She was very insightful in her approach to organization, and gave me some key suggestions which really transformed my office and bedroom especially. Now I feel serene and grounded in my home which is an amazing transformation! I would not hesitate to recommend Megan!

2 years ago, I had a major surgery and 1/3 of my liver was removed. My surgery incision wasn’t healing. I was in severe pain and I was suffering major depression as a result, like I wanted to die. My friend who is a nurse, recommend ASEA. I had never heard of it and was skeptical, but at the point I was ready to try anything. Within days my pain diminished.

I sprayed my surgery wound and it began to heal. 10 days later I was able to go on a 7 mile hike. Shortly after that, I was back in yoga class. My recovery has been amazing!!

by Drew LewisEditor’s Note:Thank you Drew Lewis for this excel-lent summary, in your Lively Letter, of a bigger picture of ‘things’ that are go-ing on in our cities, regions, the world, etc. Thank you for including resources for other LifeLong Learners. This was going to go in as a ‘Lively Letter’. It certainly ‘grew’ as there is so much to say and include. Thanks again, Drew, for your effort to get so much info out there. And, to include the Resources/References, too.

2016 MAY BE THE YEAR OF THE MASS HUMAN REVELATION THAT MUCH OF WHAT WE HAVE BEEN LED TO BELIEVE IS ACTU-ALLY A SERIES OF LIES THAT AMOUNT TO IN ESSENCE ONE GIGANTIC HOAX.

As a community activist working on various issues from label-ing GMO’s, Suppressed Cancer Cures to freedom from mandatory injections of toxic chemicals into our bodies through forced vaccination, I have done a lot of research into many of these subjects.

To my surprise I have learned that most of the official sto-ries defining the basis, character and nature of the problems we are facing are totally false.

Lets take the vaccine issue for example. The official narrative/paradigm of the Vaccine Manufactur-ers and their shills the CDC and AMA is that vaccines are safe and effective. Most of the general populace assumes that to be true, most people never look past the official government narrative and corporate sound bites. When one actually does investigate the facts and actual science behind these claims an-other reality of fraud, lies, permanent disability and death appears.

Another huge hoax that is going on is the rash of “Mass Shoot-ings”. Again, looking at the actual evidence and witness testimony one can see that these “Mass Shootings” are “Staged Events”, employing “Cri-sis Actors” and “Previously Filmed Drills” that were practice exercises for “Mass Shootings” just before or dur-ing the actual “Live” shooting event. This scenario has been repeated over and over since 9/11, the most obvious

staged “False Flag” event of the 21st century. The basic model or paradigm we are looking at here is what I call “Planned Confusion, Disinformation and Chaos”.

As Dr. Leonard Coldwell has written in a recent piece “Mind control through emotional domination: How we’re all being manipulated by the “crisis of the NOW”; “This psy-chological bombardment is waged primarily via the mainstream media which assaults the viewer by the hour with images of violence, war, emo-tions and conflict. Because the human nervous system is hard wired to focus on immediate threats accompanied by depictions of violence, mainstream media viewers have their attention and mental resources funneled into the never-ending “crisis of the NOW” from which they can never have the mental breathing room to apply logic, reason or historical context. Only the crisis of the now is allowed to be entertained: riots in the streets, the aftermath of a staged school shooting, or even an over hyped measles crisis that just happened to take place at America’s epicenter of illusions and

theater: Disneyland.” I encourage everyone with a

functioning brain to spend some time looking into this, because we are being lied to on a grand scale by very profes-sional psychopaths and to believe and go along with their story will result in a VERY BAD OUTCOME for us all.References:Vaccine Safety Hoax, Dr. Gary

by Dr. Mercola

TEA AND COFFEE are among the most widely consumed beverages in the world. Tea is the most consumed beverage next to water, with 2 billion people drinking it every morning. Eighty-seven percent of millennials also report

drinking it regularly. In the U.S. nearly 60 percent of adults drink

coffee each morning, and 78 percent drink it at least occasionally. On the average, coffee drinkers consume about two cups a day.

Both coffee and tea contain caffeine (although there are also decaffeinated varieties), which has been linked to adverse health effects such as elevated blood pressure, gastric upset, and anxiety.

However, both coffee and tea contain other health-promoting ingredients that may outweigh the drawbacks of caffeine.

Among them are beneficial antioxidants and, according to researchers, coffee, because of the volume consumed, not because of its high amount, is the primary source of antioxidants in the American diet. The antioxidants may even help neutralize the harsher effects of the caffeine that coffee naturally contains.

Coffee CaveatsBe careful, though, as most all coffee produced

is heavily contaminated with pesticides. It’s actually one of the most heavily sprayed crops. So, when we speak about the benefits of coffee, let it be understood that we’re talking about organic (ideally fair trade), pesticide-free coffee.

Another “con” is that most coffee available today is rancid, packed from ground beans that cannot survive even a week before getting stale. This is because the rate of rancidity increases dramatically once you grind the beans. Hence, much of the bagged coffee you find in your grocery store are already degraded.

All that will give you is the caffeine. It won’t provide you with healthy nutritional co-factors. So another basic principle in using coffee for its health benefits is to grind your own coffee beans.

Thirdly, you’ll want to make sure it’s roasted correctly. It’s often the case that foods with the darkest pigments offer the most robust benefits to health, and dark roast coffee, such as French Roast, espresso or Turkish coffee, may be no exception.

One 2011 study found that dark roast coffee led to a significant body weight reduction in pre-obese volunteers, whereas light roast did not. Dark roast coffee also produces more of a chemical that helps prevent the production of excess stomach acid, so it may be easier on your stomach.

Overall, the healthiest form of coffee is organic, freshly ground, and served black, meaning without milk or sugar. Adding dairy may interfere with your body’s absorption of beneficial chlorogenic acids, while the added sugar will contribute to insulin resistance, which is at the heart of most chronic disease.

Lastly, if you use a “drip” coffee maker, be sure to use non-bleached filters. The bright white ones are chlorine-bleached, and some of this chlorine will leach from the filter during the brewing process. Bleached filters may also contain dangerous

disinfection byproducts, such as dioxin.

Quality Is Key for Tea as WellTea also has its issues. Green tea plants are known

to be especially effective at absorbing lead from the soil, which is then taken up into the plants’ leaves.

Areas with excessive industrial pollution, such as China (where nearly 90 percent of the world’s green tea is produced), may contain substantial amounts of lead.

While the lead in the tea leaves is not thought to leach very effectively into the tea, if you’re consuming Matcha green tea (which contains the entire ground tea leaf), it’s especially important that it comes from Japan instead of China.

Both black and green teas are also naturally high in fluoride, even if organically grown without pesticides. This is because the plant readily absorbs fluoride thorough its root system, including naturally occurring fluoride in the soil.

So, as with coffee, when selecting tea, opt for organic (to avoid pesticides), grown in a pristine environment (to avoid fluoride, heavy metals, and other toxins from contaminated soil and water). A clean growing environment is essential to producing a pure, high-quality tea.

Heart Healthy Benefits of CoffeePersonally, I don’t drink coffee, and can

count the number of cups I’ve had in my lifetime on one hand. I get most of my polyphenols from 3 tablespoons of freshly ground raw cacao nibs a day, which has far more benefits than those detailed here about coffee, due to its superior polyphenol concentration.

But if you do enjoy coffee, you may be pleasantly surprised to find that properly grown, harvested and roasted coffee can actually be very healthy. According to the 2015 edition of Dietary Guidelines for Americans, you can safely consume up to five cups of coffee a day without detrimental effects.

The recommendation is based on research evaluating the link between coffee and chronic diseases, including cancer, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s.

It used to be said that coffee could increase your blood pressure, at least temporarily. But longer-term studies haven’t found a connection, and it’s now thought people may develop a tolerance to coffee’s hypertensive effects.

More recent research suggests coffee may actually be quite good for your heart health:

n One meta-analysis8 that included data from 11 studies and nearly 480,000 people found drinking 2 to 6 cups of coffee a day was associated with reduced stroke risk.

n The analysis also noted that drinking 1 to 4 cups of coffee a day was associated with a significantly lower risk of coronary heart disease in women, and that coffee consumption is inversely associated with risk of type 2 diabetes

n Another study showed moderate coffee drinking reduces your chances of being hospitalized for heart rhythm problems

n Japanese researchers found drinking a cup of coffee may trigger a 30 percent increase in blood flow in your small blood vessels, which might take some strain off your heart. The effect lasts for about 75 minutes

Overall, the healthiest form of coffee is organic, freshly ground, and served black, meaning without milk or sugar. Adding dairy may interfere with your body’s absorption of beneficial chlorogenic acids, while the

added sugar will contribute to insulin resistance, which is at the heart of most chronic disease.

n Researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard School of Public Health also found that moderate coffee consumption, defined as two 8-ounce servings a day, may protect against heart failure

n Research has even shown that coffee consumption is inversely associated with premature death. The more coffee drank, the lower the risk of death became, including deaths from heart disease, respiratory disease, stroke, diabetes, and infections

Other Health Benefits of CoffeeHigher coffee consumption is also

associated with a significantly lower incidence of Parkinson’s disease, and caffeine may help control movement in those with Parkinson’s disease, according to more recent research.1Liver cancer and liver disease are also inversely associated with coffee consumption. Interestingly, coffee appears to contain an ingredient that protects against alcoholic cirrhosis.

According to one study, drinking two or more cups of coffee daily may reduce your risk of dying from liver cirrhosis by as much as 66 percent. Italian research also found that coffee consumption may reduce your risk of liver cancer by about 40 percent, and if you drink three cups a day, the risk may be reduced by more than half.

Coffee May Boost Athletic Performance

Coffee may also provide specific benefits for athletes. In one recent meta-analysis, 5 of 9 randomized control trials included confirmed the performance-enhancing benefits of coffee. As noted in Medical News Today:

“Athletes consuming 3 to 7 mg of caffeine through coffee saw an average improvement in endurance performance of 24 percent ... [Lead author Simon Higgins] says: ‘This is helpful for athletes because coffee is a naturally occurring compound. There’s the potential that getting your caffeine by drinking coffee has similar endurance benefits as taking caffeine pills.’”

In 2011, I interviewed fitness expert Ori Hofmekler about the use of coffee to enhance sports performance, and how caffeine helps you maintain youthful muscle tissue. According to Ori, consumed right before exercise, it can provide a beneficial fitness boost.

Drinking two cups of coffee an hour before training may also reduce post-workout muscle soreness by as much as 48 percent. To put this into perspective, studies using naproxen (Aleve) achieved only a 30 percent decrease in post-workout muscle soreness, and aspirin produced a 25 percent decrease.

As for Hofmekler, he recommends having just one cup of coffee or one shot of espresso in the morning, before your workout, and no more thereafter. Because for all its benefits, it can also affect your adrenal glands and increases the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate, so moderation is still advisable.

One way to moderate your coffee consumption while still reaping the benefits both coffee and tea have to offer is to drink coffee only in the morning, and drinking tea when you want a beverage besides pure water in the afternoon.

The Health Benefits of TeaWhile the majority of tea consumed is

black tea, to maximize the health benefits of your tea drinking habit you may want to consider adding or switching to green tea instead. Green tea is recognized as an abundant source of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a catechin polyphenol, and other antioxidants. One of your

healthiest options, and my own personal favorites, is Matcha green tea.

Since it contains the entire ground tea leaf, it can contain over 100 times the EGCG provided from regular brewed green tea. Again, to avoid lead contamination, opt for Japanese-grown Matcha tea rather than those from China. Steamed is also better than roasted or pan-fried varieties.

Drinking green tea is associated with reduced mortality due to all causes, including heart disease. The holistic benefits to green tea consumption also include the following:

HEART HEALTH: Green tea improves both blood flow and the ability of your arteries to relax, with research suggesting a few cups of green tea each day may be helpful for the prevention of arterio-sclerosis, cerebral thrombus, heart attack, and stroke.

TYPE 2 DIABETES: One study24 found people who consume 6 or more cups of green tea daily had a 33 percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes than those who consumed less than 1 cup per week.

WEIGHT LOSS: There is some evidence that long-term consumption of green tea catechins is beneficial for burning fat and may work with other chemicals to increase levels of fat oxidation and thermogenesis.

BONE HEALTH: Green tea polyphenols combined with a form of vitamin D called alfacalcidol could boost bone structure and strength, according to animal research.

VISION HEALTH: Catechins in green tea may offer protection against glaucoma and other eye diseases, as research found the compounds travel from your digestive system into the tissues of your eyes. During the study, the catechins found in green tea were absorbed into various parts of the eyes anywhere from 30 minutes to 12 hours after rats were given tea.

CANCER: Green tea components have been shown to downregulate the expression of proteins involved in inflammation, cell signalization, cell motility and angiogenesis, while an association between green tea intake and decreased risk of cancers (including ovarian and breast) have been reported.

Previous research has shown that green tea polyphenols act on molecular pathways to shut down the production and spread of tumor cells. They also discourage the growth of the blood vessels that feed the tumors.

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) found in green tea even acts as an antiangiogenic and antitumor agent, and helps modulate tumor cell response to chemotherapy.

Black Coffee in the Morning & Green Tea in the Afternoon

While the research suggests you can have upwards of five cups of coffee per day without adverse effects, I believe this may be too much for many, especially with adrenal fatigue being so common. One way to balance the risks and benefits would be to limit your coffee consumption to one or two cups in the morning, and drinking green tea in the afternoon. Also remember that to achieve therapeutic benefits from coffee, it needs to be:

n Organic: Most coffee produced today is heavily contaminated with pesticides. It’s actually one of the most heavily sprayed crops grown. So, any coffee you consume should be organic, pesticide-free coffee.

n Fresh whole bean: You’ll want to purchase coffee in whole bean form and then grind it yourself to prevent rancidity. Pre-ground coffee may be rancid by the time you drink it.

n Properly dried and roasted: The coffee should smell and taste fresh, not stale. If your coffee does not have a pleasant aroma, it is likely

Overall, the healthiest form of coffee is organic, freshly ground, and served black, meaning without milk or sugar. Adding dairy may interfere with your body’s absorption of beneficial chlorogenic acids, while the

rancid and poor quality. Darker roasts may provide greater health benefits and be easier on your stomach than light roasts.

n Black: Drink your coffee black, without sugar or cream. Add sugar and you’ll certainly ruin any of the benefits discussed above by spiking your insulin levels and causing insulin resistance.

n One last caveat: Pregnant women are advised to avoid coffee altogether, as caffeine can significantly impact the

growing fetus. It is able to freely pass through the placenta, and one 2008 study31 found that just two cups of coffee ingested during pregnancy may be enough to affect fetal heart development and reduce heart function over

the entire lifespan of the child.

Since caffeine does not provide any benefits to your baby, only potential hazards, I strongly recommend pregnant women avoid ALL forms of caffeine, including coffee and caffeinated teas.

by Dr. Mercola

COFFEE IS ONE of the most popular beverages in America, with more daily devotees than even soda. According to the

National Coffee Association (NCA), 61 percent of Americans drink coffee daily (compared to 41 percent for soda).

Personally, I almost never drink coffee. I don’t like the taste, and I have more than enough energy to not need a caffeine boost. About the only time I use it is when travelling internationally to keep me up when I am tired to assist jet lag.

However, if you’ve been feeling guilty about this daily imbibing, perhaps worrying that the excess caffeine isn’t doing you any favors, don’t. Unless you are overdoing it or drowning your coffee with sweetener, a daily cup – or five! – can be quite good for you.

The coffee plant and its seeds (coffee beans) contain a natural blend of polyphenol antioxidants (including chlorogenic acids), bioflavonoids, vitamins, and minerals that all work together to offer some impressive health-promoting benefits, and even help neutralize the harsher effects of the caffeine that coffee naturally contains.2

There are literally more than 1,000 different chemicals in coffee and researchers are only beginning to tease out how the synergy between them might benefit your health.

A Few Cups of Coffee a Day May Help You Avoid Clogged Arteries

In a study of more than 25,000 people, those who drank a moderate amount of coffee – defined as three to five cups daily – were less likely to have calcium deposits in their coronary arteries than those who drank no coffee or more coffee daily.

A large part of arterial plaque consists of calcium deposits (atherosclerosis), hence the term “hardening of the arteries.” Coronary artery calcium can be a significant predictor of future heart disease risk.

The study suggests moderate coffee consumption may lower your risk of clogged arteries and related heart attacks. The researchers noted:

“Our study adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that coffee consumption might be inversely associated with CVD [cardiovascular disease] risk.”

Past research has also found that coffee appears to have a protective effect on the heart. For instance, one study showed moderate coffee drinking reduces your chances of being hospitalized for heart rhythm problems. Another study found it may trigger a 30 percent increase in blood flow in your small blood vessels, which might take some strain off your heart.

First-Time Ever Coffee Rec-ommendation from the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee

The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) released their most recent report in February 2015, which is intended to help the US Department of Health and Human Services and the US Department of Agriculture develop the soon-to-be-released 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Along with advice to remove dietary cholesterol limits, DGAC, for the first time ever, addressed coffee consumption and concluded that it

does not pose a health risk to healthy individuals. This was based on an evaluation of multiple

meta-analyses and other studies evaluating the link between coffee and chronic diseases, including cancer, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s. They noted: “Strong evidence shows that consumption of coffee within the moderate range (3 to 5 cups per day or up to 400 milligrams per day caffeine) is not associated with increased long-term health risks among healthy individuals.”

In addition, the committee found that 400 milligrams (mg) of coffee daily might even lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and Parkinson’s disease. They also pointed out that most Americans don’t consume 400 mg of coffee daily, but rather tend to hover around 200 mg per day.

Keep in mind, however, that when referring to a “cup” of coffee, most research considers it to be five to eight ounces with about 100 mg of caffeine. In contrast, a small cup at many coffee houses starts at 12 ounces while a large cup may hold 20-24 ounces.

Coffee Might Lower Your Risk of Chronic Disease

In addition to the news that coffee might be good for your arteries, several other studies have also yielded promising results regarding coffee and chronic disease. For instance:

n Melanoma: Drinking four cups of caffeinated coffee daily might reduce your risk of melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer.

n According to researchers, “coffee constituents suppress UVB-induced skin carcinogenesis, induce cell apoptosis, protect against oxidative stress and DNA damage, reduce inflammation in epidermal cells, and inhibit changes in DNA methylation.”

n Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer: Women who consumed more than three cups of coffee a day had a significantly lower risk of basal cell carcinoma than those who consumed less than one cup per month.

n Multiple Sclerosis: Drinking four to six cups of coffee a day is associated with a lower risk of multiple sclerosis, as is drinking a high amount of coffee over five to 10 years. According to researchers, “Caffeine has neuroprotective properties and seems to suppress the production of proinflammatory cytokines.”

n Dementia: Caffeine also promotes production of the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline, and triggers the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which activates brain stem cells to convert into new neurons, thereby improving your brain health.

n Among people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), those with higher blood levels of caffeine (due to coffee consumption) were less likely to progress to full-blown dementia. “Caffeine/coffee intake is associated with a reduced risk of dementia or delayed onset, particularly for those who already have MCI,” the researchers said.

n Parkinson’s Disease: Higher coffee and caffeine intake are associated with a lower risk of Parkinson’s disease.

Research published in the New England Journal of Medicine has even shown that coffee

consumption is inversely associated with premature death. In other words, the more coffee drank, the lower the risk of death became, including deaths from heart disease, respiratory disease, stroke, injuries and accidents, diabetes, and infections.

Why Does Coffee Give You a Boost?

You know it’s the caffeine in coffee that gives you energy, but do you know why? Caffeine provides a “lift” by blocking the normal action of adenosine. Adenosine forms from the breakdown of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the molecule that provides cellular energy.

Adenosine normally slows down your brain’s activity and induces sleepiness. Some people are caffeine sensitive and don’t tolerate it well or have problems sleeping if they have caffeine too late in the day. Actually, the best time to drink coffee may be first thing in the morning (which is when many drink it anyway), especially when combined with exercise.

Research by Ori Hofmekler, author of The Warrior Diet and Unlocking the Muscle Gene, showed coffee increases your metabolism by up to 20 percent and can be quite beneficial if consumed before exercise. A caffeine dose equivalent to two or three cups of coffee taken one hour prior to a half-hour-long workout reduced the participants’ level of perceived muscle pain. This pain reduction could allow you to push yourself just a bit harder, which is important during high intensity exercises.

A 2005 meta-analysis also concluded that caffeine can reduce your perceived level of exertion by more than 5 percent—effectively making your exercise feel “easier.” Moreover, caffeine improved exercise performance by more than 11 percent, which appears to be related to the reduction in perceived level of exertion. Research from Coventry University even found that caffeine helped offset age-related loss of muscle strength, which suggests that caffeine may help preserve your muscles as you age and reduce your risk of injuries.

Pregnant Women Should Not Drink Coffee

Despite the apparent benefits for your body, caffeine is not beneficial for your baby. Research has shown that consuming caffeine during pregnancy can result in a wide range of problems for your baby, including:

n Increased risk of miscarriagen Low birth weightn Birth defects such as cleft palaten Increased risk of Sudden Infant Death

Syndrome (SIDS)n Decreased cardiac function and heart damage

The Case for Drinking Your Coffee Black and Organic

If you are dousing your cup of Joe in creamer, non-dairy creamer, sugar, and other sweeteners and flavorings, you are missing out on the therapeutic benefits and potentially harming your health. The natural blend of polyphenol antioxidants are part of what makes coffee so healthy. However, some research suggests that adding dairy to your coffee may interfere with your body’s absorption of beneficial chlorogenic acids. Meanwhile, if you add

sugar to your coffee you’ll spike your insulin levels, which contributes to insulin resistance. If you’re interested in the health benefits, drink your coffee black, without sugar, non-dairy creamer or cream, or flavorings.

If you really can’t stand your coffee black, you could try adding non-dairy alternatives like coconut milk or a natural sweetener like stevia. As for buying organic, do so whenever possible. Coffee beans are one of the most heavily pesticides-sprayed crops. So, you should select only coffee beans that are certified organic. Remember, you will obliterate any positive effects if you consume coffee that’s been doused in pesticides or other chemicals. Whenever possible, purchase sustainable “shade-grown” coffee to help prevent the continued destruction of our tropical rain forests and the birds that inhabit them.

There are many who say shade-grown coffee tastes better as well. In addition, you’ll want to purchase whole bean coffee that smells and tastes fresh, not stale; if your coffee does not have a pleasant aroma, it is likely rancid. Grind it yourself to prevent rancidity, as pre-ground coffee may be rancid by the time you get it home. If you use a “drip” coffee maker, be sure to use non-bleached filters. The bright white ones are chlorine-bleached, and some of this chlorine will leach from the filter during the brewing process. Bleached filters are also notoriously full of dangerous disinfection byproducts, such as dioxin.

‘Which Is Healthier, Dark Roast or Light?

You probably choose your roast based on flavor, but there might be compelling health differences too. Darker roasts typically contain less caffeine than lighter roasts due to the prolonged heat breaking down more of the caffeine molecules. (Bean species also differ widely in their naturally occurring concentrations of caffeine.) Dark roast coffee, such as French or Italian Roast, or roasts used to make espresso or Turkish coffee, are typically higher in neuroprotective agents than green (unroasted) coffees. One study in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research found that dark roast coffee restored blood levels of the antioxidants vitamin E and glutathione more effectively than light roast coffee.

The dark roast also led to a significant body weight reduction in pre-obese volunteers, whereas the lighter roast did not. Other studies have shown that dark roast coffee produces more of a chemical called N-methylpyridinium, which helps prevent your stomach from producing excess acid, so darker roast coffee may be easier on your stomach than lighter roast coffee.25 That said, the process of roasting will also produce acrylamide—a toxic byproduct created when you expose a food to high heat.

Acrylamide has been associated with an increased cancer risk. From the perspective of limiting your exposure to this toxin, a light roast might be preferable. I don’t claim to have the answer here, but the evidence supporting dark roast for higher antioxidant content is quite compelling. It could be that the higher antioxidant content of a dark roasted organic coffee might outweigh the acrylamide formed during the roasting process... but, unfortunately, I have no evidence to either confirm or refute this notion at this time.

Many people don’t realize the extent to which we, as pet guardians, can create stress

in our dog. 1. Punish him for be-

having like a dog. Your canine companion is a creature of opportunity, and when you give him opportunities to “misbehave” by leaving tantalizing items within his reach, he’ll take advantage. Trans-lation: don’t leave food or scraps where he can smell or see them.

2. Don’t leave him in the bedroom alone with your slippers or socks. Insure the only opportunities you provide your dog are ones he can succeed at.

3. Tell her “no” over and over. If your dog is doing something she shouldn’t be doing, telling her “no” will probably cause her to stop the behavior temporar-ily. But, saying no to a dog without offering an alternative turns your “no” into merely an interruption, not a request or demand. Unless you show your dog what you want her to do instead of what she’s do-ing, chances are she’ll be right back doing it sooner or later.

4. Give her a variety of verbal commands for a single behavior. Many pet guardians assume their dog or cat knows English, and therefore knows that “drop it” and “leave it” mean the same thing, or that “get it” and “bring it to me” are the same. Train your dog to respond to simple, preferably single-word commands (sit, stay, come, down, pee, poop, etc.) and then use those words, and only those words, to communicate. Otherwise, you’ll create stress in your dog because she knows you want her to do something, but she doesn’t know what based on the words you’re using.

5. Tell him “it’s okay.” Many dog guardians tend to say this phrase to their pet when something decidedly not okay is about to hap-pen. For example, you’re driving

your dog to the groomer, which is a place he’s not fond of. You’ve driven him there often enough that as always, he starts to whine when the grooming shop comes into view.

And as always, you say, “it’s okay” in an effort to comfort him. The second you utter those words he knows without a doubt where he’s going, and his stress level shoots through the roof. “It’s okay” be-comes a verbal cue to panic. Instead, help your dog learn to relax and cope with anxiety-producing situations.

6. Pull his leash. A dog that has been properly trained to walk on a leash doesn’t typically do a lot of pulling, so if you feel the need to constantly yank the leash to redirect him, it’s probably time to refresh your pet’s leash manners.

7. Anticipate that your dog will naturally stop and sniff as often as pos-sible, and pull in the direction of someone or something interesting. Be kind and understanding.

8. Hold him while you hug or kiss him. Canines real-ly don’t get these human expressions of affection and can be confused by them—especially when the hugger or kisser is a relative stranger.

9. Stare at her. Most people are uncomfortable being stared at by other people, so it’s easy to imagine how unsettling it might be for your dog. The canine species views staring as a confrontational sort of a “Let’s get ready to rumble” signal, which naturally triggers a stress response. There’s no need to stare at your dog unless you’re

conditions with dirty sanitation and unclean food sources, or onto another piece of land for refores-tation projects so that WWF can put a National Park or a Nature Conservatory on the land where the indigenous peoples homes had been for over 10,000 yrs.

Most of the land that WWF takes over is rich in minerals and trees, think about that the next time you want to donate to them. Just be-cause a land is rich in minerals and

trees doesn’t mean they can come in and take over the land when it belongs to others and then throw them somewhere else in which they aren’t used to those conditions and don’t know how to live.

This doesn’t give me any comfort knowing this and support-ing Earth Hour, which actually has not made any impact on the global scale of an ecological change!!

12 Human Behaviors That Stress Dogs Outreturning her gaze.

pointing/shaking thing is a universal stress inducer for dogs (and many humans). That’s probably because it’s usually done while you’re stand-ing over your pooch in a menacing posture, or while you’re speaking in a tone of voice that signals your displeasure.

11. Tell him to “get down” when he jumps up. If like most people you use the ver-bal cue “down” to ask your dog to go from a sit to a lie-down, it’s not go-ing to work in situations where he’s jumping up on you or someone else (or a piece of furni ture) . Train him to stop jumping with the verbal command “off” or “paws

You’ll save your dog the confu-sion and stress that comes from trying to under-stand your com-mand, and you’ll potentially save yoursel f or a gues t f rom a friendly maul-ing.

12. Wake her up. Un-less there’s a pressing reason to awaken your four-legged fam-ily member from a nice snooze, try to avoid it. Being shaken or shouted awake is stressful for all of us.

Joyce and Barry Vissell

by Joyce and Barry Vissell

After 46 years of spiritual study and pract ice, Joyce and I immersing ourselves in many

forms of spirituality, I am real-izing for myself that there are ul-timately only two spiritual paths. And both are equally important!

I love the saying, “We are human beings on a spiritual journey, and we are spiritual beings on a hu-man journey.” Herein lie the two spiritual paths. These are the two ways I identify myself, one as a human being and the other as a spiritual being. One is no less than the other.

-ings on a human journey. Pearl Dorris, a simple housewife from Mt. Shasta without any degrees

spiritual teacher. They say the teacher appears when the student is ready. Joyce and I were very ready. I had just dropped out of my psychiatry residency program in 1973. I was tired of iden-tifying myself and others as just body and mind. Pearl was deeply steeped in the “I Am” work, claiming ourselves as spiritual beings. Sitting in her little living room with a small group of students, she would proclaim with her distinctive lisp, “I am that I am,” or “I am the Light.” She

while the very atmosphere in the room became charged with an invisible power. She helped us to feel ourselves as divine.

I know myself as a soul in this body, a being with a light body inhabiting this physical body. When I identify with my Higher Self, I am part of all the light and love in the universe. This spiritual

being the Divine. It gives me great joy to pour out love from my heart.

I hesitate to share this very personal spiritual practice because some might see it as egocentric or grandiose. It would be, if I held

everyone else as well. I know that we are all part of the Higher Power, like a drop of water is really no different than the ocean, like the acorn has within it the mighty oak tree.

Now for the second spiritual path, human beings on a spiritual journey. Ram Dass was another teacher who came along when we

ready we were. We wore white clothes with our prayer beads. I, in particular avoided all nega-tive feelings that would bring my energy down. I hate to admit this, but I even bought into the philosophy that sex would keep us from being truly spiritual. We were celibate for six months, until our repressed sexual energy exploded in the middle of the night, and we found ourselves waking up locked in an intense passionate em-brace of love-making. Even so, I still felt we had failed somehow on our spiritual journey.

Ram Dass saw through this spiritual dis-guise and called us “phony holy.” His work with us was to balance the human with the spiritual, to bring us back down to earth, to fully embrace our humanity and see it as just as spiritual. I had

been running away from the human part of me, and it just

I feel fully human when I am in relationship with God/Goddess as also outside of me. Though I am not a practic-

“Ishq Allah Mabud Lillah.” It means God is the nonmanifest, invisible divine love. But God is also the beloved, the one out-

side ourselves who we can love. The beloved is the energy of relationship, the path of devotion.

The path of being human on a spiritual journey is just as important to me. I love feeling like a child with powerful, loving heavenly parents who constantly have my best interest in mind and heart. I am unconditionally loved and cared for. I can completely trust my divine parents. As well, I can feel and share the pain of my humanity and pray for help.

Sometimes, in the same meditation, I will go back and forth between these two spiritual paths. One moment, I experience myself as a small child learning to trust my Heavenly Cre-ator, and the next moment I am the Heavenly Creator caring for the small child within me. To be completely honest, most of my meditation time is spent in neither of these spiritual paths. Instead, my mind simply does its mind thing, drifting about aimlessly, thinking about how I can remove the broken toilet seat with completely rusted hardware, or some other truly mundane thought. But … if I have even a moment of each spiritual path, I consider it a successful medita-tion, with its resultant peace, and my day has been blessed.

Thus, worthiness can be claimed and known in two ways. I am worthy because I am part of God, and I am worthy because I have always been worthy in the eyes of God. Same with forgiveness. Every “mistake” is seen by our Creator as a necessary part of our growth. And, as a being of light, in the highest truth of who I am, there is no need for forgiveness.

Once again, we are human beings on a spiritual journey, and spiritual beings on a hu-

and without. Only two spiritual paths. But what a great journey it is!

last time I saw my father was at my wedding. He died suddenly nine months later. We lived in different states, over 2,000 miles apart, but we had always been close in heart.

I would share my dreams with him. Early one morning I telephoned him to discuss a

story, and eventually laughing together made me feel better.

I began having exhilarating experiences of life outside my physical body. I told my dad about them, but it was hard for him to accept what he considered unreal and imaginary. Because he loved me, though, he was willing to listen.

I told him about bathing in beautiful golden light while hearing hundreds of people sing HU. And my dreams became very vivid. I would write them down when I awoke, and the more I wrote, the clearer they became, full of color and detail. I was living happily in two worlds: heaven and earth.

tactics and overcoming obstacles in the pursuit of your dreams.Strategies of Victory

Making success happen need not resemble a military campaign. Do words like “discipline,” “willpower” or “control” make you cringe? If so, use a different paradigm: think about being a good friend to yourself, and set up your life so that success can easily enter. Design an environment supportive of you and your goals.

your best times for mental focus. When your energy is low, focus on less challenging tasks. Be sure to build breaks, downtime and leisure into your schedule.Unite Head and Heart

On your path to greater levels of accom-plishment, you may encounter obstacles. In addition to outer challenges—such as a slow economy, or the fall and rise of the marketplace —your own resistance may show up. Resis-tance often means there is information missing. Even though you consciously feel motivated and committed to your goals, part of you might be pulling in a different direction. When making a plan to achieve some objective, maybe even something as simple as an exercise regime, have you ever had the experience of what many call self-sabotage? Why does that happen?

One explanation is that we have a rational as well as an emotional side, and they are both valid and important. Your logical side may be motivated to create success, while your feeling self can have a different agenda. Emotions are

ing us feedback about how to best take care of self, soul and spirit. In order to increase achievement, listen to your feeling self for crucial

I read many t imes—and believed—that love lasts forever and that Soul, our true Self, lives on after our bodies die. Within a few days, I had a dream where my dad came to me and said, “Dana everything you

Over the next year, we met many times in my dreams. Our experiences together in heaven helped me with my grief on earth. My heart learned that love lives on and has no boundaries. My dad and I were still connected.

I continue to receive guidance in my dreams, sometimes glimpsing the future, experiencing healing, and seeing past lives that help me grow spiritually. Dreams have shown me that Soul is eternal. Heaven and earth are connected, and dreams are the gateway.

AS THE WATER CRISIS in Flint deepens, it is becoming apparent that the effects of the lead-infested water are not just a health

hazard, but the situation has the potential of ruining many more lives outside of the poison issue. There is no denying that the water in Flint is undrinkable and that it is contaminated with lead and other substances, and it is clear that the government of Flint is responsible for the problem.

HOWEVER, THE CITY’S GOVERNMENT CONTINUES TO CHARGE PEOPLE FOR THE POISON WATER AND THEN THREATENING TO FORECLOSE THEIR HOME OR TAKE THEIR CHILDREN IF THEY REFUSE TO PAY.

Michigan law states that parents are neglectful if they do not have running water in their home, and if they chose not to pay for water they can’t drink anyway, then they could be guilty of child endangerment. Activists

in Flint say that some residents have already received similar threats from the government if they refuse to pay their bills!!

Flint residents have recently filed two class action lawsuits calling for all water bills since April of 2014 to be considered null and

ONE OF OUR favorite cosmic comic uncommontators,

Swami Beyondananda is coming to Santa Cruz on March 4th for a “March Forth for Bernie” event held at the Inner Light Center (details below). We caught up with Swami’s slightly-more-serious alter ego, Steve Bhaerman to ask him about Swami’s recent journeys, his political perspective in general, and his work on behalf of Bernie in particular.

Connection: So, what’s been happening in Swami’s world since we spoke with you last?

Steve: The Swami and Trudy and I have been out there in the material world, where there is plenty of material. And, the purpose of comedy—at least mine, anyway—is to turn the material of the material world into laughter that heals the heart, and frees the mind. We did a fun and successful tour of the southwest last fall, and we’re getting ready for the Midwest and East Coast this year.

Connection: I know you’ve always had an interest in politics, and you were even a political science major. . .

Steve: Yes, but let’s be clear. I never actually got to dissect a politician in poly sci lab.

Connection: Anyway, from your writings I know you have an appreciation of deep politics and evolutionary change. So, I’m curious. Why are you going so all-out for Bernie Sanders?

Steve: One of my heroes, Bucky Fuller had a saying: “Call me trim-tab.” The trim-tab is a part of the rudder of a ship that can turn the entire huge ship around. The metaphor being, sometimes something very small can make a very large impact. I see the Bernie Sanders campaign as a trim-tab, as something that has the potential to turn the ship of state in an entirely different direction.

Connection: Well, I can see that Bernie

is certainly more progressive than Hillary, but he is pretty traditional when it comes to the deeper issues that more and more of us are becoming

aware of. He favors mandatory vaccination for example, and seems pretty equivocal about GMOs.

Steve: Yes, that’s true. And ... in order for those issues to ever

get aired, there is one fundamental obstacle in the way. And, that’s the unchecked, unbalanced, unmitigated power of money to overrule the will of the people. It’s through that power of money to buy off the media and electoral politics that we have the military industrial complex, big oil, agribusiness and big pharma essentially running the show, and tolerating no opposition. Bernie’s campaign is the only one addressing that one key fundamental issue.

Connection: And, you think Bernie can win?

Steve: I think Bernie MUST win, and I think the level of disgust with politics as usual has reached such a peak—and a pique—that this is the year that something this unconventional can happen. Regardless of what happens in the short run, the Bernie movement will grow and become bigger than any candidate.

Steve Bhaerman is the alter ego of cosmic comic Swami Beyondananda, who will be performing at a benefit for Bernie Sanders, “March Forth 4 Bernie” on Friday, March 4th, 7 pm at the Inner Light Center, 5630 Soquel Drive (just west of Monterey Avenue) in Soquel. Tickets are $19 and available at [email protected]. Steve and Swami can be found online at www.wakeuplaughing.com Thank you for telling us that you read this and saw the Ad in Connection Magazine!

A METHANE LEAK IN Southern California has forced thousands of people from their homes. Although the gas first

began spewing from a leaky underground well in October, the gas company only recently identified the source of the leak.

Now, officials with the company say it could be months before the methane leak is stopped.

But what exactly caused the methane leak in the first place, and how will it affect those in the surrounding areas? Here are five things to know about the Southern California methane leak.

1.Methane is the main component of natural gas

Methane is a simple hydrocarbon made up of one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms, and is produced when microorganisms called methanogens combine carbon dioxide and oxygen. It is the main constituent in the natural gas that is used for heating and cooking in some homes.

By itself, methane is colorless and odorless. When it is processed for use in homes, an odorant is added, so that people will be able to smell it if there is a gas leak.

Scientists say that vast stores of methane are buried beneath the seafloor, locked into a cagelike crystal of water molecules, making it stable. Other huge sources of methane are the organic matter frozen into the permafrost in the Arctic.

The methane that’s leaking probably isn’t part of California’s natural reserves. Most of the methane that is used in Southern California homes actually comes from somewhere else (typically West Texas or Southern Colorado). It is transported to California via a massive network of interstate pipelines, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

2. The leak originated underground The source of the methane leak, which

began on Oct. 23, is the Aliso Canyon Gas Storage Field, the largest underground methane storage facility in the western United States. The storage facility is located in a mountain near the community of Porter Ranch.

3. It’s an environmental disaster Since October, the leak has released

150 million pounds (72,000 metric tons) of methane into the environment, according to the Environmental Defense Fund, which has tracked the leak using infrared cameras. That could be bad news for the climate. Methane is a greenhouse gas like carbon dioxide, but pound for pound, methane can be 25 times

more powerful than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the Earth’s atmosphere, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Methane that enters the atmosphere takes about 12 years to break down — it is mostly removed from the air by chemical reactions with other compounds.

All told, the current leak could be responsible for a quarter of all of the state’s methane emissions this year, and could be the worst methane leak in California’s history.

4. It’s dangerous The methane leak could also be dangerous

for peop le who live in Porter Ranch. Methane is highly flammable (not surprising, as it is used for combustion in both gas stoves and rockets).

Depending on its concentration in the air, it can also be dangerous to inhale methane fumes, because methane can occupy the same place in blood cells that oxygen normally does. Symptoms of methane exposure include headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, weakness and loss of coordination, according to the National Institutes of Health. In serious cases, people may black out or die.

More than 2,000 residents of Porter Ranch, California, have been evacuated from their homes after people complained of headaches and nosebleeds, NBC News reported. Two Los Angeles Unified School District schools have closed in response to the methane leak.

5. It could take months to fix The Southern California Gas Company has

identified the location of the leak in a well 3,000 feet (914 meters) below ground. However, they still don’t know what caused it.

To stop the leak, the gas company said it plans to drill a “relief” well at 5,000 feet (1,524 m), or below the level of the current leak, to divert the methane flow. Then, the company plans to temporarily plug the leaking well with a mixture of mud and fluids, before sealing it permanently with cement, CBS news reported.

But this will all be a tricky process, as it involves using magnetic-ranging techniques to find a 7-inch (17.8 centimeter) pipe located within 1,500 feet (457 m) of rock, while not damaging other pipes nearby, according to the Southern California Gas Company.

The workers will also have to stop their work if air concentrations of methane get too high and pose either a possibility of explosion or a health risk.

The whole process could be completed by late February or early March, the gas company said.

Facts to Know about the California Methane Leak5Facts to Know about the California Methane Leak

It could be months before the gas leak that has forced thousands from their homes in southern California is stopped

void because of the fact that the water was poisonous.

“We are seeking for the court to declare that all the bills that have been issued for usage of water invalid because the water has not been fit for its intended purpose,” said Trachelle Young, one of the attorneys bringing the lawsuit to court.

“Essentially, the residents have been getting billed for water that they cannot use. Because of that, we do not feel that that is a fair way to treat the residents,” Young added.

Recent estimates have indicated that it could take up to 15 years and over $60 million to fix the problem, and the residents will be essentially forced to live there until the problem is solved. Despite the fact that the issue is obviously the government’s responsibility, they have made it illegal for

people to sell their homes because of the fact that they are known to carry contaminated water. Meanwhile, residents are still left to purchase bottled water on their own, in addition to paying their water bill.

Although this problem is finally getting national media attention in Flint, they aren’t the only city with contaminated water supplies. In fact, a recent report published by The Guardian showed that public water supplies across the country were experiencing similar issues.

This crisis highlights the many dangers of allowing the government to maintain a monopoly on the water supply and calls attention to the fact that decentralized solutions to water distribution should be a goal that we start working towards.

Proposition 37 appears t o h a v e

failed at the ballot box in California,

according to the California Secretary of State ballot measures results. The GMO labeling ballot measure, which would have required food companies to label the GM content of foods, was defeated with the use of over $45 mil-lion in fraudulent advertising and dirty tricks funded by

• Monsanto, • PepsiCo, • Coca-Cola, • Kellogg, • General Mills, • DuPont, • Bayer and • other food and • pesticide companies.

Over the last month, this cabal of deceptive companies has funneled money into a campaign of criminal fraud which, among other crimes, fabricated a fake FDA quote and sent out mailers that fraudulently used the FDA seal. A criminal complaint has already been led with the FBI.

The “No on 37” campaign also used fabricated front groups and impersonated a police organization (among others) to send out yet more fake mailers to voters, claiming that the police oppose GMO labeling. That fraudulent claim, of course, is entirely false.Huge victory in terms of GMO awareness and grass roots support

The grassroots effort to pass Proposition 37 was supported by the efforts of millions of activists, plus financial donations from Mercola, Nature’s Path, Amy’s, Dr. Bronner and other companies. Natural News donated $10,000 to the effort and pro-vided comprehensive editorial cover-age of the grassroots effort. Click here to see a chart of who gave money to the effort (http://www.cornucopia.org/wp-content/themes/Cornuco-pia/downloads/prop37-poster.pdf).

And click here to see some of the “natural” brands that betrayed con-sumers (http://www.naturalnews.com/Infographic-Natural-Brands-Betray-Consumers.html) with the “No on 37” deception.

Those brands include: • Kashi, • Silk, • Cascadian Farm,

• Larabar and more.In many ways, the “YES on 37

Campaign” was a huge victory for awareness. The campaign organized over 10,000 volunteers in California alone and succeeded in achieving a massive social media presence.

The “YES on 37 Campaign” also forced Monsanto and the bio-tech giants to spend $45 million to defeat the measure. That’s a record expenditure by the world’s largest toxic pesticide companies to try to prevent consumers from knowing what they’re buying. Remember: GMOs are the only products that consumers accidentally purchase without knowing what they’re buying.

What’s clear from all this is that GMO labeling has a foothold in the minds of American consumers, and this effort to label GMOs is going to be repeated state after state, year after year, until victory is achieved.

The biotech industry can no longer keep its dirty little secret: There’s poison in your food, folks, and the big food producers abso-lutely do not want you to know that you’re eating it.The GMO labeling battle has only just begun

Monsanto and other companies appear to have won this showdown in California, but they are going to lose the war of deception against consum-ers. As awareness of GMOs continues to spread, people will demand honest labeling in increasing numbers.

The huge burst of awareness on Prop 37 has a lot of people asking the questions: Hey, what are GMOs? And, why aren’t they labeled on foods?

That question will ultimately spell defeat for Monsanto, Kellogg, General Mills, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and all the other evil, deceptive cor-porations who bankrolled the “No in 37” criminal fraud that deceived a majority of California voters.

Let’s discuss endorphin stimulation and weight control using heirloom chili peppers and tomatoes.

What Are Endorphins? The word “endorphin” comes

from two words, endogenous (grow-ing or produced by growth from deep tissue like roots) and morphine (that which relieves pain). Endorphins are small, protein molecules that are produced by cells in your nervous system and other parts of your body. An important role of endorphins is to work with sedative receptors that are known to relieve common pain. These analgesia-producing receptors are located in your brain, spinal cord and other nerve endings. Endorphins are not a single molecule, but actu-ally come in several forms, and can be anywhere from eighteen to five hundred times as powerful as any man-made analgesic. And, they are non-addictive.

Few people are aware of the possibilities that endorphins are natu-rally produced by a wide range of ac-tivities, a few being: meditation, deep breathing, exercise, ribald laughter and eating spicy food. Fewer still know that endorphins are actually good for health and can play a role in helping drug and alcohol abusers overcome their addiction. Endorphin Stimulation &

HeirloomsHabanero peppers and Rocoto

Peppers provide a stimulating heat and “bite” that increases the body’s production of endorphins. Many popular ethnic foods, including Tex-Mex, Mexican, Cajun, Indian, Chinese (especially Szechuan) and Thai, are renowned for their spiciness, and the

resulting endorphin rush keeps a per-son wanting more. The hotter the pep-per, the greater the ability to stimulate endorphin production; the body knows this and therefore craves it.

The capsaicinoids, which are plant compounds, create the heat in peppers when it touches your mucus membranes. When the hottest peppers of the genus capsaicin produce a sen-sation of fire in your mouth, it sends a signal to your brain which releases natural pain relievers and endorphins. It’s good to burn a little, but be careful

to do so in moderation. Interestingly, tolerance to the heat increases with use over time.

In addition to triggering endor-phins, hot peppers can lower triglycer-ides, improve circulation, reduce high blood pressure and fight potential heart disease. What a power-pack!

Heirloom tomatoes are not re-ally related to stimulating endorphins that we have been able to find in our research for this piece, but the health benefits they bring us enable the body

to function better, which may indirect-ly assist with endorphin activity. We’ll discuss that in the next section. Weight Control & Health

Benefits of HeirloomsSo we already know that pep-

pers are tasty and have the ability to aid the body in the release and stimulation of endorphins, but how do they and tomatoes promote your health through weight loss?

The biggest benefit of chili peppers in weight loss is that diges-tion is activated and can make you

feel full faster. Second, they reduce cholesterol while acting as a thinning agent helping to dissolve fibrin, which is the insoluble protein that builds up in your blood vessels that might cause blood clots. Blood flow is stimulated by the capsaicin in the pepper and improves blood circulation. Most hot peppers contain vitamin A, E, C and B complex vitamins, which play an important role in not only protecting the digestive system, but also warding

off infections. Heirloom tomatoes have a dif-

ferent set of benefits to overall health and weight loss. In the most recent arena of food and phytonutrients (sub-stances found in certain plants believed to be beneficial to human health and help prevent diseases), the hot topic is lycopene.

Lycopene is an antioxidant that fights free radicals in the body that interfere with normal cell growth that could potentially lead to cancer, premature aging and heart disease. Tomatoes are the best known source of lycopene, whose carotenoid pigment is responsible for giving them their bright red color. When it is absorbed in the stomach, lycopene is transported in the blood by lipoproteins and ac-cumulates in the liver, adrenal glands and testes. Of all of the carotenoids, tomatoes are thought to be one of the most potent antioxidants, able to fight free radicals responsible for damaging DNA and leading to the formation of cancer, particularly prostate cancer.

Tomatoes have almost no fat, making them a good food to eat if you are following a low-fat weight loss plan. Their filling fiber has natural occurring sugars, potassium, vitamin C and a small amount of protein. Additionally, the high water content

of tomatoes helps you to lose weight because you feel full and satisfied.

Summary - The moral of this story, then, is that heirloom peppers and tomatoes are superfoods that not only nurture the body, but provide it with natural means to cure, fend off and possibly prevent disease. Not only that, they provide nutrients, carote-noids, antioxidants and vitamins that enhance our bodies and well-being. Why not natural endorphin stimulation and why not weight loss through eating delicious and healthy heirlooms that we can grow for ourselves?

And finally, what a wonderful legacy of knowledge and information we can share with one another and our children. Let’s take charge of our lives and grow, eat, prepare and preserve heirloom chili peppers and tomatoes!

RUMI ON STAGE: MOTIONS OF TENDERNESSby Robert Strayer

Rumi on Stage is a theatrical production—a concert of story-telling and poetry; musicians, actors, and danc-

ers; masks and puppets; sound, light, and movement—presenting the work of the great 13th century Persian mystic Mevlana Jelalu-ddin Rumi. It is not simply a recitation or reading of his work, but a fully staged production, using the full range of the the-atrical arts to create a point of entry into the mystical/

writings conjure up for us, some eight centuries after his death.

It would be hard to over-

Rumi as a spiritual presence in the contemporary world, cutting across almost every religious boundary. The most widely read poet in the United States over the last sev-eral decades, Rumi speaks deeply to people in every spiritual tradition as well as to those more solitary sojourners forging their own distinctive paths. His timeless, universal, and inclusive vision resonates with all who long to connect with that “something more” that lies both

February evokes imagery of Hearts and Love for most…so let’s explore that a bit, shall we?

Research has deter-mined that the heart is the primary transmitter of electro-magnetic fre-quencies. It functions as the switch for the Autonomic system. What controls the heart switch between the stress/depletive mode (Sympa-thetic) and the healing/restorative mode (Parasympathetic) is the predominant EM frequency we are transmitting and receiving. If the predominant frequency is fear/

Autonomic system into the stress/depletive mode. If the predominate frequency is Joy/Love, then the switch is flipped to the healing/restorative mode.

About 90 to 95% of our thoughts and feelings are being experienced unconsciously, unless we are active-

ly practic-ing aware-n e s s o f our heart energy. In p rev ious columns, I h a v e shared a simple, yet powerfully

effective method for recognizing heart energy transmissions, and how to shift it back to Joy/Love from fear/anger. I invite you to check it out.

You may have noticed that I always reference the higher frequen-cies as “Joy/Love”, as opposed to

why I do.Based upon my research and

experiences, Joy evokes a sense of unity and completeness. Whereas Love has an interwoven frequency thread of duality and incomplete-

ness, especially from within the human/3rd dimension context.

Focusing on feeling Joy will automatically fast track your sense and experience of expanded Being-ness/Unity.

So for Heart Month, how about we all focus on feeling Joyful? Sounds like fun to me!

We are all One. When I em-brace Joy/Love, it ripples through all Consciousness, the same way it does when you choose Joy/Love.

And…thus WE create the Shift! How powerful we collectively

are when we individually shift our focus from fear to Love…from anger to Joy!Together WE create the Shift!

I invite you to share your ex-periences with our readers, please reach out to me through my web site.

She made her-se l f known shortly after entering my womb. Her

energy was that of Cas-sandra, the prophetess; and like the prophetess, her clear vision was not always well received. I felt our hearts beat together as we embarked on a deeply loving, complex and enlightening life share.

She was expressive, the soul of an artist with the sharp mind of a scientist, with humor like a female Robin Williams. From her child-hood on, she could make me laugh until my belly ached. I have so many

remembering.

found a dream I had about her. I dreamt that Sandi and I were caught in swirling surf, going under. Like a mother whale, I managed to push her to surface, but couldn’t hold my breath any longer. Then Sandi grabbed my hand and pulled me free, able to breathe, out of water into air. The dream served as meta-phor for a dance we often indulged, helping each other avoid drowning in the waves of life’s overwhelm.

She was diagnosed in her twen-ties with a rare blood condition,

Cassandra (Sandi) Cramer Burr 2/1/63-2/6/16Cassandra, Beloved

Essent ia l th rombo-cythaemia, which can e v o l v e into acute m y e l o i d leukaemia.

Treatment did not work, neither chemo at Stanford, nor can-nabis later at home.

How she han-dled her challenge was amazing—her bravery, soul growth, strength, her loving concern of others, es-pecially me and her husband, Scott.

Scott became her 24/7 caregiver, a most loving and at-tentive mate, by her side when she passed.

When I told Sandi that I was privileged to be her mother, she said, “It’s been a privilege all the way around.” Her statement was all-inclusive, and all who knew her carry a touch of her light inside.

is is a common reaction to the suggestion that canna-bis can be used as a suppository. Rectal administrations (suppositories) have an unfairly bad reputation in North America, despite the diverse benets they oer. is article aims to educate about the advantages associated with the rectal application of cannabis and provide a sim-ple set of guidelines for the eective use of suppositories.

ere are many advantages to the rectal administra-tion of cannabis not aorded by other routes. Medicine may still be administered even if the oral route is im-paired (e.g., due to vomiting, an injured jaw or throat, or gastrointestinal diculties) or disallowed due to the oral intake restrictions that are frequently required both before and aer surgery. Avoiding the gastrointestinal tract also prevents rst-pass metabolism by the stomach and liver, which break down many dierent molecules into their constituent parts (including Δ9-tetrahydro-cannabinol, otherwise known as THC), and allows the active constituents to reach the blood in much higher concentrations.

In the case of THC, the liver transforms around half of what is ingested into the signicantly more psychoac-tive metabolite 11-Hydroxy-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol. While not harmful in and of itself and potentially of therapeutic benet, this molecule causes much more intense cognitive eects than THC. Rectal administra-tion not only avoids these eects, but also allows a much greater proportion of THC to eventually reach the blood stream. is increase in overall eciency is also shown in the dierent levels of bioavailability that dierent administration routes aord, as seen in Fig. 1. Rectal administration also allows for medicine to exert eects over localized ailments (e.g., hemorrhoidal tissue, in-ammation of the rectum, or tumours in the rectal cav-ity). is form of use also has a much faster uptake than oral administration (around 10 minutes, on average) and leads to more consistent blood concentrations of the active constituents. e speed and reliability of their uptake combined with their circumvention of many of the issues surrounding both ingestion and inhalation make rectal applications an excellent addition to both new and pre-existing therapeutic regimens.

The combination of CBD and THC along with the other cannabinoids stimulates the body’s own immune response.

“We’re not just blowing smoke…”

In the case of THC, the liver transforms about half of what is ingested into a psychoactive metabolite, which for some may be too much to handle and causes much more intense cognitive effects than THC. Rectal suppositories not only avoid these effects but allow a much greater percentage of THC in the blood stream.

Through oral intake there is about 20% bio-availability as compared to rectally 50%-70% efficiency, with predictable effects even between different individuals.

The speed and reliability of their intake, combined with their ability to bypass many of the issues involving eating or smoking, make suppositories an excellent addition to both new and pre-existing therapeutic protocols.

In keeping up with my quest to share the truth about healing, I have found that canna-

bis extracts have pro-found effects in stimu-lating the body’s natural defense system. In fact, cannabis has been shown to kill cancer cells. ‘CB2 Receptors’ act like a tar-get for cannabinoids. Once they bind to the receptor, they tell the cancer cell to die, to commit suicide. Cannabis can be used as an anti-cancer medicine.
