IDC Insulation Displacement Connection
Soldering techniques were replaced by insulationpiercing connecting device technology some decadesago. This change meant that instead of following time-consuming soldering, screwing or filling procedures, the wire could simply be pressed into the displacementinsulation piercing connecting device. With thistechnology, the wire is inserted in the IDC clamp(Insulation Displacement Connection) by hand andpressed into the clamp using a simple contact tool.
The wire insulation isstripped from the insulationpiercing device where theconnection is made. DINIEC 352 describes therequirements for thissoldering-, screw- andstrip-free connection in
detail.Double IDC Contact
Distribution components are often fitted with doubleIDC contacts. The double contact allows interruption-free jumpering. This means that in addition to theexisting connection, e.g. from the subscriber to the
system, a secondconnection to a newconnecting point can alsobe established withoutinterrupting the existingconnection.
Architecture of the Distribution Components
The binary structure of the switching systems (8, 16 or32 subscribers / line card) means that some distribu-tion components also have a binary structure, e.g. 4pairs / functional element in the case of the 71 Seriesor 8 pairs / functional element in the case of the 5000Series.
The subscribers are generally connected via cablesorganized in groups of five. Accordingly, the distribu-tion components also have an n x 5 structure, e.g.5 pairs / functional element in the case of the 71 Se-ries or 10 pairs / functional element in the case of the5000 Series.
The number of system or subscriber lines to beconnected per distribution component depends mainlyon the pair count of the cables used. Most of thesubscribers in the central office are thereforeconnected to the relevant distribution componentsusing 100 or 200 wire pair cables. The same applies tothe system side, where 128 wire pair cables are used.
The above specifications have produced, for example, the 8- and 10-pair distribution components of the 5000Series with 100, 128, 200 and 512 wire pairs. Asdescribed on page 18, a distribution componentbasically consists of the mounting frame, the functionalelements and the wire guides. The wire guides ensurethat the wires are clearly organized in the distributioncomponent. Each wire pair is guided to the relevantIDC contacts through the wire guides.
The importance of having good wire and cableorganization increases as more users are connected. The jumper comb assemblies of the distributioncomponents and the jumpering loops of the distributionframes are therefore just as important to good cableorganization as the wire guides.
OvervoltageOvervoltage/Overcurrent Protection
Damage caused by overvoltage/overcurrent is one ofthe most common causes of malfunctions in communi-cation devices. Overvoltage/overcurrent can stopindividual components or even entire central officesfrom functioning. Without sufficient protection, yourdevices are exposed to a potentially costly anddangerous threat. The damage can be caused bylightning, electrostatic or electromagnetic interferenceor as a result of power lines coming into contact withcommunications lines.
Such damage can be avoided by inserting protectionmagazines in the distribution components and bygrounding the system in accordance with the relevantrequirements. In the context of telecommunications, adistinction is made between the following types ofprotection:
13Corning Cable Systems
Jumpering
All underground subscriber cables are connected tospecific distribution components in the maindistribution frame. Not every subscriber wire pair isconnected to a terminal; i.e. only those wire pairsactually being used by the subscribers are connectedto the switching system as well. Wire pairs that are notin use are only connected to the system as they areneeded.
In many cases, the switching system and maindistribution frame may not be in the same room oreven on the same floor. Given that each wire pair usedcannot be guided to the switching system over severalfloors, the required wire pairs are connected to anadditional distribution component (jumpered). In thisway, the wire pairs being used are connected in stages
Overvoltage/Excess Current Protection (5-PointProtection)
The overvoltage / overcurrent protection magazinesare fitted with 2- or 3-electrode arresters and ceramicor polymer PTCs (Positive Temperature Coefficient)(see the circuit diagram on page 30). When the nomi-nal current of the PTC is exceeded, the componentheats up and the resistance increases exponentially. The PTC therefore limits the current. The PTC coolsdown in accordance with the load and then returns toits original state. This reversible procedure can also berepeated a number of times if necessary.
The contact between the protection magazine andfunctional element is illustrated in the diagram below. In addition to the arrester, two PTCs are alsoconnected in series to the IDC contacts.
Overvoltage Protection (3-Point Protection)
The overvoltage protection magazines / plugs arefitted with 2- or 3-electrode arresters (see the circuitdiagram on page 28). In the event of an overvoltage,an arc is created in the arrester which discharges theenergy towards the ground potential. The arc is brokenwhen the voltage falls below the nominal responsedirect voltage of the arrester. This reversible procedurecan be repeated a number of times if necessary.
The contact between the protection magazine andfunctional element is illustrated in the diagram below. The arrester is connected to the IDC contacts inparallel.

to these distribution components. These connectionsare in turn connected with the switching system viacables (e.g. 128 wire pairs). The cables can then, forinstance, be guided over several floors to theswitching system without any difficulty.

Here are some examples of where distributioncomponents are used:• Main Distribution Frames• RDLU Shelters• ONU• Cross-Connection Cabinets• Distribution BoxesThe various application options are described in moredetail below.
Main Distribution Frame
TasksThe main distribution frame (MDF) is the interfacebetween the subscriber cables coming in from alldirections and the switching system. The subscribercables and the system cables are connected to themain distribution frame. The connection between bothcable sides is implemented by jumpering. In addition toterminating and organizing all of the cables, the maindistribution frame can also be used to protect peopleand the switching system against overvoltages andovercurrents. Subscriber and system cables can beboth checked and disconnected in the maindistribution frame.
Application OptionsMain distribution frames are used wherever a largenumber of subscribers need to be connected with theswitching system, for example in telecom companiesor in large buildings such as those used for banks, insurance companies and worldwide headquarters.

Distribution Rack VariantsMain distribution frames can be arranged vertically orvertically/horizontally and are available as wall-mounted or free-standing distributors.
The distributor type used depends on the number ofsubscribers that have to be connected. Corningrecommends that the vertical distributors should beused where there are less than 10,000 subscribers tobe connected. If the number of subscribers is greater,it is recommended that you use a vertical / horizontaldistributor given the increased cross-jumpering(horizontal jumpering in the rack), as cross-jumperingis possible between the horizontal distributioncomponents. This produces 12 cross-jumperingoptions in a distributor with 13 horizontals. In the caseof vertical distributors, cross-jumpering is only possibleabove and below the vertical distribution components.

Application OptionsMore and more network operators are implementingnew networking concepts which involve the use ofRDLU shelters (Remote Digital Line Unit) or ONUs(Optical Network Unit) between the subscribers andthe central office.
TaskRDLU shelters act like a small central office. They arefitted with switching and connecting equipment forcopper cables.
In ONU housings, incoming fiber optic cables becomecopper cables which are connected to the subscriber.
In the examples referred to above, connection anddistribution components for copper cables arerequired. The main distribution frame plug of the 5000Series offers quick connection options which offermany benefits. The components of the 5000 Seriescan be connected to the switching system quickly anddirectly using connectorized cables. The quickconnection options available with the 5000 Series cansave the user a great deal of time and money.
Some shelter or ONU housings only have a very smallamount of space for housing the connection anddistribution equipment. The 1000RT Series (RemoteTechnology) is ideal for use in such cases. The 8- and10-pair distribution components of the 1000RT Seriesoffer a high IDC contact density, which allows a largenumber of subscribers to be connected in the smallestof spaces.
A further advantage offered by these two distributionseries is cable management. In the 1000RT Series, forexample, the wires can be guided to the IDC contactsfrom the left, right or rear through wire guides. Themounting frames in which the functional elements sitcan be moved along the mounting rail. In this way youcan select the optimum wiring position for mounting. The distributor components can be moved to thedesired position in the shelter or ONU housing afterwiring.
The flexibility of being able to customize your wiringand change the position of the distribution elements inthe housing makes the 1000RT Series easy to mountand a great space saver.

Cross-Connection Cabinets
Application OptionsThe number of wire pairs to be distributed from thecentral office to the subscriber is constantly decrea-sing. A larger number of multi-core cables lead out ofthe central office. These multi-core cables must bedistributed to the subscribers. A cross-conbnectioncabinet which has, for example, enough space toconnect approx. 1,200 wire pairs, is required here.Connection and distribution strips which distribute thecables are installed in the cross-connection cabinet.
Task10-pair connection and distribution strips, e.g. those ofthe 1001/2001 Series, are generally used in the cross-connection cabinet. These strips are suitable for useoutdoors. The subscriber cables are connected in thecross-connection cabinet and then distributed to thesubscribers in the buildings. At this point in the networkit is possible to implement further protection, testingand jumpering devices as required. The cross-connection cabinet can therefore be considered as asmall main distribution frame on the subscriber side.
Distribution Boxes
Application OptionsThe subscriber cables are led to the subscriber fromthe cable distribution box. This is the last distribution tothe terminals. Given that only a small number of wirepairs are distributed here, the use of large distributioncomponents (suitable for in excess of 100 wire pairs)is not necessary in this case. Distribution strips, e.g.the 10-pair strips of the 1001/2001 Series, are requiredin such cases. These strips are installed in distributionboxes made of metal (indoors) or plastic (outdoors),depending on the installation location.
TaskThe task of the strips in the distribution boxes is similarto that of the strips in the cross-connection cabinet.

Overvoltage Protection Magazine (3-Point Protec-tion) with 3-Electrode Arrester and GroundingShort-Circuit Spring
Overvoltage Protection Magazine (3-Point Protec-tion) with 2-Electrode Arrester and Hot Melt
$$ %&'
Introduction
The effect of electromagnetic fields and discharges(thunderstorms) or interference from adjacent powerlines can lead to overvoltages or overcurrent intelecommunication cables. To exclude the associatedrisks to people and systems, the effects of theseovervoltages and overcurrents must be limited to safevalues. This is done using overvoltage and overcurrentprotection modules.
Overvoltage Protection (3-Point Protection)
The overvoltage protection magazines are fitted with3- or 2-electrode arresters. The arresters act asvoltage-dependent switches. As soon as the voltageon the arrester exceeds the specified nominalresponse voltage, this overvoltage is dischargedtowards ground potential within nanoseconds.
One 3-electrode arrester or two 2-electrode arrestersare installed in the protection magazine for each wirepair. The grounding short-circuit spring or hot meltshort-circuit the electrodes mechanically with theground potential in the event of overheating. Allprotection magazines can be supplied without thermalshort-circuit springs or hot melts on request.
For detailed information on protection methods incommunications technology, refer to the "Overvol-tage and Overcurrent in TelecommunicationNetworks" (Order No. A45050-W3123-D7-X-7600).

Overvoltage / Overcurrent Protection(5-Point Protection)
Overvoltage / overcurrent protection is implementedusing arresters and PTCs (Positive TemperatureCoefficient). The PTCs act as current-dependentswitches. As soon as the current on the PTC exceedsthe nominal current, the PTC blocks the line so that nocurrent can flow. Once the value falls below thenominal current, the resistance of the PTC falls andthe current can flow again. The protector magazinescan be supplied with ceramic or polymer PTCs.
All protection magazines can also be supplied withoutshort-circuit springs or hot melts on request.

Connectorized Cables with MDF Plugs
The distribution components of the 5000 Series can beconnected quickly and easily using connectorizedcables fitted with MDF plugs. Together with the methodof connecting the cables using the termination tool(conventional method), this connection method savesan enormous amount of time and is extremelyeconomical. There is no need to check the connection,as connectorized cables with MDF plugs are 100%tested. This provides yet another cost saving.
( )*+,-%+"
Using Connectorized System Cables
PABX MDF Cable
Different cables are used for different applications.Between a PABX (e.g. HICOM) and a main distribu-tion frame, for example, 16- or 24-pair cables areused. These cables are connectorized on one end withthe PABX plug and with 2 or 3 MDF plugs on the other.
Telecom MDF Cable
Connectorized cables are also available for connec-ting a telecom company switching system with the5000 Series distribution system. 16- and 64-pair cab-les are preferred in this case.
Connectorized System Cables in the RDLU Shelter
Switching and termination systems are combined inthe smallest possible space in RDLU shelters. It isadvisable here to connect the switching systems to thetermination systems (distribution components of the5000 Series) using connectorized cables. Given theclose proximity of the termination systems to theswitching systems and the small number ofsubscribers to be connected, the connectorized cablescan all be of the same length.
Connectorized Subscriber Cables
Connectorized cables can be used in both binary anddecimal formations. This means, for example, that 10-or 100-pair cables can be supplied with one or 10 MDFplugs. These cables can be connected to the 10-pairdistribution components of the 5000 Series. The openend of the cable is then spliced in a closure, forexample.
Connectorized cables with MDF plugs can be ordereddirectly. However, it is also possible to connect theplugs to the cable on-site using a termination tool forMDF plugs (page 37).

World-wide telecommunication networks have to beadapted to the increasing technical challenges causedby the rising telephone calls, intensified datacommunication, as well as higher demands for transferquality and security.Increasing telephone company competition, causinglower charges, internet applications and the rapidlyrising use in mobile communications are the mainreasons for this development. The answer lies in decentralizing network compo-nents, like DLU Shelters and Optical Network Units(ONU), which use flexible, adaptable access techni-ques and which move with the exchange, closer tothe customer. Thereby obtaining a fast and economicalincrease in performance of telecommunicationnetworks.
Corning has optimally prepared for this eventuality withthe new 1000RT Series Distribution System. The 1000RT Series is specially designed for insertionin ONU’s, Shelters and other peripheral units. The highly compacted Distribution Components canbe configured and pre-adjusted according to therespected applications. These distribution blocks forthe system and subscriber side can be quickly andsimply installed into the frames of ONUs and Shelters.Even the application of pre-wired units is possible.

Overview
ADSL systems enable the simultaneous transfer oflanguage and high bandwith data over the telephonewires, which are available in most residential andbusiness building.ADSL splitters are used for the separation of thefrequency bands, in which the voice and data signalsare transferred. They prevent the signals interferingwith each other and are therefore a substantialconstituent of these systems.
Corning Cable Systems xDSL POTS Splitters arequalified for Interoperability with leading DSLAM (ATU-C) and CPE modem (ATU-R) suppliers.
Corning is the world-wide leader of passive tele-communications products. We are moving forward inproviding more solutions for xDSL technologies usinghigh-speed Internet access. We have the knowledge, expertise and experience in the telecommunicationindustry. We have provided over 800,000 xDSL POTSSplitters and 1.5 million xDSL Distributed Microfilters, both central office / remote terminal and the customerpremises applications, and VDSL splitters since 1997.

Characteristics
Various distribution frames have been developed toenhance the organization of distribution components. These components can be classified as follows:
• Vertical wall-mounted distribution frames• Vertical stand-alone distribution frames• Vertical/horizontal wall-mounted distribution frames• Vertical/horizontal stand-alone distribution frames
A corresponding distribution frame is available for eachdistributor type. The width of the distributioncomponents and the distance between the vertical andhorizontal mounting frame bars in the frame are usedto determine in which distribution frame the distributorcan be installed. Distribution frames with a wide space(e.g. 250 mm) between the vertical mounting frame
bars can be equipped with any distributor type. Distri-bution frames with less space (e.g. 180 mm) betweenthe vertical mounting frame bars can only accommo-date the smaller distributor components of the 71Series. However, the required distance, e.g. for the5000 Series, can be achieved using adapter bars.
Application Options
Distribution frames with the corresponding distributioncomponents can be used:
• Where distribution components are installed indedicated rooms, e.g. in public and private centraloffices
93Corning Cable Systems
Characteristics
Distribution components can also be organized indistribution cabinets and enclosures. These are manufactured from:• Sheet steel• Plastic
Sheet steel distribution cabinets and enclosures havethe following characteristics:• Lockable door/hood (2 mm steel plate)• IP 55 protection• Painted in RAL 7032 structure
The plastic distribution boxes have the followingcharacteristics:• Lockable door/hood made from GF polycarbonate• IP 64 protection• RAL 7032 paint
Application Options
Lockable distribution cabinets and enclosures are idealfor smaller-scale applications or where a specific roomcannot be set aside for distribution technology. Thismay apply, for example, to:• Smaller companies• Larger houses
For external installation, the 1001/2001 Series stripsare installed in plastic distribution boxes. These boxescan be mounted, for example:• On poles• On walls

Training: expertise for your personnel
Total solutions are becoming ever more important forcommunication networks. Of particular importance inthis context are solutions for local networks (LANs) foruse on customer premises, and in the carrier area(e.g. telecommunication, CATV IP net-works) becausethe future lies in the integration of speech, image anddata.
At the same time, as world-spanning informationinfrastructure grows, also the quality requirements tobe met by networked communication solutions aregrowing. This demands knowledge – knowledge thatwe can pass on to you.
No-one can do everything –but everything can be learned
Techniques and products are subject to constantchange. This makes it essential to have staff trained tothe highest levels, who know how to utilize technicalprogress to your advantage. This can only beachieved by continuous training.
Knowledge is precious –which is why we pass it on
As a leading manufacturer of communication cables, cable accessories and networks we are working withour customers to build communication bridges for the21st century.
We realize that the planning, installation andmaintenance of cable systems involvescomprehensive knowledge – something we want toshare with you as part of a genuine partnership.
We do the training – you get the profit
Our worldwide knowledge in cable and networktechnology is channeled into our Training Center. Onthe basis of this knowledge, we develop diverseseminars for your staff.
Our training is aimed at all those who set up or operatecarrier or customer premise cable networks.
By undertaking training before starting on a project youwill avoid costly installation errors, and will put in placea critical prerequisite for the successfulimplementation of your project.
Practical orientation, not theoretical dreams
The balance is critical: theory is necessary, butpracticality dictates what must be done. From theirmany years of practical experience, our trainers knowwhich knowledge and skills are required for each task, and they are in constant contact with development, sales and projects engineering at Corning
We offer many different courses on our products, fiber optic cable splicing and measurement
techniques. For information about current coursesand dates please contact your local sales
