Connecting to Tagsys RFID – Troubleshooting Fourth draft

Under normal circumstances the wireless network connection to the Tagsys RFID unit from the laptop PC is established automatically, shortly after the equipment is turned on. In case that this connection is not established automatically there is a number of things to check… This document is a step-by-step guide for troubleshooting connection problems. These are the steps we will go through… We will make sure that: - The Tagsys RFID unit is equipped with a fully charged battery - The Tagsys RFID unit is turned ON - The Laptop PC has a D-Link USB network adapter attached - The D-Link wireless network adapter is visible to Windows - The icon for the D-Link wireless network adapter is visible in the Windows notification area - The D-Link wireless network is setup with the correct fixed IP address - There is a correctly setup network profile for the Tagsys RFID connection - The network profile is activated

1) Make sure the Tagsys RFID unit is turned on.

If the unit does not turn on - or - if the green lamp is flashing, you need to fully recharge the battery first.

Page 3: Connecting to Tagsys RFID Troubleshooting

3

2) Make sure that the D-Link USB wireless network adapter is connected to the laptop PC.

The D-Link adapter is used for the wireless network connection to the Tagsys RFID unit. The laptop PC also has a build-in wireless network adapter but this is normally used for internet connection and for connection to the library management system.

3) Make sure that the D-Link adapter is visible to Windows. 3a) Open the Windows START-menu, right-click on My Computer and select Properties.

Page 5: Connecting to Tagsys RFID Troubleshooting

5

3b) Open the Device Manager.

Page 6: Connecting to Tagsys RFID Troubleshooting

6

3c) Open Network Adapters by clicking the arrow >

Page 7: Connecting to Tagsys RFID Troubleshooting

7

3d) Locate the D-Link DWA-131 Adapter…

If you see the D-Link DWA-131 Adapter in the Network Adapters section as shown above, then continue to step 4) on page 10.

Page 8: Connecting to Tagsys RFID Troubleshooting

8

If you do not see the D-Link DWA-131 Adapter in the Network Adapters section, then: 3e) Reconnect/Move the D-Link adapter to another USB port on the laptop PC. It may happen that Windows somehow loses the connection to an attached USB device. If this happens, you need to help Windows rediscover the device, by disconnecting it and then reconnect it again, if possible to another USB port.

- Pull out the D-Link adapter from the USB port. - Wait for at least 5 seconds! - Plug the adapter into another USB port on the laptop PC. If you don’t have other unused USB ports, then simply plug the D-Link adapter back into the same USB port again.

Page 9: Connecting to Tagsys RFID Troubleshooting

9

- Watch the Device Manager window and wait for the D-Link adapter to appear in the Network Adapters section, as shown on page 7. If the adapter appears now, as shown on page 7, then continue to step 4) on page 10. If the D-Link adapter never appears - or - if it appears as an unknown device or simply a “11n Adapter”, then you need to install/reinstall the device driver for the D-Link adapter: see appendix A. Example of a missing device driver:

10

4) Make sure the DWA-131 icon is visible in the Windows notification area (lower right-hand corner of the desktop). The icon looks like a little 4-step staircase.

If this icon is white (as in the example above) then there is nothing connected via the D-Link DWA-131. If the icon is green it means that a connection exists. As in the example above, you may also see another similar icon, like a little 5-step staircase, but this one is for the build-in wireless network inside the laptop PC. But for now it’s not important if this other icon is shown... If the DWA-131 icon is visible then continue to step 5 on page 13.

Page 11: Connecting to Tagsys RFID Troubleshooting

11

If the DWA-131 icon is not visible then: 4a) Click the up-arrow in the notification area and select Customize…

Page 12: Connecting to Tagsys RFID Troubleshooting

12

4b) Scroll the list, locate the D-Link WLAN Application and set it to “Show icon and notifications”.

4c) Click the [OK] button The D-Link DWA-131 icon will now be visible in the notification area, as shown in page 10.

Page 13: Connecting to Tagsys RFID Troubleshooting

13

5) Make sure that the D-Link DWA-131 wireless network is using a fixed IP address of 192.168.0.10. On rare occations Windows may lose the IP settings for this D-Link DWA-131 network.

5a) Open the START-menu, type ncpa.cpl in the search box and press Enter.

Page 14: Connecting to Tagsys RFID Troubleshooting

14

A new window opens with a list of all the network connections. 5b) Locate the D-Link DWA-131 wireless network…

Page 15: Connecting to Tagsys RFID Troubleshooting

15

5c) Right-click on the D-Link DWA-131 wireless network and select Properties…

Page 16: Connecting to Tagsys RFID Troubleshooting

16

5d) In the network properties window, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click [Properties]

Page 17: Connecting to Tagsys RFID Troubleshooting

17

5e) The TCP/IP properties window opens… Make sure that you have the following settings (correct them if needed): - “Use the following IP address” must be selected - The IP address must be set to: 192.168.0.10 - The Subnet Mask must be set to: 255.255.255.0 - The other fields should remain empty.

5f) Click the [OK] button to save any changes you made and then close all open windows!

Page 18: Connecting to Tagsys RFID Troubleshooting

18

6) Make sure you have a network profile for the Tagsys RFID connection. A network profile holds the settings for this particular connection regarding the network name, network type and what type of security is used (if any). 6a) Double-click on the D-Link DWA icon in the notification area.

This will open the D-Link Wireless Connection Manager program window.

Page 19: Connecting to Tagsys RFID Troubleshooting

19

In the D-Link Wireless Connection Manager program window, you will see a list of any wireless networks that are visible to Windows. The list may be empty.

Please notice the status area in the top of the window. In the example above there is no connection (“disconnected”).

We need to make sure that we have a network profile for the connection to the Tagsys RFID unit. 6b) Click on the [My Wireless Networks ] button.

Page 21: Connecting to Tagsys RFID Troubleshooting

21

6c) In the My Wireless Networks window you should see the network profile for the connection to the Tagsys RFID. The network profile is named “TAGSYSRFID – TAGSYSRFID” (note: the name must be in CAPITAL letters!). It should look exactly like this:

Page 22: Connecting to Tagsys RFID Troubleshooting

22

If you see the “TAGSYSRFID – TAGSYSRFID” profile in the window then proceed to step 6g on page 24. If you do not see the “TAGSYSRFID – TAGSYSRFID” profile in the window then you need to create it: 6d) Create a network profile for the Tagsys RFID connection - Click the [New] button.

Page 23: Connecting to Tagsys RFID Troubleshooting

7b) Once the connection is established you can start using the InventoryReader program! And remember: You do not have to go through all of these steps every time you need to use the BiblioWand! This guide is only a troubleshooting guide for the situations when the connection to the Tagsys RFID unit, for any reason, does not establish automatically. Still missing in this draft: - appendix A – how to (re)install a device driver for the D-Link adapter. - appendix B – It still doesn’t work. Now what?
