03PRESIDENT’S MessageThis year has presented many challenges for
business in the Illawarra, who have continued
to operate in the face of patchy economic
conditions. The Illawarra Business Chamber (IBC)
has been kept busy as we seek to support the
interest of business in the Illawarra. Key issues
covered include the State and Local Government
Elections, the carbon tax and the impacts of the
GFC on manufacturing in our region.
It was pleasing to see high levels of member
engagement at the many functions we
ran throughout the year. As always, we
are constantly working on our events to
ensure they remain relevant and engaging
for members and sponsors/promotional
partners. I would like to thank our sponsors
and promotional partners for their support
throughout the year, without which we could
not provide these high level quality events.
This year we have continued to develop
our products and services for members and
ensure the IBC has a voice in key state-
wide business issues. In regard to this, many
ideas put forward in the IBC Policy Paper
“10 Big Ideas to Grow the Illawarra” have
either been considered or adopted by the
NSW Government. That said, there is still a
lot of work to be done for the Illawarra and
we will continue to work with our elected
representatives to bring more of our ideas to
fruition. Similarly, the IBC has been engaged
with the broader chamber movement to voice
business concerns with the carbon tax, with
two IBC Board Members participating in the
NSWBC’s Carbon Tax taskforce.
After another busy year at the IBC, I would
like to thank all the staff for their efforts
in delivering a great service to members. I
would also like to thank all of our directors
for their efforts in driving the strategy of the
organisation, which I am confident, will go
from strength to strength in the years to come.

for your ongoing support in what has been a
tough year for business in the Illawarra

CEO’SMessageI am pleased to report that the 2010/11
Financial Year saw the Illawarra Business
Chamber again make a significant contribution
to supporting business in the Illawarra. The
Business Chamber continued to focus firmly on
projects and policies that supported business
and economic development in the region as well
as activities to assist and connect our members.
During the year, elections occurred at the
Federal and State levels and the Illawarra
Business Chamber took a lead role to ensure a
business voice was heard and that important
priorities for the region were at the forefront of
all candidate’s minds.
This was an important activity, with both levels
of government focussed on reducing budget
deficits and paying back debt accumulated from
the stimulus activities associated with the GFC.
The launch of the 10 Big Ideas to grow the
Illawarra made a significant contribution to the
policy debate in the region. As we said in the
report, the Illawarra needs a cohesive vision
and co-ordinated regional plan supported by
the funding of key infrastructure projects to
stimulate and guide the region’s future growth.
This has never been more important as the
region moves through a phase in the economic
cycle of hesitant and uneven recovery.
Our ability to connect members and their
product offerings to other businesses remains
one of the Business Chamber’s strengths. In
particular, our event workshops and forums
remain a valuable way to stay connected in the
face of such a challenging business environment.
As always, I am amazed by the effort and
commitment of the IBC members, staff, Directors
and its partners to ensuring we are open for
business in the Illawarra. I thank you for your
ongoing commitment to and support of the
Chamber movement.
With the ongoing support of our corporate
partners we have worked together to provide
solutions to member problems as well as
opportunities to share knowledge and key
insights - a key aspect to remaining competitive
in tight market conditions.
There are common threads in the literature
about what is likely to shape our future business
environment in the Illawarra. More intensified
competition, continuing high Australian dollar,
the growing importance of a low carbon
economy, changing skill needs and an increased
need to be collaborative and to be connected.
I believe, in the face of these issues, that the
Illawarra Business Chamber has the “know how”
and “know who” to assist members to make the
most of opportunities that will be present in
2011/12.

IBCCOnneCtIOnsThe IBC has had another great year with many
members engaging in a variety of our most
popular events such as Business After hours, Q&A
Business Expo and of course the Integral Energy
Business Awards. The team has also expanded the
events program to include more opportunities for
education and networking at a range of events
including CEO forums, targeted workshops &
seminars and additional executive lunches.
Business after HoursBusiness After hours (BAh) is one of the
Illawarra’s largest networking events and
continues to add value to the business
community by providing opportunities for
members to connect and build relationships with
like-minded business people.
It provides host organisations a variety of
opportunities for promotion by using the event
to launch new products or branding and to gain
exposure in the community.

a volunteer partner in the “Tri The Gong” event
held in December 2010. The event proved to
be a great success for Wollongong and an ideal
opportunity for IBC and member businesses
to enjoy the atmosphere of Wollongong
harbour. Staff and members both participated
in the event and also used the opportunity for
networking purposes.
Integral energy Business awardsThe 2010 Integral Energy Business Awards
were a celebration of success in business
across the Illawarra. 1030 attendees were
at the event to hear the announcement of
the Award winners across 19 categories.
Congratulations to all businesses that
entered, reached finalist status and
of course to our winners. Winner of
the Business of the Year 2010 went to
Peoplecare, who also took out several
other Awards on the night.
The crowd were engaged by fantastic
live entertainment including a magician,
soloist & band at the gala event. We would
like to thank all sponsors and judges for
their support in helping us deliver another
successful event.

Q&a Business expoIBC hosted the Q&A Business Expo on 24 June
2011 at Novotel Wollongong Northbeach.
This year the Business Expo was a large event
comprising:
> 16 Workshops
> 51 Booth Exhibitors
Approximately 1,500 people attended on the day.
The Q&A Business Expo was themed in 2011 with
Workshops divided into three streams:
> People and Culture
> Technology
> Business Process
Exhibitors were also placed according to themes
including:
> Education, community, health and well being
> Marketing, media and events
> Technology
> Professional services and products
There were more exhibitors at the Expo this year
compared to 2010.
Other events on the day included the
Commonwealth Bank sponsored executive lunch,
with guest speaker Michael Pascoe. The event
was sold out and all present were impressed by
the content & calibre of this presentation.
The day concluded with the Telstra Business After
hours, with almost 400 attendees enjoying a
presentation from Deena Shiff, Group Manager of
Telstra Business.

Lunches and Workshops During the 2010/2011 period, the IBC was host
to many successful Executive lunches held
across the Illawarra. These lunches included:
> A Federal Budget lunch co-hosted by IRIS and
KPMG which attracted over 250 attendees. A
key feature was a panel style discussion with
the four speakers.
> Eric Roozendaal, Treasurer, and Mike Baird,
Shadow Treasurer, spoke on topics such as tax,
infrastructure and regulatory reform to over
240 Illawarra professionals during an Executive
lunch held in October 2010.
> The June executive lunch hosted by
Commonwealth Bank with guest speaker
Michael Pascoe. This lunch was held in
conjunction with the Q&A Expo. The event
was sold out with many impressed by the
fantastic content presented.
The IBC always welcome feedback on our
events. Predominant comments we receive
praise the interesting topics and fantastic
networking opportunities provided to members.
The team look forward to hosting many more
successful events in the future.

BUSINESS LeadersHIPOver the past 12 months the Illawarra Business
Chamber’s policy agenda has been dominated
by the issue of leadership, in particular political
leadership.
Elections in NSW, Wollongong and Shellharbour
have provided opportunities for the IBC to talk
to political leaders about the importance of
creating a positive business environment in the
Illawarra.
The release of 10 Big Ideas to Grow the
Illawarra in late 2010 outlined the IBC’s
blueprint for the future of the region. The
document featured many practical solutions for
prospective candidates to consider. The ideas
were aimed at tackling the region’s challenges
across a range of issues such as transport,
planning, health, education, economic
development, community accountability and
tax policy. It formed part of a major state-wide
program, NSW Deserves Better, across the
Chamber movement and was largely embraced
by most local candidates and parties.
The impending election in Wollongong and
Shellharbour provided an opportunity for the
IBC to also focus on local government issues.
The IBC released a position paper, Opportunities
for a New Era, designed to help local Councillor
and Lord Mayoral candidates to understand the
importance of delivering a region that is open
for business.
As well as these major policy position papers,
the IBC has also been lobbying in a range of
areas on your behalf to make running your
business easier.

PrOjeCtThe Illawarra Industry Apprenticeship Project continued
to make a significant contribution in 2010/2011 by
addressing skill shortage challenges in our region and
the very high rate of youth, mature age and Indigenous
unemployment. Acting as a major catalyst to educate,
re-engage and assist employers in the provision of trade
training, we create pathways into apprenticeships for
eager job candidates.
The success of the Apprenticeship Project continued
with over 100 apprentices/trainees signed as a result of
this initiative plus outstanding success of the Kickstart
program, with targets well exceeded in up-skilling job
seekers and subsequent securing of apprenticeships.
Providing job candidates with simple tools that assist
them in applying, preparing and securing
apprenticeship vacancies has resulted in a steady
increase of placements.
Promoting free assistance available to all SME’s, including
recruitment, advice on incentives, signups and training
plans, has dramatically reduced the time and spend on
recruiting practices. This allows employer’s to focus on
running their business.
Results are also reflected with the project being awarded
2010 Finalist in The Employment and Training category
for the Regional Achievement and Community Awards.

Kids Fund relies heavily on funds raised at the Bandage Bear Benefi t Night, this year the night raised approximately $150,000.
Kids Fund helps Illawarra children with special needs and signifi cant disabilities by providing essential aids and equipment.
Kids Fund is generated entirely by the community and receives no government assistance.
It is open to children 18 and under in the Wollongong, Kiama and Shellharbour local council areas.
