Introduction to the course

• Problem: Active tectonic processes are those that occur over timescales of interest to society. Their study builds fundamental knowledge about the underlying phenomena (how the Earth works) and can be applied to anticipate hazards

• Tools: We must characterize the elements of the system of processes at the appropriate temporal and spatial scales in spite of the incomplete geological record.

• Results: Increase knowledge of underlying processes and help to fill your active tectonic toolbox. No one tool or dataset is sufficient for an integrated understanding.
