THERE WASNT A CLOUD IN THE SKY as Saturday dawned and the sun began casting its benevolent warmth upon the morning. Unlike the last two years which were threatened by cold, blustery wind and rain, THIS time promised to be a perfect day for HarvestFest and Mother Nature cer- tainly delivered in full on that promise! Hosted every year by the Jocelyn Recreation Committee on the Labour Day weekend, HarvestFest is considered by all to mark the unofficial end of summer, the be- ginning of another school year and the return of early autumn with its cooler, drier tempera- tures, not to mention its caval- cade of amazing colours on the trees. For others less poetic in their attitudes, it still marks the last ‘big’ event until Thanksgiving and Christmas. The parking lot at the Jocelyn Cen- tennial Grounds was already close to full and people were strolling cheer- fully throughout the grounds as we drove in at 12:30 pm. Not surpris- ingly, the folks were drawn to the vicinity of the food booths, the stage and, of course, the field full of ven- dors, selling items ranging from hand knitting, alpaca products, pre- serves, jewellery, quilting plus many other items. A Quick Refresher on School Bus Safety.With thanks to the Ontario Provincial Police

ONTARIO LAW REQUIRES MOTORISTS traveling in both directions to stop their ve-

hicle when approaching a stopped school bus with its upper lights flashing. When meet-

ing a school bus in oncoming traffic, you must stop far enough away to allow students

to cross the road well ahead of the bus bumper. Remain stopped until the school bus

begins to move, and the upper red lights have stopped flashing. This law applies on

highways, city streets and country roads regardless of the posted speed limit, at any time

of day, and every day of the week. School buses are also required to stop at railway

crossings under the Highway Traffic Act. And kids, here are some important safety tips

to remember:

Never run to the bus or away from it; •

The “danger zone” is anywhere close enough to the bus that you can touch it. If•you’re that close, the bus driver can’t see you;

When the bus arrives, wait until it has•come to a complete stop. The stop armwill be out and the red lights will be flash-ing. Always watch for traffic in both direc-tions if you are crossing the road;

If you drop something near the bus, don’t•stop to pick it up. Tell the driver or an-other adult.

You don’t take the school bus? You still need toremember:

Always walk on a sidewalk if available. If•

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY FOR HARVESTFEST! First off, Iwould like to thank the organizers of this event for allowingus to sell memberships and to make our draws on site onceagain. I would also like to thank board member Janet Calla-han who graciously volunteered her time to sell membershipswhile I stayed at the museum and entertained our visitors.

So without delay here are the winners of the “members onlydraw”

$500 cash donated by the Matthews Family - Brian Read•and Ruth Galinis

$300 cash donated by Algoma Financial Group - Ger-•maine Tayler

$100 Fuel Card donated by New North Fuels - Ted Alle-•way

Congratulations to these winners and thank you to all whopurchased a membership this year. Thanks you as well tothese generous individuals/organizations for their donations.

Our ‘What is it?’ artifact this year was pulled out of the jar aswe had a few correct guesses. It was won by Marvyn McKay.He won a $40 gift card donated by Hess Jewellers for guessingthat it was a cuspidor or spittoon. Want to know an interest-ing few tidbits about a spittoon? The use of a spittoon wasconsidered an advance of public manners and health. Theywere intended to replace spitting on floors, streets and side-walks. Then, in 1918 after a flu epidemic, both hygiene andetiquette advocates began to discourage public use of thespittoon and its usage then began to decline. Chewing gumstarted to replace chewing tobacco and cigarettes were con-sidered more hygienic than the spit-inducing tobacco. Howtimes change…isn’t history fascinating?

As they head back to school this week, I would like to takethis opportunity to thank the summer students who workedat the museum this year: Hailey Szyska, Kyle Gauthier andLiam Murdock. These students have helped me immenselyover the summer with many projects and endured the ex-treme heat, and for that I would like to publically thank themand wish them well in their upcoming year at school.

The museum is still open, the weather is grand, fall is myfavourite season, so why not come over one last time beforewe close, which will be happening very soon.
