food vendors serving up pulled pork and hot dogs, among other things for just a few tickets.

After the parade, the streets quickly filled with hundreds of people trying their luck with the games of chance in hopes of a huge stuffed animal or a crown. The dunk tank was quite popular, with long lines of fireballers aiming at the target, eager to drench someone.

Boats Zoom Through Hilton Beach & Rich-ards Landing

You had to be quick to see the boats participating in the Can-Am Poker Run that made a couple stops around the island this past weekend. With the top speed being reported at 224mph, they were a little ahead of schedule this year. I suppose that’s what happens when you travel so fast.

For those like us who had no idea how the poker run works, here’s what happens: the boats left Sault Ste Marie for Richards Landing, Hilton Beach, Thessalon and Drummond Island. At each location, participants grab a playing card in a sealed envelope. When they return to Sault Ste Marie, the best poker hand wins. Despite the fact most of the spectators were there for the speed, speed had no barring on the winner. More than 20 boats participated in the event, with people from all over North America competing for over $10,000 in cash and other prizes. On St. Joseph Island alone, 100s of people watched from Hilton Beach, Richards Landing and along the bridge.

If you missed it this year, you might want to remember to go a bit early next year, just in case.

Citizen Science on St. Joseph Island

Have you ever seen a cool bird, photographed a rare plant or come across a species that you cannot identify? If so, you should consider becoming a citizen scientist!

For those of you who are interested in birds, eBird.org is the website for you. This easy to use web-site allows you to enter all the birds you see for each location that you visit. The benefit to the users is that will keep track of your life list for you and you can see where other birds have been seen, making it easier to track down those birds you still need for your life list. St. Joseph Island has some fantastic places to find birds, so log on to eBird and find them!

If you are a general naturalist and enjoy all plants and wildlife, you should try iNaturalist.org. This website allows you to enter sightings of any living species you might find. A photo will need to be added to each submission though in order for it to be confirmed and used for research. Got a photo but do not know what it is? iNaturalist is perfect for you then because you can submit it and others will identify it for you.

There are many other great websites of there as well for submitting your data. eButterfly.org is very similar to eBird, but, as the name suggests, it keeps track of butterflies. Bird Studies Canada has a number of great citizen science programs, such as Nocturnal Owl Surveys, Canadian Lakes Loon Surveys, the Great Backyard Bird Count, and Christmas Bird Counts. They even have a Marsh Monitoring Program, which includes amphibians. Speaking of amphibians, Ontario Nature run the Ontario Reptile and Amphibian Atlas Program where you can enter your snake, turtle, frog, and salamander sightings! Scientists and conservationists use the data sub-mitted to these websites all the time. It can help them track migration patterns, population levels, and other important data sets that can help them make conclusions and decisions in their work. Many of programs have apps available for your phones as well, making it that much easier to sub-mit your data.

Not everyone can be a scientist, but everyone can be a citizen scientist!

Busy Long Weekend in the Landing

If you weren’t able to catch the Poker Run boats at the Landing because they were so fast, perhaps you had time to swing by the Old Town Hall to see Doug Hook’s art show. This was the 45th year he has been showing and selling his gorgeous watercolours, and the 43rd year at the Old Town Hall in Richards Landing.

Just down the street at the Central School’s gymna-sium was the St. Joseph Island Quilt Show and Sale, drawing hundreds from the area to see beautifully made quilts and have some tea. We will have a full article on the Quilt Show in next week’s Clippings.

Quiche

Here is a great quiche recipe that comes from a friend on Salt Spring Island. The buttery crust is lovely and the filling set’s perfectly. You can put whatever you like in the bot-tom – but this is my favourite

Preheat oven to 400 deg.

For the Pastry1 ½ cup flour½ tsp salt½ cup butter – well chilled1/3 cup ice water

Put all dry ingredients in food processor, cut in butter, and water and process until it ALMOST forms a ball (or use traditional pastry method by hand – hint: grate the butter into the dry ingredients if you don’t use a food processor).

For the Quiche2 cups of leeks – mostly white – some of the green, washed well and slicedham or lardons of fried bacon – just enough to sprinkle over the bottom of the crust ½ lb. cheese I USE GRUYERE always, but you can use Swiss or cheddar

LINE A PIE PLATE WITH THE PASTRY - SPREAD SAUTED LEEKS OVER THE BOTTOMTHEN THE BACON OR HAM IF USING

For the Custard1 Tbsp. flour4 eggs - beaten1 ¾ cup CREAM

Mix custard ingredients until well blended and pour over the filling

Bake for 15 minutes at 450 deg. thenturn down the oven to 350 and bake for an addition-al 30 minutes.

Serve this with a big salad and have some great whole grain bread on the side- ……. Dinner is served!

I would serve this with a nice Prosecco (my first choice) – Or a nice Off Dry Riesling. If you prefer red wine – go with a nice fruity red like Beaujolais ….

Bon appetit - Susan Muise

Weekly Book Reviewby Tracy Howson

Climate Change and the Health of Nations; Famines, Fevers and Fate of PopulationsWritten by Anthony J. McMichaelPublished by Oxford University Press (2017)(279 pg.)

I apologize up front for giving this book a short shift. Summer is wonderful, with lots of opportunities to vis-it with friends and family…but this last week I kind-a dropped the ball on this book. And this is a book that deserves our full attention. I plan to take the deserved deep dive at a later date. Given this book was just pub-lished in 2017, I was humbled by the number of folks from our island who had already signed this book out.

In my opinion, this should be required reading for everyone. I had the sensation of standing outside myself looking at our Earth with time collapsed. It is an amazing review of our planet’s journey, and how climate change has affected everything living on it.

As most know, our planet has undergone numerous episodes of climate change. Natural changes in Earth’s climate have occurred on widely differing time spans ranging from hundreds of millions of years to com-paratively short periods. McMichael provides detailed accounting tracking how past climate changes have affected populations, politics, agriculture and microbes.

The current human-induced climate change has oc-curred, in terms of the Earth’s history, in the blink of an eye. The author refers to our current state as being “on a treadmill, trying to produce more food, more electricity, safe water, and an ever growing population and doing so within a largely deregulated market based economic system that routinely discounts long-term environmental damage”.

This is most definitely not a light read, but the writing and flow is easy to follow. There are lots of technical names, with enough, but not too much, explanation.

According to McMichael we have not yet crossed the climate change threshold of no return, there is still hope we can continue to live on our Earthly home - but we have not been tested collectively and globally like this before. McMichael writes “Radical changes in food systems will be a prerequisite to a shift to sustainable living, and assumes a change in our understanding and preference.” Given our species response to date, we have a right to be concerned. Our dilemma can only be solved only if we all realize we are on the same island called Earth.

“Climate Change and the Health of Nations” is avail-able at the St. Joseph Island Library.

Dark Fishing Spider

We are thrilled to say this week’s creepy creature fea-ture was not a first hand sighting, but rather a submit-ted photo. The dark fishing spider’s body length (ex-cluding legs) of adult female ranges from 15-26 mm; adult males range from 7-13 mm. Legs range from 50–90 mm. This is not the kind of spider you step on, unless you want to see something like a scene out of Arachnophobia. They have been known to from time to time pray on vertebrates (small fish) but are rarely aggressive towards humans. The bite is supposed to be no worse than a mild bee sting, but we don’t suggest you find out. Fishing spiders are confused with wolf spiders to which they are very similar in appearance. While they are usually found near water, they can be found 100 meters or more from a water source. You don’t have to worry about getting stuck in a giant web, as they don’t make them, but they do create silk nurseries for their young.

Thanks to Chris for sending us the photo.
