Personal IoT Solution BriefingPersonal IoT is a suite of solutions that enable service providers to leverage the opportunities brought by the Internet of Things in the connected home, through a managed, multi-standard platform.

Living in the Connected Age

The Internet of Things (IoT) is set to dramatically change society. By 2020 there will be 26 billion connected devices and this ever-growing network will have a massive impact on many areas including transportation, security and critical infrastructure. Yet, within our personal lives and in the home is where IoT may first become apparent. Smart homes will enable us to manage our energy consumption, detect faulty appliances and allow devices to work seamlessly together.

The reduced cost of connectivity silicon combined with the rise of cloud IT infrastructures has triggered this new wave of connectivity, opening virtually unlimited opportunities and bringing with it a new Connected Age. Today, tablets and smartphones are able to serve as convenient remote controls, interacting with traditional objects such as home appliances and even cars. The result is better control, more convenience, cost-savings, wellness and peace-of-mind that are all motivating consumers towards the adoption of IoT.

Overcoming the Challenges of IoT

For the technology industry, IoT offers a huge benefit by helping to differentiate and sell more products. However, IoT relies on one fundamental condition, which is broadband connectivity. This gives broadband operators across telecoms, cable, and mobile the option to revamp

brings new specific operational challenges, including service level assurance of stable connectivity, IoT service provisioning, mobile app management, diagnostics and troubleshooting of new connected devices comprising of sensors and actuators and hosting third party applications on a unified home gateway platform.

The lack of a defined standard, complex integration issues and the fear of adopting an unpopular IoT standard is a worry for operators. Without the right tools, many operators are reluctant to tackle the promising personal IoT market. Operators are therefore looking for help in delivering reliable, flexible and

cost effective IoT solutions, in a market worth an expected $300 billion by 2020.

The ADB Answer

From our heritage as an enabler of IP connectivity, including gateways, routers and Wi-Fi access points combined with personal TV devices, ADB provides a platform for credible smart home applications and unified connectivity. Through our Personal IoT solution, we help manage and simplify integration of multiple

commoditized broadband offerings with a value-added proposition, and to avoid ending up as dumb pipes for yet another raft of valuable over-the-top IoT applications.

While the greatest potential for IoT is its ability to cross-diverse vertical domains such as security, safety, health care, energy, and entertainment – each of these domains is still attended by specialist industries and delivery models. As a result, consumers face a scenario of fragmented IoT services, leading to multiple service boxes, different proprietary apps and user interfaces, isolated use cases, and ultimately a complicated user experience.

For broadband operators, the fragmented market is an opportunity to play the role of a platform provider that can broker, host, facilitate and bridge the diverse vertical IoT applications through a horizontal service platform. Yet such a role

emerging IoT standards and Wi-Fi technologies to deliver a successful IoT solution that helps consumers run their lives more smoothly.

ADB enables broadband operators to address the challenges of IoT and turn them into drivers of a differentiated value proposition, which can comprise both own-branded and 3rd party IoT services.

Personal IoT is a suite of solutions that allow operators to build a service enablement platform with three key attributes: managed, open and multi-service:

• Managed – allows end-to-end remote provisioning, assurance and control of the connected objects

• Open – accommodates de-facto standards including the Apple and Android ecosystems and maximizes the support of open protocols

• Multi-service – supports the creation of a collaborative service model among different domain providers and allows the broadband operator to extend on top of the traditional offerings, creating viable options for up-selling and bundling as opportune.

Personal IoT enables the creation of a complete end-to-end IoT service delivery capability for broadband operators, offering a suite of components that can also be deployed alone to address any specific area of service enablement:

• Unified and hardware-independent gateway embedded software platform

• Multi-protocol broadband and IoT connectivity gateways

• User mobile apps

• IoT service provisioning and assurance

• Remote management of gateways, connected devices, mobile apps

• Quality of Service monitoring and troubleshooting

• Self-care and customer support tools

• Data warehousing and analytics

• End-to-end smart home service suite.

Personal IoT Solution Overview

Personal IoT manages and unifies connected and smart home applications, helping consumers to run their lives more smoothly. Applications include:

• Home automation – enables consumers to manage their

lighting, heating and energy consumption via a smartphone or remote control

• Home monitoring – allows consumers to safeguard their homes and receive updates via SMS or email

• Ambient assisted living – support for the elderly in their daily routines, ensuring they live an independent and safe lifestyle

Personal IoT is developed in synergy with Business IoT and ConnectedOS, to promote software reuse, extensibility, openness, and partner developers’ contribution. ConnectedOS is built around ADB’s award winning Epicentro software application, which has pioneered the concepts of modularity, hardware abstraction and API exposure, which are

essential to a connected home and IoT service strategy.

To serve the needs of turnkey end-to-end hardware and software solutions, Personal IoT also provides an innovative way to select, procure and deploy devices using ADB’s ODM partner network. The ADB network includes the world’s leading connected device manufacturers to deliver the best fit, timeframe and price.

Finally, ADB’s customers can tap into our InnoSolutions services portfolio, a leading edge professional service and outsourcing resource that can support operators in the service lifecycle management process.
