WorkforceDevelopmentAreaisasayearofcontinuedexcellencefullofbestpractices .Frombeing

recognizedasoneofLasVegas’premierbusinesseswiththe2015BusinessExcellenceAwardinthe

categoryofPacesetterforleadership,foresight,guidance,originality,andempowerment,topostingits

besteverindependentauditreport,WorkforceConnectionshasreachedanewlevelofexcellence .To

achievesuchexcellence,theLocalElectedOfficialsConsortiumrestructuredtheagency’sBoardof

DirectorsandstreamlinedstrategicinitiativestoimproveservicedeliveryandimplementtheWorkforce

InnovationandOpportunityAct(WIOA) .Thisreportoutlinesinitiativeswhichresultedinimproved

qualityandincreasedworkforcedevelopmentserviceswithadditionalpointsofaccess .Italsohighlights

theeffectivenessoftheagency’sfiscalandprogrammaticactivities .

ForthefirsttimeeverintheStateofNevada,WorkforceConnectionsprocuredandstood-upa

One-StopCareerCenterOperatortoexecuteandserveemployersandjobseekersineveryfacetof

workforcedevelopment .Thisreportmakesnoteofthesignificantchangesoradjustmentsthestaffputin

placetoimplementWIOA,andimproveaccesstothearea’semploymentandtrainingservices .Through

theagency’sstrategicworkplan,staffwasabletooutlinedetailedtacticsandstrategiestoaccomplishour

missionof“ConnectingEmployerstoaReadyWorkforce”,whileimprovingqualityoflifeandworkforce

developmentsupportforourlocalresidents .

Indesigningtheframeworkforourdeliverysystemtoaccommodateintegratedworkforcerelated

services,weparticipatedinongoingmeetingsthroughoutthisprogramyearwithseveralStateagencies .

OurprimaryobjectivewastosecureMemorandumsofUnderstandingforcollaborativepartnershipsthat

wouldincludesharingofdataandinformationthatallowedustobetterserveemployersandjobseekers .

Withstillmuchworktodo,Iamhopefulthatourendproductwill

providebetterandfasterservicestotheresidentsofSouthern

Nevada .Withcontinuedhardworkandcommittedeffortsguided

towardsachievingourvisionof“FullEmploymentforAllSouthern

Nevadans”,thestaffofWorkforceConnectionslooksforward

tohelpingmakealastingdifferenceinthelivesoftheresidents

ofSouthernNevada .Byallaccounts,thehealthofWorkforce

Connectionsisstronganditkeepsgettingstronger .Althoughthispastyearwasextremelyexciting,with

theonsetofWIOAadditionalfunctionslikemarketingoutreachandyouthentrepreneurtraining,this

upcomingprogramyearwillbelikeatestinglabthatproduces“bestinqualitypractices”recognizedat

nationalworkforceforums .

tomeetthenewBoardmembershiprequirements .TheWorkforceConnections(WC)Boardisadiverse

groupofpeopleactivelyengagedinthecommunitywhoidentifyneedsandopportunitiesandalign

resourcestowardseffectiveworkforcedevelopment .OurBoardmembersincludeleadersfromvarious

areasofthecommunityincluding:

participantsalsopracticeskillsinahigh-techmedicalsimulationlaband

participateinonlinelearningopportunitieswhichfocusonqualityand

safetyinaprofessionalpractice .Participantsinthisprogramlearnto

buildtheirresume,makeprofessionalconnections,andareguaranteed

aninterviewwiththehospitalforafulltimepositionuponsuccessful

completionoftheGapTrainingforRNs:TransitionintoPracticeprogram .

ThisprogramcurrentlyworkswiththreehospitalpartnersinSouthern

Nevada:MountainView,SunriseandDignityHealth .Eachhospital

providesapreceptortoworkone-on-onewiththeparticipantofthe

programforeightweeks .Theparticipantcreatesaskillschecklistat

thebeginningoftheprogramtoassistthepreceptorontheskillsthe

participantmayneed .

AsofJune2016,UNLVhasrunfivecohortsandhasserved34

participants .Elevenofthesestudentsarecurrentlyparticipatinginthe

sixthcohort .Ofthe34whohaveparticipated,29arenowworkingin

fulltimepositions .Participantshavereportedpositiveresultsregarding

theprogramandhaveindicatedtheirskillsandconfidenceimprovedas

aresultofthisprogram .Hospitalpartnershavealsoreportedapositive
