Purpose and overview

Connecting Communities

events

Overall aim / purpose:

‘This is just brilliant! I have met so

many useful contacts here and the

workshop was so inspiring’

Lissa Bridge (Upper Cynon C1st)

Aims for council:

Improve understanding of what’s currently available to service users

Facilitate networking and better communication

Map services

Aims for Voluntary Sector:

Build useful relationships with each other and with public sector

Map service

Did the event build relationships and was it useful to participants in building an

understanding of third sector activity?

Most of the feedback was at the event and was verbal. 44 post event evaluations

were received. In future we will just give participant evaluation questionnaires at the

event.

Participants from the public and third sectors gave similar feedback, which was

overwhelmingly positive. 89% of participants scored either 4 or 5, 9% scored 3. The

comments on what was useful focused mainly on the usefulness of connections

made though a significant number commented on the usefulness of the workshops

Three key suggestions for improvement were

1) Public involvement

2) A list and description of stalls prior to the event.

Date of Taf event: 5th June 2014

Date of Rhondda event: 18th June 2014

Date of Cynon event: 2nd July 2014

RCT CBC Adult Services commissioned

Interlink to organise three Connecting

Communities Events. The purpose of the

events were to promote better working

relationships and joint working opportunities

between statutory services and voluntary

sector groups in the localities of Rhondda,

Cynon and Taf Ely.

Was the general purpose of the events

fulfilled?

Overall feedback given verbally during the

event and in writing after the event has been

positive. All except for one participant gave

made a number of new connections and

organisations with whom to develop practical

working relationships.

Page 4: Connecting Communities Taf Ely, Rhondda & Cynon · 13. Notice Boards- For Community Groups, Services relating health and wellbeing 14. Get input support from NHS Leaders, PHW/WG that

3) Better acoustics

4) Better ‘lay out’ to accommodate unexpected stallholders.

One representative from a national organisation felt the event was too local to be of

use to them.

Mapping

Large physical maps were created and populated as well as digital maps. This

process is not however fully complete. As well as completing process and

developing a database that gives details of every voluntary organisation, Interlink is

aiming to develop an ‘app’ showing all the third sector resources in any area that

can be accessed by anyone It will also encourage and celebrate voluntary acivity..

This is inspired by the ‘Go 4 IT’ app developed by RCT Homes for access to health

and fitness activities.

Event components:

2 hour - Market Place with Voluntary Sector Stall Holders and public sector

staff learning more and connecting with voluntary sector

Around 60 voluntary sector stalls at each event filling capacity of venues with

around 50 public sector staff attending and participating in each event. More

effective targeting of public sector staff is a key area for improvement. However

participants – both stall holders and public sector workers were hugely positive

about meeting each other. Staff evaluations indicated that at every event there

was a strong sense of occasion and ‘buzz’ about the events. It seems that the

connections that were made were mutually useful to both secors.

Graphic illustration of participant perceptions of services, key gaps and key

solutions

Overleaf the graphic illustration of peoples ideas during the market place and

during the workshops brings key ideas into categories and illustrates them in a way

that is useful for post event publicity and to make it easier for people to form plans

following the events.

Spectacle theatre did sketches during the market place to remind us all why

we are there and to help create a 'buzz'.

The graphic illustration of peoples ideas during the market place and during the

workshops brings key ideas into categories and illustrates them in a way that is useful

for post event publicity and analysis that will form the basis of post event actions.

DIY Connector (carbon sheet questionnaire) participants used to connect

with each other and to think through next steps of working together.

The DIY connector was developed for people to record connections and how they

were going to build on connections to make a difference. Not many people left a

carbon copy of their DIY Connector and more could have been done to facilitate

participation in this activity. However those that were completed indicate that

meaningful connections were made that leading to referrals between organisations.

1st Workshop – Maps, Gaps and Solutions analysis facilitated by Matt Wyatt, a

specialist in person centred planning and complex care.

At all three events a Maps and Gaps workshop took place after the ‘Market Place’.

The workshops were light hearted, participative and involved and initial warm up

followed by an invite to identify the ‘key things that would make a difference to

services for people in that locality’. This was recorded both graphically (page…) and

in writing (appendix….).

2nd Workshop (for Taf Ely only) –Ruth Dineen, Co-production Wales facilitated

workshop on co-production in principle and in practice.

Ruth gave a comprehensive overview of the co-production concept with practical

examples from different service contexts. This was followed by a discussion - mainly

around understanding assets.
