    W elcome Back to Reality Labor Day weekend always feels like the last hoorah of summer. As I watched friends and family dismantle the floating dock at the lake, put away the floaties, and pack up; it made me realize that summer was coming to a halt. School will soon start, eventually there will be a chill in the air, and very soon we will be off and running with our 2018-2019 G.R.A.P.E Calendar year. Our kick-off breakfast will be held September 19th at St. John’s Meadows and I am hoping that we have a great turnout! Our September Member luncheon will once again be hosted by the Highlands at Pittsford on the 25th where we will learn more about music therapy from Sam Snyder…apparently as his title hints “It’s Not About the Music”. As a reminder, the Program Committee always places surveys on each table at our monthly breakfast and lunch meetings. These are meant to give you, our members and guests, a voice. We are a member driven organization and want to make sure that you see value in our educational speakers and tell us what new and exciting topics you would like hear more about. Please take some time to fill them out, give us some suggestions, and leave them on your table. As I mentioned above, we are member-driven…so please take the time to TELL someone about G.R.A.P.E. , bring a co-worker or guest to the next meeting, and be an ACTIVE member. Take the time to check out the Events page on the website and make an effort to attend. I understand that we all have busy work schedules and that it is nearly impossible to make it to ALL of our great events and those hosted by our members; but please support your fellow members by attending their programs and events.     In The Spotlight

    Linda Kehoe

    When Linda Kehoe decided to leave the corporate world and become a realtor, it was important to have a connection to those she serves and determine where she was most needed. She didn't have to look too far. Being a member of G.R.A.P.E. helps her do that. She learned about G.R.A.P.E. from the team from Grandma's Helpers when they were hired to pack one of her clients’ homes. “I reflected on my current life stage and the answer came naturally. My husband and I are in our early 50's and our mothers are in their late 80's. Most of our friends are in a similar situation, so it's common for us to know someone who's having to deal with helping an elderly loved one move from their long-time home.” Being blessed enough to still have both her mother and mother-in-law in her life, she has experienced, first-hand, the challenges and crises that can either be avoided or minimized when mature family members need to make a life-style change (either for safety reasons or just to downsize and make things more manageable for them). Linda is fascinated by the various ways people cope during these times, and she has come to respect each person's views as to how they choose to deal with things. Because her mission in life is to always try to make things better for others, she became a certified Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES) with the goal of helping families plan the best course of action during these times. She is committed to becoming a resourceful powerhouse to advocate for seniors and their families and to help them navigate through this emotional milestone. Prior to becoming a realtor, Linda was an Event Coordinator. Since she enjoys having an outlet for her creative side, joining the Annual Dinner Committee was a natural fit. Coordinating the sale or purchase of a home entails many of the same skills as event coordination: managing timelines, keeping everyone informed of status updates, meeting deadlines, seamless execution and follow-through. “Planning this year's Annual Gala with the other amazing committee members has been fun for me. “ Being a member of G.R.A.P.E. has given Linda a network of other ethical professionals who share the similar goal of advocating for the elderly. Linda enjoys yoga, cooking, spending quality time with family and friends, and holistic approaches to life. Her greatest achievement in life, without a doubt, has been raising two responsible children who understand that they are not entitled, who enjoy working and earning their own money, and most importantly, who seek out volunteer opportunities to help those less fortunate. Random fact: Linda has never had chicken pox!

    USA TODAY NETWORK Frank Witsil, Detroit Free Press Published 8:05 a.m. ET Aug. 15, 2018 More than ever before, financial woes are tarnishing the golden years. Despite an economic boom, Americans ages 65 and older are filing for bankruptcy in record numbers, and the trend is likely to continue, according to research that warns the nation's senior citizens are facing a financial crisis with "increasing force and urgency." It's a concern, some experts say, that hasn't significantly hurt economic growth but presents a serious social problem that has been getting worse for more than two decades as debt and medical costs go up and seniors' savings and pension bene-fits go down. For elected officials and candidates now campaigning for office, the problem also raises public policy questions about how wide of a safety net the government should offer for older people, who are now living longer than in past decades, and what the best way is to care for them. "In prior decades, Americans collectively decided that we have a responsibility to our older citizens to absorb the financial risks they face," a national study published this week found. "But, it appears that we have since abandoned that commit-ment." In Michigan, where the population is aging more quickly than the national average and questions loom about the future of some pensions, the problem may become particularly acute. "We're most definitely going to have to address it," said Paul Bridgewater, president and CEO of the nonprofit Detroit Area Agency on Aging. "We're compiling the data to come up with solutions. But across the board, as the baby boomers go into retirement, there are going to be a number of situations that we've never had to deal with Meanwhile, news organizations are publishing reports on how well the economy is performing. In July, the White House website linked to more than a dozen of them under the headline: "Jobs, Jobs, Jobs: The American Economy Is Booming (https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/jobs-jobsjobs-american-economy-booming/)."

    Shifting responsibility In the national study, “Graying of U.S. Bankruptcy (https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3226574): Fall-out from Life in a Risk Society,” researchers looked at data on the age of bankruptcy filers going back to 1991. In nearly three decades, the rate at which seniors file for bankruptcy more than doubled and the percentage of seniors in the bankruptcy system increased by almost five times. Of seniors 75 and older, the increase since 1991 was nearly 10 times. From 1991 to 2015, folks 65 and older went from 17 percent of the adult population to 19.3 percent. "The magnitude of growth in older Americans in bankruptcy is so large that the broader trend of an aging U.S. population can explain only a small portion of the effect," the study said. The change, the study suggested, is being caused by a shift in responsibility for caring for older people. Whereas employers and government once offered more through pensions and benefits, individuals are expected to pick up a greater share of their own financial well-being. It's a concern that was raised a decade ago as employers phased out pension plans and replaced them with 401(k) plans, transferring the risk for paying lifetime benefits from the company to workers. "In our data," the new study said, "older Americans report

    Too little, too late But, as the study points out, bankruptcy protection may offer relief to younger people who are working, but it doesn't much help retirees, who have far less time to recover and are living off limited and fixed incomes. "For older Americans, bankruptcy is too little, too late," the study said. "By the time they file, their wealth has vanished, and they simply do not have enough years to get back on their feet." And while the financial misfortune of older Americans likely won't have much effect on the overall economy, it could become a significant social problem, said Jonathan Silberman (http://www.sba.oakland.edu/faculty/index_SBA.asp?ID=212), an economics professor at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. It's possible, Silberman said, that some of the fallout from this trend could be offset by a large number of people drawing income from pensions, instead of a 401(k) retirement plans. The difference between the two plans is that a pension, which companies traditionally offered, establishes a set amount of monthly income, whereas a 401(k) allows employees to save money in investments that go up and down in value. Still, Silberman said, even with a pension, retirees could lose some of those benefits.

    Increasing debt And, he said, there are other factors: medical care costs, long-term care costs and debt. The study found the median senior bankruptcy filer enters bankruptcy with $17,390 in the red. "They may have debt themselves with a mortgage and credit cards," Silberman said. "They may be trying to help their children, their grandchildren with higher education costs. These are all pressures on the elderly that were not as prevalent in the past." Moreover, research published (https://web.stanford.edu/group/recession trends/cgi-bin/web/resources/research-project/impact-economic-crisis-older workers-and-retirement-security) by Stanford University found workers approaching retirement were the hardest hit demographic of the financial crisis a decade ago: "High unemployment rates, plunging housing prices, volatile equity prices, and low interest rates on fixed income investments have combined to make the Great Recession particularly difficult for older Americans. Silberman, who is still working at 72, said he is not concerned about his own retirement years, but the new study on senior bankruptcies should be a wake-up call for younger workers. "In five or 10 years it might be a more serious social problem that people are more concerned about," he said. "And then there's always this issue: What kind of programs can ameliorate this, and what is the responsibility of the people who are in this situation? "It's a difficult public policy and social issue that the political process will have to sort out."

    The GRAPEvine is the official publication of the Greater Rochester Area

    Partnership for the Elderly. It is published by the G.R.A.P.E. Board of

    Directors to communicate appropriate G.R.A.P.E. business, decisions and positions, and to keep membership informed

    about aging-related issues.

    G.R.A.P.E. is an organization of professionals and interested persons who aspire to improve the

    quality of services for older people. We accomplish this by sharing expertise, knowledge and skills, and by acting as their advocates in ways deemed

    G.R.A.P.E. members are encouraged to submit ideas, pictures and articles, with subjects relating to elder care. We also solicit calendar events, announcements, and employment opportunities. Pictures should be submitted digitally to the G.R.A.P.E. office. Articles are subject to revision by the GRAPEvine Newsletter Committee.
