THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY READ PROGRAMMES INBRINGING DIVERSE FAMILIES TOGETHER
Early READ has a suite of programmes catered for children from different age groups, as wellas for parents with children from these various groups.
All Early READ programmes are free of charge, and open to:
• Families from diverse socio-economic groups
• Families from different races and nationalities
• Families with children of different learning abilities
These families can interact with one another as they come for the programmes, thus buildingstronger community ties.

BABY LAPSIT• Target audience: Parents with babies up to 12 months
• Duration: 30 minutes
• Content: Simple songs, action rhymes and finger plays especially selected for babies

JIGGLE, READ & RHYME• Target audience: Parents with toddlers aged 1-3 years old
• Duration: 30 minutes
• Content: Interactive session with songs, rhymes and stories suitable for toddlers. The programme also aims to increase parents’ awareness of the importance of the 5 early literacy practices while providing an opportunity for parent-child bonding.

PLAY@LIBRARY• Target audience: Parents with children aged 0-6 years old
• Duration: 3 hours
• Content: This programme engages the community in experiential learning through social interaction. Children engage in open-ended play, with no instructors.

STORYTELLING• Target audience: Children aged 4-10 years old
• Duration: 30 minutes
• Content: Storytelling conducted by library staff or by volunteers

TINKER TRUCK• Target audience: Children aged 4-12 years old
• Content: STEAM Learning

SENSORY STORYTIME• Target audience: Parents with special needs children aged 4-6
• Duration: 30 minutes
• Content: Tailored to engage the different senses, this programme is designed for children with special needs in mind, but families with typically developing children are also welcome.

PARTNER PROGRAMMES• Target audience: Children aged 4-6 years old
• Content: Storytelling, stage performances, coding programmes and many more!
• Partners: Storytellers, authors, schools, agencies, volunteers, etc.

EARLY LITERACY CARNIVALS • Target audience: Children aged 2-6
• Content: The Early Literacy Carnivals take place annually at the ECDA Conference, with fringe activities happening at selected libraries. The carnival booths promote sensory and literacy activities that fall within the 5 early literacy practices of Read, Write, Play, Talk and Sing.

EXPERT SERIES TALKS & SEMINARS• Target audience: Parents and educators
• Content: Participants get to learn from experts on a range of topics that support preschoolers in their learning and development. Past topics include: “Raising media-wise children in the digital age”, “Supporting children with learning difficulties”, “Brain connections through art viewing”, “Boosting children’s language and literacy skills” and “Taking Maths Outdoors!”

WORKSHOPS FOR PARENTS: AWAKEN THE READER IN YOUR CHILD
• Target audience: Parents with children aged 2-6 years old
• Duration: 1 hour
• Content: Tips on how to inculcate good reading habits through fun literacy activities are shared with parents for them to replicate at home with their children.

BABIES CAN BE MEMBERS TOO! PROGRAMME• Target audience: Parents with newborns born from Jan 2016 onwards
• Content: Through a membership drive at the hospitals, parents are encouraged to register their newborns as library members.
The Baby gift pack contains:

• Aim: To nurture and develop pre-reading skills and inculcate the love for reading

These collaterals help parents develop pre-reading skills in children using the 5 early literacy practices of Playing, Talking, Singing, Reading and Writing. They include suggested activities that parents can engage their children in and recommended books that parents can borrow.

READ@COMMUNITY• Target audience: Organizations that reach out to the underserved, e.g. preschools that serve children
from low to middle-low income families
• READ@Community is an initiative to promote reading by extending its service beyond its libraries and to bring books to the residents in the community.
• This is a yearly membership in which organizations can borrow up to 2000 books for a period for up to 12 weeks. One can request up to 8 sets of books which has been pre-selected into sets of 250, based on language, age group, and subject category.
• Free delivery and collection of borrowed items (every 12 weeks, tying in with the due date of the library materials) will be provided by the National Library Board.

DIY READ@COMMUNITY• This is an initiative by NLB to engage community organisations to promote reading by extending its
service beyond its libraries by allowing organisations to borrow up to 300 books for a loan period of 21 days with provision for 3 free renewals that can be done online via NLB website using MyLibrary ID.
• The member is free to select the type of books suitable for their organisation, borrow at the book borrowing station, arrange transport of the borrowed items and return at the book drop at any public library. The whole idea is to get everyone reading, wherever they are!

STORYTELLING OUTREACH & GUIDED LIBRARY VISITSTo make the library more accessible for children, selected preschools receive 1 guided class visit and
1 storytelling outreach session to preschool.

DIY LIBRARY ADVENTURESThis is a self guided library visit programme supplemented by resources provided by the library, consisting of activity sheets and recommended booklists.

EDUCATORS’ CONNECT!This annual educator’s networking session serves as a platform to connect, exchange ideas and learning points with other educators and with the Early Read team.

EARLY READ VOLUNTEER PROGRAMMETarget audience: Anyone with at least 2 years of experience working with children aged 0-6 years old
Content: Early Read volunteers will help to conduct “Baby Lapsit” and “Jiggle, Read & Rhyme” at the libraries based on the slots they have selected.
Commitment: Conduct at least 6 sessions of the programme over 1 to 2 years
Reward and recognition
• Increase in the privileges of loan quota
• Attend related seminars/refresher courses
• Attend NLB signatures events, national events, other corporate sponsored events
