We’re at a transformative time in automotive history, but a lot of innovation is already here. As things in the world around us become more connected, our vehicles are no exception. These connected vehicles play an important role in GM’s vision of a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion.

Connectivity is one of many things disrupting the automotive industry. While Connected Vehicles enable amazing customer conveniences like satellite radio, on-screen navigation and even the ability to purchase your morning coffee during your commute, the customer benefits go even deeper when propulsion system data is incorporated in the connected ecosystem. Connectivity aligns with multiple other disruptions, including electrified and autonomous vehicles and plays a big role in enabling a revolution in automotive mobility.

Connected Vehicle data enables Vehicle Health Management to warn customers in advance of a potential maintenance issue. This advance notice provides peace of mind for customers as they are able to better plan service trips. As the autonomous and shared vehicle markets expand, Vehicle Health Management will become more prominent in maintaining fleet availability through preventive maintenance. This information can also be used to anticipate optimal cabin and propulsion system conditions and prepare the vehicle accordingly before the start of a trip.

Connected Vehicles can also combine information from the outside world to improve customer experience and optimize vehicle operation. Connecting with route information such as destination, road conditions, traffic, and weather enables optimized propulsion system operation over the entire trip. This can help with improved range and fuel economy for the customer and in real world driving conditions. Connected apps like those offered for the Chevrolet Bolt EV can also assist the customer with route planning and serve as an Energy Assistant that alerts the driver to the possibility of low range situations and helps resolve them before they happen. This information can also be used as an education tool for the customer like the energy usage screen and the range confidence gauge in the Chevrolet Bolt EV. Connected Vehicle data can also contribute towards a better product by feeding customer usage learnings back into the engineering process. Validation cycles can be correlated to better

reflect actual customer usage for new technology applications (CVT, 8+ speed transmissions, electrification, autonomous) providing the customer with lower cost, higher quality and reliability while reducing warranty costs for the manufacturer. In addition, this information can help identify the most used features, which can then be the focus for customer facing improvements and allow data driven decisions for efficient designs. From connected data we can understand more about our drivers’ habits in aggerate, for example, average EV miles per driven day. Most Gen1 Volts and Gen2 Volts are achieving significant daily EV driving range. Bolt EVs drive even further electrically per day, as would be expected with their greater EV range, many well over 120 miles per day. In aggregate between the two generations of Chevrolet Volt and the Bolt EV, these vehicles have driven 2.6 billion EV miles. Together, we estimate that Chevrolet Electrics have saved more than 100 million gallons of gasoline, when we assume a US national average 26 mpg for conventional ICE vehicles. According to the United States Energy Information Administration, 2016 was a record year for gasoline consumption. Nearly 400 million gallons of gasoline were consumed … each day. We are very proud of these vehicles, and we understand that we have a world of opportunities yet to realize.

These opportunities include connecting the vehicle to the wider data ecosystem such as simplifying the customer experience by engaging features like AWD in advance of reaching sub-optimal road conditions and recommending when and where to re-fuel your vehicle regardless of fuel type (gasoline, diesel, electricity). These features will have even higher value in the future of mobility where driverless vehicles and car sharing are prevalent. The addition of Marketplace and in-vehicle apps were deployed as a software update, leveraging embedded 4G LTE connectivity, to customers that have agreed to the OnStar terms and conditions. GM has been performing software updates over-the-air (OTA) through OnStar since 2009. Now, GM has the capability to provide further value and enhancements to the customer experience. One such feature is Amazon delivery to your vehicle… a cyber-secured system where an Amazon delivery can trigger, through the OnStar back office, the opening of the vehicle trunk for receiving the package. The vehicle is locked after the transaction and the package is more secure than on the customer’s front porch.

As vehicles are more connected, our cybersecurity infrastructure has matured to protect the vehicle control systems and customer information from unauthorized access. GM takes cybersecurity very seriously. We devote substantial resources to address cybersecurity concerns and will continue to do so. Any OTA updates will be executed according to our cybersecurity protocols to protect our customers, their vehicles, and their data. Today, OnStar serves nearly 14.5 million members globally. 8.6 million 4G LTE-equipped retail vehicles on the road. All retail 2016 and newer GM vehicles in the US and Canada are offered with 4G LTE.
