….. RECOMMENDED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
For decades, Kaplan Early Learning Company has been providing professional-development opportunities for educators of young children, and we are committed to providing engaging learning experiences that foster ongoing dialogue and professional growth for educators long after training ends. We differentiate ourselves by understanding the unique challenges and needs of each learning community. Kaplan Early Learning Company offers a variety of online and in-person training opportunities on Connect4Learning®, including four- and two-day workshops. All professional development is developed with consideration for adult learning principles and is delivered with the goal of effective curriculum implementation in mind. Coaching and mentoring opportunities are also available. For Connect4Learning®, our recommended approach to implementation training is a combined model of a two-day, on-site, instructor-led group training for teachers and program leaders implementing the curriculum. This two-day event is supplemented by a follow-up webinar and one-day, midyear training the first year after implementation has begun. We also recommend half-day training for program leaders (administrators). The typical group size does not exceed 30 per trainer, to ensure a setting that maximizes the instructor’s ability to monitor teacher knowledge and skill acquisition. The suggested Connect4Learning® training includes the following components and hours.
Recommended Connect4Learning® Training Hours
Initial implementation training (Two-Day, In-Person) 12 hours total
Follow-up webinar 2 hours
Introductory Unit Modules (online, self-paced) 6 hours
Midyear training (One-Day, In-Person) 6 hours
Half-day administrator training (Half-Day, In-Person) 3 hours
Total 29 hours
Initial Implementation Training (Two-Day, In-Person) Recommended for instructional staff (teachers and assistants) and instructional coaches (i.e., directors, owners, pre-K supervisors), this two-day (6 hours per day) on-site training is delivered to teachers and program leaders in a group setting. The structure of the training includes a focus on both knowledge and behavior. Participants are presented with the research foundations and components of the curriculum as well as with opportunities to explore and practice various aspects. Training includes instruction in the administration, interpretation, and instructional implications of the formative assessment that accompanies the curriculum. The following goals are for school-based instructional staff (both teachers and principals/directors) attending the implementation training:
Understand the theory and research behind the curriculum
Discover and identify the components of the curriculum
Learn how to effectively implement and maintain the curriculum
Plan the Connect4Learning® daily schedule and identify how the learning centers, daily lessons, interactions, and partnering with families support high-quality, developmentally appropriate learning environments
Explore the formative assessment as a tool to help focus observations on the most important knowledge/skills and ensure that each child gets the experiences needed
Connect4Learning® is designed to help teachers develop their responsive teaching in all domains while using research-validated teaching methodologies to guide children’s development. Training will help teachers identify and use the guidance and teaching methods provided throughout the curriculum, including planning for the specific needs of each child, setting goals for individual children, and using the formative assessment to track children’s learning and development progress. Follow-Up Webinar This two-hour webinar will be offered approximately six weeks after the start of the school year (or near the end of Unit 1/beginning of Unit 2). Content will include a highlighted review of the curriculum, with opportunities for sharing best practices and asking questions. Introductory Unit Modules (Online, Self-paced) To provide continued support throughout first year of implementation, a one-year subscription to the Connect4Learning® Portal is available with the initial purchase of the curriculum. This secure, interactive website serves as an invaluable classroom-management tool and features helpful resources and tools to support teachers, including introductory training modules for each of the six curriculum units. Designed to give instructional staff specific support on implementing the curriculum, these modules provide an engaging and interactive overview of the major concepts covered as well as teaching tips for each unit. Midyear Training (One-Day, In-Person)This one-day (6 hour) midyear training provides teachers with the opportunity to assess their progress on the curriculum thus far and to troubleshoot any issues they have come across. Content will include key takeaways from the first three units of the curriculum, a highlighted review of the final three units, and many opportunities for sharing best practices and asking questions. Administrator/Program-Leader Training This half-day (3-hour) training is designed for administrators or supervisors of programs implementing the Connect4Learning® curriculum. This training provides information on helping teachers effectively begin and maintain Connect4Learning®. Tips and techniques for mentoring, classroom observations, and using assessment to guide instruction are examples of topics covered during this session. This half-day (3-hour) training is designed for instructional coaches (administrators or supervisors) of programs implementing the Connect4Learning® curriculum. This training provides information on helping teachers
effectively implement and maintain high quality, consistent teaching with Connect4Learning®. This training will help program leaders support and empower teachers to effectively use the tools provided in the Connect4Learning® curriculum to modify activities, response modes, levels of support, and expected outcomes based on the needs, strengths, and interests of individual children. Use of the fidelity checklist, tips and techniques for mentoring, classroom observations, and using assessment to guide instruction are examples of topics covered during this session. Ongoing Professional Development for Instructional Staff and Instructional Coaches Kaplan is committed to supporting successful implementation of Connect4Learning® and offers ongoing professional development to support a deeper level of knowledge of the curriculum or a requested topic by the state or district, including how it enhances children’s development and skills in the eight domains of the Standards – 4 Years Old to Kindergarten. Recommended topics for follow-up Connect4Learning® training include, but are not limited to, using formative assessment to inform instruction and facilitate small-group lessons; making full use of the online portal capabilities; adapting C4L for children with special learning needs; and using the math learning trajectories to better understand the scope and sequence of the math activities to ensure children’s learning. We will work with each customer to determine the best combination of trainings for their educators and will tailor Connect4Learning® professional development to meet the needs of an individual district, region, school, etc. We will work with each customer to determine the best combination of trainings for their educators. As explained above, Kaplan can offer other types of trainings and can tailor Connect4Learning® professional development to meet the needs of an individual district, region, or school. We are able to deliver trainings on-site as well in specific geographic locations to meet the needs of our customers. Kaplan is committed to supporting successful implementation of Connect4Learning®. In addition to the recommended implementation training outlined earlier in this response, Kaplan’s team of certified trainers is available for training on follow-up topics that support and deepen teachers’ understanding of the curriculum or a requested topic.
