ATHLETICS AND RECREATIONAll U of M students have access to our diverse recreation and fi tness facilities, including our state-of-the-art Active Living Centre, an indoor pool, a year-round ice rink and much, much more. Students interested in playing men’s and women’s Bison sports at the U of M are encouraged to contact the coach for their sport of interest for information about tryouts. COLLEGESColleges provide facilities and programs to create a community within a community for U of M students. For a nominal fee (usually under $20), students can join one of our four colleges – St. John’s College, St. Paul’s College, St. Andrew’s College, or University College – and take advantage of exclusive scholarship support, access to unique study space, and smaller class sizes. Services, facilities and available fi nancial supports vary by college.

FIRST YEAR PLANNING RESOURCESThe First Year Planning Guide provides an overview of how to register for university courses. Students and counsellors can use this online guide to look up the required and recommended fi rst year courses for any U of M degree program, as well as any specifi c high school courses that may be required.

STUDENT RESIDENCESStudents interested in living on-campus in a student residence building should apply online; applications are available in November and rooms are allocated on a fi rst-come, fi rst-served basis. Students can choose from single or double rooms and amenities di� er between buildings. O� -campus housing resources are also available to help connect students with potential rentals, sublets, and roommates.

INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY• The U of M is home to more than 2,500 First Nations,

Metis and Inuit students.• Migizii Agamik - Bald Eagle Lodge serves as a home

away from home for Indigenous students and houses the Indigenous Student Centre, where students can meet with Elders in Residence to receive cultural and personal support and Indigenous student advisors for academic support.

• Public speaking, mentoring, and fi nancial wellness programs give students the confi dence and know-how to become leaders in their community, while the Qualico Bridge to Success Program helps new Indigenous students transition from high school to university with summer programming and Indigenous academic labs for introductory classes.

• Students overcoming social, economic, geographic, and academic barriers can also take advantage of our Access Program for academic, fi nancial, and tutoring support (application deadline is May 1).

UNIVERSITY 1 (U1)· Students should consider applying to University 1 (U1) if they are

seeking a fl exible fi rst year in which they can balance or blend requirements for one or more programs of interest.

· U1 is also ideal for students who do not meet the higher admission requirements required for Direct Entry admission to a specifi c faculty, or who are interested in Advanced Entry programs that admit students only after some prior university study (e.g., Nursing, Environmental Design).

· U1 does not add extra time or cost to a degree and serves as year 1 of any 3 or 4 year degree program.

DIRECT ENTRY· Students can apply for Direct Entry admission to specifi c Direct Entry admission to specifi c Direct Entry

an opportunity to self-declare as a First Nation, Metis or Inuit student and receive personalized communications from the U of M.

· After accepting their o� er of admission, students who self-declare can choose to receive a bi-weekly e-newsletter with information about scholarships and bursaries, academic, cultural and social opportunities, jobs and careers, upcoming events, and more.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN CANADIAN HIGH SCHOOLS· International students fi nishing their high school education in

Canada must demonstrate English language profi ciency depending on their home country and the amount of time they have been studying in Canada.

· Students may qualify for an English language profi ciency waiver if they have been studying in Canada for a minimum of three consecutive years (taking fi ve courses in each of the three years) at an English language high school (transcripts for the minimum three years of study must be provided), or if they take two 40S-level English courses (such as EAL 40S) and achieve an average grade of 75% across both.

· Students who do not qualify for a waiver will be required to write a test such as TOEFL IBT, CANTest, or IELTS. Our English Language Centre (ELC) also o� ers an Intensive Academic English Program.

GRADE REQUESTSIndividual schools and school divisions will be asked to provide interim grades for all Manitoba high school students who have applied to the University of Manitoba by March 1. ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIPSGeneral entrance scholarships range in value from $1,000–$3,000 and are awarded to students with averages of 85% or higher across a select spectrum of Grade 12-level courses. GRADE REQUESTSIndividual schools and school divisions will be asked to provide interim grades for all Manitoba high school students who have applied to the University of Manitoba by March 1. Final grades will also be requested in June. Details about grade submission can be found online at umanitoba.ca/counsellors.

NEXT STEPS PRESENTATIONSRecruitment o� cers will visit your school to provide information about the next steps of becoming a university student, including how to register for courses and accessing fi rst year course lists. Online resources are also available.

ADMISSION OFFERSStudents who apply by March 1 and have submitted all required documents by the deadlines provided in their Application Portal should expect to be notifi ed of their admission decision sometime in May or June. Most o� ers of admission must be accepted by June 1.

SCHOLARSHIP OFFERSEntrance scholarship o� ers are typically provided to eligible students in May or June, shortly after admission o� ers have been made. Students should follow the instructions in their entrance scholarship o� er for details on how to accept their scholarship.

CHOWN SCHOLARSHIP SELECTIONSManitoba and Northwestern Ontario high schools can nominate students to receive the Chown Centennial Entrance Scholarship, valued at $1,000. Selection packages are typically distributed to counsellors in May and must be returned in late June.

PREPARE FOR REGISTRATIONAdmitted students will register for their � rst-year university classes in mid-July. Students are encouraged to review the First Year Planning Guide and connect with academic advisors in June, prior to the registration period.
