Internship
Mapoutahi Beach Trip Quotes—
Upper Intermediate EB At the end of 2014 some of our students from Japanese partner universities undertook
internships. Usually this involves gaining some work experience in places like shops, cafes,
SPCA, botanic gardens or schools. Ayane Sakura and Ryota Shiotsuki who both study
education in Japan went to St Bernadette’s School every Wednesday morning for four
weeks. They observed lessons and singing, joined the children in playing snag golf and
going to swimming lessons.
Winter Heating With the end of Daylight Saving we are reminded that Winter is not far away. As the temperature drops it is important to take a little
extra care to stay healthy during the colder months. Here are a few tips:
1. Dress for the weather. Now is the time to put away the summer shorts and dig out the winter woollies. A good tip to surviving
winter is to “dress like an onion” (lots of layers).
2. Make sure you are eating well and getting enough rest. We are more likely to become sick if we are tired and rundown.
3. Invest in a good multi-vitamin or immune booster. These are not expensive and can be found at all Pharmacies and Health Food
stores.
4. The flu injection is available at student health for $11.50 (normal con-
sultation fee also applies). This can help minimise the risk of getting
Influenza during the winter months and is something to consider.
5. Use heaters and electric blankets with care. ALWAYS ensure these are
turned off before sleeping. Arctic Sheets from The Warehouse are a
great investment for winter as they keep your bed very cosy.
Mapoutahi Beach Trip Quotes—
Upper Intermediate EB
Mapoutahi Beach is a real Kiwi experience place where we could paddle, wade, swim and build sandcastles and
search the rocks for shellfish. It is a place of Maori history.
Erina showed us how to carve a ball from kelp seaweed which becomes like rubber when it dries. It will be my
good souvenir of New Zealand lifestyle.
The size of the mussels to collect is the same as adult hand palm width from thumb to little finger. This is legal size
our teacher said.
My classmates were playing with a rope swing on a tree. Surprisingly I tried to swing. It was such a scary
experience, but my classmates helped me to swing and get off. I felt I was doing a bungee jump.
The beach’s name is Mapoutahi Beach. This is my first time to go to that secret hidden beach. It was such a nce
view.
When we arrived at the beach we ate lunch together on the sand and we talked about many things in English that
we wouldn't have done in the class. I learned many new words and advice about travelling.
Most of the seas have parallel coasts but this beach has a round sea coast.
We went to Scott Lookout first. There was a great view over there, we could see Port Chalmers and a cruise ship.
This beach is a very hidden place. If you go there sometimes you can see dolphins.
