Welcome to April, and maybe some pleasant weather..

Hope Easter and the long school break was

wonderful for you all and you managed to grab some all-important family time. I think the celebrations of 1916 were amazing and the coverage received on TV

can only prove positive for the summer, so here’s

hoping that lots of tourists will come to see this beautiful

little country of ours. This month we meet the dynamic duo

that wake us up each morning in Kerry, Radio Kerry’s Elaine Kinsella and Andrew Morrissey joined us recently for the full Irish breakfast at the delicious Yummy Café in Tralee and we had a chat about the show, the listeners and the presenters themselves. We had a little trip around the county during the midterm to check out the lunch menus, what a choice and speaking of lunch menus, we are very proud of our restaurant awards here in Kerry with 12 winners scooping awards at the recent Munster leg of the final, these winners will now all head off to Dublin for the national awards, and of course to the many more nominated around the county. It really is a testament to the great work and service those in the catering industry do on a daily basis. The Connect Kerry Women in Business Awards are really heating up now with lots of wonderful nominations coming in, we are still taking nominations and invite you to nominate yourself or a lady you feel worthy of nomination, we have received a lot of ladies nominating themselves this year which we are truly delighted with as it shows the pride you have in yourself and your business to take that next step, it was a wonderful night last year and is already proving very popular with tickets to the gala ball being reserved already..We have all the usual contributors with lots of advice for the season especially in the beauty and hair, don’t miss that.So as always boil that kettle put the feet up and maybe sneak that last piece of leftover Easter egg and enjoy your favourite monthly read

Until next month

Some of us may not be morning people but there are two people in Kerry who certainly make it easier to get up each morning, Radio Kerry’s Breakfast Show hosts Elaine Kinsella and Andrew Morrissey join us for a chat to tell us a little bit more about the jolly duo that wake Kerry up each morning.

Where did it all begin for you both on radio?

Andrew; It’s a long story so I’ll give you the short version. For me it was when I was 16 in pirate radio on Pulse FM in Cork City. It was in a bedroom of the owner’s house. From there I became addicted and went to College to study Radio Broadcasting and managed to talk my way into a sports job at Red FM followed a year later doing the overnight shift on 96fm (at this point I was nearly a Garda) and then eventually sending a very dodgy demo tape to Radio Kerry. Fast forward nearly 8 years (with a brief stint in Limerick) and I’m on the Breakfast show with Elaine. Elaine: I had been working for an animation company in Dublin and had just finished editing a film when my mum told me Radio Kerry was hiring. I’d never even considered working in radio as I really wanted to have a career in film but it was May and the lure of a summer in Kerry was strong. Twelve years later and I’m still here!

You are the voices waking up Kerry each morning, it’s an early start how does this suit?

Andrew: I am not a morning person. I never was. I love my bed more than most things in the world and early starts do not appeal to me. Having said that, once I drag myself out of bed I really love being in 1st thing in the morning. KC from Red FM once said, morning is the best time to be on radio and he was spot on. It’s the best time of day I feel and I know people have routines, so to be a part of anyone’s morning habit is a great thing.

Elaine: Well I’m definitely a morning person so it suits my personality to work early. The 5.30am starts are tough going but we’re finished by early afternoon most days so I can collect my little girl from school and spend the best part of the day with her. Most parents who work fulltime probably collect their children from childcare at 6pm so I know I’m lucky in that regard. Some days I do just want to stay in bed though! I’m eleven years on breakfast radio but it still feels strange getting up in the dark every morning.

Elaine you have had a few presenters with you on this show already tell us what Andrew is like as a co- host?

I’ve been really lucky and had lots of lovely co-presenters down through the years. Andrew is great to work with. He’s a real radio person; he’s passionate about it, is very hard working and is always buzzing with ideas. He’s in before me every morning and nearly always makes the first cup of coffee…I’m spoilt!

Andrew is Elaine a morning person? She might not agree but I think she is. As a mum she’s up early like most parents anyway and it’s rare she’s in bad form if ever when she comes in.

I guess you are both asked to do lots of other events supporting local charities and that how do you find juggling all this with work?

Andrew: I love it. I DJ every weekend in the Killarney Grand and it’s nice to do it because I’ve always enjoyed club DJ-ing. MC-ing events are always different. Whether it be a strictly come dancing, a table quiz, a fashion show or even standing on the Rose of Tralee stage having the craic. It sometimes takes its toll on the social life but I always make up for that! I’m also aware of the position we’re in with so many loyal listeners so to be able to help a charity in anyway is great. Most I’ve worked with or for have been so appreciative of the help they receive so that’s always a nice feeling.

Elaine: Yes we do get asked to do a lot of events. We took part in The Kube for CBS The Green recently and had so much fun. I love meeting people, I love getting the chance to chat to listeners and I also think it’s important for everyone to do their bit for the community so we take on a good few charity events every year. However we’re also both available to hire as MCs for all sorts of events – awards, fashion shows, workshops. I’d like to do a lot more of that in the future.

Have either of you ever worked on TV or is there any ambition to go there?

Andrew; I did work with Gathering TV on the Gathering Channel a couple of years ago. I enjoyed it alright but it has nothing on the intimacy of radio. I always thought I’d be good at it but it seems so limited to me sometimes. I’d love to give a gameshow a go.

Elaine: I haven’t done any live TV but I have fronted a few promo videos for different companies and organisations. I enjoy it and wouldn’t rule it out in the future but a move into TV would probably mean a move to Dublin and my life is in

Kerry at the moment.

What do you both do to relax and unwind?

Andrew; Hurling! For me, my teammates at Austin Stacks are not just a team but they’re my friends and brothers and we train hard, play hard and socialise hard. You can’t beat a few Sunday Pints. Away from that though I have an amazing girlfriend and while we don’t have children we do have a child in the form of a 1 ½ year old Yorkshire terrier who loves nothing more than a good long walk.

Elaine: I love going out for dinner with family and friends. I love going to the cinema and I watch way too much Netflix. I train three times a week at Rush Hour Circuits in Monavalley which I love. A group of us are training for the Dingle Adventure Race at the moment so that’s keeping me busy.

So there you have it, the breakfast show that wakes us up each morning, make sure you tune in and get your morning started with Elaine and Andrew.

KERRY LADIES FOOTBALL NIGHT OF FASHION

Football and Fashion mixed recently at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel when ladies and gents from the football community came together to raise funds for Kerry Ladies Football, Over 200 attended the event which began with a champagne reception at 7.Amongst the men who took to the ramp were Councillor Sam Locke and recently elected TD Michael Healy Rae. Shops and designers from all over Kerry showcased on the night which was MC’D by Orlagh Winters and Radio Kerry’s Andrew Morrissey. Prizes were from all over the county with the audience taking home lots of wonderful prizes from the raffle. Alison O Connor from Abbeydorney was announced as best dressed on the night and walked away with a voucher from Jasmine boutique; other winners on the night were Maureen Brassil Tralee who got herself some lovely treatments from The Peninsula Spa at Dingle Skellig Hotel. Paddy white Chairman of the Kerry Ladies says ‘we are delighted with the response we received for our first fundraiser, everyone came out to support us and a very enjoyable night was had, the aim of the night was to raise the profile of Ladies Football and I feel we did a lot of work to start that journey on this event and we look forward to making it an annual event’

Before you get started make sure you invest in some good wooden hangers, the reason being that your clothes keep in better shape on wooden hangers especially all the investment pieces you may have. Please remove all wire hangers and plastics, to allow the clothes to breathe. Although plastic can protect the clothes from dust, gases can build up and discolour certain colour shades particularly lighter or pastel colours. Another thing you need to consider is how to store your knitwear. It should never be hung as this stretches the yarn and will make your knitted items longer than they should be and will cause them to lose shape as well. The ideal way to store knitwear is flat and folded on a shelf or in a drawer. The next step can be the hardest, and one I am guilty of breaking, try not to overfill your wardrobe as firstly you may not realise what you already have and you can also damage/crush some delicate clothes particularly any chiffon items.

We’ve all heard of the “buy one get one free” deals, well when it comes to purchasing clothes it should be a case of “buy a new one get rid of an old one”. If you haven’t worn something in over a year then its time to say goodbye(excluding all your classic investment pieces),as there must be a reason you aren’t wearing them such as they no longer fit or were an impulse trend purchase. The local charity shops will gladly accept them. My final tip is to make your clothes work for you and not let your wardrobe be the only one to see your outfits. Build up a capsule wardrobe of around 20 items that can all mix and match to create several different looks.

I hope these tips have been of some help,That’s all for now,

HAPPY SHOPPING,

Danny

BEAUTYCORNERTANNING WITHOUT THE SUN - CONNECT RECOMMENDSIt’s the time of year where we are all looking for the sun kissed look, of course some people will love to jump on a sunbed, but for those who don’t like that option we have checked out some tanning products and here are our top 3.

HOW TANCEUTICALS MAKES YOU TAN WITHOUT THE SUNApply a little Tanceuticals lotion at night and 6-8 hours later you wake up with a gorgeous, natural-looking tan that doesn’t wash off.

Sounds amazing, but exactly how does it work? The secret is an all-natural tanning ingredient called DHA (dihydroxyacetone). This ingredient interacts with the dead skin cells on the outermost layer of your skin. This reaction actually gives those cells a beautiful bronze colour. It’s completely

safe and lasts until all those dead skin cells are eventually worn off which normally takes about 5-7 days.

In addition to the tanning ingredient that turns your skin bronze, ingredients like Rose Hip, Acai Berry and Shea Butter are ingredients giving your skin these added benefits: • Moisturizes and Nourishes Dry Skin• Evens and Smooths Skin• Tone Firms, Tones and Tightens• Protects Against and Repairs

Premature Aging• Minimizes Appearance of Wrinkles So once you start using Tanceuticals, not only will you look like you just got back from the beach. But your skin will also look younger, tighter and much more radiant!

Is it safe for skin?Absolutely! The main tanning ingredient, DHA, has been approved by the FDA since 1972.In addition, organizations like the Mayo Clinic, Skin Cancer Foundation, and American Academy of Dermatology all recommend self-tanners like Tanceuticals over sun exposure or tanning beds. And if you still have any doubts, talk to your dermatologist or skin care professional. The good people from Tanceuticals are pretty sure they’ll tell you the same thing

MARULA DRY OIL SELF TAN SPF 50Introducing the world’s only self-tan with SPF 50 sun protection. Marula Dry Oil Self Tan is a refreshing, non-greasy self tan oil with incredible added skincare benefits to give you a beautiful, natural tan, whatever the season. Marula Dry Oil Self Tan harnesses the skincare power of East African Marula Oil for superior anti-age and hydrating benefits. This new wonder ingredient is four times more hydrating than Argan Oil and contains four times the Vitamin C of oranges.

Tahitian Monoi Oil lends its healing, skin repair and moisture locking benefits, as well as its beautiful scent. Certified organic extracts including Cucumber, Neroli, Coconut and Lemongrass contribute to a unique formula that nourishes, hydrates and repairs skin. With the addition of broad spectrum SPF 50, Marula Dry Oil Self Tan gives the ultimate combination of treating, tanning and protecting skin in an incredible 3-in-1 treatment.Marula Dry Oil Self Tan also includes Vita Liberia’s revolutionary pHenO2® technology to give the longest lasting tan result - up to four times longer than regular sunless tans with just one application. Normally, a tan can only last on the skin until the skin cells shed naturally (around 4-7 days), however pHenO2 technology encourages the active tanning agent DHA to release onto the skin in stages when required. This time release feature means that the DHA is released slowly over a longer period of time, guaranteeing a longer lasting tan result (independent consumer testing).

CLARINS- LIQUID BRONZE SELF TANNERAnother beauty-award winning self-tanner from Clarins, this product really is liquid bronze. Perfect for special events or when you want a healthy glow quickly.

One question that crops up time and time again in practice relates to procrastination and what to do about it. Before I start to answer this, I already know that the person asking has likely had a lifetime of negative self-talk relating to procrastination. Typically this sounds something like “you eejit, here you go again, why didn’t you start earlier, you never learn” and this is at the nicer end of what people tend to say to themselves. There is of course also the constant wondering of “If I can do this much, what else would be possible, if I just got the job started earlier?”

So I start in a way which usually shocks many people to their core and that is to ask them if they had ever thought of the immense positives involved in the process of procrastination. I help them to re-frame procrastination by saying you can work under pressure! Often extreme pressure! To deadlines! And also you are able to work under stress! And produce a phenomenal amount of work in a very short amount of time! These are highly marketable skill sets. Just think about how many jobs require these skills such as a journalist who

needs to be able to work to deadlines under stress, often with a lot of pressure. Or think about a sales person working in the stock exchange and so on. So now I have people feeling that actually maybe they’ve just spent all these years telling themselves how bad they are when actually they might be pretty great. And truly of course they are pretty great but it is at this point I have to say BUT!!! it is not always the best way to do things as you know. That’s when I introduce the secret to procrastination and the secret is simply JUST DO IT, forget about waiting for your mind to catch up and ‘feel like it’, that simply won’t happen, so physically JUST DO IT, just pick up that pen and write, just pick up the phone and make that call, just open that word document and start your thesis, the mind will catch up when you physically start, I pretty much guarantee that. The problem is that procrastinators tend to tell themselves that they will ‘do it’ when they: feel like it, when it’s warmer, when it’s colder ad infinitum until crisis stage and they produce the goods. The real secret to doing things differently is 1) Know that you will NEVER feel like it, and 2) JUST DO IT.

Like most things it does take practice so that ‘just doing it’ can become an automatic behaviour but it is possible, I know very well being an ex-procrastinator myself.

As refreshing as water and as gentle as a milk, this vitamin-packed tanner delivers color effortlessly to face and decollete with natural-looking results, while keeping your skin soft and healthy-looking. Easy-to-apply, quick drying and streak-free, its slightly tinted tone makes it virtually mistake proof. Results are subtle and you will see your sun-kissed results in just a few hours. For a more radiant and even result, exfoliate skin the night before. Apply a small amount of self-tanner with quick,

light sweeping motions (avoiding the eyebrows and hairline). Gently wipe elbows, knees and heels with a tissue, as these areas can turn a darker colour. Wash hands and nails thoroughly after application. Wait a few minutes before dressing.

So this month we chat with Sean Taaffe stylist Lorraine Horan For frizz-free beach days and glossy sunny highlights

Keep Conditioning - Conditioner for hair is like water for the body. You’re always going to need it! Even if you don’t want to wash your hair you can spritz a leave-in moisturizer.Recommends - Joico Moisture Recovery leave-in moisturizer

Seal Your Colour - Heat and Sun oxidize hair colour, making it look dry and dehydrated. To seal in colour and hydrate always make sure your products have colour protectantRecommends- Joico Colour Endure Range

Heat Up - Use the heat of the summer to your hairs advantage! While you’re at the beach or poolside, treat your tresses to a deep conditioning mask.Recommends- Alfaparf Moisture Mask

Block out the Sun - Summer is just fraught with hair danger and prevention

is key. When youre at the beach, slick your hair back with conditioner it acts as a barrier to sunlight, salt water & chlorine.

Spray No More - Nix the hairspray - its extremely drying. Common ingredients like alcohol and ethanol can be very damaging to your hair because they dry it out, causing it to snap or break very easily. Consider a gentilier hairspray.Recommends - Alfaparf Illuminating Hairspray

Get Rid Of The Green - Chlorine doesn’t turn your hair green, but algecide, which stops algae from growing in pools. After a dip, prevent green hair by washing your hair with a good cleansing shampoo.Recommends - Joico Clarifying ShampooHopefully this will help you with those bad hair days this summer..

She had purchased a scarf for her Mom at Christmas as a gift and when her Mom wore it with the outfit it completely lifted the jacket and almost made a new outfit, so she wanted to do the same with the other 4 garments. I smiled, because I have been aware for a long time that new accessories can totally transform an older outfit. So here’s a challenge for you to consider. Pick out three or four outfits from your wardrobe that you have had for a while, outfits that have survived the decluttering process because you feel good when you hold them, they are probably pieces you spent a lot on when you had more money than sense or pre large mortgage days. How good would it be to bring a bit of jizz and life into those outfits again? Most of our

customers are going to special occasion’s weddings, races, confirmations etc., but here is no reason that we shouldn’t look our best for less formal occasions. So when you get a chance, go through your wardrobe, choose your piece or pieces you want to liven up, then make a little time to call in and see what can be done with accessories. I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised, and still be able to pay the mortgage!!. We are running a little giveaway to our readers this month, if you pop in to That’s Perfect and say ‘are you Carmel’

they will get 10%off purchases

Until next timeKeep smiling

The lifestyle magazine for Kerry

Styling This month I want to talk about Paul Galvin’s Push collection which was showcased at Kerry Fashion Week. I for one am very impressed with what I saw. There are some great pieces within the collection. One of the highlights is the three piece suit. I particularly like the waistcoat €60, the over lap and the button detail is something I haven’t seen before. Its incredibly flattering (I tried it on), it’s figure hugging without being tight. Not an easy task to achieve. The jacket €90 and trousers €60 are slim fit in there style and will work very well for the majority of Irish men. Another star in the collection is the burgundy brogues €85, as you know by now I’m not a fan of brown shoes but these are a great nod to the trend and will age well in your wardrobe. I also tried on the some other pieces. Some of the other wardrobe essentials like the t-shirts €20 felt inexpensive for their price. The superstars of the collection are the white shirts, both €45

each. I would encourage every man to buy Galvin’s classic white shirts. They are amazingly well tailored and the collars are new and innovative. Paul Galvin’s future as a fashion designer is strong, overall this collection has impressed me and I’m looking forward to what he produces next.

Grooming They say that our eyes are the window to our souls. The skin around them for me is the biggest tell of aging in the skin. I’ve been on a mission to lose weight over the past two years with some success. What nobody tells you when losing weight is how it effects our skin. After intensive gyms sessions and restricted diet my face on occasion looks like somebody left the air out of a tyre, especially under my eyes. I looked way older with the fine lines exaggerated and the skin looking loose. Not a good look. A friend gave me Lancome, Anti Fatigue eye gel to try and after a few days the skin around my eyes looked better than it has in years. Its €44, available in CH Chemist and Sam McCauley’s. Definitely an investment in the future of your face So I hope this was of some help to you guys getting ready for the promised sunshine on the way very soon

Till next time

The Munster Regional Final of the Irish Restaurant Awards took place in the Muckross Suite at The Malton Hotel, Kerry recently and named the top restaurants in the six counties for 2016. Over 500 restaurant owners and staff celebrated their hard work and achievements at the Awards, which saw many well-known restaurateurs of Munster, turn out to see if they had won one of the prestigious awards. Speaking at the awards, Chief Executive of the Restaurants Association of Ireland Adrian Cummins said; “The Irish Restaurant Awards celebrate their eighth year this year and have become the Island’s biggest food awards. The credibility that these awards have is reflected in the amount of nominations they received this year – over 70,000 individual nominations were

cast across fourteen categories, showing that these are the awards that everyone wants to win. The Restaurants Association were delighted to be able to bring the awards to Killarney for the first time. It’s great to be able to bring the awards to different parts of Munster. The hospitality and service we received there was second to none. It was a successful night with plenty to celebrate. I wouldn’t hesitate in coming back.”All County winners now compete for the Regional and All Ireland Title which will be announced at the Irish Restaurant Awards in the DoubleTree Hilton Hotel, Dublin on Monday 16th May, 2016.

There was plenty of reason for The Europe Hotel & Resort to celebrate; Head Chef of The Panorama Restaurant Simon Regan scooped the award for The Best Hotel Restaurant in Kerry for the third year in a row. This is a fantastic achievement for The Europe Hotel & Resort. The success of The Panorama Restaurant is as a result of a talented team who has devoted their careers to continuously delivering and nurturing such high standards. We spoke to head chef Simon Regan who said “The Restaurant Association of Ireland awards are held in great esteem among our hospitality peers and customers alike, therefore as a kitchen team we are very proud to have won Best Hotel Restaurant in Kerry for a third consecutive year. It shows a sustained level of consistency, which in turn enables the customer to enjoy a 5 star dining experience.”

Sol y Sombra, Killorglin, has long been known for its unique tapas offering in the ambient surroundings of the old church and this year the Restaurants Association of Ireland awarded the restaurant two accolades.Alberto Mendoza, long standing restaurant manager was awarded “Best General Manager” in Munster 2016. Sol y Sombra colleagues agree that Alberto was much deserving of the reward and is a real pleasure to

work with. For the second year running Sol y Sombra also received the honour of “Best Wine Experience” in Kerry. Resident wine enthusiast and proprietor Cliodhna Foley said “we are absolutely delighted with the recognition. Over the past 18 months we have hosted a significant number of wine tastings and events. We keep our wine offering fresh by constantly updating the list with exciting new finds as well as giving guests the opportunity to taste different wines by the glass on each visit to the restaurant. We are delighted to continue our series of wine tastings in 2016 and hope that those with an interest in or love of wine will come along and join us for one of our tastings.”Sol y Sombra runs a special wine emailing list for those interested in wine news and events.

Also in Killorglin Nicks brought away the best Gastro pub award congrats to john and the team there for that.

Kenmare did equally as good with the Best cafe award going to Colm and

Helen in POFFS while best newcomer went to The MEWS, and best chef to Philip Brazil of Sheen falls.

The Oyster Tavern renowned for its delicious seafood won the best customer service and to those of us that know the Oyster it comes as no surprise, Jim and his team pride in their customer service and whether it’s a pint of Guinness of a full meal everyone gets the same dedication and one to one service so congrats guys.

So there you have it, the winners in detail but don’t forget there were many more establishments in Kerry who were nominated so we in Connect salute all these nominees, it’s a tough industry so being nominated is a win in itself, well done one and all, keep up the good work and here’s to a busy summer season.

MAC DOMHNAILL DENTAL TRALEE, 11 Denny Street Tralee066 7121457, [email protected]

Pearly Whites:Fáilte RomhaibhBy Dr. Marcas Mac Domhnaill

It is that time of year again when we want to spring clean the house and prepare for the longer Summer days to come. People are now planning their year with regard to holidays and work. The same should be true with regard to our general medical and dental health. Indeed our oral health can be a mirror image of our medical health. An oral and dental examination should be done at least once a year. Apart from tooth decay and gum disease, a dental examination may uncover many serious health issues. As students prepare for their end of year examinations at this time of year, they often present for dental examinations complaining of pain and tension in the jaws and muscles of the face. These pains may also contribute to tension headaches in the temples and forehead. When people are under pressure they often clench and/or grind their teeth together. This can happen during the day and even while they sleep at night. This can eventually lead to excessive wear of the teeth and even fracturing of the teeth. Traditionally, acrylic nightguards have been worn on the teeth at night, to prevent teeth from wearing down. This can also help to reduce clenching of teeth. For those people who cannot tolerate acrylic nightguards in their mouths, hollow ear devices can now be worn, to encourage the jaw to stay in a relaxed position. The ear canal is just beside the jaw joint and thus the ear devices can help to relax the jaw. It is better to catch jaw pain problems early and so prevent more serious damage occurring at a later stage. A ‘spring clean’ dental examination can also prevent many other oral problems from getting worse. Patients are often unaware of having cysts in their jaws. Cysts are often found for the first time while doing radiographs (x-rays) for patients. They are usually removed to prevent them from getting bigger and destroying healthy bone in the jaw. If the bone was to be eaten away by a cyst without any intervention, the jaw could eventually crack and break. Tús maith, leath na hoibre.

There are a number of people each year who have head and neck cancer discovered while attending their dentist for a routine examination. These patients are often unaware of any problem and they do not present with any symptoms. A recent story in the media was very uplifting, when it described how a patient with undiagnosed leukaemia was told by her dentist to go and get a blood test done immediately, due to her poor oral health and medical history. This was later to save her life, as her hospital consultant said that if she had left it for another 24 hours, she would not have survived.

If you are amongst the fifty per cent of the population who have not had a dental and oral examination in the last twelve months, now is the time to act. Is fearr an tsláinte ná an táinte – Health is better than wealth.

DepresionSelf-Help for

Springtime is often a time for cleaning out, decluttering and change. Some people welcome it, and have no problems with getting rid of “stuff” in their homes, but for others it’s a real challenge, and our houses get fuller and fuller of things that we no longer use but can’t let go.

Take a look around your home or room. What is hard for you to let go? Clothes that you haven’t worn for years? Books that you’ve already read? Are your fridge and store cupboards crammed to bursting point with jars and bottles that you haven’t used since 2012? Do you still have your children’s report cards and drawings from school, even though they’re in college now?

Do you keep old receipts, instruction manuals for a washing machine you had in the nineties? Birthday cards from three years ago? Bits of string and rubber bands? Dozens of pens that don’t even write anymore? Old photographs of people we don’t even recognize?

No matter what it is, things that we can’t let go of provide some sort of safety. We keep loose nails because we might need them some day, and it would make us anxious not to have them. We hang on to clothes that don’t fit us, in case we lose weight and could wear them again. We keep baby buggies because we might want to pass them on to our grandchildren some day. All these are “just in case” things. What would happen if I needed a thing, any thing, and I didn’t have it? I would have an unmet need, and that is scary for us. To avoid that anxiety, we hang on to things that do not assist us in living our lives in the moment.

Learning to let go of clutter and surplus things in our lives means learning to trust ourselves to be able to meet our own needs, and trusting our ability to tolerate the discomfort of not having everything to hand immediately. We may indeed reach a day when we urgently need an empty box, or a denim skirt two sizes too small, but we can learn to trust that when we do need those things, we will be able to get them. We don’t need to keep ourselves surrounded by “just in case”. We can just let go.

ConneCtWITH YOUR HEALTH

Feeding problems are a very common occurrence in infancy and childhood. Common definition of feeding problems is the inability or refusal to eat certain foods. Feeding problems may lead to negative nutritional, developmental and psychological outcomes.

Feeding problems in the 1st year.Causes:1. Colic2. Reflux3. Constipation4. Ill child 5. Any cause of breathlessness such as chest

problems or heart problems Inadequate winding

6. Breastfeeding problems7. Inadequate milk cracked nipple8. Tongue-tie rare (cause of feeding

problems)9. Allergic to cow’s milk10. Teething11. Infants should be allowed to feed themselves as soon as they are physically able to do so.• at 6 months can hold a little• at 9 months can hold cup and crackers• t 11-12 months can use spoon

These are often interfered with and feeding problems often result from excessive parental insistence on eating and subsequent anxiety of parents and child if child fails to heed the insistence. Mothers often interfere with these processes to avoid messiness. These are an important part of overall development and are to be encouraged. After 1 year of age children’s likes and dislikes should be respected. Forcing other foods leads to feeding problems. Most children will have adopted a pattern of 3 meals/day and 2-3 snacks.

Rate of growth decreases about end of 1st year and nutritional intake decreases accordingly. Temporary periods of particular food/total food refusal are common. Parents should be reassured that this is normal and force feeding leads to feeding problems.

After 2 years of age, child’s diet should not differ from that of adults. Likes and dislikes should be respected – if they are not, feeding problems ensue. Chaotic/rushed mealtimes/ TV on/ etc. can lead to feeding problems. If a child is allowed to “graze all day” they may lose out on routine

of 3 meals a day and will not feel hungry. It must be noted that if mother is suffering from depression her perception of feeding problems may be exaggerated and so mother may need treatment. The first few years are the most important years where the habits of a lifetime can be formed in your child’s life so take time to consider the decisions made with regard to food, a balanced diet introduced early will become the norm for your child so start as you mean to continue.

The Bons Secours Hospital in Tralee has just introduced a number of new Consultants to the team, this month we meet Deirdre Fanning Urologist,

Deirdre, tell us a little bit about yourself?I grew up in County Wexford and am one of six children. Both of my parents are from farming backgrounds. Virtually all weekends and holidays were spent on my grandfather’s dairy farm in north Wexford, so the beautiful Kerry countryside brings back fond memories to me.

Growing up there was a strong emphasis on hard-work, education and sport in our home, something I think which had a strong influence on my career choices. My family is longstanding fervent GAA supporters, with the All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship Cup named after my uncle Andy Merrigan. I played underage Gaelic football for Wexford and indeed was the first girl to play on the boys team for the Geraldine O’ Hanrahans Club in New Ross.

At age eighteen I moved to Dublin to study Medicine at UCD. Following graduation life was largely consumed for numerous years with surgical training, study and work. As a post-graduate I completed a Masters in Medical Education from Queens University Belfast and a Medical Doctorate relating to Prostate Cancer from UCD.

During my training I spent a year working in Limerick, and it’s there I met my now husband. Hence the permanent move to the Southwest and commencement of work in the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee last November. We are the lucky parents to an increasingly active and cheeky toddler.

I love to travel and enjoyed many trips to far-flung destinations before becoming

a mother. I look forward to embracing travel again in due course, when my little man is able to wear a backpack. I have always loved fashion and enjoy indulging in shopping and keeping abreast of fashion trends.

You are a Consultant Urologist, what does this involve?I cover all aspects of male and female General Urology. My work involves

diagnosis, investigation and management of a wide range of issues, from urinary tract infections, female urinary incontinence, prostate issues, scrotal swellings, erectile dysfunction, kidney stones, bladder cancer and so on.

I would typically spend half my week consulting with patients in clinic and the remainder of my time in surgery. I have regular interactions with my Medical and Surgical Consultant colleagues, discussing complex cases and availing of their expert opinions.

It is a great privilege to be in a position where I can experience the joys of operating on a wide variety of conditions,

and am able to balance that with the very human interaction with patients in clinic. It is this mix of activities, which attracted me to Urology initially.

I am very proud to be one of the 500 people working at the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee. Having previously worked in many large hospitals throughout the country, I can honestly say that there is a warm and welcoming atmosphere within the hospital. Patients are embraced, their dignity maintained, their privacy respected, and treatment provided in an efficient, modern and dynamic environment.

Fortunately within the Bon Secours Hospital Tralee I have rapid access to a comprehensive range of diagnostic tests from Ultrasound to CT to MRI to Urodynamics, so my patients do not have to struggle with the inconvenience of waiting lists. The time from when I initially see a patient in the clinic, to diagnosis and surgery, where appropriate is brisk.

Do you feel people need to be more educated on their health and looking after themselves better?I think Irish people are quite well informed regards health issues. I don’t see a lot of reluctance from people in relation to admitting they have a problem and looking for help. I would advise people to seek help if they are suffering. Often the biggest hurdle is the anxiety and fear of the unknown prior to attending clinic, and generally simple investigations and advice can lay this to rest.

Appointments with Ms. Fanning can be arranged via GP referral to the Kerry Clinic, Bon Secours Hospital Tralee.Secretary Name: Sandra. Direct telephone 066-7164532. Fax 066-7164535.

CONNECT ONLINE

A recent report by a national newspaper has revealed that Kerry is the 3rd Worst County for broadband speeds in Ireland. With average download speed of a lowly 8.6Mbs, broadband emerged as one of the major issues concerning businesses in the recent general elections.

Broadband speed is a key factor for international businesses looking to invest in a region!

Having read all the reports, and attended the launches promising to resolve the situation for Kerry, I still wait with great (but ever waning) anticipation to see any end-results. Meanwhile Cork, Dublin and the East Coast of the country are seeing the fruits of their investment, with significant high-tech jobs being created. The availability of ‘basic’ infrastructure is a key factor for any international business looking to establish in a region, basic broadband (not asking for the moon and the stars here) is as important for businesses as a decent road network, running water and electricity.

Broadband has become a staple of all businesses to not only thrive, but simply to survive and compete.

It is not just large high-tech firms that need to be connected at a reasonable level. Whether it be your local shop who needs respectable speeds to process card-machine payments or order goods online (never mind, even dare to try and branch out to online sales), or your professional office trying to develop business relations outside of their own parish, or even a rurally located industry trying to create jobs in their own community rather than relocate – a decent broadband speed is now an integral necessity for everyday life and businesses.

And, lest we forget, this is not just a rural issue, our larger towns in Kerry need to first catch up before they can ever compete for jobs with their neighbouring cities of Limerick and Cork.In a partial acknowledgment of the dire situation Eir (formally Eircom) recently announced 8,010 homes and business across Kerry will receive upgraded broadband speeds (1,000Mbps promised, let’s see what happens) at some point in the next 12months. However, some would question this as a meagre effort with larger towns like Killorglin (970), Killarney (820), Tralee (760) and Dingle (290) all receiving less than 1,000 connections.

Some would question the allocation of the planned upgrades, with areas such as Anablaha earmarked for 430 upgrade locations, whereas Listowel is earmarked for a big fat ZERO!

I had to Google where Anablaha even was (a rural area between Gneevguilla and Kilcummin with no listed businesses), but of course one should not question the thinking behind this strategy.

SUPERFAST BROADBAND, THE STUFF OF DREAMS...UNLESS YOU LIVE IN ANABLAHA

The mere mention of Revenue Audits is often enough to make most wake up in cold sweats in the middle of the night. Why did they pick me?, What did I do wrong?, How much will I owe?

WHO IS SELECTED?Although some Revenue Audits are still random, the majority are now based on a Risk Evaluation Analysis and Profiling (REAP) system. It allows Revenue to analyse data across individuals, companies, business and sectors, identifying inconsistencies. In addition Revenue often targets specific sectors, at present construction is coming back under review.

ASSURANCE CHECKThese are not Revenue Audits and happen very frequently to

allow Revenue to try explaining inconsistencies without the need for a full audit. Take these seriously as there is a reason Revenue has selected you. In absence of proper response it is likely to lead to a full audit. REVENUE AUDITEssentially if you are fully compliant you have nothing to worry about but be careful. Although revenue audits are for specific periods they can be extended. Do a review of information prior to the audit and if necessary make a voluntary disclosure of any errors at the start of audit.

NB: Penalties and interest will be applied to any

underpayment of tax. Penalties are much higher when errors are not disclosed.

RECOMMENDATIONFiling tax returns on time consistently reduces Risk so stay compliant even when you cannot pay liabilities.

While MPVs may not be the most appealing of vehicles on the road the new VW Touran’s handling certainly doesn’t feel like that of a boring family car writes Suzanne Keane

It may not look all that different from the outside but the new Touran is 130mm longer & 36mm wider than the previous version and will come with 7 seats as standard – with 3 point seat belts all round and an impressive 5

ISOFIX anchor points. The 2nd row of seating has 3 individual seats of equal size and the tunnel height has been reduced for extra leg room – you can also order integrated child seats as comfort options. The 2nd and 3rd rows of seats will fold flat when required and from Comfortline spec onwards the passenger seat folds flat to be used as a table.Once you’re behind the wheel of the 2.0L 150bhp version it’s easy to forget you’re driving an MPV as the Touran handles just like a lower car and feels great on both country roads and motorways – in fact on the road from Killarney to Sneem via Molls Gap it was easy to forget I was driving a 7 seater! So if you’re in the market for an MPV but would love a hot hatch the VW Touran may be the ideal compromise – for a sportier looking car the R-Line styling pack will add bumper and sill extensions and some distinctive R-Line badging.

Annual road tax on the 2.0 TDI engine will cost €200 (2.0L TDI DSG €270) and it will consume just 4.5l/100km. The new VW Touran starts from €29,725 and the Highline which was tested in Kerry will set you back €45,232 OTR.

VW TOURAN’S HANDLING

WITH MARK DOE

INGREDIENTS METHOD

Spring is in the air, Summer isn’t far away and chefs eagerly await the exciting choice of foods that this season brings. The choice of ingredients at their best include rhubarb, carrots, broad beans, spinach and later in May, Asparagus. Although lamb is available all year round, there is no doubt that Spring lamb is far superior.

Spring lamb has to be one of Ireland’s purest delicacies. Most of the animal is tender enough for grilling or roasting, except the shanks and neck. One dish we produced at The Ritz, London and was a firm favourite with the regular diners, was loin of spring lamb, wrapped in basil and confit potato slices. This was then roasted and served on spinach with a lamb jus finished with a little ratatouille liquor. A very tasty & simple little dish. So make the best of this amazing produce whilst it is at its best and try my recipe for rack of Spring lamb with mint pesto, rocket and mozzarella salad.

1. First make the dressing. In a small bowl, mix together the olive oil, balsamic, and a little salt.

2. Now make the pesto. Combine all ingredients in a small food processor and pulse to combine. Add more oil for a smoother pesto, or leave it chunky - whichever consistency you prefer. Mix in the mint jelly.

3. Assemble the rocket on your serving plates and top with mozzarella slices, dollops of pesto, and a few pinches of red chilli flakes.

4. Now cook the lamb racks. Pre heat your oven to 220c/gas 7/fan 200c5. You may need to remove a layer of the fat from the lamb if it is very thick. 6. Crisscross the fat using a sharp knife (this will help the fat cook nicely).7. Season the lamb with some salt and pepper.8. Place a heavy-based frying pan over a high heat until very hot. Add a little oil

to the pan and place the lamb in the pan fat side down. 9. Sear the lamb for 2-3 minutes on each side, so that the fat is golden.10. Place the lamb onto a roasting tray and place in the oven. Medium cooked

lamb will take approximately 14-16 minutes.11. Remove the lamb from the oven and leave on the tray to rest for 5 minutes

before serving with the salad.
