Page 3: Connect 8 / November

Hi everyone.I just want to start this month by saying a huge thank you to all the businesses in Kerry who came to support the launch of Connect Kerry, it was great to see so many of you make the night. We hope you enjoyed the night as much as we did, we have featured some of the pictures from the night. We would have had to have a separate issue to feature them all but they are all available to

view on our website www.connectpublications.ie.

This month we meet with Radio Kerry and we are SO proud of them as a station and a wonderful group of people who have done so well at the PPI Awards, winning 3 major awards for the county, we catch up and see what the secret to this success is.

We also paid a visit to the Horan Centre in Tralee where a number of new businesses have just opened their doors to the public, it’s refreshing to chat to these traders and see the positivity amongst them all working together to make their shopping park stand out.

Christmas is on the way and we take a look around the county to see what’s available for the famous Christmas party nights, lots of wonderful options to choose from. Dr MARY advises on that dreaded trip to the GP, and our fitness page gives us some important tips on diet and exercise. Of course we have lots of pictures from events happening around the county and there was so much on during October we didn’t get to fit everything in but we did the best we could.

Just a reflection as we start planning for Christmas spare a thought for those who are less fortunate then ourselves this year, as we know many organisations will be sending out the pleas for help and support so ensure you chose well and keep it local, if we all did one little thing for our local appeals and we all purchase just one item each from our local shops we will keep this county moving. Support local support our own.

Until next month

We catch up this issue with the most popular radio station not only in Kerry but in Ireland it seems. Freshly back from the wonderful Lyrath Estate Hotel in Kilkenny at the PPI Awards (which to those of you unfamiliar) is the Oscars of the Radio Industry, Radio Kerry swept the boards and brought back 3 awards, Sports Programme of the Year- Terrace Talk with the infamous Weeshie Fogarty at the helm, JJ O Shea won silver with his very entertaining program Global Village, and of course the Dong of the night was for Local Station of the year in Ireland, which again we are proud to say came back to the county. I caught up with some of the team for a chat

Weeshie Congrats on your recent achievement, how does it feel to get the ultimate in the Radio Awards Sports program of the year?

Amazing honour and privilege to help

Radio Kerry to this prestigious award and to finish ahead of the national stations is unbelievable really. It is I believe very important that the smaller local stations are seen to have the talent and facilities to win PPI awards such as this.

You have been involved in sport for many years when did you officially break into the broadcasting industry?

Nearly twenty years ago now, the then Head of Sports in Radio Kerry Seamus O Mahoney very kindly invited me to do some very short match reports at local games. As the fellow said, one thing led to another and I was then invited to present programs and as the say the rest is history. My deep involvement over a long span in all aspects of sports has really stood me well.

Having worked with you on Terrace Talk all those years ago, I know how busy a show it is and how vital it is that all goes well, and like all good sporting events you have a great team would you like to tell us about them?

Yes Terrace Talk as I like to refer to it “the listeners program” has a superb back room team. The superb Eileen Moynihan takes hundreds of calls each month at reception and is our link to the world, Sinead Prendergast, always in great form is our sound engineer and her input is vital as we are all aware that mistakes in presentation is not accepted as far as possible. Ciaran o Regan is our new young producer, full of ideas and so willing to work for the show. It was he who put the entry for the PPI win together. He is so willing to learn and has undoubtedly a great future. Ciaran took over from Andrew Morrissey who produced the show for eight years and was

outstanding at his job. It is also so important to state that both Paul Byrne and Fiona Stack of Radio Kerry rarely interfere with our work and this gives us great lee way to expand our own ideas.

I guess without the listeners there would be no awards so how important do you think the LOCAL element is to the Radio Station?

Of course we might as well stay at home and watch TV if the great Kerry listeners were not tuning in. Everywhere I go the feedback from people is simply amazing. People from 8 to 98 want to talk about Terrace Talk and the one vital element I find and love to hear from people is, “ I have no great interest in sport but i never miss Terrace Talk every Monday”. And then we have exiles all over the world who tune. Following the recent three hour Terrace Talk after the All Ireland final, I got an e mail which read. “Weeshie I listened to the show last evening sitting around a camp fire in the bush in Australia surrounded by some Aborigine people near the town of Wagga Wagga. That says it all about Radio Kerry listeners. It’s an amazing station with such a dedicated bunch of wonderful people.

ConneCt | Cover storyThe lifestyle magazine for Kerry

You have partnered many a good commentator through the years have you any special moment in particular you would like to share with our readers?

So many memories etched in my mind. One show we broadcast from the Burlington Hotel in Dublin some years ago I invited Jimmy McGee and Michael o Muircheartaigh to sit in and present the show with me. It was a surreal experience to sit between these two giants of Irish broadcasting, two exemplary gentlemen. It was amazing. Sitting in with the late Liam Higgins was always very special and that last All Ireland final in Croke Park as Kerry won and Liam was dying of cancer, he was so ill and had a morphine pump attached to his body which he used to deaden the pain whenever it hit him. He died two weeks later. It was the bravest thing I have ever seen. I certainly could not have done it. I cried bitter tears that evening when I left him at the Airport Hotel.

Dare I ask how does Weeshie relax and wind down? Is there a relaxing side to Weeshie that you would like to tell the readers all about?

How do I relax Margaret? My wife Joan and children Denise, Carol Ann and Kieran and

granddaughters Lucy and Eva are very calming and comforting influences in my life. I like to go for a few pints in Killarney and talk sport, walk every morning in the magnificent national Park, the bellowing of the stags at the moment, rutting season is in I find very relaxing, I attend a film in town nearly every week, love watching documentaries, reading in bed at night, and presenting my programs on radio Kerry when the preparations are done I fine very relaxing. But at the end of the day I appreciate most of the entire old adage “Health is Wealth”.

Station Manager Fiona Stack tells us about the day to day running of the station. Having won the title 4 out of the last 9 years you must all be doing something very right, what do you attribute this achievement to?

Kerry is a special place with great sense of community. Kerry people are great talkers and storytellers, who have a strong sense of identity and have opinions on sport, news, politics and events in their communities- all mixed in with a great attitude to life and a sense of humour. If Local Radio was going to work anywhere it was in Kerry. As the Voice of the Kingdom we are the means by which the people of Kerry tell their own story and we are proud to play a part in that.

As part of Radio Kerry from the start really what major changes have you seen in the industry over those years and what is Kerry’s secret for success?

We lead the same lives as our listeners and have been here all the events and changes that have happened in Kerry over the last 24 years. The main changes have been the way technology has evolved allowing us to reach listeners in new ways through our website,

apps, and social media. We have developed a training school with the Kerry ETB which allows students learn radio skills but also helps us find new talent. Radio Kerry is the only one of the original local radio stations which has gone on to expand now owning another radio station Shannonside/ Northern Sound. We have gotten involved in off air events such as concerts, Kerry’s Got Talent and wedding fairs and sponsorship of The Ring of Kerry Cycle.

Winning 3 awards at the event must be a great achievement where next for the station?

It’s great for staff to see hard work, commitment and a love for what they do rewarded. In times such as Februarys storms or during a Local Election lots of extra unsocial hours are put in so it’s nice to have a night out when people can feel proud of that. We couldn’t do what we do without the support of listeners and advertisers. Radio Kerry renewed its broadcast license for a further 10 years this year so we hope to continue doing what we do bringing people a comprehensive news and sports service, music, speech programming, requests and competitions – wearing our Kerry colours with pride.

As general manager of such a successful station it must be a busy day each day and I guess no two days are the same, what is your favourite part of the job?

Radio Kerry is live on air from 7am to midnight every day of the year and as you say no two days are the same. I am very grateful for the colleagues I work with who rise to whatever challenge comes our way and are committed to doing the best job they can whatever area of the station they work in. The fact that I started work with Radio Kerry in the newsroom meant I got to know lots of people around the county and I love that in my role as General Manager now I’m still dealing with many of those people. Kerry people have always been very supportive of Radio Kerry and when you say

you are ringing from Radio Kerry you are often pushing an open and welcoming door. It makes us want to do the best job we can even more.

Paul Byrne - Chief Executive of the station

Finally Paul Byrne Chief executive had a few words to tell us of his experience over the years and how proud he is of the staff that make Radio Kerry what it is Paul as Chief Executive of Radio Kerry Group there is more than one station under the umbrella do you often compare and use tips from each individual station to keep the standard of service to the community as good as it is?

Each Radio Station in the group has its own unique identity catering specifically for the area that it broadcasts to. People in Kerry will have different issues and concerns to the people in Monaghan for example. It is important to recognise these differences and to provide a service which is customised for that individual area. This is the key to the huge listenership figures that each station attains. However, items such as station events, promotions and marketing and some features are common to all stations. Once something has proven to be a success in a particular area the template is easily transferrable to the others.

You must be very proud of the team in Kerry and what they have achieved with 3 awards on the night?

We are extremely proud of all our

achievements at Radio Kerry. It is always a source of pride by all staff that the station is recognised for excellence in what we do. The PPI awards are extremely important as it’s recognition that what we do is of the highest standard as decided by our peers in the Industry

The JNLR Results are always showing an increase in listenership to the station, why do you think Radio Kerry has such an appeal to all age groups?

Radio Kerry is a full service station that has its finger on the pulse of all that’s going on in Kerry. Throughout the broadcast day we recognise that the audience changes on an almost hourly basis. We therefore tailor our programmes and content specifically for that available audience. For example our Breakfast Show is very much family orientated and the next programme Kerry Today deals with hard News and Current Affairs issues of the day. We have a broad selection of programmes which we feel covers all tastes and interests within the County

You’re not a Kerry man; you are with the station how many years now? What do you like best about Kerry and its people that make you want to stay as chief Executive of the best local Radio

Station in Ireland?I have been in Kerry now for 11 years and the attraction of the county is simple… the people. Kerry people are intelligent, determined, supportive, inquisitive, and extremely articulate. Because of its geographical location, the County also has its own it has its own traditions and a unique way of doing things. As CEO of Radio Kerry I have the good fortune of meeting numerous people from all walks of life in the county and enjoying every moment of my time here. JJ O Shea was not available to chat with us but we wish him continued success with his programme who brought home silver from the awards. Continued success to Radio Kerry and the team behind it, we look forward to celebrating 25 years with you all in 2015. We would also like to take a moment to reflect on the sad passing of an active team member and colleague Noreen O Reilly, a team worker and a vibrant lady Noreen will be missed by all her colleagues, to her family and friends we offer our condolences and to the team in Radio Kerry it will not be the same without her, may the sod rest lightly on her gentle soul. RIP.

Fáilte romhaibh a chairde, idir óg agus aosta. Many parents are often unsure of what to do when confronted with looking after the dental health of their children. Indeed, looking after a child can be a stressful experience for some first time parents. In this article, I will answer some of the common questions that parents often ask me.

When should I start brushing my child’s teeth? The teeth should be brushed with a soft toothbrush, once they are visible in the mouth. Water alone on the brush-head should be sufficient to clean the teeth, up to about the age of two years old. After that, toothpaste appropriate to their age group can be purchased e.g. 2 – 6 years and over 6 years.

When should I first bring my child for a dental examination? Most children will have 20 baby teeth by the age of 2 ½ years. It is advisable to have their teeth checked on an annual basis from this time onwards. If a child is left until school going age, then problems with decay can go unnoticed until a dental abscess forms, which results in a lot of unnecessary suffering. Also, the formation of good health and good eating habits can be reinforced to both children and parents on a regular basis. It is only natural for us in our busy lifestyle to forget about our oral health. Your dentist should be able to get you back on track if there is anything that you are unsure of.

In my experience, most children enjoy their visits to the dental practice. When they start attending at an early age, they have no inhibitions or fears. Most children are naturally inquisitive and enjoy the experience of having a ‘spin’ on the dental chair. It is often like a game for young children, when they see their parents or siblings having their mouth examined.

It is important to state that if you have a fear of dentistry as a parent, that there is no need to pass this ‘fear’ onto your children. Dentistry has changed so much in the past 40 years or so that the experiences are totally different. Children pick up on the slightest comment at home prior to dental visits and there is an obligation on parents to help their child prepare for a dental visit by using simple but positive language. This not only helps them in the short term, but will be a lifetime benefit for them. Prevention of fear is better than the cure.

Will my child feel pain, if they are having a filling? Children should not feel any pain while receiving routine fillings. The gums are normally numbed with gel or anaesthetic sprays before the injection of anaesthetic, so that the child does not feel the injection. All of the air sprays, drills and suction tubes are shown to children before use. They can even hold them themselves to feel and hear the sounds that they make. This can make them feel quite confident and proud of their achievement when receiving dental treatment. Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh sí.

Beir bua agus beannacht.

Beauty BagInside the

This month we meet the lovely Lucy Kennedy fresh from Late Lunch Live on TV3 , Lucy is the ultimate in Style, she first graced the airwaves with the impossible Podge and Rodge, Now mum to two little treasures we discover how she always manages to look chic and glamorous we ask her for her tips from the contents of her Beauty bag.

What’s your favourite moisturiser, cleanser package or do you mix brands?

I’m a Dermalogica girl. I really love it and have been using the products for years. I use the special cleansing gel followed by Skin smoothing cream

Have you got a particular foundation you like to wear?

Yes, I like to wear ESTEE LAUDER double wear light. It gives you great coverage but isn’t too heavy.

When it comes to your eyes would you have a regime or a particular look that works well for you?

I generally go for the Smokey look. I love smudged dark eye and loads of black kohl liner.

Lips are always important what shades do you feel bring out the best look on you?

Lip-wise, I use RIMMELs EPIC liner and either a Lancôme gloss or CATRICE Maroon 020 (PENNEYS)

Nails… any tips to stop the chipping we all

endure at some time? I’m obsessed with my nails. Painting them and trying to grow them!! My regime is…. Fist layer is Sally Hansen Maximum growth followed by a RIMMEL 60 second varnish. At the moment I love Coralicious. Finally Sally Hansen top coat and I’m done!

Any special tips for our readers?

My tip is to wear the makeup that suits your skin and your eyes. Don’t feel like you have to follow the latest craze. Wear what works. Also, put foundation on your lips before applying liner and lip-stick as it will last longer.

Do you like spa visits? Like every girl, I Love SPA visits but unfortunately I don’t get much time to blow my nose these days as I have 2 smallies aged four and two!! If I get the chance, I always s go for a full body massage and an Indian Head massage. Divine!!!

Until next time

INGREDIENTS

1 kg stewing beef, trimmed of fat 40 g flour, with salt and pepper added 2 large onions, thinly sliced 3 carrots, peeled and sliced2 Garlic cloves, finely chopped1 Parsnip roughly chopped¼ of a turnip, roughly chopped 1 tsp English mustard400 g canned chopped tomatoes 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 sprig of fresh thyme or a pinch of dried1 bay leaf1 tablespoon caster sugar500 ml Guinness olive oil

Cut the meat into 1 inch cubes and toss in the flour. Heat some of the olive oil in a heavy bottomed saucepan (I use cast iron cookware) and fry the beef until nicely browned on all sides. You may have to do this in batches depending on the size of your pan. Remove the meat from the pan and set aside.

Add a little more oil to the pan and gently fry the onions. Deglaze the pan with 50ml of the Guinness.

Add the carrots, turnip, garlic and parsnip. Give a quick stir and add the remaining Guinness, sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, tomatoes and thyme. Bring to the boil, cover and simmer over a low heat for approximately 2 hours or until the meat is tender.

Taste and add salt and pepper if required. Garnish with chopped parsley when serving.

Now that we are well and truly into the Winter, nothing warms the soul better

than a warming bowl of stew.

Beef and Guinness has to be one of my favourite stews. I would often cook this in a slow cooker for 6-8 hours, which

means you have melt in the mouth beef. Cook in a slow cooker follow the method,

but instead of leaving the stew in the saucepan, place the boiling stew into your slow cooker. Serve with mashed potatoes

with the addition of butter, cream and a little creamed horseradish sauce. As

with all stews it always tastes better the following day. It also freezes very well.

CONNECT Style HI AGAIN EVERYONE, WITH OUR TEMPERATURES NOW DROPPED, THIS MONTH I’M GOING TO BE DISCUSSING THE HOTTEST WAYS TO COVER UP WITH A WINTER COAT. WHEN SHOPPING FOR THE SEASONAL WINTER COAT, I DO THINK IT IS BEST TO INVEST IN QUALITY, AS YOU ARE LIKELY TO BE WEARING IT FOR YEARS AND LET’S BE REALISTIC, ABOUT 2/3RDS OF THE YEAR!

Your coat’s personality can often reflect yours, be it the classic black or the more daring red or vibrant green. A coat should suit your lifestyle and ought to be comfortable, practical and flattering.

A full length coat is fabulous but is not very practical if you spend most of your day in the car. Always consider what you will be wearing under your coat and how much clothing you need to keep warm, as everyone feels the cold differently and some women like to wear heavier layers. Allow room for a jumper both in the body and the sleeves of a coat. Let’s move onto the various types of coats around this year, there is a great selection of them around to suit all requirements.

The ‘combi’ is a structured coat that can be made more feminine by adding a colourful scarf or fur collar. It is both stylish and practical with a classy edge. The combi is ideal for any shape or size, as it tends to be made slightly oversized. The faux fur is huge this season and is not only warm and luxurious but can be used for both day and night. The classic black and winter cream being joined by chic silver. We cannot talk about coats without mentioning the cape. There is the fully buttoned up version that is

both warm and versatile or the wrap style cape that can be worn over a jacket for that sophisticated look. Capes are available this season either plain or patterned with hounds tooth being one of the hottest trends Please don’t feel guilty if you can’t decide between the fantastic range of coats out there, as you may like to have a coat for day and a coat for play.

As our coats get so much use both types can be worth investing in.

I hope this has given you some tips for your next shopping expedition, Till next time,

Happy shopping,

BEST REGARDS,

Danny

7th November 2014Strictly Coming Dancing Listowel StyleDon’t miss a great fundraiser happening in the Listowel Arms Hotel in Listowel on Friday the 7th November 2014 in aid of a local charity Kerry Parents & Friends Association. The idea was born in order to raise needed funds for their centre which is situated on the outskirts of the town. As most charity funding has been cut the organisers thought this would be a novel idea and appeal to the public. With approximately 14 couples taking part and most of them are well known faces from the locality and surrounding towns and villages. Training is taking place twice a week at Debbie Driscoll’s dance studio in Tralee and the entrants are working really hard at rehearsals and fine tuning in between. Each couple has a different routine, be it the foxtrot, bossanova, tango or salsa and they are being very tight lipped about their particular choice of dance and, with four weeks to go, it is beginning to come together for them. It’s Listowel’s first time to host a strictly event, creating a great buzz around the town. James O’Flaherty from Lixnaw is co-ordinating the show and might have a celebrity or two on the judging panel!! It promises to provide a great night’s entertainment with each couple bringing their own supporters to, hopefully, help them past the post on the night!. So go ahead and support a great night out for a great cause.

MY 10 STEP INTRO PROGRAM TO EXERCISE1. Take the far away spot. Walking from the farthest corner of the parking lot will burn a few calories. If it’s a parking garage, head for the roof and use the stairs.2. Walk to the next stop. If you take a bus or train, don’t wait at the nearest stop. Walk to the next one. Or, at the end of your journey, get off a stop early and finish up on foot.3. Adopt someone as your walking, jogging, or biking buddy. Adding a social element to exercise helps many people stick with it.4. Be part of the fun. Adults shouldn’t miss a chance to jump into the fray if kids are playing. Climbing on the jungle gym (be careful!) and swinging on a swing will strengthen muscles and bones and set a good example.5. Put on your dancing shoes. Exercise doesn’t have to be done in a straight line. Dancing can get your heart going and helps with balance. Dance classes tend to have lower dropout rates than gyms. Or just turn up the volume at home and boogie.6. Clean house. Even if you have a cleaning service, you can take responsibility for vacuuming a couple of rooms yourself. Fifteen minutes burns around 80 calories. Wash some windows and do some dusting and you’ve got a pretty decent workout — and a cleaner house.7. Grow a garden. No matter how green the thumb, the digging, the planting, the weeding, and the picking will ramp up your activity level and exercise sundry muscles.8. Use a push mower. Even if you have a large lawn, pick a small part of it to mow in the old-fashioned way. You get a nice work out, you’re not burning any gas, and it’s usually quieter. The same reasoning favors the rake over the leaf blower.9. Think small. Small bouts of activity are better than knocking yourself out with a workout that will be hard to replicate.10. Be a stair master. Take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator whenever you can. It’s good for your legs and knees, and your cardiovascular health will benefit from the little bit of huffing and puffing. Don’t overdo. One flight at a time.

WHY WE SHOULD AND WHY WE DON’T EXERCISEYou already know that exercise is good for you. What you may not know is just how good — or exactly what qualifies as exercise.

A deluge of studies has documented the health benefits of exercise. What’s impressive about the research, aside from the sheer volume, is the number of conditions exercise seems to prevent, ameliorate, or delay. We’re used to hearing about exercise fending off heart attacks. If you’re physically active, your heart gets trained to beat slower and stronger, so it needs less oxygen to function well; your arteries get springier, so they push your blood along better; and your levels of “good” HDL cholesterol go up. It’s also not much of a surprise that physical activity helps prevent diabetes. Muscles that are used to working stay more receptive to insulin, the hormone that ushers blood sugar into cells, so in fit individuals blood sugar levels aren’t as likely to creep up.But exercise as a soldier in the war against cancer? It seems to be, and on several fronts: breast, colon, and

endometrial, perhaps ovarian. Some research suggests that it takes quite a lot of exercise to make a difference: four to seven hours of moderate to vigorous activity a week. Three studies have found that if you’ve had colon cancer or breast cancer, physical activity reduces the chances of it coming back. To top things off, moving the body seems to help the brain. Several studies have found that exercise can reduce the symptoms of depression, and it changes the brain in ways similar to antidepressant medications. In old age, physical activity may delay the slide of cognitive decline into dementia, and even once that process has started, exercise can improve certain aspects of thinking. Most evidence suggests that the choice of the kind of activity is far less important than whether to be active at all. But genetic explanations for behaviors like exercising and not exercising only go so far. Research has shown, not surprisingly, that active children are more likely to have parents who encouraged them to be that way.

The ultimate question is how many sleeps to Santa!!! The worst thing we can do is panic. The month of November needs to be full of structure and routine. It is important to prioritize our “to do” list....Healthy eating and exercise need to be on that list, they need to be seen

as a necessity not a choice. If you are away from home you need a “Christmas Survival Kit” with water, fruit, nuts and crackers. Watch for stress signs.....if you feel tired, irritated, anxious or depressed or not getting enough sleep and you feel like you’re running out of time...that’s when we can reach for the chocolate bars and cappuccinos!!!Remember when you say “Yes” to something’s we ultimately say “No” to ourselves. Be mindful of what you eat and drink at parties...we can sabotage all our good work by careless choices....We all love to give nice presents but the best present you can give yourself is the one of health...remember if you don’t look after yourself now you will have nowhere to live in the future!!!!You will certainly enjoy Christmas even more if you don’t neglect yourself....Take it day by day. Good Luck

If you are attending a specialist he/she will most likely have the benefit of a referral letter from a primary care doctor. Your primary care doctor does not this advantage so how you provide information is important. Before you attend• As soon as you receive an appointment date / time put it in your diary or wherever you will be able to remind yourself. If you cannot attend it is very courteous to let the clinic know- it is very likely there are others waiting for an appointment.• Make sure that you are clear on the reason you are attending the GP or specialist. If you have been on a long waiting list your symptoms may have changed or new symptoms may have developed. It may be hard to believe but sometimes people can’t remember why they were referred!!!!• Write out your symptoms- when they started, how often they happen, do they vary in intensity, are there other associated symptoms that you need to mention. Perhaps rehearse in your mind what you need to say. Your appointment slot may have a specific time allocation so trying to be concise is valuable. Unfortunately not all problems can be resolved in one consultation.• If you feel that it would be nice to have moral support you might like to bring someone. On the other hand, bear in mind intimate issues may come up that you would prefer to keep between you and your doctor- this particularly happens in areas of women’s / sexual health. If English is not your first language it

is important to work out who will assist with translation; they must translate accurately. Bear in mind the questions asked may be intimate and you may not want a friend or partner to be involved.• If you have been to another doctor who performed tests that could be relevant make sure to bring copies / results. This can save time in repeating tests.• Occasionally a family history of serious medical conditions may be relevant. The Day has Come!• If you feel there may be a reason for not attending i.e. your period has started, ring and check with a nurse. Many aspects of the consultation can still happen. If you have a condition which could be infectious such as chicken pox or gastroenteritis the clinic might like to change your scheduled slot so let them know. • A healthcare system cannot be rigid and clinics can run late. This is usually beyond the control of staff- a doctor may have been called to an emergency. A person in an appointment ahead of you may have had a complex problem, required counselling or have become upset. • If you don’t understand the information being given to you do ask for clarification. It may need to be explained differently, written information may be available to take home and read or a follow up chat with a nurse can help.• Always be reassured that doctors, nurses and support staff in a medical setting must maintain confidentiality so “what is said in the surgery stays in the surgery”. Sometimes patients choose to keep some facts such as having had fertility treatment or a termination of pregnancy from their doctor. We would recommend telling and discussing how it can be sensitively documented.• If you are having an intimate examination ask if you would like to have a chaperone.• As you leave it can be useful to reiterate to your doctor what you think they said.

Back up to your Doctor Consultation• If you require written information ask about appropriate websites rather than going to random Google searches.• If surgery or another intervention is

recommended it can be reasonable to ask for a “cooling off” period to consider it.

Is a Doctor the only person I will meet?Nowadays healthcare is regularly provided by a team of staff. Most GP practices have Practice Nurses who are skilled and certified in areas such as smear taking, maternity care or diabetic care. Consultants and Specialists also are supported by Nurse Specialists. Some doctors employs Health Care Assistants and Phlebotomists ( a person who takes blood).

Physiotherapists and dieticians may also be asked to be involved in your care. It does not mean your doctor is abandoning you but rather, that he/she believes another healthcare provider can have a positive input into caring for you.

So please do not put off going to your doctor because of fear. We are there to help. Good Luck.

Going to a medical visit is not on most people’s Top 3 “want to do” things. It can be an overwhelming experience, you may be worried about getting bad news and as a result you may become anxious prior to attending. In this situation people may not organise their thoughts and forget crucial pieces of information. This can lead to the consultation may not be as fruitful as you would wish.

Just in case you haven’t realised already, I am a teenager. I just felt the need to clarify this just in case that you thought that I was a middle aged woman with an amazing skin cream. I also felt the need to clarify this because I obviously have what is known as a “teenage perception” on life.

People reading this, you have either lived through your teenage years, are currently living through your teenage years or you have it all ahead of you ( oh boy, you have no idea what you’re in for)… But with any of these options you have some idea what teenage life is all about.

Troublemakers ?

People who have not become teenagers, usually view teens as the troublemakers. That was my view anyway. If anything ever went wrong in the world, it was the damn teenagers fault. I am talking anything from graffiti to murders, all the blame went to the group of rebellious teenagers in the corner. What is even more strange is that no one ever corrected me…

Top of the Food Chain

People who are currently teenagers, really have no clue what is going on. We kind of tend to see ourselves at the top of the food-chain as it were. Anyone younger than us is cute and anyone any few years older than us just doesn’t understand.

That, for the majority of the time, applies to our parents as well. Except for you Mom, I am one of the rare few that think that you are still in know. Thanks to my guidance….

The adults of the world can have many different views.

One of them being the same view as the children. One thing goes wrong, you look to the rebellious teenagers with the funny haircuts and apparently “grunge” clothing. I am guessing that is where the original view came from…

Then there is the parental view of the world, which varies from one extreme to the next. Either “It could never be my child, she is perfect” or you hear them shouting someones very long full name up the stairs when any thing goes wrong.

Being a teenager myself, I can happily put all these different kinds of people into categories, because, let’s face it, teenagers are always right.

No, no interruptions, the writer of the article says that teenagers are always right, so teenagers are always right.

Until next month . . .

Stay happy

As part of our Launch of Connect Publications this month we gave one lucky person attending the event a full page business profile, our lucky winner was Mairead Moriarty of Ashmore Learning solutions so we are delighted to present to our readers Maireads business and where she is at present with it.

Ashmore Learning Solutions evolved from a passion for teaching and a love of all things educational. Having taken early retirement from teaching Home Economics after twenty years in Presentation Secondary School, Milltown, Co. Kerry, little did I think that just over two years later I would be embracing every aspect of the world of business.Prompted by my experiences in the classroom I design and produce Posters and Jigsaws aimed at

improving literacy and numeracy and linking to the print rich environment. These resources are meeting the needs of the multiple intelligences in the classroom. We all learn in different ways and the more variety in presenting information the better so that all learning styles are catered for i.e. Auditory, Visual or Kinesthetic. The initial sales were so exciting, there was such a buzz!! Each new order kept the adrenaline flowing, I wanted this to continue. A whole new world of business experiences was opening up to me.Ashmore Learning Solutions is now supplying these educational resources in English and Irish throughout Ireland. Schools or individuals can order and pay on line, delivery by courier reaching them in one to two days. It is my hope that not only schools benefit by using these quality resources but also parents and families by introducing them to their children from an early age.

Future plans, well anything is possible, the business is developing at a pace that suits me and in my time. I am now working on a challenging project to develop the business overseas. I think that no matter what stage you are at in life it is never too late to change direction and explore new avenues and career paths. If you have a business idea, follow your dreams and remember that “To be successful, you have to have your heart in your business, and your business in your heart” (Sr. Thomas Watson)

Legal Compliance

Eamonn Fitzmaurice and Jack O’Connor showed powerful leadership skills this year through their commitment to the Kerry Senior and Minor teams. Successful leaders provide specific direction and then closely monitor these directions in action by the

members of their team. A good leader is also a good coach and will explain decisions as they are made and support progression along the way. A good leader will facilitate and support people’s efforts whilst sharing responsibility for decision making with them. The main task of leaders is to promote a good feeling in those they lead. This occurs when a leader creates resonance and is intelligent about emotions. Emotional Intelligence is described as a person’s ability to respond to emotions, the emotions of others as well as one’s own. Emotional Intelligence is conveyed as self-awareness, managing emotions, motivating oneself, empathy and the ability to handle relationships. In today’s Business Environment emotional intelligence is considered a vital ingredient in leading your employees. Good emotional awareness leads to improved staff interaction in the workplace, promotes trust and integrity in the workplace and could assist the organisation in retaining talent in the long-term.

In becoming conscious of emotional intelligence in the workplace, the first step is to become aware of emotions. Emotions can be perceived from the voice, face or the body. To be mindful and able to perceive these emotions accurately is a starting point for achieving a good understanding of emotions. Non-verbal emotions include expressions on the face such as happiness, sadness, anger, disgust and fear. These expressions and emotions are universally recognised and can help bridge cultural and language barriers. Body language and the tone, pitch and volume of our voice are other telling factors of our emotions. When we react emotionally to something; it is evident that’s our attention is asserted. Emotions, therefore, have a huge impact on the decisions that we make. Emotions are a speedy response to a situation and encourage a reaction which inspires decisions. Emotions play a huge part in the actions and creativity used daily in the workplace. Stimulating emotional input in the workplace can direct thinking towards the aspects of the business that are of most importance.

Leadership and Emotional Intelligence

As the dust settles on the Budget it is clear that the impending effect of water charges should be wiped out by the modest reduction in overall taxations for most individuals. Overall, it was a Budget aimed primarily at individuals and families, rather than businesses in general.

Tourism & Hospitality SectorThe real gain for this sector is the retention of the 9% VAT rate albeit with a Ministerial warning. This sector remains a key driver of jobs in Kerry and a return to a 13.5% VAT would have been detrimental to many small restaurants, cafes, accommodation providers, hairdressing services and other businesses owners who benefit from the reduced rate.

FarmingThis was a significant budget for Farming; the focus on encouraging better utilisation of land should open opportunities for many young farmers in Kerry wishing to expand. The increase in the income tax exemption thresholds for leased land will encourage many older farmers to lease land and over longer periods. In addition, the ability to claim Retirement Relief (Capital Gains Tax) when land is eventually sold, after leasing, is hugely important. The restructuring of Agricultural Relief to focus on active farmers may cause inheritance tax issues for other beneficiaries. The conditions (yet unpublished) may yet hinder the transfer of family farms, which qualify currently for Agricultural Relief 90% reduction.

LandlordsThe extension of the Home Renovation Scheme to include work done on landlords properties is a very positive move. This should assist the slow recovery already taking place in the construction sector. A landlord can get relief for a maximum of €30,000 for work on a rented property which would equate to a tax credit of €4,050(13.5%).

Self EmployedThere was a sting in the tail for many self-employed who as a result of USC increase to 11% for income over €100,000, could leave them on a marginal tax rate of 55%, which unfairly leaves them worse off when compared to PAYE employees who have a top marginal tax rate of 52%.

Business Investment & FinancingThe Employment of Investment Incentive (EII) has seen more amendments and increases in the level of investment which can be raised. The true test of the changes will be in the need for elimination of the onerous criteria and administrate burden which has severely limited its use of the EII to date.

Mairéad deBláca, the visionary and designer behind Mairéad deBláca jewellery has been creating silver and gold jewellery for over a year. Her jewellery is inspired by her love of nature which she initially captured through her art. ‘I take pride in my jewellery and I love the fact that others are inspired by it. It’s a beautiful thing to be able to bring a smile to someone’s face. It drives me to be more creative and to pay attention to the world around me,’ says Maireád. I haven’t been formally trained, but have always has a creative streak. Nor did I set out to start a business, it found me. In jewellery, I see a form of expression and a platform to create, but there is something more to it than just art. It sparks an emotion and makes you feel. People never forget the moment a special of jewellery was given to them by someone, or who a piece they bought for themselves makes them feel. This memory lasts a lifetime and is passed down

through the generations. Your inspiration:The world and nature is a wondrous place. Of you look close enough you will find inspiration everywhere. ChallengesI suspected that it would be hard but I hadn’t realised how much there was to learn, especially when it is not your background. You

learn by doing and doing is a challenge. Taking the leap and trusting yourself is the hardest part. Finding and support system, mentors, and partners is crucial. If you have a great idea and strongly

believe in it, don’t let anything including yourself hold you back. Life is too short for excuses. Go for it. Embrace the success and learn from the failures. Find your own voice. Be real, be personable and be authentic.

The 6th Annual Killarney Rotary Club Afternoon Tea on Saturday was fantastic. The fashion show was organised FREE by local multi award winning Kerry designer Clodagh Irwin Owens who also showcased her latest collection which proved very popular with the guests. Annburys Tralee which is owned by Killarney native Danny Leane who himself won stylist of the year and who stocks sizes 14-28 also showed their Autumn Winter Collection. This ensured that all ladies in attendance were catered for as all shapes, sizes and styles were covered. The models also wore jewellery from the beautiful jewellery collections which are available at Brian de Staic Jewellers Kerry. The models gave their time for FREE and the sound equipment provided by Mike Neeson and music on the day provided by Killian Foley were also provided FREE of charge. This generosity by people ensures that all the monies raised for the chosen charity will go to the charity. Guests travelled especially from London, Tullamore, Limerick, Cork, Dingle, Tralee, Killorglin and also locals were in attendance at this popular sell out event which had a waiting list for well over a week leading up to the event.
