MISSION Following the Way of Jesus, we celebrate inspirational worship; create life-changing experiences for children, youth, families, and individuals; and practice meaningful congregational care. While respecting our diversity, we courageously advocate for justice and mercy, and intentionally respond to the needs of our community and the world. THE MESSENGER S HARING G OOD N EWS AUGUST 2019 (continued on page 2) Dear friends, What a joy it is to spend my first summer in York! After an interminably long, cold spring, it's been such a pleasure to observe families at the beach, to mix and mingle with tourists enjoying their vacations, and to see new faces in worship on Sundays. There's a different feeling in the air in the summer. With the sunshine and warmer temperatures, people are lighter, happier, more peaceful, and more willing to have new adventures. In that spirit, we have some new opportunities for you! We're doing this, in part, because at the conclusion of the alternative Thursday Worship service, the surveys we received showed that the aspect of “community” was most appreciated by respondents. While Thursday Worship never really achieved the goal of providing worship for those who don't go to traditional worship; it did provide a very successful and deeply meaningful small group ministry. Since it's conclusion in May, you've had the opportunity to gather to paint kindness rocks, to march and work a booth at Portsmouth Pride, and to come enjoy concerts on the Parish Green. In August, we'll begin a spiritual book club (details follow this article). The much-loved “Dine with Nine” supper club will make a highly- anticipated come back in the near future. Soon, we'll have more information about how you can join 8 others for a potluck and the chance to deepen connections. It's no secret that I find the beach a tremendously spiritual place and I'd love to have you join me for a leisurely walk at Long Sands! Depending on interest and availability, we can go first thing in the morning, in the afternoon, or in the early evening. If we can gather a group (friends are welcome to join), I'll start the gathering by reading something inspirational and thought provoking. Please indicate interest/availability by emailing me directly ([email protected]) or by calling 363-3758.

A View From the Bench Happy Musical New Year! The Sanctuary Choir will be celebrating Communion and Epiphany on the first Sunday of 2015 by offering Bob Chilcott's hauntingly beautiful new setting of Christina Rosetti's "In the Bleak Midwinter." My favorite line of the famous poem is: "If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part. What can I give Him? Give my heart." On January 11 the Fourth Street Jazz Choir (the adult vocal jazz ensemble from Dover which I conduct) will be our special musical guests. They will be performing Bob Chicott's "A Little Jazz Mass" incorporating the five traditional mass movements into our service. Honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., "Gospel Music Sunday" will feature special music by the Sanctuary Choir and the Bow Tie Guys. Our Children's and Youth Choirs will sing on the final Sunday in January. On that same day, the Seacoast Community Chorus (SCC) will present its Winter Concert at 3:PM. Several members of the Sanctuary Choir belong to SCC and will be performing "All Creatures Great and Small." Music of Mendelssohn, John Rutter, Randall Thompson will be in the repertoire. Joseph Martin's setting of the classic children's story "The Song of Wisdom from Old Turtle" will be the highlighted piece. Finally, during these chilly and dark days of January, let's remember the song of the Christmas angels: "Glory to God in the highest and peace to God's people on earth!" Blessings and thanks, WSP
