Weekly Sedrah: Koraḥ Numbers 16:1 — 18:32 (Triennial: Numbers 16:20 — 17:24)
Koraḥ leads a rebellion against Moses and Aaron. G-d causes the earth to open,
swallowing Koraḥ and his followers. These deaths lead to grumbling among the people, further provoking G-d’s wrath. A plague befalls the people, killing many. G-d arranges for a divine sign – the flowering of Aaron’s rod – to affirm his priesthood and quiet the people. G-d reiterates the duties of priests and Levites.
(Siddur Sim Shalom)
Haftarah: 1 Samuel 11:14 — 12:22
Samuel was the last and greatest hero of the tumultuous pre-monarchical period in Israel’s history. He served as military leader, judge, and prophet, and laid the foundations for uniting the twelve tribes into a religious nation. The Sedrah deals with Koraḥ’s attempt to replace Moses in the leadership of the people, and in the Haftarah the people arty to displace G-d as their sovereign and want instead to have an earthly king. [In the Sedrah] Moses appeals to G-d, while [in the Haftarah] Samuel appeals to the people. (The Torah: A Modern Commentary)

Weekly Sedrah: Ḥukkat
Numbers 19:1 — 22:1 (Triennial: Numbers 20:1 — 21:10)
G-d ordains the sacrifice of a red heifer to purify those having contact with the dead. Miriam dies. When the people complain about a lack of water, Moses strikes a rock, instead of speaking to it as G-d instructs; consequently, G-d informs Moses that he may not enter the Promised Land. The Israelites skirt Edom when it refuses them safe passage. Aaron dies. After conquering the Canaanites and Amorites, Israel encamps in Moab, across the Jordan from Jericho. (Siddur Sim Shalom)
Haftarah: Judges 11:1 — 11:33
The turbulent history of Israel between the death of Joshua and the time of the prophet Samuel is covered by the Book of Judges. It describes the years during which the tribes struggled with Canaanites and Philistines and then sank roots into the land assigned to them. The Sedrah recounts Israel’s campaign against Arad and the vow the people made when the campaign began. The Haftarah records how Jephthah, one of the judges, made a vow which he believed obligated him to sacrifice his daughter. The text reports the terrible dilemma but does not definitively state that she was indeed sacrificed. (The Torah: A Modern Commentary)
