I’m a recent convert to a Pro-Choice perspective. Now, let me beclear: I’ve always supported women’sright to reproductive choice, but that’s notwhat I’m talking about here. I’m talkingabout the power of our personal choices, not only for ourselves but also for every-one around us. While life moves along at arapid clip and sometimes feels like it hap-pens to us, our choices about how we dealwith life make all the difference.
I had a pivotal experience this summerthat reminded me about the power of choice when I visited my fa-ther and uncle in their Wilmington, NC retirement community. One afternoon, we had a leisurely lunch in the dining room, over-looking the lake and its fountains. We sat at a round table, my fa-ther and his wife on my left and my uncle and his wife on my right. As we gathered, I asked my father’s wife, “How are you?” Her re-sponse was the same as always: “Oh, well, should I tell you aboutmy myriad troubles?” I then turned to my right and asked myuncle the same question. His response was, likewise, the same asalways: “Life couldn’t be better!”
The complete contrast between their answers to the same ques-tion was striking. They live in the same wonderfully vibrant com-munity, their health is similar, both have supportive friends andfamily. Yet one displays an infinitely positive outlook and the otherdoes not. What’s the difference?
I’ve concluded that the difference is simply a question of choice. Two famous thinkers wrote about such choice. Carl Jung said, “Itall depends on how we look at things, and not how they are inthemselves.” Viktor Frankl, wrote, “Between stimulus and re-sponse, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose ourresponse. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”
My beloved elders exemplified the impact of choice in their re-spective outlooks on life. My uncle chooses daily… hourly… to seehis life as full and he is happy and content. I’ve decided to emulatehim and choose to be happy. What will your choice be?
President’s Message:My mission that last weekend of summer was to clear clutter andto reorganize several rooms of the house. This is not my forte. All too often I derail my own efforts, pour-ing over memories evoked by cards, pho-tos or other objects. This time theidentified treasures included some mes-sages from you - my Beth Israel commu-nity. They were from the happiest andsaddest events of my life - the birth of mydaughter, the death of my father, the oc-casion of my marriage. I thought aboutthe power of community to heighten joyand to soften sorrow through presence, prayer and partying.
The decluttering took place in the midst of another summer proj-ect - the exploration of High Holiday themes and texts. Thesereadings underscored the power of community to transform ourlives.
In a few days we will gather together for Rosh Hashanah andYom Kippur, known as the Days of Awe (Yamim Noraim). Whatmakes these days so awesome - both fearful and inspiring - is thefocus on our mortality and vulnerability in ways that we gener-ally avoid. In the deepest prayer of the morning we look to thefuture and starkly acknowledge that we are powerless to chooseour fate. After the long list of possible circumstances that en-hance, diminish or extinguish life, we chant the refrain “teshu-vah, tefillah, tzedakah” will avert the severity of the decree. What does it mean?
The decree refers to whatever fate awaits us, the part of life thatwe cannot control. The severity refers to how difficult we findthat fate. And the core is that these three concepts - teshuvah, tefillah and tzedakah - can transform our experience of our fateand transform our lives. The metaphor of the book of life is strik-ing. We are not only actors in this drama, we are co-authors withGod as our attitudes and our choices shape our character andeach chapter in the book of life. Here is how.
Teshuvah is often translated as repentance and refers to the actof looking inward, reviewing our deeds and making amendswhere we have fallen short. The ten days between RoshHashanah and Yom Kippur are called the 10 days of teshuvah -days of repairing wrongs and seeking forgiveness. In teshuvahwe look backward to fix brokenness and look forward to set apositive direction for the year to come. Teshuvah also means re-turning - to God and to the goodness in our own souls.
Tefillah is prayer, taking the time to acknowledge the sacred, toengage theological concerns and to cultivate awe and gratitude.Jewish prayer is done most often collectively, inviting us to tran-scend loneliness and to enjoy the comfort, creativity and conso-lation offered by community.
Tzedakah is often translated as charity but it means so muchmore. The root is tzedek - justice - and it calls for us to reach outto others, to attend to that which cannot be ignored. We needone another and the world needs us to engage in acts of caringand generosity, as we cultivate peace, justice and healing.
Rabbi’s Message
This holiday season does not insist that we clear the clutter fromour homes but it does call for an ordering of priorities. The call toengage in teshuvah, tefillah and tzedakah directs us to engagewith life and with others. We are not called to be perfect but weare commanded to right our wrongs and to cultivate spiritualityand generosity.
At the time of this writing my possessions and mementos are notyet in order but I am committed to getting my life, my deeds andmy relationships in order. Let’s support one another in this holywork and use this next year to build deeper connections to ourcommunity. In so doing we will soften whatever blows life mightdeliver and enhance the joys that come our way so that they areas sweet as an apple dipped in honey.
Shanah tovah, I wish you a good and sweet year. Thank you forbeing my community

Hello everyone,As we enter into a new year I wanted toshare with you all what a blessing it has beenfor me to serve as your Associate Rabbi aspart of your clergy team. I have felt so wel-comed and privileged to davven and singwith you, learn with you, and to walk withyou in some of your joys and challenges.I'm looking forward to continuing to serveyou this coming year as well!
As the high holiday season invites us to reflect on our lives I amdrawn to the sage's Hillel advice of "If I am not for myself, who willbe for me. But if I am only for myself who am I? (Ethics of ourSages 1:14)." Our involvement in community always requires a bal-ance of finding a balance of being aware and nurturing our ownspiritual and emotional needs while also being willing to step up toserve the greater whole. My hope for the coming year is that we allfind the balance we need to continue to deepen and enhance thecaring community that you have all created while we bring thefullness and wholeness of ourselves to this enterprise. May we allbe blessed with sweetness, health, connection, and growth in thecoming year!

PLEASE HELP FEED THE HUNGRYMahatma Gandhi said “There are people in the world so hungry that G-D cannot appear to them except in the form ofbread.” That’s a sobering thought at our High Holidays. More people need help than you think, and it’s not just the home-less. “Today, there are 76,080 men, women and children in Delaware County who struggle with hunger every day” accord-ing to Philabundance. In late August, the Media Food Bank, according to their Facebook page, welcomed 114 families, thehighest weekly number since last December.
A core value of our synagogue is feeding the hungry in our community. This we do through our regular meals program atthe Upper Darby Life Center and, at our holidays, by providing critical food donations to the Media Food Bank. The HighHolidays begin on the evening of October 2nd, and the Social Action Committee of Beth Israel is again collectingfood for the Media Food Bank. Your participation is easy. Please bring non-perishable food items, such as cans, boxes, orpouches, to the synagogue when you come for services. Please also consider buying highly valued items like infant for-mula or canned fish or meat. These items are a welcome supplement to the boxes of cereal or pasta. BI’s Social ActionCommittee, throughout the High Holy Days, will gather and deliver the food to the food bank.
MOST-NEEDED FOODSThe Basic List:Meals in a can (stew, chili, soup)Tuna and canned meatPeanut butterCanned foods with pop-top lidsLow-sugar cereals100% fruit juices in single serving boxesCanned fruit packed in juiceCanned vegetables (low salt)

Alternatively (or in addition), you may wish to make a donation to MAZON. Envelopes for donations to MAZON, which arelocated in the foyer, will be stapled to the bags which are made available for your use.
Our congregation is a special place because of programs like this. Thank you.

Social Action Food Service, August 29, 2016Over 200 people lined up at the Life Center in Upper Darby for the SocialAction Committee’s Food Service on August 29. Despite the continued, blazing heat, the team of servers kept up a fast pace to dish up “firsts” andover 50 second helpings for the diners. The Beth Israel serving team com-prised Stu Pittel, Susan Klein, Yoon Ahn and her daughters Lauren and Jor-dan Isaacs, Adam Nichols, John Greenstine and Joe Deutsch. Your manyentrees, which included a wealth of chicken, pasta, vegetables and greensalads, plus hard cooked eggs and fresh fruit, more than met the challengeof the surprisingly large crowd that greeted us that night. Our thanks toeveryone who cooked, baked, grilled, boiled, shopped and donated forthat effort. Our next Food Service is Monday, October 31st. If you’d like todonate food or volunteer to serve on that date, please contact LynnCashell ([email protected]) (610) 543-6073.

The T-Shirt Memorial Comes to Beth IsraelSeveral members of our Beth Israel family have lost a loved one to gun violence. Many more of us have in some way beentouched by this epidemic. Please join us and Heeding God’s Call to End Gun Violence as we erect a vivid reminder of thecost of gun violence on the front lawn of BI. On Sunday, October 30th at 12:00PM we will erect the T-Shirt Memorial toLives Lost to Gun Violence. You may have seen the memorial in churchyards around the area; it is a simple but com-pelling demonstration of the scope of the carnage wrought by gun violence.
Your help to set up, dedicate and take down the memorial is greatly needed. Setting it up on October 30 will involve driving steel rods into theground and dressing the tee shirts on supportingpipes. Each shirt bears the name of someone whoselife was taken. One week later, Sunday, November 6at 12:15PM, a dedication service will be held. Finally, on November 13 at 12:00PM, we will take itdown. Your participation in any or all of these eventswill be a blessing. There will be something thateveryone can do, regardless of physical ability. Please be a part of Beth Israel’s stand against thesenseless loss of life in our county. NEWS FROM HIAS/PAOn October 31st, Judi Baker-Bernstein will retire after 18 years as executive director of Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society/Pennsylvania (HI-ASPA) although she will remain involved with special projects. Over the past 5+ years, BI has welcomed Judi and her colleagues tospeak on exactly how the Jewish response to displaced persons translates into action.
HIASPA was selected by BI’s Hebrew School as its Mitzvah Mall recipient one year , while the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College alsoprovides interns to HIASPA.
HIASPA began over 100 years ago resettling Jewish refugees from Europe’s pogroms. As the flood of displaced Jews from the formerSoviet Union came to a trickle in the 1990’s, HIASPA and its parent organization, HIAS, (headquartered in New York) shifted efforts tonon-Jews from Africa, Asia, Latin America & the Middle East. HIAS’ services have always been available to people of all races, colors, creeds & sexual orientation.
Today, HIASPA is very involved with unaccompanied Central American Minors who live in detention centers near Reading and Easton.HIASPA partners with the Nationalities Services Center to resettle Syrian refugees in the United States. They are amongst only 7 U.S.agencies with such permission, though America’s conflicting responses to the Syrian crisis has resulted in resettling less than 3,000 ofthe estimated 11 million Syrian refugees since the civil war broke out in 2011.
According to the The United Nations High Commission on Refugees (which sets worldwide quotas) there are 4.9 million Syrian refugeesoutside of Syria and 6.6 million internally displaced Syrians. Most are in Turkey & Greece.HIASPA’s resettlement services include legal counsel, language training, job skills, citizenship preparation, housing, and family reunifi-cation.
The imperative to “welcome the stranger” is HIAS' mission. Since 2010, HIASPA and the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for PublicHealth/Primary Care Physician Network, have partnered at a unique health clinic to provide comprehensive and critical health care tonewly arrived refugees.
This past spring, Rabbi Linda tapped me to become BI’s liaison to HIASPA for Congregational Support. This overly fancy title means I amyour “go to” person when you want to know how you can help globally displaced people. Whatever you need to feel like you are part ofthe solution—ask me. You can also speak to HIASPA directly or the individuals at BI who give generously of their skills volunteering forHIASPA. There are approximately 50 Jewish congregations in the United States that lend financial and non-financial support to HIAS. Inaddition, many non-Jewish faith-based organizations partner with HIAS. The group I am liaison to is comprised of other religious organi-zations throughout the Delaware Valley. http://hiaspa.org/want-to-help

Supporting Black Lives Matter (BLM) & Supporting Israel: A Jewish ConversationRabbi Linda
A coalition of organizations associated with the Black Lives Matter (BLM) Movement issued a platform statement entitledA Vision for Black Lives: Policy Demands for Black Power, Freedom, and Justice. Most of the platform addresses issues thatare consistent with the values of Reconstructionist Judaism, such as the problems of structural racism, bias in law enforce-ment, economic inequality, LGBT rights and other pertinent issues. Painfully, however, the platform also speaks about Is-rael and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in ways that are deeply troubling to many in the Jewish community and beyond.
Many groups, including the wider Reconstructionist movement, have put forth statements in response to this platform. Asyou may imagine the responses are as diverse as the Jewish community.
On Shabbat Shuvah at services, Saturday October 8th, we will have our own Jewish conversation about these matters. Wewill look at the platform and discuss several of the responses from different cohorts in the American Jewish Community.
My hope is that we can find a way to support BLM while addressing the problematic passages that must not be ignored.
