This is a Public Service Reminder…

Lent begins on Wednesday.

Let’s get the “mechanics” of Lent out of the way first. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days set aside for fasting. The guidelines for fasting will be in various publications so I will not go into the details here.

The remaining Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence. Traditionally, Catholics abstain from eating (flesh) meat on Fridays during Lent to honor Christ who gave up his flesh on a Friday. The entire season of Lent focuses on the three aspects of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving (charity).

Our readings today give us even more to think about during Lent. From the reading in Leviticus: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” From the reading in Matthew: “But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

Sometimes I think it is easier to just “do” the sacrifices and gloss over the real challenge to love those around us that are not easy to love. But the readings today certainly point towards working on our relationships with others as the task before us. In the end, however, it is not a situation of either/or…it is a situation of both/and. We can make our sacrifices and work on loving our neighbor at the same time. In fact, our prayers and sacrifices can be directed toward those we find the hardest to love.

And remember…The Lord is kind and merciful…we should be too!

Deacon Mike

Phase II Capital Campaign Our 2017 Capital Campaign had multiple phases with each being considered once funds were received and the previous phase was completed. Phase I (Church Interior) was completed and under budget. The major construction component in Phase II provides for additional “family friendly” bathrooms with improved accessibility for individuals with disabilities, walkers, wheelchairs, etc. We received funds from our parish members in our campaign that will allow us to move forward with Phase II. Fr. Jude Egbuna, along with our Finance Council and Building and Grounds Committee, recently received and reviewed six bids for the Phase II bathroom project. Greenwood Project Management’s bid was selected as our contractor and came in below budget. The bids along with our selection were sent to the Diocese for approval. We are hoping to start the project in March 2020. Even though we are currently running a deficit in our operating budget, the donations given to the capital campaign are segregated into a separate account to be used for the purpose for which they were given, namely our capital campaign projects. The funds donated for these specific projects have already been collected. The parish has an obligation to use the funds as they were intended and given. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact our Parish Office. Thank you.

Capital Campaign Update-THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Your generous support and prayers over the past three years

makes the continuing renovation of our parish campus possible. Phase I-Completed-Redesign of the church interior, restoration of the carport pillars. Phase II-Completed-Placement of an electronic parish sign. In Process-Renovation of seven existing bathrooms and the addition of three ADA compliant family friendly single room bathrooms. Phase III-Under Discussion-Upgrade the north entrance narthex doors, update the electronic process system for secure door locking, and reinforcement of the bell tower.

Any campaign monies remaining after completion of the above projects will be placed in the Renewing God’s House fund. This fund was depleted with the purchase of the new boiler in July 2019. Payments toward remaining balances are appreciated. Direct deposit payments will end automatically when your pledge goal is met. If you use online giving for your Capital Campaign donations, review your WeShare account to be sure it is set up to end once your pledge is complete. God Bless and many thanks for all you do for our parish!
