Dear Friends, Welcome to our 5777 Calendar. What is a Shul? What does my Shul mean to me? I believe that at its core, our Shul is a makom teffilah. It is a place for us to daven and connect to Hashem. It is our spiritual home where we can explore, challenge and connect ourselves on a spiritual level. In addi on, our Shul is also a place where we connect to each other as friends and members of a community. This is a very exci ng me for our Shul. We welcomed 16 new member families this year including 8 families that have moved to our community and joined our Shul over this past summer. I have said in the past that our Shul membership is an extended family, and my hope is that our children feel that our Shul is their second home. This calendar is filled with opportuni es and programs for individuals and families of all ages. Our programming for this year reflects our Shul mission statement with its goal to foster our spiritual growth and connec on with Hashem. Our programming this year spans the most important areas of Orthodox life: Torah (learning), Avodah (Davening), and Gemilut Chasadim (acts of chesed). I look forward to gree ng you at many of these programs as we journey and grow together through this promising year. Wishing you and your family a K va Vacha ma Tova! Secular curriculum:
Children learn through experimen ng, observing, exploring and ques oning. Our program provides a curriculum for all areas of children’s growth: physical, emo onal, social, linguis c and cogni ve. The goal of our curriculum is to provide children with the skills that will help them to learn and to love learning.
Our daily program includes basic educa onal training in reading and math readiness, language arts, science, indoor and outdoor supervised ac vi es geared to the development of gross and fine motor skills, story me, arts and cra s, music and song.
Our age‐appropriate themed units are focused on founda onal concepts such as shapes and colors, seasons, transporta on, the five senses, Bu erflies and Metamorphis, dinosaurs and hiberna on.
Special events include a visit from the local fire department in connec on with our unit on fire safety, a trip to St. Barnabas Medical Center as part of our science unit on the body, and weekly dance and sports day.
The Nursery School also offers a er school enrichment programs provided by Travelin’ Tumblers and Musically Yours.
Judaic curriculum: Over the three years in our program, your child will become familiar with many Jewish themes such as the significance of Shabbat, Chagim, Torah, Mitzvot and the land and people of Israel. Through hands‐on ac vi es, arts & cra s, stories, song and imagina ve play we ins ll a constant sense of pride and love for our Jewish heritage.
Our daily program includes morning Tefilah, Brachot before ea ng, and Ne lat Yadayim and Birkat Hamazon at lunch me. Each week, the children learn about the weekly Parsha, and par cipate in a special Shabbat party. Every holiday is presented in its own dis nct way. On Rosh Chodesh there is a school‐wide gathering where the children join in song in our sanctuary. On Chanukah, we invite parents to join in our mul ‐sensory Chanukah workshop. For Pesach, the children par cipate in a Model Seder with our Rabbi, as well as a Matza Bakery right in our own school. Our celebra ons for Purim, Yom Ha’Atzmaut, Lag B’Omer, and Yom Yerushalayim are s mula ng and fun for each and every student. We are very proud of our Chalav U’Dvash Conversa onal curriculum which gives our children early exposure to the Hebrew language. Through repe on, song, conversa on and play, our students develop a familiarity with and love for the Hebrew language which will serve as a founda on for future years of Hebrew study.

The Sisterhood of Congrega on AABJ&D has played a vital and ac ve role in the synagogue since its incep on over 50 years ago. Through its many endeavors, it has greatly contributed to the growth of our Shul and the West Orange community. Sisterhood’s primary goal, besides offering a venue for women of all ages to socialize and show solidarity for one another, has been to help the Shul financially by dona ng funds from its projects to beau fy the Synagogue and enhance its opera ons.
Sisterhood’s many commi ees offer a variety of services to our Shul community. We provide a warm welcome to our new members, arrange visits to those who are home bound or hospitalized, and assist with meals during illness or during happy occasions such as childbirth.
Store Plan
The Store Plan is designed to help raise money for Sisterhood. Every me you shop at any of the par cipa ng stores, Sisterhood gets 5% of your sales. All you have to do is save your receipts and submit them to the Shul office. We will submit the receipts to these stores, and the stores will donate money to our Sisterhood. The following stores par cipate: WOXX Cleaning Clinic Emerald Cleaners Party Wine Jay’s Shoe Box
Meet the Board!

One of Sisterhood’s major goals is to fundraise for the Shul. As such, we make a large annual pledge to the Shul which we realize by selling scrip. What is SCRIP you may ask? Scrip gi cer ficates are redeemable at several merchants, such as ShopRite, Jerusalem Pizza, WO Bake Shop, Reuben’s Gla Spot and Seasons. For every $ you spend, Sisterhood gets 5%. This is a win‐win for all. Help us reach our goal of $1 million in sales. This is really doable. So, if all the Shul families would purchase $100/week in ShopRite Scrip, we can easily make it! Scrip is available in the Shul office or for home delivery. For more informa on or to sign up for home delivery, please contact our scrip coordinator at [email protected].
