Don’t leave the exam room early

I had the pleasure last week to be involved in the presentation to our students who participated in the Rural Fire Brigade cadetship that was held on campus during Term 3. Besides RFB Superintendent Steve Marsh and the volunteers who worked with the students, local MP Chris Holstein made himself available to support the partnership that has developed between the RFB and this Campus. Congratulations to all the students who completed the cadetship and to staff members John Cobham and Val Frances for their organisation and participation.

I wish to remind all Year 10 students and parents that although there will be no formal external School Certificate exam this year, grade assessments will continue through November and the final day for Year 10 will be 18 December. The last few weeks of Term are a great opportunity for Year 10 students to undertake work experience that can be organised by the Careers Adviser, Mr Harwood.

A reminder that as of the beginning of Term 4 the Campus has changed our uniform supplier. Uniforms can no longer be purchased on the Campus site but from the We’re Sportswear shopfront at 13-15 Mutu Street, Woy Woy. A letter with this information went home with every student and can also be found on our web site.

Finally I would like to pass on my personal thanks to Assistant Canteen Supervisor Nichole Barnes who resigned just before the Term 3 holidays to take up a new career opportunity. Nichole has given tremendous service to this Campus and was highly regarded by staff and students. We wish her the very best in her new career. Position Available:

Canteen Assistant 15 Hours per week The Canteen Assistant will work under the direction of The Canteen Supervisor and support the operation of the Canteen in accordance with the school’s Canteen Policy and related Work Health & Safety Regulations. Initially this part-time position is for between 15 and 20 hours per week including one full day per week (from 6:30 am to 2:00 p.m.) as relieving Canteen Supervisor. The position is made on the basis of “Casual Employment”. Wages will be according to the Current “Fast Food Industry Award 2010”. Applicants need to address the following, in writing, via 2 pages only. *Name, contact details and brief personal resume. *Previous and current employment background with names and contact details of three current referees. *Essential Criteria. *Desirable Criteria.

Essential Criteria *Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and uphold confidentiality. *Demonstrated ability to work independently. *Statement of Attainment for the TAFE NSW School Canteen Strategy Course or similar (or a willingness to work towards). *Excellent communication skills. *Excellent interpersonal skills. *Prepared to be assessed via “Police Security Check”, “Working with Children Clearance“ and ”Work Health & Safety”.

Desirable Criteria *Demonstrated understanding of the Healthy School Canteen Strategy. *Demonstrated experience in school canteen management. *Demonstrated financial experience. *Ability to use basic computer software such as Word, Excel, Email, and MYOB.

YEAR 12 LEARNING CONFERENCE

Mr Wade and I would like to welcome our Year 11’s into your first Term of Year 12. A huge thanks goes to Paul Broadbent for organising the Year 12 Learning Conference. These first two days of the Term were filled with important, interesting speakers and workshops. The program was jam packed with guest speakers including; Ian West from the Board of Studies, Karen Jones, the School Education Director, Deb Rhoades and our own valuable teachers; Liesl Tesch (our very own Paralympian Gold medallist), Linda Langmaid, Paul Broadbent, Val Frances and Kirrily Harvey. A sample of the two days activities are outlined below in the program:

We hope that our new Year 12’s got as much out of the two days as they could. It was a valuable experience and a positive way to start off the HSC year on the right foot. ***Just a reminder: By now all Year 12 should have received a note regarding their Year 12 Jackets. Remember to get your payment of $80 into the front office ASAP. Payments should be finalised before the end of Term 4. See Ms Price for notes or further details including sizing and nick-names. ONE ON ONE TURNS 19!

One-on-One, after 19 years, is still helping students to achieve success in their studies. Thanks to our dedicated volunteers, Joan Brennan, Nan Wilmott, Elise Appel and Jim Minto, many students have gained new confidence in their studies.

These wonderful volunteers arrive every Tuesday with enthusiasm and keen wit to help and encourage our students.

Sadly this year, we lost one of our volunteers with the sudden death of Barbara Willingham who was once the Librarian at the then known Woy Woy High School and then came back, after retirement, as a volunteer on One-on-One Program. She is greatly missed.

One-on-One involves the volunteers working individually with students in English, Mathematics and research skills and the results show what a difference individual help can make.

The volunteers help to make school a more rewarding place for many students.

Thanks must also go to Mrs Crain and the Canteen ladies for providing such delicious morning teas each week. Thank you very much.

Once again, Mrs Weir has been a great support to the program by always willingly helping in any area needed. Mr Laffan has also been invaluable in his assistance whenever computer expertise is needed. Both make my job much easier.

The students have worked well and turn up each week ready to improve their skills.

It has been a great pleasure for me to work with all these wonderful people and I thank them very much. Ava Bourke — Co-ordinator

CAREERS NEWS

Year 10 students who have applied for TVet Courses at the Hunter/Central Coast Institute should be receiving letters home now regarding acceptance or other. Your place will not be confirmed unless you tear the slip off and send it back.

There is now a list of students so far accepted into Meadowbank TAFE stuck to the Careers room door.

Information regarding becoming a Police Officer has arrived. Ask the Careers Adviser for information. The latest edition of Career News, a newsletter aimed at students containing lots of interesting information is available for perusal at the Careers Office.

www.aapathways.com.au contains a link to about 25 aptitude quizzes that reflect standards required of people attempting an Australian apprenticeship entry level qualification.

Celebrating community partnerships

YEAR 10 POLISH DAY

As a part of the Beacon Program and the Creating Our Future Program, 22 students from Year 10 attended the Polish day at Everglades Country Club Thursday 11 October 2012. The Polish program is a one-day workshop that helps young people prepare for their careers through personal presentation and communication training, giving students the skills to conduct

themselves appropriately when entering the world of work and throughout their employment.

I would like to thank all the students for their attendance and their behaviour on the day.

CONGRATULATIONS JISH

During the school holi-days, Jish Malhotra rep-resented NSW in Athlet-ics at the Trans Tasman Special Olympics which was held in Cairns.

Jish won 2 Gold medals, one for 100 metres run-ning and the other in the 4kg shotput. Well done Jish we are very proud of you.

RURAL FIRE SERVICE GRADUATION

The 2012, Term 3, Rural Fire Service Cadetship concluded earlier this term with a Presentation Ceremony attended by a number of special guests, parents and cadets. Steve Marsh (RFS Gosford Superintendent), Chris Holstein MP (Member for Gosford) and David Allomes (BWSC Principal) were all speakers at the ceremony with each acknowledging the fantastic efforts of all those involved in the organisation and running of the Cadetship. Special thanks needs to go to Talone Higgins (RFS Community Safety Officer) and the 20 Volunteer RFS members with their dedication to the smooth running of the Cadetship.
