SUMMER READING “A book is the only place in which you can examine a fragile thought without breaking it, or explore an explosive idea without fear it will go off in your face. It is one of the few havens remaining where a man's mind can get both provocation and privacy.“ ~Edward P. Morgan Summer Reading is essential as students enjoy their learning experiences during the summer months. The books selected have a direct relationship to the curriculum being taught in coming year, and are thought-provoking pieces of literature that should provide opportunities for student re-flection. These books will challenge student assumptions and inspire new thinking. Summer Reading assignments are required, as these books will be the foundations of lessons at the beginning of the next school year. Students will be provided with additional infor-mation by in their classes. Dear parents, In the past, Simon Miller from the Cayman Islands National Drug Council has come to CIS to conduct discussions and information seminars for students and parents. He was very well received in the past, and he was able to connect to students and stimulate excellent dialogue with our kids. Mr. Miller will be returning to CIS next week on Tuesday, June 11, and he will be facilitating multiple seminars with students in grades 6-12. Mr. Miller will share statistics and information from the Cayman Islands student drug survey and research regarding illegal drugs and drug use. We know that almost all of the issues related to children and illegal drugs happens with their peers in social settings, and Mr. Miller’s goal is to prevent illegal drug use among teens in the Cayman Islands.

There is a parent information seminar and discussion being held the same evening (June 11, 6:00 PM in the MPR) as these student sessions. Please take time to attend the seminar and talk to your child about drugs.

Battle of the Books Under the Sea Our Battle of the Books team has been

working very hard this year to prepare for

our book trivia battle on June 8th against

St. Ignatius. Our team, the Brainy Barna-

cles, is comprised of Karinya L., Alexia L.,

    Marianne R., Nicky G., Madison I., Megan

E., and Leanna S. These students have

read and studied a handful of books and will be fun to watch in

competition! Please join us on June 8th 9-11:30 in the library to

    cheer on these students.

    3RD ANNUAL IB NIGHT

For the 3rd straight year the seniors of CIS

hosted an IB Night in the ARC for students,

    parents and community members alike.

The students worked collaboratively to cre-

ate and plan an exciting evening filled with information

and anecdote. Students created display walls for each

course and core area of the IB Program here at CIS.

They shared their work and individual experiences with

under classmen who are looking forward to entertaining

this challenging and rewarding academic program. It

was an enjoyable night and a job well done by our Sen-

iors. If you have any questions regarding the IB Diplo-

ma Program at CIS please feel free to contact our IB co-

ordinator, Ms. Sarah at [email protected]

or Dr. Jeremy at [email protected].

    Keep up the hard work!

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR SUMMER

Summer vacation is a great time for students to rest, recharge, play, plan, make

goals, build their resume, and begin the college search and college application

process. Here are some ideas for how students can make the most of this summer:

    1) Get a summer job: If they are thinking about working this summer, they should be ap-

plying for jobs now! As we all know, the best way for them to get a job is to have a solid

resume, dress for the part, pound the pavement, and use any contacts they have to open doors

of opportunity. I encourage students to look for a job that really interests them. Frequent employ-

ers of high school students include park districts, golf courses, umpire/referee associations, tennis/

swim clubs, summer camp programs, restaurants, and other seasonal establishments. If you cannot find

a paying position, consider an internship or volunteering at a nonprofit.

    2) Get involved with community service: You often receive as much from volunteering as you give. This is a

great way to become active in a cause that interests you. These web sites can get you started: www.idealist.org ,

www.impactonline.org, www.servenet.org. You can also find a list of local opportunities on this website: http://

    www.caymannewresident.com/voluntary-organisations

    3) Take a summer class. If you are in high school and are interested in earning elective credits, taking an additional

math course, or completing tech or PE credits over the summer, talk to me about possibly taking a class through Florida

Virtual School (www.flvs.net). This could be a great opportunity to get ahead, catch up, or free up your schedule down

the line for IB prep class time. You could also use this time to take a yoga class, work on your foreign language skills,

take a cooking class, learn more about photography, take an art class in the community, etc. Check out this website for

camps and classes offered in Cayman this summer: http://www.caymannewresident.com/kids-summer-camps

    4) Turn travel into opportunity. Your summer vacation could be an excellent topic for your college essays. Do not just

write about what you did, but explain why it was meaningful or what you learned from it. Attention 11th graders: The

Common Application essay questions have been announced for next year’s application! You can spend the entire sum-

mer revising and perfecting your essay: https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/Docs/DownloadForms/2013/

    EssayAnnouncementFinal.pdf

    5) Work on your world language skills. Summer vacation offers the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in a lan-

guage course or enroll in an immersion program. One opportunity is with Mr. Dave’s eSPEAK program in Malaga,

    Spain www.espeak.eu.

    5) Get started on your reading list for your English class next year. If you are interested in reading ahead, contact Ms.

Katie K to discuss which books will be covered in your English class next year. If you are looking for some good book

recommendations, pop into the library and chat with Ms. Ashley.

No matter what you have planned for summer, I hope that you enjoy a safe and happy July and August.

    Keep care, Ms. Katie

    CIS on the Move

Congratulations to the CIS Interscholastic Roller Hockey Teams

CIS had 3 teams in the Interscholastic Roller Hockey Tournament that took place last weekend. Members of each of the CIS teams were:

The CIS 13 U’s won their division with a little help from members from the 10 U’s team and under the coaching of Jagger H. also a CIS student and Gordon M. The CIS 8U’s also won their division in an exciting last game that went into overtime shoot action with Gavin S. getting the go ahead goal. The combined schools won the 10U’s division but the games were ex-citing and demon-strated some great hockey. The 6U’s played hard and had great fun. Congratulations to all the players.

    Thanks to the

    generosity of

    Alexia B. on her

    8th birthday the

    8th birthday,

    Alexia asked her

    friends and fami-

ly to provide donations to the Humane So-

ciety rather than gifts. With their help,

Alexia gave approximately $200 worth of

animal food to the Humane Society. Nice
