T his year 10 Iowa State University Scholarship recipients were honored February 15 during the 2017 Iowa Seed Association Scholarship Awards
Ceremony held in conjunction with the Agribusiness Showcase & Conference (ASC) in Des Moines. Seven students were awarded Iowa Seed Association Scholarships (ISA) of $1000 each. One of the students, Catherine Leafstedt, was also selected as the Manjit Misra Outstanding Senior Scholar. She was awarded $500 in addition to the $1000 ISA scholarship. Also earning scholarship awards were Sarah Striegel who received a $1000 scholarship sponsored by the American Seed Trade Association (ASTA) and Leah Ellensohn received the $1000 Bill Latham Scholarship at the event. For the first time this year, the ISU Seed Science Center awarded the Lisa Shepherd Jenkins Memorial Scholarship during the
ceremony. Agronomy Senior Anthony Moellers received the award that is open to students engaged in seed science and technology at Iowa State. The $1,000 scholarship honors Shepherd Jenkins who was an internationally respected expert in seed pathology. Shepherd Jenkins, who passed away on July 1, 2015, was Director of the Administrative Unit of the National Seed Health System and Seed Health Testing Coordinator for the Seed Science Center. The Scholarship Committee and CALS greatly appreciate the generosity, in the form of the scholarship funds, and the great measure of support given to ISU and the College, by the Iowa Seed Association and the American Seed Trade Association. We also appreciate the leadership of Dr. Manjit Misra, Seed Science Center Director and Seed Science Endowed Chair. View all names of students here.

D uring the 2017 Seed Forum on Wednesday, February
15, 2017 the Iowa Seed Association (ISA) board of
directors recognized Rick Buresh as the 2017 ISA
Honorary Member. ISA annually partners with the
Agribusiness Showcase & Conference (ASC) in Des Moines. ISA
hosts seed forum and annual meeting during the ASC to provide
attending members a wider range of learning and networking
opportunities.
The honorary member is annually awarded to a fellow seed
professional who has made a significant contribution to the seed
industry during their career, and is chosen by the current ISA
president. “I believe Rick is very deserving of this recognition with
the impacts he has made over the years with so many people in
the seed business.” Tom Tusha, Mycogen Seeds, 2016 ISA
President
Rick has been in the seed business for 32 years. He has been
employed by Dekalb, Monsanto, and currently with Wyffels
Hybrids. He has had the opportunity to see agriculture all across
this country. He has experienced agriculture from Florida to
upstate New York, to Washington State and Arizona.

Region Manager at Wyffels Hybrids, Inc.
His best times were in the state of Iowa. Over half of his career
was spent managing people in the state. Over his career he has
hired over 100 employees in different roles. This was most
rewarding for Rick. He loved to see people grow in their jobs and
become part of a productive team.

T his American Seed Trade Association (ASTA) site was developed
as a public source of information on plant breeding innovation.
Through advancements in agriculture and the development of
new crop varieties, humans have historically strived to meet the
needs of a growing population and to develop a safe, reliable and
sustainable food supply.
How will we continue to meet this challenge, while dealing with a
changing climate and threats of new pests and diseases? Just like in
other industries, continued innovation is paramount to the future of
agriculture, and our quality of life. Plant breeders will need access to
every tool available to meet these challenges in a safe, affordable and
responsible manner. The future is here and now; it starts with the seed.
In February 2017, ASTA officially launched their new public-facing PBI
microsite: www.seedinginnovation.org.
The PBI Communications Toolkit is now available on the members-only
site (under issue areas – communications). In the toolkit you’ll find a
template industry presentation, a discussion guide, and message map.
ASTA Launches Online PBI Communications Toolkit
T his workshop is for persons interested in hands-on
experience with most available testing methods for corn and
soybeans. Seed analysts, genetic technologists, lab
managers, seed brokers, journalists, and others will benefit
from taking this workshop.
Participants will evaluate seedlings from testing methods on two
seed lots of corn and two soybean seed lots and will see how their
results compare to the class average, high and low results.
Traditional seed testing methods include warm germination (sand,
rolled paper towels, VersaPak), tray cold, towel cold, saturated cold,
accelerated aging (AA), tetrazolium (TZ), fast green on corn, bleach
test on soybeans, and electrical conductivity.
Lecture topics include seed and seedling morphology, evaluation
rules (AOSA, ISTA, Canada), sampling, seed vigor, and vigor testing
methods, identification of common fungi, TZ, seed count, moisture,
seed conditioning, and testing for biotech traits. This workshop will
include segments on seed health testing and biotech trait testing
(trait purity, AP/LLP testing). Handson segments will include
herbicide bioassay, ELISA and lateral flow strips.
