A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR When I was in the fifth grade, I read a book entitled Blood of the Brave. It was a corny novel for kids about Franciscan missionaries trying to convert the Aztecs in Mexico during the time of the Spanish conquistadores. Now, you might think that I was drawn to the book out of my budding zeal for the apostolic mission, but frankly, I found the Franciscans to be a bore. I was far more interested in the Aztec priests. They wore huge, plummed headdresses. They painted their bodies blue and danced and chanted and cut out the hearts of sacrificial victims and possessed eerie powers. I was impressed by them because they had a very real, very ob-vious connection to the spiritual world, and they most definitely meant business. The book in-

spired in me an interest in the spiritual experiences of indigenous cultures and religions. So in later years, I studied primal human spirituality. I discovered that all the things we do in the practice of our christian faith have roots in primal human spiri-tuality. Everything from the rosary to the sacraments works because of the way God made us spiritually, and that spiritual foundation is common to all people and all religious traditions. Of course, this is a huge topic to cover, and I can only give it mention here, but I mention it because of today's celebration of the sacrament of Confirmation at the 11:30 Mass. Today, Bishop John Manz administers the sacrament of Confirmation to our eighth grade students. As Bishop Manz chrismates each of the confirmandi, he says, "Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit." It makes me think of my study of primal human spirituality. To heal people, shamans will journey to the realm of the spirit to recover a person's lost soul-parts or lost spiritual guides. Upon finding the lost spiritual essences, the shaman returns and blows them back into the person and then shakes a rattle around the person to seal in the spirit against further loss. In the Rite of Confirmation, the bishop calls down the Holy Spirit on the confirmandi and then seals it in with the Sacred Chrism. Though it would be cool to see Bishop Manz shaking a big, noisy, spooky rattle around each 8th grader, the principle is the same. The Holy Spirit is sealed in and fills any space that is empty in the confirmandi. But the really fascinating thing about Confirmation, from the perspective of primal human spirituality, is that the spirit that is being sealed into the confirmandi is not simply part of their own lost spiritual essence or the energy of a helper or guide in the spiritual realm. It is God. I like that. It makes me think of those chanting, blue, knife-wielding Aztec priests who meant serious business. How much more seri-ous could we be? This is no ordinary spirit. This is the Holy Spirit. This is God. When you were confirmed, God was sealed inside of you. You are filled with the Holy Spirit, and now he lives and moves and breathes in you. Are you aware of that? Shamans say that a power animal or spiritual guide can be lost if we do not spend time with it and learn from it. God promises us that he will never abandon us, but we can easily abandon God. Sometimes that abandonment is the subtle loss of forgetting that the di-vine dwells in us. Then we live differently and we lose touch with the divine. It is then that we might be in need of a soul retrieval. This week we begin Lent. On Ash Wednesday, come to church to be smudged with ashes. It is not quite as dramatic as being painted blue, but it carries a similar message. It shows that you mean business -- the business of living your life in such a way that the presence of the Holy Spirit in you is obvious. Lent has al-ways been the Church's time to prepare for sacramental initiation -- Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. So this Lent, remember your Confirmation. Remember that the bishop blew the Holy Spirit into you to fill you with God. Then he sealed the Holy Spirit in you with the Sacred Chrism. The Holy Spirit will not leave you, but you can forget about the Holy Spirit. So remember! Remember that God lives and moves and breathes in you. Remember that you are filled with no ordinary spirit but with the Holy Spirit, and make Lent a time to demon-strate that to the world. And if you need any help, feel free to stop by church. Bill Zavaski and his topic will be: 12 CHARACTERISTICS OF DISCIPLESHIP Today Jesus has a lot of admirers but not so many followers. One of the real challenges for "Renew My Church" in the archdiocese is to encour-age all parishioners to take the challenge of follow-ing Jesus seriously. This presentation will cover 12 unique and important ideas we should try to emulate to follow Jesus today as contemporary Catholics. As a disciple and follower of Jesus we also need to pay special attention to the gospel mandate presented by Matthew in his gospel especially the 5th and 6th chapters. LENTEN REGULATIONS (from March 1, 2017, Ash Wednesday, to the

Paschal Triduum) Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fast-ing is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one‘s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday.

“Lent is ordered to preparing for the celebration of Easter, since the Lenten liturgy prepares for celebration of the Paschal Mystery both catechumens, by the vari-ous stages of Christian Initiation, and the faithful, who recall their own Baptism and do penance.” (Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year, #27) By the threefold discipline of fasting, alms-giving and prayer the church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thurs-day. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake the serious practice of these three tradi-tions. Failure to observe penitential days totally or a substantial number of such days must be consid-ered serious. “(On) weekdays of Lent, we strongly recom-mend participation in daily Mass and self-imposed observances of fasting. In light of grave human needs which weigh on the Christian conscience in all seasons, we urge particularly during Lent, gen-erosity to local, national and world programs of sharing of all things needed to translate our duty to penance into a means of implementing the right of the poor to their part of our abundance.”

STEWARDSHIP FOR LENT HELPING ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

The Gospel reading for Ash Wednesday de-scribes the traditional three-part Lenten exercise: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Jesus instructs his followers to turn to God, to turn from self-interest and to deepen their relationship with the Lord in se-cret. He tells them in effect that a humble and quiet pattern of prayer, self-denial and reaching out to oth-ers is transforming and leads to a favorable out-come. What is our plan to turn ever closer to God in this Lenten season? Are we prepared to treat this season as a time to deepen our own relationship with the One who redeemed us? It has been a tradition at Divine Infant Jesus Par-ish to donate food, paper and cleaning products, and personal products to our St. Vincent de Paul society to distribute to members of our community in need. Below are specified items that may be donated dur-ing each week of Lent. These are merely sugges-tions and any food product, etc., is welcome at any time. Monetary donations are always appreciated as they are used to purchase gift cards and for emergencies. Our faith is reflected most strongly in our actions to help the most vulnerable, especially those who hunger. May God continue to bless your generous hearts. THREE-PARISH LENTEN MISSION This Lent the parishes of St. Barbara, Divine Infant and St. Louise de Marillac are joining to host a Three-Parish Lenten mission. Different speakers will give mission talks at each of the three churches. The schedule is as follows: • Tuesday, March 14, at 7 p.m. at St. Barbara Church, 4008 Prairie Ave., Brookfield. Fr. Mike Ahlstrom will talk on the “Spiritual Tools of Jesus: Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving’’ – how 21st century Catholics can use the traditional Lenten disciples in a positive way. Fr. He then moved to Wauconda to pastor Transfiguration parish and finally came back to St. James in 1995 as pastor. He has been the dean of Lake County and the northwest suburbs and is currently a member of the priests’ retirement and mutual aid board and is working with new and recently ordained priests. He has been doing parish missions focusing on discipleship for the last 35 years. • Tuesday, April 4, at 7 p.m. at St. Louise de Marillac Church, 1144 Harrison Ave., LaGrange Park. Dea-con Allen Tatara will speak on “How to Listen for God’s Voice in an EarBud Wearing World” – we all love lis-tening to music. In fact, 80% of us agree that music is an important part of our lives for it defines who we are and helps us tune out the rest of the world. And there is the problem: we are using our earbuds to tune out the rest of the world. This talk will help you understand why you may not be able to hear God’s voice and pro-vide you with steps you can follow to hear God speaking to you. Deacon Allen is a preacher, speaker, story-teller, musician and evangelizer. He blends storytelling, humor, audience participation, music, and deep-seeded spirituality. Deacon Allen serves at St. Hubert Parish in Hoffman Estates. He has been involved with teens and young adults for more than 25 years, and works alongside his wife, Stephanie, as Youth Ministry Coordinators at the parish. Please make an effort to attend all three talks. Parishioners are encouraged to invite their family, friends and neighbors.

DON'T BE ANXIOUS People have, it seems, a natural penchant for misplaced emphasis on unimportant things. They can easily get caught up with what they're having for d i n n e r o r w h a t t h e y w i l l w e a r . Often it is a tragedy that helps people to refocus on what is really important. What I shall wear is an ir-relevant question when I am facing surgery or che-motherapy. What's for dinner is immaterial to those living through grief or unemployment. In today's Gospel, Jesus tells us not to worry. He doesn't say, "Don't eat. Don't cook. Don't buy clothes." He says, "Don't worry." Jesus asks us not to relinquish our responsibilities but to let go of our anxiety. A CUP OF TEA WITH CHRIST (A Lenten Journey)

What cross are we carrying? Cancer. Diabetes. Depression. Lupus. Cardiovas-cular Disease. Abuse. Lymes Disease. Do we allow this cross to weigh us down? Do we embrace our cross? The Season of Lent is rapidly approaching. As I thought about the crosses that we all carry and struggle with in our lives a thought came to mind. Perhaps during the Season of Lent, we can renew our relationship with God. One way of renewing this relationship is spending more time with God. Listening in silence as God speaks to us. What one simple way can we spend quality time with God? Perhaps we can try sitting with God each day with a cup of tea. Consuming one cup of tea takes at least 15 minutes… that does not count the time it takes to pre-pare your tea. As you are preparing your tea (hopefully in the traditional way of using a tea kettle and steeping the tea for at least 2 minutes) you can prepare yourself for time spent with God. Think of the cross you are car-rying. Think of what you would like to say to God. As you sit with your cup of tea, embrace the warmth of the cup you are holding. Allow comfort and serenity to engulf you with each sip that you take. Allow fear, an-ger, sadness, self-pity, loneliness to vanish – even if it is just for those 15 minutes spent in silence with God. Each day during Lent as we sit with God and our cup of tea recognize the cross you are carrying and then recog-nize that you have a choice on how you can carry your cross. Recognize the many crosses that are being car-ried by so many people and then listen in silence to the wonders of nature. Watch in silence as you observe someone else perform a selfless act of kindness. Listen in silence as you become more and more aware of so many wonderful people on this Earth that make a choice to do God’s work as they are carrying their own cross. I do not believe that Lent is meant to be a long, ardu-ous journey. I look forward to making time each day with God and my cup of tea so that I can sit in silence and just listen. On a nursing note – Green tea has wonderful antioxi-dants which can help lower blood pressure and choles-terol levels. Oolong Tea is noted for prevention of tooth decay and tartar buildup. Rooibos Tea is known for its anti-inflammatory and cardiovascular benefits. The list of teas and their benefits goes on. And, for those of you that are giving up soft drinks for Lent, you can now choose a healthier alternative that you can drink hot or cold. Enjoy your cup of tea with Christ! Pre-Kindergartener P.J. Paljetak brought a very special show and tell to Room 1 - his new baby sister, Amelia. Amelia was born on December 23rd, just in time for Christ-mas. Somehow, Amelia managed to sleep through all the ooh's and ah's.

Grade 1 has just begun a chapter on measure-ment. What better way to explore measurement than by hands on experience? The students are shown with their “Math Briefcases” that they proudly display. They will use items in the briefcase for measuring things. There are also other items in the briefcase for other math units. Each student also has coins to practice counting money. There are also tens and ones sticks when working on place value.

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION: (Confession) Saturday: In the Reconciliation Room 4:00 to 4:45 pm or by

appointment. BAPTISMS: Baptisms are celebrated on the 2nd & 3rd Sundays of the

month at 12:45 pm. By Archdiocesan regulation and parish policy, parents are required to attend a Baptismal Preparation session before the Baptism of their child. These sessions will usually be held on the first Sunday afternoon of the month. Call the secretary at the rectory (865-8071) to register for the session and schedule the Baptism.

D.I.V.M. SERVICES: Communion to the sick, food shopping, necessary

transportation, emergency meals, transportation to Mass. Resource information also available. If you need help from any of these services, please let us know as much in advance as possible so the chairpersons can make arrangements and the volunteers arrange their schedules. If you are able to volunteer to help provide these services to our parishioners, we can always use more help. Please call the rectory at 865-8071.

WEDDINGS: Couples should contact the rectory and speak to a priest

shortly after the engagement, but no less than four months before the desired wedding day.

No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your wedding until you have spoken to a priest. In this way, you will not be disappointed if the church has been previously reserved for another ceremony.
