Second Homily Dear Parish Family of St. Thomas, The following story crossed my desk! Happy Reading as we just celebrated the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ and as we continue in this Easter Season.

Man and a Fork

Your Pastor,

Rev. Thomas R. Rzepiela P.S. See you at our “Renew My Church” Town Hall meeting this Monday night.

There was a young man who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and had been given three months to live. So as he was getting his things 'in order,' he contacted his Priest and had him come to his house to discuss certain aspects of his final wishes.

He told him which songs he wanted sung at the service, what scriptures he would like read, and what outfit he wanted to be buried in.

Everything was in order and the Priest was about to leave when the young man suddenly remembered something very important to him.

'There's one more thing,' he said excitedly.

'What's that?' the Priest replied.

'This is very important,' the young man continued. 'I want to be buried with a fork in my right hand.'

The Priest stood looking at the young man, not knowing quite what to say.

'That surprises you, doesn't it?' the young man asked.

'Well, to be honest, I'm puzzled by the request,' said the Priest.

The young man explained. 'My grandmother once told me this story, and from that time on I have always tried to pass along its message to those I love and those who are in need of encouragement.

'In all my years of attending socials and dinners, I always remember that when the dishes of the main course were being cleared, some-one would inevitably lean over and say, ‘Keep your fork.’ '

'It was my favorite part because I knew that something better was coming .... like velvety chocolate cake or deep-dish apple pie. Something wonderful, and with substance!'

'So, I just want people to see me there in that casket with a fork in my hand and I want them to wonder ‘What's with the fork?’ '

‘Then I want you to tell them: Keep your fork ... the best is yet to come.'

The Priest's eyes welled up with tears of joy as he hugged the young man good-bye. He knew this would be one of the last times he would see him before his death.

But he also knew that the young man had a better grasp of heaven than he did. He had a better grasp of what heaven would be like than many people twice his age, with twice as much experience and knowledge.

He KNEW that something better was coming.

At the funeral, people were walking by the casket and they saw the suit he was wearing and the fork placed in his right hand. Over and over, the Priest heard the question, 'What's with the fork?' And over and over he smiled.

During his homily, the Priest told the people of the conversation he had with the young man shortly before he died. He also told them about the fork and about what it symbolized to him.

He told the people how he could not stop thinking about the fork and that they probably would not be able to stop thinking about it either.

He was right. So the next time you reach down for your fork, let it remind you, ever so gently, that the best is yet to come.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REPORT From Mary Strybel – Director of Religious Education We celebrated First Communion with our sweet, adorable, second graders this weekend! I feel so honored and privileged to witness this most precious Sacrament. Every year I ask our Catechists to please have the children write a prayer, or share their thoughts and feelings about receiving Jesus for the first me in Holy Communion. Below are some of the responses, which I’ll en tle “out of the mouths of God’s babes.” I have also le them unedited….

• I am excited to receive the Eucharist because it is the body and blood of Jesus. It will help me to be a good friend. It will keep my soul helthy. ANNE

Welcome back, 8th graders, who had an awesome experience in Washington D.C. Students were kept busy while visi ng the Capitol, Smithsonian, Mt. Vernon, the Basilica, Arlington Cemetery and so much more. From our wake-up call at 6:15am, we were busy un l 9 p.m. when we were dropped back at our hotel. Our 8th graders were excellent representa ves of St. Thomas of Villanova Catholic School! Our 2nd Grade class wanted to personally thank everyone who supported their Cra Sale:

Renew My Church

INITIAL SCENARIO 1 • St. Cole e and Misión San Juan Diego would join

together at the St. Cole e site. This united parish would sell the current Misión San Juan Diego property to re-invest in the space at the St. Cole e campus.

• St. Theresa and St. Thomas of Villanova Parishes would remain in their current parish structures as canonically independent parishes with their own full- me resident pastors.

• St. Theresa School and St. Thomas of Villanova School would be able to con nue in their current structures and programming. However, through the Renew My Church process, the leadership of both communi es may certainly explore if there would be opportuni es to strengthen Catholic educa on through any structural or programma c changes.

• Tax Credit Scholarships are hoped to play a vital role in strengthening access to Catholic educa on and enrollment at St. Cole e School. The archdiocese has made a commitment to the school for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years to allow me for efforts to increase enrollment. This scenario aims for St. Cole e School to reach vital enrollment and financial stability to con nue opera ng for the long-term.

INITIAL SCENARIO 2 • All four parishes would remain as canonically

independent parishes at their current sites. • To strengthen ministry, St. Thomas of Villanova and

Misión San Juan Diego would explore establishing a deeper partnership to use shared ministry facili es at the St. Thomas of Villanova campus. Misión San Juan Diego would con nue to hold Mass at its current site.

• St. Theresa School and St. Thomas of Villanova School would be able to con nue in their current structures and programming. However, through the Renew My Church process, the leadership of both communi es may certainly explore if there would be opportuni es to strengthen Catholic educa on through any structural or programma c changes.

− These scenarios show poten al models of how our parishes and schools could be configured in the future. These ini al scenarios are conversa on starters only. NO DECISIONS HAVE BEEN MADE!

− The two ini al scenarios are intended to spark conversa on about how to most effec vely minister to the en re grouping and how to provide an underlying structure to support that ministry.

− Through the process, our grouping is encouraged to propose alterna ves that could as effec vely or more effec-vely support ministry in the grouping. Ini al discussions about addi onal forms of collabora on may also emerge.

− It is important to note that any structural changes would be proposed to take effect July 1, 2019. No parish nor school changes would occur for the 2018-19 parochial and school year.

Most people probably know the me-honored maxim--that only two things in life are certain: death, and taxes--but perhaps most people don’t know its origin. I didn’t, anyway, un l I looked it up just now. I’m way too lazy to do any scholarly research, of course, but it’s easy enough to tell you Wikipedia’s take on the ma er… “‘Death and taxes is a common reference to the famous quota on: ‘Our new Cons tu on is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and tax-es’ (Benjamin Franklin, in a le er to Jean-Bap ste Leroy, 1789). However, Franklin's le er is not the origin of the phrase, which appeared earlier in Daniel Defoe's The Poli cal History of the Devil: ‘Things as certain as death and taxes, can be more firmly believ'd.’ (The Poli cal History of the Devil, 1726), and in The Cob-bler of Preston by Christopher Bullock (1716): ‘Tis impossible to be sure of any thing but Death and Taxes.’” So there you go. If you haven’t been paying a en on, Tax Day is to-day. April 15th. But there is a li le twist again this year, given the vagaries of the calendar. With the 15th falling on a Sunday, Tax Day would typically move forward one day to tomorrow, Monday, April 16th. But Tax Day 2018 is actual-ly Tuesday, April 17th. Why, specifi-cally? Because, as CNN.com explains, “…Monday, April 16th is Emancipa-

But regardless of a 4/15, 4/16, or 4/17 deadline, the IRS s ll es mates that up to 25% of the US popula on doesn’t get around to filing their taxes un l two weeks before the deadline. ber. Hey! I’ve been busy! “But in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” With all due respect to Benjamin Franklin, Daniel Defoe, and Christopher Bullock…well…yes, and no.

Taxes for sure are certain. Even Jesus and the apostles knew about taxes. I mean, remember that whole census tax conversa on around the Roman coin bearing Caesar’s likeness? But as believers, we know that death isn’t really death. “Peace be with you,” Jesus tells his friends again this week when he shows up in their midst. They think they’re seeing a ghost, but Jesus puts them at ease: “Why are you troubled? And why do ques ons arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” Jesus proceeds to show the disciples his hands and his feet, and his friends are “incredulous for joy.” As we should all be, knowing what we know. April 15/16/17 may be Tax Day, and there may be no escaping it. But we are an Easter people, and we know that ul mately, Franklin, DeFoe, and Bullock--though certainly insigh ul, all--only got it half-right.

III NIEDZIELA WIELKANOCNA – Jestem [z Tobą]… ‘Uczniowie opowiadali, co ich spotkało w drodze, i jak poznali Jezusa przy łamaniu chleba…’ [Łk 24, 35]. ‘Kim jest ten trzeci, który zawsze idzie obok ciebie? Gdy liczę nas, jesteśmy tylko ty i ja. Lecz gdy spoglądam przed siebie w biel drogi, zawsze ktoś jeszcze idzie obok cie-bie…’ Tak o tajemniczym wędrowaniu do Emaus opowiadał w jednym ze swoich wier-szy T. S. Eliot. Ta wędrówka doprowadziła uczniów Jezusa do spotkania, a spotkanie za stołem – ku doświadczeniu wiary. Dzisiaj nie brakuje ludzi z sercami pełnymi wątpli-wości i sceptycyzmu, zagubionych, zmieszanych na duchu wskutek chaosu idei, słów, zawiedzionych nadziei i niespełnionych marzeń. ‘Ja jestem!’ – mówi do nich Chrystus. Tylko tyle i aż tyle…

Dlaczego Chrystus musiał umrzeć…

Czy można sobie wyobrazić kogoś bardziej miłosiernego, współczującego, osobę grzeczniejszą, bardziej wyrozumiałą, bardziej łagodną, bardziej kochającą człowieka, niż Jezus?

I co Go ostatecznie spotkało?

‘Ukrzyżuj go!!!’

Wzgardzono Jego miłosierdziem, zapomniano o Jego wrażliwości, odrzucono Jego grzeczność, na Jego łagodność odpowiedziano kpiną, na Jego Miłość… nienawiścią.

Dlaczego zginął tak barbarzyńską śmiercią?

Bo naraził się możnym, bogatym, zarozumiałym, pewnym siebie. Naraził się poli-tykom, bogaczom, uczonym, wykształconym, faryzeuszom, politycznie poprawnym elitom, zadufanym w sobie, mocnym tego świata.

Przecież nie został ukrzyżowany za to, że karmił głodnych i uzdrawiał chorych. Prze-cież nie został wydany na smierć krzyżową za to, że głosił miłość i przebaczenie, ale za to, że był niewygodny, za to, że głosił prawdę, za to, że był politycznie niepoprawny, za to, że nie przyjął i nie zaakceptował moralności możnych, bogatych, pewnych siebie, egoistycznych, zarozumiałych, politycznie poprawnych…

Jeśli Jego to spotkało, to czego ty oczekujesz…?
