Welcome Dr. Mildred Garcia by Belinda de la Libertad

Dr. Mildred Garcia, the first Latina to serve as President of California State University, Fullerton, was welcomed to Orange County at a reception in her honor on March 15 at the Heritage Museum of Orange County in Santa Ana, California. The welcoming committee included NHBWA members Teresa Mercado-Cota (Immediate Past President), Olga Niebla (Advisory Board), and Dr. Ana Jimenez-Hami. Also in attendance were California Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva, Assemblyman Tom Daly, and Rancho Santiago Community College District Trustee Claudia Alvarez. Approximately 200 educators, professionals, community members and students attended the reception.

Dr. Garcia was appointed as the seventh president of California State University, Fullerton--the largest campus in the CSU system--in June of 2012. She also currently serves on President Obama’s Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, on the boards of directors for the Association of American Colleges and Universities and the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education; on the advisory boards of Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education and Higher Education Abstracts; the board of trustees for the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning; the board of visitors for USAF’s Air University; and as founding board member of the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships. In 2010, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan appointed García to the U.S. Committee on Measures of Student Success.

In her remarks, Dr. García expressed her strong commitment to multicultural alliances and a belief that these coalitions strengthen institutions and communities as well as students' self-development and opportunities.

Jamie Angulo by Erika de la Teja

Jamie Angulo is one of our newest NHBWA members. She is a student at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) studying Business Administration and works for the Anaheim Ducks as a Power Player. She was born in Los Angeles and this marks her second year as a Power Player. Her ultimate goal is to work in Human Resources. She is a fan of all sports, and being a Power Player was the perfect way to be surrounded by something she is passionate about. Her favorite part about being a Power Player is being a part of all the games and fun events. “There is nothing like getting to work a game and being surrounded by the intense and energetic atmosphere the fans create,” Jamie says. When asked about what she is most looking forward to this season, Jaime answers, “Building new friendships with my new teammates and a solid season.” Her spare time is usually spent catching up on some sleep or hanging out with her friends and family. Jamie loves the fact that she is Hispanic, and is set on her goal of being the first generation college graduate in her family. She has volunteered with NHBWA in years past and would like to help other young females just like her.

Passionate About Math

Scholarship recipient Nanette Duarte is a Barstow resident and a graduate of Barstow Community College and California State University, San Bernardino with degrees in Mathematics. Miss Duarte, who easily holds a GPA of 4.0, is now pursuing a Master’s degree in Math Education at the California State University, San Bernardino. “I dream of inspiring students to reach their full potential. I am pursuing a Master’s in Math Education and I want to become a community college instructor. I have worked in and experienced the community college environment and know the need for highly effective and qualified math teachers. I have a long history of tutoring math and working in the public school system. My passion for math stems from a highly effective middle school math teacher and was further fostered by inspirational college professors. I want to bring this level of mastery and enthusiasm to the community college level and encourage my students to pursue higher levels of math,” Nanette says. “My parents taught me to be empathetic. I attribute this lesson to my compassion towards animals and passion for helping others. Empathy has allowed me to connect with others and foster meaningful relationships where I have the opportunity to inspire, teach, and make a true difference in one’s life.”
