Principal’s Message
It feels like it has snuck up on us a bit, but the last week of Term 1 has
arrived. I’d like to acknowledge how well all of our students have worked this
term and congratulate them on their effort and the progress they have made
with their learning. There has been quite a bit on throughout the term and
lots of opportunities both inside the classroom and outside for learning. I’d
like to also thank our dedicated staff for their efforts this term. The
opportunities that our students have wouldn’t be possible without them.
And thank you parents for the contributions you’ve made this term too. It
been delightful to have so many of you available to help in classrooms, in the
canteen and with special events like Harmony Day.
Last week, I was able to share that our school had raised over $4,000 for the
Voigt family. The final amount was $4,600. Along with Kinda Kapers we are
pleased to announce that the combined total amount raised was $10,000. A
cheque will be passed on to the family this week. Once more can I thank
everyone for their support – this is a terrific result and will be very much
appreciated by Amalie’s family.
The Easter holidays are a great opportunity for families to spend some
quality time together. I hope that whatever it is that your family gets up to,
that your Easter is filled with loads of fun and that you create some special
memories with your children. Please be safe and we look forward to doing it
all again - next term!
Happy Easter
David Holland

Staff News
You may remember back in Week 7 that we announced Mrs Naylor-Solman’s plans to retire at the end of Term
2. Before her retirement takes effect, she will be on long service leave for all of next term. There will be a
chance for the students and community to say goodbye to Mrs Naylor-Solman later in Term 2. In the meantime,
we welcome Mrs Alison Stallard, a teacher of 13 years’ experience who will be joining our staff to relieve as
Assistant Principal next term and to take on the responsibility of teaching 2/3NS.
Also, our fabulous preschool staff Ms Brook and Mrs Roberts will both be taking some leave in Term 2. Ms Brook
will be on leave for the first five weeks and will be relieved by the very versatile Ms Brianna Darcy. And Mrs
Roberts will be on leave for all of Term 2, we welcome Ms Rhiannon Ward to Cardiff South who will relieve in

ANZAC Day Dear Families, Anzac Day is a day of remembrance for all soldiers who died while fighting for their country. As part of our school Anzac service, families are invited to present a book to be kept in our school library in recognition of this solemn day. If you would like your child to present and donate a book, a small selection of appropriate books priced between $10 and $20 are available at the front office until Thursday afternoon. Your generosity and support is appreciated, Melanie Conrick Also, students are invited to bring in appropriate flowers or greenery this Friday to contribute to a class wreath which will be laid on the stage during our Anzac assembly. The school Anzac service will be held in the hall at 9am on Friday morning.
Senior Choir
Our senior choir members will be visiting the BUPA nursing home at Cardiff this Friday. They will be performing
several songs for the residents and hopefully brightening their day a little. Thank you Mrs Leggett and Ms
Murray for organising this and best wishes to all the students involved. No doubt you will represent Cardiff
South PS with pride.
Aboriginal Family Breakfast
A reminder for our Aboriginal students and families about breakfast tomorrow morning in the library at 7:30am.

Year 6 T-Shirts
All Year 6 students should have received today a note with further information offering them the opportunity to
purchase a special Year 6 T-shirt. Based on the feedback we received from parents last year, we have decided to
organise these shirts earlier in the school year to enable families to get maximum value from their purchase.
Please read the note carefully. A recommendation about what size shirt your child will need has been made,
however the final decision lies with you so please choose carefully. The cost will be included in the Term 2
invoice, but for now we would appreciate having the notes back as soon as possible so that we can place an
order.
Canberra Excursion
Please note: If your child is participating in the Canberra excursion and you are trying to stick to our suggested
payment plan; The next payment of $90 is due this week. Any families that have not yet indicated that they
may require some additional financial assistance need to do so now or risk missing out.
Uniform Update
We received last Wednesday a complete sample of both the new polo shirt and jacket. The P&C uniform
committee members have checked over the samples and have indicated that they are very happy with the
quality of the garments. A large order will be placed this week based on the feedback we received from families
last month and we are hopeful that the new stock will arrive and be ready for sale through the uniform shop at
the beginning of next term.
Year 5 Opportunity Class Applications
Parents seeking an opportunity class placement for Year 5 entry in 2015 are required to submit an application by
16th May 2014. Generally students are in Year 4 in 2014 when applying for Year 5 entry in 2015. Application
packages which contain more information will be available from the office after the 28th April next term.
Families with Internet access can also find out more information and apply online at:
www.schools.nsw.edu.au/ocplacement Please note: these opportunity classes are established externally in
other school settings.
Books to boost brains
Literacy skills often progress suddenly in leaps and bounds. The secret is to keep kids of all ages reading over the
weekends and school holidays. Even 20 minutes a night can make a huge difference to their reading,
comprehension and general knowledge. It’s also a great way to settle their minds down before sleep (for adults
too!). If your child hasn’t found a book that grabs their imagination, why not try them on a series book from the
Premier’s Reading Challenge list? Here are top suggestions for all ages, including young adult :

Kik, Vine, Instagram – are they safe?
It’s no contest – kids discover and understand new social media long before we adults do. If your child is
thinking about creating a new social media account – or complains that “everyone else is doing it”, you can get
the facts at a glance from School A to Z’s technology glossary. You’ll also find information about age restrictions
(yes they do have them!) and things to watch out for: http://bit.ly/188OerY
Entertainment Books
The Entertainment books are here! There a limited number of books, so get in fast. The books cost just $60 and
payment MUST BE IN CASH, as this is a P&C fundraiser.
Mother’s Day Stall
The Mother’s Day stall is on Wednesday 7th May. Please start thinking about what wonderful donations you
could supply, keep an eye out at the shops through the holidays. We will need helpers to do some wrapping and
sorting of gifts in the week before the stall. Your assistance on the day of the stall will be greatly appreciated,
any time you can offer between 8:30 and 11:30 will be fantastic.
