Joseph Martin May 21, 2017 CONGRATULATIONS MSGR. MARTIN 50 YEARS A PRIEST Msgr. Martin has been faithfully serving the New York Catholic Community for 50 years. Born in Peekskill in 1932, he is one of nine children. After graduating from Peekskill High School in 1950, he worked for NY Central Railroad for three years and in the Army for two years. Msgr. attained a BS in Economics from Iona College in 1959 then worked for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for three years. He earned a Masters of Arts Degree in Moral Theology and Divinity from St. Joseph Seminary and was ordained a priest in 1967. Immediately after ordination, Father Martin was assigned to St. Patrick’s Parish in Yorktown Heights, serving for ten years. During that, time he achieved a Master’s Degree in Counselor-in-Education from St. Johns University. Subsequently, for two years, he was the Vocation Director of the Diocese of NY, and for nine years he was the Spiritual Director of St. Joseph’s Seminary. Msgr. was the Director of the Parish Mission Team for six years. The Team conducted Missions’ throughout the NY Diocese. He was pastor of St. Mary’s Parish in Fishkill for 18 years before coming to St. James four years ago. What led Msgr. to the priesthood? It was a simply query by Father Hugh Curran during a counseling session, “Why not consider becoming a priest?” The results are in. While studying at the Seminary, Msgr. joined the choir and this background has served him well. All who know him are aware of his affinity for music: his CD’s, singing at Mass, missions at other churches and, of course, at our Dinner Dances. Like his favorite saint, Thomas Moore, Msgr. Martin is our Man for all Seasons. He is an inspiration for us at St. James and all the other parishes in which he served. A sense of humor never fails Msgr., believing that it is one of God’s great gifts, he uses it to his and God’s advantage. Even his monthly commentary, “Be All That You Can Be”, contains an uplifting message and most times is laced with humor. Both humor and song help define his personality. His event calendar, with a schedule beyond belief, defines his giving of self and sense of service. Next Sunday, May 28, 2017, 50 Years from his Ordination date, Msgr. Martin will celebrate the Noon Mass. Please join us in congratulating him at a Coffee and Cake reception in Doherty Hall after the Mass. Who knows, he may sing a song or two!

ST. SEBASTIAN’S TERRACE AND COLUMBARIUM 201 Purchased - 251 Niches Still Available

100 niches engraved and interred.

We have celebrated Mass at the Altar of our Terrace and Columbarium many times. The price of a niche is $2,500, which gives you the right to inter the cremains of two people. If you have been thinking of purchasing a niche, call Donna McCarthy at 845-225-2079 Ext. 105, on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday to schedule an appointment. For those of you not familiar with a Columbarium, it is a Latin word, which describes a collection of niches to house urns containing, cremated human remains. They are usually inscribed with the person’s name and dates of birth and death, and are constructed to serve as permanent resting places for our loved ones in a ‘churchyard’ or landscaped terrace. We pray that the Lord who has blessed this project, become a final resting place for many of our loved ones.

Mental Health - Internet Addiction

Take control of internet use:

Take breaks –perhaps a 15-minute break for every 45 minutes of internet use. Incorporate physical activity into your day to distract you from internet use. Don’t bring your smart phone or tablet with you when you leave the house. Keep track of non-essential (not related to school or work) use. Note when you go on-line: Is it due to boredom? Sadness? Loneliness? Make a list of things you enjoy doing that do not include the internet-choose one of these activities when the urge to go on the internet comes.
