“I had a career for a few years before law school, but since coming to ONU, I have felt empowered in a way that I never really did before. I know now that success is in my grasp, and I attribute that in large part to the support and concern of the faculty and the administration at ONU.”

Curriculum, First Year

FIRST SEMESTER, First YearFirst-year students are enrolled in a required comprehensive core curricu-lum designed to provide a well-rounded understanding of American law. This includes Property, Civil Procedure, Con-tracts, Torts, and Legal Research and Writing. You are pre-registered for all courses your first semester only.

JANUARY TERM, First Year (Required)The College of Law offers an innovative Janu-ary Term. First year students take a course on Legal Problem Solving & Analysis, which has two main purposes: (1) sharpening the first year students’ ability to analyze and resolve legal problems, and (2) providing students with an opportunity to interact with members of the profession. The class sizes of 14 to 16 students are deliberately smaller than the size of a typical law school class to enable the professors to provide the students with prompt and thorough feedback. The assignments, writing exercises, and prompt individual feedback help the students learn how to effectively develop and refine their analytical and legal problem solving skills.

SECOND SEMESTER, First YearIn the spring semester of your first year, you will register for Public Law and the Legal Pro-cess, Property 2, Civil Procedure 2, Contracts 2, Legal Research and Writing 2, and Criminal Law. If you matriculated in the summer, reg-ister for Evidence in lieu of the courses you took in the summer. Make certain to register for the correct section of each of your classes. You must continue each course in the section in which you started.

CONCURRENT JD/LL.M. PROGRAM (International Law)ONU Law offers a unique opportunity to receive both the JD and the LL.M. in Democratic Governance and Rule of Law degrees while studying alongside international LL.M. students and par-ticipating in two summer externships in the U.S. and abroad.

CONCURRENT JD/MPPA PROGRAM (Tax Law)Students with an interest in tax law with degrees in accounting can earn both their JD and Masters of Professional Practice in Ac-counting within three academic years. Students will begin their studies with the standard first-year curriculum. In the summer following their first year, they will take federal income taxation and an elective course. Following a second academic year of specialized courses and electives, students will be placed in a summer externship for credit that will offer field experience in tax accounting. Students will then complete a third year of study and earn both their law degree and master’s degree in account-ing in the spring.

HIGH GPA, LOW LSAT?The Summer Starter Program is a unique opportunity for students whose outstanding undergraduate performance indicates probable academicsuccess in graduate school despite disproportionate LSAT scores. This eight-week program, consisting of two first-year courses (eight credithours), provides our students with the one-on-one attention necessary to be successful in law school. From individual weekly meetings withyour academic support advisor, to weekly group teaching assistant (TA) sessions, you will learn study skills to set you apart from those studentsentering in the fall. Many of our Summer Starter students end up in the top of the class at the conclusion of their first year. This, in addition tohard work, can be credited to the skills and confidence acquired from com-pleting the Summer Starter Program. Once you have completed theprogram, you are automatically enrolled into the fall entering class. It is not necessary to re-apply.

Financial AidONU Law continues to provide a premier legal education at a marginal cost. We remain the lowest private law school tuition of Ohio’s nine law colleges. As a private institution, all students pay the same tu-ition rates despite permanent state of residence. To offset the cost of tuition, ONU Law offers competitive scholarships and grants to quali-fied candidates. For the last two years, ONU Law has awarded more than $4 million in scholarships and grants to students in all three class years.

COST OF LIVINGThe cost of living may factor into your overall decision on where to attend law school. The cost of living in Ada, Ohio is well below both the state and national averages. The average cost for law students renting a two-bedroom apartment in Ada is near $550.00/month.

Scholarships & GrantsSCHOLARSHIPSONU Law awards merit-based scholarships to highly qualified stu-dents each year. These awards recognize exceptional students who possess outstanding academic credentials, diverse backgrounds, and leadership abilities that indicate the applicant’s potential to ex-cel in all aspects of the law school experience. To be considered for an ONU Law scholarship, you must submit the application for admission and all documents required within.

FINANCIAL NEED GRANTSONU Law awards a limited number of need-based grants to studentswhose Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) indicates sig-nificant need for assistance. Applicants must submit a FAFSA at the earliest possible date after Jan. 1, 2013.

CONTINUING SCHOLARSHIPSStudents who exceed their predictors their first year and do exception-ally well have the opportunity for an increase in their award offer for their second and third years. Students entering without an award of-fer their first year who do exceptionally well also have the opportunity to receive scholarships for their second and third years.

TRANSFER SCHOLARSHIPSONU Law reserves funding to be awarded to students wanting to transfer to ONU Law after their first year of law school. Awards are based on a full review of the students’ application and academic his-tory.
