Faith—what is it? What does my faith have to do with the Church?

No one can believe alone and by himself, just as no one can live alone and by himself. We receive the faith from the Church and live it out in fellowship with the people with whom we share our faith.

Faith is the most personal thing a person has, yet it is not a private matter. Anyone who wants to believe must be able to say both “I” and “we”, because a faith you cannot share and communicate would be irrational. The individual believer gives his free assent to the “we believe” of the Church. From her he received the faith. She was the one who handed it down through the centuries and then to him, preserved it from falsifications, and caused it to shine forth again and again. Believing is therefore participation in a common conviction. The faith of others supports me, just as the fervor of my faith enkindles and strengthens others. The Church emphasizes the “I” and the “we” of faith by using two professions of faith in her liturgies: the Apostles’ Creed, the Creed that begins with “I believe” (Credo), and the Great Creed of Nicaea-Constantinople, which in its original form starts with the words “We believe” (Credimus).

CREED (from the Latin credo = I believe): The first word of the Apostles’ Creed became the name for various formulas of the Church’s profession of faith, in which the essential contents of the faith are authoritatively summarized.

“Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Mt 18:20

The Christian Profession of Faith

Why does the faith require definitions and formulas?Faith is not about empty words but about reality. In the Church, condensed formulas of faith developed over the course of time; with their help we can contemplate, express, learn, hand on, celebrate, and live out this reality.

Without fixed forms, the content of the faith would dissipate. That is why the Church attaches great importance to definite sentences, the precise wording of which was usually achieved painstakingly, so as to protect the message of Christ from misunderstandings and falsifications. Furthermore, creeds are important when the Church’s faith has to be translated into different cultures while being preserved in its essentials,

because a common faith is the foundation for the Church’s unity.

What are creeds?Creeds are brief formulas of faith that make it possible for all believers to make a common profession.

Brief formulas of this kind can be found already in the letters of St. Paul. The early Christian Apostles’ Creed has a special dignity, because it is t h o u g h t t o b e a summary of the faith of the Apostles. The N i c e n e C r e e d i s h i g h l y e s t e e m e d because it resulted f r o m t h e g r e a t c o u n c i l s o f t h e Church when she was still undivided ( N i c a e a , 3 2 5 ; Constantinople, 381) and is to this day the common basis for the Christian in the East and the West.

How did the creeds come about? The Creeds go back to Jesus, who commanded his disciples to baptize. In doing so, they were to require of the people seeking Baptism the profession of a definite faith, namely, faith in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Trinity).

The original cell from which all later Creeds grew is the profession of faith in Jesus the Lord and in his missionary mandate. He told his apostles, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Mt 28:19). All the creeds of the Church are elaborations of the faith in this Triune God. Each of them begins with a profession of faith in the Father, the Creator and preserver of the world, then refers to the Son, through whom the world and we ourselves have found redemption, and concludes with a profession of faith in the Holy Spirit, who is the presence of God in the Church and in the world.

Mass Intentions BAPTISMAL NAMESQuestion: What is the significance of receiving a name in Baptism? Answer: Through the name that we receive in Baptism God tells us: “I have called you by name, you are mine” (Is 43:1). Question: Why should

Christians choose the names of saints at Baptism? Answer: There are no better examples than the saints and no better helpers. If my

namesake is a saint, I have a friend with God.

SMILE Don't Think

A terrific explosion occurs in a gunpowder factory, and once all the mess has been cleared up, and inquiry begins. One of the

few survivors is pulled up to make a statement. "Okay Simpson," says the investigator, "you were near the scene, what

happened?" "Well, it's like this. Old Charley Higgins was in the mixing room, and I saw him take a cigarette out of his pocket and light

up." "He was smoking in the mixing room?" the investigator said in stunned horror, "How long had he been with the company?"

"About 20 years, sir" "20 years in the company, then he goes and strikes a match in the mixing room, I'd have thought it would have been the

last thing he'd have done." "It was, sir."

A Little Airsick A little guy gets on a plane and sits next to the window. A few minutes later, a big, heavy, strong mean-looking, hulking guy

plops down in the seat next to him and immediately falls asleep. The little guy starts to feel a little airsick, but he's afraid to wake the big guy up to ask if he can go to the bathroom. He knows he can't climb over him, and so the little guy is sitting

there, looking at the big guy, trying to decide what to do. Suddenly, the plane hits an air pocket and an

uncontrollable wave of nausea passes through the little guy. He can't hold it in any longer and he pukes all over the big guy's

chest. About five minutes later the big guy wakes up, looks down,

and sees the vomit all over him.

SOLEMNITY OF ST JOSEPHWednesday, March 19--St Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Patron of the Universal Church, Principal Patron of Canada: St. Joseph was an ordinary manual laborer although descended from the royal house of David. In the designs of Providence he was destined to become the spouse of the Mother of God. His high privilege is expressed in a single phrase, "Foster-father of Jesus." About him Sacred Scripture has little more to say than that he was a just man-an expression which indicates how faithfully he fulfilled his high trust of protecting and guarding God's greatest treasures upon earth, Jesus and Mary.

The darkest hours of his life may well have been those when he first learned of Mary's pregnancy; but precisely in this time of trial Joseph s h o w e d h i m s e l f great. His suffering, w h i c h l i k e w i s e formed a part of the w o r k o f t h e redemption, was not w i t h o u t g r e a t providential import: Joseph was to be, for all times, the trustworthy witness of the Messiah's virgin birth. After this, he modestly r e t i r e s i n t o t h e background of holy Scripture.

Of St. Joseph's death the Bible tells us nothing. There are indications, however, that he died before the beginning of Christ's public life. His was the most beautiful death that one could have, in the arms of Jesus and Mary. Humbly and unknown, he passed his years at Nazareth, silent and almost forgotten he remained in the background through centuries of Church history. Only in more recent times has he been accorded greater honor. Liturgical veneration of St. Joseph began in the fifteenth century, fostered by Sts. Brigid of Sweden and Bernadine of Siena. St. Teresa, too, did much to further his cult.

At present there are two major feasts in his honor. On March 19 our veneration is directed to him personally and to his part in the work of redemption, while on May 1 we honor him as the patron of workmen throughout the world and as our guide in the difficult matter of establishing equitable norms regarding obligations and rights in the social order.

St. Joseph is invoked as patron for many causes. He is the patron of the Universal Church. He is the patron of the dying because Jesus and Mary were at his death-bed. He is also the patron of fathers, of carpenters, and of social justice. Many religious orders and communities are placed under his patronage.

WORKING WONDERS IN OUR LIVELIHOODS…

Andrew attended counseling at Catholic Family Services in Simcoe at the suggestion of his

employer. He was experiencing a considerable amount of conflict at work which was affecting his job performance. Andrew realized that if he didn’t

get some help he was at risk of losing his job. Through counseling he learned more positive ways

of interacting as well as some healthy stress management skills.

Today Andrew has fewer conflicts at work and has learned how to separate his work and home life.

He appreciated the help that Catholic Family Services provided to him when he needed it most.

Last year, ShareLife-supported Family Service agencies provided family counseling to over 5,100

people in the Greater Toronto Area.

Today we are given a glimpse into another world - a heavenly, eternal world, far beyond this world but mysteriously right at the heart of it. Jesus was transfigured before the three chosen disciples — Peter, James and John. Jesus' face and clothes became dazzling white and we are told, by these reliable witnesses, that Elijah and Moses appeared among them. The two Old Testament prophets spoke with the Lord about his forthcoming 'departure, which he was to accomplish at Jerusalem' (see Luke 9:31). God the Father also spoke as a voice from heaven saying, 'This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him' (v. 5).

What do you make of this incident in Jesus' life? What is its meaning, its significance? Well, in that holy moment Jesus discloses his divine glory. He also reveals that this glory was achieved first and foremost by embracing the shame of the cross. Jesus kissed the cross in order to enter the glory of heaven. It also presents us, as St Thomas Aquinas explained, with a revelation of God as Trinity: 'The whole Trinity appeared: the Father in the voice; the Son in the man; the Spirit in the shining cloud.' This revelation of God as Trinity also occurs on the threshold of other significant moments in Jesus' life, such as his baptism and his passion.

Jesus' transfiguration can be understood as the sacrament of our future resurrection from the dead. Through the grace of baptism we somehow share in the resurrection of Jesus. The Transfiguration is a foretaste of the life to come, when our lowly bodies will be changed to be like his glorious, heavenly body. However, we too must embrace the shame of the cross in our lives for, as Paul taught, 'We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God' (Acts 14:22).

We like Peter prefer the mountain-top experiences, but St Augustine exhorts us: 'Peter did not yet understand this when he wanted to remain with Christ on the mountain. It has been reserved for you, Peter, but for after death. For now Jesus says, 'Go down to toil on earth, to serve on earth, to be scorned and crucified on earth. Life goes down to be killed; Bread goes down to suffer hunger; the Way goes down to be exhausted on his journey; the Spring goes down to suffer thirst; and you refuse to suffer."

Lord, teach me to embrace the cross of suffering.

LENT

MONDAYBe compassionate as your Father is compassionate.

Today's lesson is about mercy - God's mercy for us first, and our mercy toward others.

We renew our penance - all the ways we are trying

to change the patterns of our life that need healing.Lord, do not deal with us as our sins deserve.

Remember not against us the iniquities of the past; may your compassion quickly come to us,

for we are brought very low. Lord, do not deal with us as our sins deserve.

Help us, O God our savior, because of the glory of your name;

Deliver us and pardon our sins for your name's sake.

Lord, do not deal with us as our sins deserve. -- Psalm 79

TUESDAYProtect us from what could harm us.

Today's lesson is about being on guard against religious hypocrisy - always a potential trap, as we grow in our desire. Again, we turn to our God for help, our God whose love is

"unfailing."To the upright

I will show the saving power of God. Why do you recite my statutes,

and profess my covenant with your mouth, Though you hate discipline

and cast my words behind you? To the upright

I will show the saving power of God. -- Psalm 50

WEDNESDAYWhoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant.

Jesus is telling us about his Passion, Death and Resurrection - for us.

Too often we are fighting over which of us is the greatest. To take this journey with him, is to take a journey

that draws us to be with him in it and like him:a servant of love for others.

"The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serveand to give his life as a ransom for many."

2nd WEEK OF LENTReflections on the Daily R

THURSDAYBring us back to you.

The story of the Rich Man and Lazarus is our lesson today. We beg to be open to the workings of the Spirit,

that we might not settle for the consolations of this life alone.Jesus then said,

"I am the one who raises the dead to life! Everyone who has faith in me will live, even if they die.

And everyone who lives because of faith in me will never really die. Do you believe this?"

-- John 11

FRIDAYHelp us open our hearts to you.

W e hear of the vineyard owner whose tenants killed his servants and then his son.

Let us open our hearts and livesto the challenge of your Gospel.

"Therefore, I say to you,the Kingdom of God will be taken away from youand be given to a people that will produce its fruit."

-- Matthew 21

SATURDAY

We must celebrate and rejoice.

The Saturdays of Lent have a wonderful spirit.

Our lesson today takes us to the parable of the two sons: - one who is ungrateful and leaves, but returns, and

- one who will not accept the forgiveness the father lavishes on the other.

The Lord is loving and merciful, slow to anger, and full of love;

the Lord is kind to all, and compassionate to all his creatures.

FAST & ABSTINENCE

During Lent, Catholics abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday

and on all the Fridays of Lent.

They fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

To abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent means to not eat meat on those days. It does not

intend the omission of eggs or dairy products.

The required fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday involves eating only one full meal on those days. One or two smaller meals may be taken on those days, but may not total

one full meal. The required fast does not allow eating anything between meals.

Age Requirements"All Catholics who have completed their fourteenth year are bound by the law of abstinence; all adults are bound by the

law of fast up to the beginning of their sixtieth year.

Nevertheless, pastors and parents are to see to it that minors who are not bound by the law of fast and abstinence are

educated in an authentic sense of penance."- Code of Canon Law, #1252
