Configuring Files Services

Windows 2008 provides clients access to files and folder across the networks o Has improved Distributed File Services  & File Sharing Wizard

Windows  Server 2008 file service contains many functions for providing access and storage  of electronic data

o File server: responsible for managing data resource on a windows server 2008 Files and Folder sharing –sharing creates a Network Access Point (NAP)

for clients to access data across networks Clients use Server Massage Block (SMB) connections to access shared

resources The SMB protocol can be use on Private Networks and the internet

over TC/IP Public and Standard Sharing – Public Folder Sharing  allows users to

share files with all the user logged on locally (%system drive%\users\Public\

Standard File Sharing: makes files and folder accessible from a network location

File sharing is permitted on New Technology File System volumes and partitions

NTFS is determined by combining NTFS or user level Access Control

Share level Permissions: allows clients access to a network share (Read, Change, Full control, Deny)

Default and Administrative Shares: are adentified by the dollar $ o Drive letters share – administrative o Admins$ -shares provide you with  network access o IPC$ - use by w2008 to share resources, not files

User Level Permission: are defined at the folder or file level NTFS Permission – are divided into two File Permissions – are applied to a specific file on a W2008

server Folder Permission – are applied to a specific folder on a w2008

server Access Control List:  NFTS uses  access control list (CALS) to define

permissions to resources Authentication – user must have permissions to access the

resource o Toke – is an object attaché to a user’s  account that

validates o Security Identifies (SIDS) -  make computer , user

unique in network Deploying:  can be implemented in 4 ways

Share folder console Windows explorer

o Sharing Wizard Net share command

o Netshare, a CLI utility Share and Storage Management

Offline Files: allows share file resources to be available to clients when they are not connected to the network

Caching – storing offline (pg 277)

Distributed File System ·         is a set of client and server services that allows companies to deploy  their shared files resources

o   DFS Name Space – allows to create an entry point for share files resources using naming convention at choose

§  Domain Based –  a domain-based name space  is stored on one or more servers as part of AD DS

·         Domain Based name space implementation is two modes

Page 2: Configuring Files Services Chapter 7

o   W2008 Mode – requires a domain to be running w2008 AD DS functional mode o   W2008 mode – requires a domain to be running in windows 2008 mixed AD DS functional mod

§  Stand alone – is stored on a single server so that it is restricted to the space and availability.

DFS Replication: is responsible for synchronizing all the data within a DFS structure o allows server connected across WAN or limited bandwidth network connection to

stay current Data Collection -  allows to take data from multiple server and collect it

in a central location on one server Data Distribution – DFS allows you to distribute data across multiple

servers and collect it in a central location LOAD Balancing – allows you to deploy multiple servers that hold copies

of you data

o Distributed File System: provides a framework for creating  a centralized point for entry and accessing network data

o File Server Resource Manager: provide tools for managing and reporting  on file server resource

o Service for Network file system: provides sharing solutions for enterprises that have mixed environments

o Windows server 2003 File Service:
